when i called i specifically asked if it was just early interviewees who would be hearing back in dec and she said that it would be everyone who had interviewed up to that point.

Do you know when THAT DAY is ? I am interviewing on the 17th and wondering if I will be included. It would be awesome - especially if I am accepted 👍

Please let me know. Thanks a bunch

from past years it looks like they start around the 18th

I do remember you!! We actually sat next to each other, I believe, in the waiting area and spoke for a little while. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

does anyone know for sure when NYU mails out acceptances, and up to what interview date does that include?

haha bka that is awesome!!! man.. how did you like NYU? i loved it.. its my dfirst choice if only they would accept..
i always feel so awkward asking ppl at interviews whetrher they are on SDN.. i love this place btw 🙂
mj, past years they sent out acceptances around the 18th.. maybe itll be the same? i hope so lol 😉

Hey guys,

I am interviewing in a couple of days and I am just wondering if it is uually laid back or is it a stress interview..I have heard its a mix of both, any ideas?

Hey Md3, the interview for me was very relaxed and conversational. I had the best interviewer ever! But, I can't speak for everyone. I'm sure that are cases where the interview has been tough for some. But I believe, in general, NYU aims to make the interview stress-free.

Hey guys,

For those of you who sent in updates, how did you go about doing that? Someone mentioned that they sent an e-mail. Did you include updates in the body of the text, or send in a word attachment? I just noticed I have final decision pending on my status page and was wondering if my fall quarter grades/activity update would help me get an interview invite.

Thanks!

They will only take updates as an email. When I drafted mine, I just put all the text as an email. You should add your grades to the update letter too. Also just remember, if you send this in now and then get put on the waitlist post-interview, you want to have some back-up guns to send them later as well...

mine was totally low stress. although only having one person is kind of stressful!

what if your GPA isn't the problem? should we still send in marks?

Mine wasn't stressful at all...but it was still unpleasant. The interviewer wasn't really listening, kept interrupting me to tell me about his research, and spent 75% of the interview time asking me if I knew his past colleagues at my alma mater. Good thing I was in NYC for another interview or I would have been pretty frustrated that I traveled there for a 10 minute unproductive interview. I know that other interviewers on my day had better experiences but mine just negatively tainted my overall impression of NYU. Hope you have a better experience.

Yeah, the woman interviewing me liked to play devil's advocate. At the end, she basically told me that's what she had been doing, but still. Stressful!

I was actually probed about my childhood and what it was like to be an immigrant in a foriegn country... But I was also asked about my extracurriculars etc. but I felt the interview was waaaaaaaaaaay too short. It also didn't seem like the interviewer knew my application at all, especially when I mentioned a part of my application - he seemed a bit shocked and unprepared. Also, my interviewer wasn't an MD or a PhD... but he was insightful nonetheless.

I'm not optimistic that all of us who interviewed early will be hearing back this month. The feeling I got during the admissions presentation was that they will extend a few acceptances, but most people's decision wouldn't come until March. i.e, its not necessarily just a factor of when they interviewed you - only a small number of people will get acceptances.

Of course, that could be incorrect (I certainly hope it is).

i actually called them a few days ago and asked and the lady said very nicely that they want to send the "first round of acceptances" this month.. so i was hoping that meant the people who interviewed in october? lol
also, as for interviews, while my interview went wayyy longer than scheduled, the guy really wasnt familiar with my application and that led to a few awkward moments where i said something about my app and he was like " WHY didnt you tell me that ebfore? thats something i would like to have known before!" lol

i hope we hear back. NYU is my first choice and I would definitely withdraw from a few schools 🙂

Yeah, but for those who do get an acceptance. Post stats please! So the rest of us can gauge where we stand in the rat race.

i think nyu might simply snatch up the super applicants this round of acceptances, and keep the more average applicants until march.

above cornell yes. i probably wouldnt withdraw from harvard until a decision was made, but definitely would cancel my BU interview and decline any more invites if they come. my top 3 choices inorder are:
1) NYU 2) Mt Sinai 3) COlumbia lol

as for why, a big part was just what an incredibly awesome school it is and how well i enjoyed my interview and also because of location.

i know cornell does this. I'm not sure if NYU is adopting the same strategy.

hey guys,

thought i'd give you my NYU experience from last year. I applied to NYU in late september/early October. Got an interview invite in January. I live in Japan so I called them to see if i could choose an interview date and was informed that they stopped interviewing the last day in January (it is indeed much earlier than other med schools), so I flew from japan to NYC and interviewed on January 28th, monday.

