hi guys, i need some help

On the secondary question that asks about "List any academic honors or awards you have received since entering college."

Did you guys just list it? Or should you explain about each one? A little confused. Thanks in advance!

hey i have a question for one of hopkins secondary essay prompts. for the one that asks what area of medicine you are interested in, are they asking for a specific specialty or sub-specialty, such as cardiology, surgery, etc.? is it ok to write something about i wanna work in the field of healthcare policy instead? i dont know if that's one of the areas of medicine they are asking. thanks!

I took it to mean either type of medicine (academic, healthcare policy, public health, private practice, etc) OR medical specialty. The former was addressed on many of my secondaries, so I presumed that JHU meant that. Personally I included a little bit on both...but stressed my goal of academic medicine more than what specialty I hoped to pursue. Since the question doesn't specify "area of medicine", I think you can go with your answer of health care policy.

what's the link to check our application status? thanks!

You just wait for an email like this:

I just got an interview (at 9:30pm friday east coast time??!!) and am really excited. Unfortunately I can't make it on the day they assigned for me due to a Michigan invite. Did anyone else reschedule and if so was it difficult? Also, do you know if they are rolling--just wondering in case I have to push the date back a few weeks. Thanks for your help!

i didn't have to postpone my interview, but they are definitely rolling. i had my interview on 9/16 and they said they'd let me know in ~6 weeks.

Thanks Tabrazinski. The date they offered is the 20th of Nov. I'm wondering if it would hurt my chances to push it back to the 5th of Dec (they only interview on thurs. and fri.). Any thoughts? Ugh, scheduling is stressful (not complaining, though 🙂)

If it makes you feel any better, I was offered to be interviewed on 10/9, but I couldn't make it and had push it back to 10/24. I doubt that the difference of a few weeks will make much of a difference... but then again, that might just be me trying to reassure myself that I made the right choice.

I was offered 10/3 but moved it to 10/10...
Because I was offered 9/19 at Baylor but moved it to 10/3...
Because I originally picked 9/5 at UMich but moved it to 9/19...

All to save on airfare.

I don't think it mattered. Don't worry 🙂

hey guys, if i received an interview, does that mean i'm fair game and that my scores were acceptable? i'm just kind of surprised because my mcat score is quite low compared to their acceptance rates (and i'm non-urm).. was just curious... thanks!

I don't think they would want to interview you if you weren't fair game! They probably saw parts of your app. that they really liked. Congrats. Just wondering, if you just got the invite within the last few days, what day did they offer? Thanks.

Hah! That's when I got mine too. Makes for a nice weekend! Man, interview invites late at night or on the weekends are making me even more fanatical about checking my email. Thanks for the info. I'm hoping to reschedule mine for the 13th or 14th...

I absolutely love how, throughout this website, people always insert this little disclaimer while explaining their perceived less than stellar MCAT scores or whatever part of their application they think is lacking to justify their surprise at receiving legitimate consideration at a top tier medical school.

News Flash: There are actually minorities who get accepted to good medical schools because surprise surprise, they were great students in college and did well too.

It speaks to some latent biased perceptions otherwise intelligent people who post here harbour. I am sick of it and wish people would stop it.

I have worked my butt off for everything I have achieved including sacrificing being with my family. I only get to see them once a year because of a decision I made to study to become a physician here in the US. I cringe at the thought that regardless of whatever school I enroll into some of my classmates would no doubt think that my presence there was some sort of "hand out" on the medical school's part and not because I earned my spot there just like every one else.

Grow up people. :eyebrow:

i think people have that perception simply from the mdapps of urm's here on sdn. they are DEFINITELY wrong to make a generalization of urm's in general, but maybe not the correlation of stats seen here on sdn? thats just my thought from only a month on sdn, its not meant to offend anyone

correlation of stats and acceptances* - sorry sdn wont let me edi for some reason

I understand what you're saying and it definitely is wrong to make generalisations. I've just noticed more and more comments like that on different threads and I think reading it on this thread was the last straw for me and I felt I had to address it. I don't think the people who make such comments are bad but they should just shy away from making sweeping comments like that.

That said, I interviewed at Hopkins a couple weeks ago and I absolutely love it. I have wanted to go to Hopkins since forever. I hope the Med School Gods/ Admissions Committee hear my prayers. :luck:

i feel u, and it kinda irks me too. but lets face it, as urm's, we get preferential treatment. rightfully so, i would argue, but undeniable nonethless.

the need to add the "and im not urm" stems from the fact that, because there are not enough urms performing at levels equivalent to the gpa/mcat averages at top-tier schools, there are many urms who recieve interviews/acceptances with gpa/mcat numbers below those means. not to say that there are not urms who perform at these levels, or even exceed them, but there is definitely a disproportionate shortage, as evidenced by the MSAT and research reports listed on jstor.

such being the case, netime somebody with less than a schools average stats recieves an interview/acceptance, if they are not urm, they feel they must say so, so other non-urms do not disregard his/her accomplishment. it kinda sucks, but as long as urms, are infact underrepresented, it will remain the case.

Do you guys know what is the time frame that Hopkins offers interviews? (when is the last month they offer interviews?

Thanks!

Ok, maybe I could ask a more specific question, what is the last month when students are most likely still able to get accepted (and not just to be on the wait list.) I searched the forum and found that Hopkins was still offering interviews in March.

The student host I stayed with said she interviewed there in February, and clearly she did alright 🙂

Sounds like someone got a handout!!!!!!

lol. Don't stress about it.

Remember, you can't please everyone even if you desperately wanted to. Just do your thing, succeed, and be excellent.

If someone thinks less of you, it doesn't matter. You think you have it tough as a minority? Imagine being Jackie Robinson in Baseball where people are sending him letters threatening his life and making him travel alone, stay in hotels alone. Read his biography if you want to learn about racial discrimination and suffering.

