9:41 PM on the east coast

Dean Garcia calls.

I'm still shaking. Can't believe it.

🙂

That is fantastic. I am glad you took the advice, including mine, to go to that interview.

Best thing I have read on SDN in a while!

I interviewed March 11th (I think). Has anyone still not heard from that around that time?

Those who have been accepted: how long did it take for the acceptance package to get to you after the phone call? It's been a week for me and still nothing. 😕

it took a while! (more than a week) i started to believe the phone call was some sort of prank. but dont worry itll get there.

It took more than a week for me. I am in the NE.

Spoke too soon! Got the package in the mail when I got home from work. Took exactly a week to get to the east coast

Is Stanford waitlist tiered as high/med/low ? How would one know ? Do they mention that in the waitlist letter ? Also, do you know how many roughly get accepted from the waitlist ?

Thanks a bunch

The waitlist letter didn't imply any kind of ranking. Not sure how many people get off of it, but it didn't sound very promising. More like "Nice try...but why don't you start looking somewhere else."

Did anyone hear from Stanford this week? And does everyone get called or do some people only get letter?

Thanks so much!

I got that letter too. 🙁

And yeah, it basically implied that no one would come off that list. We'll see.

has anyone who interviewed in april heard back from stanford? thanks!

Admits, before you commit the next 4,5,... number of years of your life to Stanford Med, you need to be aware of an important change.

On April 20th, Dean Pizzo announced a town hall meeting that the school will start putting grades in clinical years starting next year affecting even currently enrolled students. A lot of us chose Stanford because of the unique no grade system and are very frustrated that such a drastic change was done without any student input and completely insensitive to students who have already enrolled.

It should be noted that Stanford has not had grades for over 50 years, and until today, it's still one of the best medical schools in the nation with a awesome match result. Over the years, Stanford has defined itself through the community that it builds because people here collaborate rather than compete. This movement will surely erode that culture.

The worst part of this is that the decision was unilateral and students were only "notified." After the announcement, it was made clear that "students inputs are welcome although the decision will not be changed."

So if you're considering to come to Stanford, just be aware of the situation, because next year, they could very well decide that there will be grades starting pre-clinical years. We were told that students' inputs are taken seriously and we experienced the total opposite.

I can tell you personally that the no - grade system in no way made us worse students. We all still work hard. The difference is people are much more collaborative and much more willing to help each other. For those of you who think you can be all stars in med school, think twice because people come here from all walks of life. Some had a PhD in Biology... Good luck competing with them if you're straight out of college.

For those coming to admit weekend, I encourage you to ask many questions to the administration and the students. Just bear in mind that whatever the administration tells you can change at anytime, and we have experienced that. This was in no way a transparent process when Stanford always prided itself in transparency. Right now, you still have choices, so consider all factors when making your choice. Good luck!

My friend at stanford med also told me the same thing a few days ago and he was not happy, i asked him the specific breakdowns like if it was going to be H/P/F A/B/C/D etc, but he didn't know he just said they were going to issue grades starting 3rd year.

When I went for my interview they told me they gave grades starting 3rd year. I think the entering class was made aware of this change. It is a bummer and I truly hope 1st and 2nd year stays strictly p/f.

What was the rationale behind the decision to add grades to the clinical years?

Their website still says pass/fail and they didn't mention anything to me when I interviewed. It's not going to change my decision, but I'm not thrilled about it. I guess it's something to ask about at second look.

is it true that there are no classes on Wednesdays?

Correct me if I'm wrong...

The core classes aren't on Wed, but some classes that you need for the scholarly concentration are on Wed, and a lot of electives are on wednesdays.

I'm not sure if its possible to literally go to zero class on wednesdays.

The Dean's Newsletter helps to clarify quite a lot. I'm posting it here for discussion. I have been looking very much forward to starting medical school at Stanford in August, and I'm not sure what impact grades during the clinical years will have on my experience.

So does anyone know if there has been or there will be a waitlist movement this year at stanford? I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks!!

Wow. That was fast. Grats fibroblastman and thank you b2fly for the quick find.

I also was accepted this weeked, and am very happy! Now, unfortunately, I have to pick between UCSF and Stanford. I am not sure how to make this decision since I really like both schools.

congrats to those accepted off the wait-list1 can't say i'm not envious of you guys 😛. may i ask if any of you had sent letters of interest/intent?

I only sent thank-you letters to my interviewers.

I didn't send a letter either. I had sent cursory thank you notes to my interviewers after my interview though.

Are students who get accepted off the waitlist still able to get on-campus housing (Lyman, Rainns, EV, etc) if they apply to be on the housing waitlist?

I was wondering about Stanford tuition if one doesn't receive any aid.

I know they have some sort of tuition reductions later on and good money for working summers. I'm trying to compare possible debt and for other schools I'm just looking at tuition x 4 but Stanford seems more complicated.

Thanks

Does anyone know if you send an update, does the person respond that he/she received the update? Also, is Stanford one of those places where you'll get rejected out of the waitlist? Ahh I love this school so much! (as do many others...)

Yo does anyone know anything about Jonathan Perez, the current assistant director of admissions at Stanford?? I'm asking cuz he's coming to one of the Fl. schools in the near future to become their director of admissions. so I'm curious what you guys know about this guy. Like how he is and whether he is really helpful or whether your experiences dealing with him through your admissions saga was positive or negative. Just trying to figure out who this guy is and how he is. that's all.

got in today off the waitlist! didn't understand anything after "you're accepted" but still the best phone call ever.

Just got in off the waitlist today! I have had the biggest grin on my face all day! So thrilled!

got off the waitlist today... 😱 someone pinch me and tell me it's real!!!!!

if there will be any more openings for waitlisted students at this point.

Please let me know if you have heard anything. Thanks