My interview was real laid back, with Dr. Simon, a 75 plus year old doc who had been there for ages. he was real nice, just asked me about my family background etc. Then we went to lunch, talked with students, and had a tour of the med school/hospital. Seemed like a great place (dorms are small singles with shared bathrooms for both men and women).

Then I was told I would hear march 3rd and went on my merry way. I didnt get the fabled email on march 3rd so i figured it was a rejection. Got a waitlist letter instead. I immediately wrote them a LOI and several update letters, and got in off the waitlist in midjune. I had a lower MCAT than their average but still got in. I wish you all luck and if you get in, go to facebook and join my NYU SOM class of 2013 group!

Thanks for the awesome feedback guys! Hopefully things will go smoothly.

I was just wondering, how long are the interviews scheduled for? Most people seem to report that they were awfully short. Are they closed file/open file and is it 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 1?

mine was open file, 1 person, approx 20 mins.

It's 1-to-1. Open file. Supposed to be 30 min, I believe. However, mine was only about 10 minutes. This may not be typical but, in my case, the interviewer was running late and the group had to leave for the tour. You should check out the interview feedback section for more info.

Mine was a little bit longer...but my interviewer obviously looked at his watch when the conversation naturally...ended I guess and managed to fill the rest of the time talking about how awesome NYU was. 🙂 I got the feeling interviews don't mean much at NYU at all...just be yourself!

Yeah, this was definitely the impression I got when I interviewed. I doubt I would qualify. Which sucks, because I would really like to not have to wait until March 3... Nonrolling admissions are the worst

i know can you imagine how it used to be before computers and non-rolling admissions?

Hi all,

I was communicating with a financial officer at NYU discussing the possibility of aid for international students (they don't help fund Canadians...so much for equal opportunity eh?) and I asked her about the acceptances; this was her reply:

"Acceptances will start going out at the end of December and will continue to go out on a rolling basis."

So does this mean that they are going to continuously send offers in the New Year... and get to everyone by March 1st?

i think it means they will be doing batches. Maybe do a batch of acceptances every month or so

i C. I just gota interview there yesterday but i applied right before the deadline. Just curious what people think of nyu. I lived a block over from the school throughout undergrad and even volunteered at bellevue, but i never made the effort to find out about the school. Any thoughts on it from people who have been there

woo hoo congrats!

My first impression was interesting. I got the impression NYU is a really good school and they are really interested in improving their school & staying advanced. I kind of got the feeling that they are in competition with the other NY schools and struggling to keep up a bit. I got asked at least 3 times while waiting in the lobby about how they could improve the interview day or what I liked best/least about the school.

Also, NYU students say they have low diversity & they are really trying to recruit more minority students to improve that (which I was surprised about since it is in NYC - one of the most diverse places in the world)

i guess that may also be due to the location. the other NYC schools are either on the brink or down right in harlem which probably leads to some diversity?

sflo, as to thoughts about NYU.. I loved it. the location is really awesome and bellevue was fantastic. the curriculum seems to not be too different from the general curriculum of most schools. correct me if im wrong, but they are pretty much a mix of lecture and pbl, i think about 50/50. the students were nice and seemed to like it there too. 🙂

it's ironic how the patients at Bellevue are mucho diverse and come from all walks of life, while the NYU med student body is not so much...

yeah the location is nice. I lived there for most of college and its great for going out and having a good time not that that should really matter lol. U will see a lot that I know.. When i volunterered at bellevue i saw the full spectrum . There is even a correctional facility affilated with NYC department of corrections within bellevue so you even may see inmates too which is pretty interesting.

As far as to what other people said. I see how they are competing with other nyc schools. It kinda sucks that they are not a diverse student body. Not that it should really matter but I would like to see all walks of life within the class. I went to a pretty diverse liberal arts college and went to class with mothers, 70 year olds, young kids like me, part animals...really everyone. So i would like to get that again in med school.

Thanks again everyone for the input.

hahah. part animals??? interesting.

Also, I've noticed the best schools in NYC like Columbia and NYU med have a homeless shelter right next to them. What gives?

lol yeah mean. As far as the homeless shelter i got no idea. lol its all about showing the community love

Yay! After being complete for exactly four months now, I finally have an interview! Hooray!

Don't worry! I'm sure that you will be getting an interview soon as well. They must be saving the best for last. 😀

Congrats. Was your status "application under review" or "final decision pending" BEFORE you got the interview?

Really?

Well that sucks. I liked it there a lot.