Having some people in your class think less of you, or people in this forum (believe me, there aren't that many any how), is really not that BIG of a deal.

You will do fine. Just keep succeeding and doing well and forget about everyone else

Anyone else heard from Hopkins?

I'd like to know what interview date they're up to with their acceptances. Only one I've seen is 9/12 interview -> 10/14 acceptance. Anything more recent?

No bias, but its a heck of a lot easier to get in. And it is a simple AAMC statistic that the average black male matriculant has a lower MCAT and GPA than the average white male matriculant. AA B.S.

I really don't get the AAMC's idea that only blacks can care for black patients, only asians can care for asian patients, ..., only i's can care for i patients. They explicitly state this as the reason for being more forgiving with any non-white applicant for their inferior app. How is it medical progress if John, a white applicant who is more intelligent with a higher mcat, gpa, better EC's and a better personal statement is turned down so Lucio, a less intelligent, less promising applicant can have his seat? They fear attrition in medical school, yet take measures to let people in showing less competancy. The fact that race is even involved in this process is BS and it does not determine how good of a physician you'll be.

I too was accepted but also interviewed quite early. My guess would be that you'd hear back by early November, so late this week or next week. If you're as cool as you seem on SDN, you are a shoe-in. As you may have noticed while you were there, contrary to popular belief, they're looking for "cool" 😎 people lol. I think that's why they have that student chat session.

I definitely know your feeling of anxiety though.:scared: There's simply no way around that. If accepted, you should totally attend Hopkins. I had the same exact impression of Hopkins that you did: "AWESOME, AWESOME people!" That's why I'm attending, and I'm honored to now be one of them. I look forward to meeting you at revisit weekend! Good luck!

i interviewed 9/18 and still haven't heard either way... when i was there they said 6-8 weeks. so that's pretty close now.

Definitely. If the Hopkins gods look favorably upon me, then I'll definitely be at second look. If vibes mean anything, then hopkins is the school for me -- I had by far the best 'vibes' there.

Congrats on hopkins, I hope to be joining you soon at the cool kids' table 👍

congratulations to you guys that are in! and good luck to everyone still waiting...

i've been lurking on sdn--hard to break the habit--but just wanted to introduce myself. i'm a first year at hopkins and it's really really fantastic. i love my class and i'm...surviving all the work. 🙄

anyway, last year it was really helpful to have a first year on the class thread to answer questions, and i wanted to fill his/her shoes (i guess it's a little early for a 2013 thread)

so please feel free to ask questions pre-interview/post-acceptance/whatever. i'd love to help!

hey guys, is there anywhere online where we can look up jhu's stats in terms of # interviewed, accepted, etc?

I don't know about somewhere to look it up, but I can tell you what they told us on interview day...

A little over 600 get interviewed, 1/3 get acceptances, 1/3 get waitlisted and 1/3 get rejected off the bat. That said, last year they took about 50 people off the waitlist, so overall the odds aren't that bad if you get an interview.

According to US News, in 2007:

4344 applied, 774 interviewed, 279 were accepted, 118 enrolled

1. For you, what exactly is so fantastic?

2. I was amazed by the people during the interview. Are they always so "awesome," or was it an act for the interviewees?

3. Are they going to go ahead with switching to preclinical P/F-only grading next year?

4. What do you do for fun (aka how many nights a week do you go out)? 🙂

😀 You should attend too! That way I will know at least one other person likes the Buckeyes. And because I think you're awesome.

Also, don't forget about the class thread in Allo.

Does anyone know if Hopkins allows status checks by phone? I've been complete since August and haven't heard a word since. 🙁

I wouldn't recommend calling the admissions office for a status check... They might win for rudest admissions office I've encountered. Sad times, because I haven't heard from them either!

For those of you who have been accepted, please add yourself to the acceptance thread. The interview date / acceptance dates are useful for people this cycle and in the future. Especially at these top schools where very few people are accepted, it's helpful to have a database of information like this 🙂 Contribute to it! You can even put "anonymous" as your username if you want to stay anonymous in the long run!

1. Hmm it's really hard to say. For one, being associated with such an awesome place is really fun. I take shortcuts through the hospital whenever I can (we're all nerds here). I love my class dynamic and (for the most part) the lectures. Even though the work is getting tough, I love coming to lecture every day to see people. It's a long day, but we understand everything thoroughly after discussion sections, journal club, labs, and some studying. (I think everything will be structured a little differently for y'all).

2. No, the 4th years weren't faking. In fact, most of my interviewers were on the Hopkins show (is that proof enough?) Everyone has a really cool place they're coming from to medical school and that makes for a very unique group! I mean, we all just want to "help people" 😛

3. I have no idea about P/F. There are so many committees etc. that I don't think anyone knows yet. That being said, medical school is about WAY more than grades. We have patient contact early and clinical tie-ins to remind us of that. And seriously, this is Hopkins. We have opportunities laid at our feet, regardless of how well you did on that quiz last week.

4. I took a little bit of time off after college, so I don't go out as much as the rest of my class. The people who live in Reed (the dorm) are always up to something fun. We just finished our first big block so there were celebrations after that and this weekend we have our big Halloween party. (I'll need to rest after this month). There are people who make studying a priority, and there are those who just want to take advantage of the free time for partying. But it all depends on you 🙂 and no one's really going to judge. That being said, Baltimore is a really fun town. There are a lot of good bars, good dancing, and good restaurants that cater to our age group.

I hope this is helpful!

I don't drink, and I am described by SDN as a teetotaler. Basically, I do not like drunken behavior because of what I constantly witnessed during my upbringing. Will I fit in at JHU?
