My letters were submitted electronically on July 23rd but it still says online that they have not been received? Is it taking this long for anyone else? (I know that's not THAT long, but seems people were showing up complete within a day or two not too long ago)
Thanks!

I was verified as complete today. LORs sent in the 23rd as well

Public health tends to mean "public health policy." I'd say you should probably select "private practice."

i disagree. public health could also mean doing half 'policy' (such as working at a health department) and half clinical practice.

does NYU screen? im guessing no...

jeez, i read everything over when i copied and pasted... thinking it was fine

i went back and reviewed my submitted app to find all these question marks on every apostrophe

i hope what you guys said about it not being a big deal is true.... or we're screwed haha

i wouldn't be surprpised if they're just saying "it's okay"... but actually detract points from your score when deciding whtehter or not to give you a secondary hahahah

Yeah, it happened to me too - I wouldn't be too worried.

did anyone figure out how to do the essay part besides manually typing it in?

I typed it in. It didn't have line breaks when I designated, so I think I'll have to call their technical assistance line. I'm assuming everyone is having formatting issues though, so I think it either won't matter if the format is messed up or they'll be very eager to fix it for me.

I am having a pretty hard time with the first essay...does anyone know much about their curriculum or any highlights about the school besides Bellevue and NYC? I hate these "why us" essays

Do not copy and paste any word documents onto the application.

They mean it...it destroyed my formating and made me look totally illiterate. Basically, it chunked everything and added all sorts of weird characters....i called the office and they said it should be ok...🙁..so sad

+1

Also, make sure you're under 1500 characters.

I did a character count before putting my last essay in, it happened to be exactly 1500 according to word. The secondary freaked out when I pasted it in saying I'm over the count, but wouldn't let me fix it. I had to restart my browser and retype everything.

Argh!

JUST submitted it! however the site turned my nice 3 paragraph essays into one massive paragraph!! i assume there is nothing to do about this? should i be really worried?

Ugh... I should have paid more attention to this thread before I copy/pasted everything and ended up with a bunch of "i??"s. Oh well... nothing to be done now, right?

this did. but i only had one of "i??"

I'm not anywhere near applying to medical schools yet, but I was in the city today (I live in Staten Island) and I just so happened to pass through NYU's open-campus a bit. It looks so nice! Not to mention that the surrounding area looks wonderful. My brother, his gf, and I stopped for dessert at this place called the Peanut Butter Company right on Sullivan Street, which intersects some NYU buildings. I don't know if this particular part was near any of the medical school stuff, but still, it all looks very nice. GL to all you people! 🙂

i dont know whether i shoudl call the technical support number and tell them. 🙁

I just submitted. I was able to copy and paste from a .txt (notepad) file without any problems, except a) no paragraphs/hard returns and b) it totally ruined all my apostrophes.

Im in the smae boat icarus. I knew about the apostrophe problem so i manually redid all of them once i pasted into the app. are you worried about the no paragraphs thing?

whoa!!! my status is "application complete - under review"!!!!!!!
do you think that really means under review? isnt this early for adcoms to be meeting??

The campus you visited is the NYU undergrad one, as I'm sure you already know (I hope!), while the NYU Med campus is nowhere near where you visited. NYU Med is located on 1st Ave, betw E.30 and E.34 street.

And yes, NYU owns like most of the real esate in downtown manhattan.@_@

Not really - if its happening to everyone, then whatever. Let NYU sort it out.

Did manually adding the apostrophes work for you?

Okay, what in the hell is unique about NYU? I've been searching the web page and have found nothing.

Okay, what in the hell is unique about NYU? I've been searching the web page and have found nothing.

I went with Bellevue. It's really kind of an incredible hospital. Talk about Bellevue and the population of NYC. That's about all there really was- their curriculum is as regular-old-med-school-curriculum as they come.

Yeah, I'm going with Bellevue, under-served, and probably research.

Hey - maybe this is a dumb question, but if you want to "teach" as in "academic medicine" (I'm guessing that's exclusively a teaching position as a professor at a med school?), you do have to go for an MD/PhD, right? Or at least... something more than an MD? Or am I mistaken?

I mean, I'd be interested in teaching medicine (in a classroom, that is), of course, but I pretty much gave up on going for an MD/PhD because I don't have excellent undergrad research experience or a very competitive application...

Hell no. Plenty of MD teachers (and researchers as well).

Hm, so one other question: so the MD professors (or any prof's at a med school), do they *usually* teach and practice? teach and research? or... do all 3?!

From what I understand, you can practice and do research, practice and teach, or do all three. But someone else should confirm that.

Aye, you can do whatever combination of all 3 you have time for. I know plenty of physicians that have a practice and still teach a bit, and don't do any sort of research.

I know others who do research and have a practice. I can't think of anyone offhand who does all 3, but thats probably just because theres a limited amount of hours in a week.

I know several MDs who teach, do research, and practice. But the teaching and research are integrated into the practice (i.e. they teach med students/residents and they actively recruit patients who may be eligible for their studies when they see them). It's probably more common to just do 2 of the 3 but it's certainly possible to do all 3. I'd like to do all 3 with patient care the cornerstone of my career. 😀

I just checked the status check page and it now reads "Status Unavailable". Does anyone know what this means?

getting ready to rreject us? lol anyone know when NYU's adcom meets?

btw, mine says the same thing

not sure but mine says the same thing. Maybe it's there way of saying under review without actually saying under review...

but mine actually said under review before....

Anyone know what NYU's "schedule" is like? As in, when they start reviewing apps, when they give interviews etc.?

And is this the first year they have essays, so we should expect everything to be slow?

Mine currently says

But I only submitted it last night.
So yeah, they just sent me an email that said:

Dear Applicant,

This is to inform you that your secondary application has been received. Your letters of recommendation have not arrived. Please have them sent as soon as possible. Once they are received, your application will be reviewed by the Committee.

Thank you,
Admissions Office
NYU School of Medicine
Now, I had my sent letters to them over a week ago. Them, and 14 other schools, the majority of whom have received the letters, so I know they went out. Normally, I'd want to call and just double check that there were letters and they just might not have been processed yet, but their FAQ tells us not to call. I'd STILL like to, but the phone number of their admissions office is nowhere to be found on the website. Sneaky, sneaky NYU!

give it time. for some schools i was processed within a day of submitted LORs, others took almost 2 weeks.

anyone think they are reviewing us already? lol

I'm "Status Unavailable," also. Anyone else wanna try it out and see if it's just their computer system, or maybe they're making changes to our files?

i'm back to complete and under review now (was status unavailable earlier).

Same here. Either they had computer problems or they were actually reading our apps.

this is a silly question, but on the secondary where it asks us to fill out our undergrad courses - do we enter credit hours or semester hours? cause in the instructions it says we need to satisfy semester hours but the column is titled # of credits..?
