to video posters:

you ruined it for me😱

I was so excited going there, not so much anymore:laugh:

Dude, that's downtown Cleveland. You'll only go there when you need to go to Metro for clinical experiences or when you want to check out the club scene.

You all should watch the 30 Rock episode about Cleveland. I thought it was hilarious

Also, the thing about the sun is only true in the winter. It's been sunny and amazingly clear out here all through June and July. Can't vouch for May, as I wasn't here then.

Right now, it's beautiful.

And hey, we're not Detroit:

They can't even make fake tourism videos as well as Cleveland.🙁

(And they had to subcontract to Pittsburgh to do it...)

Yeah, we have our first exams this week, then our next exam week isn't until the last week of October. And I'm 99% sure the second years don't have exams until November.

Correct, second year exams are first week of November.

My first interview invite! I'm ecstatic! Complete 8/3 Invite 8/11. I signed up for October 16th, I hope to see some SDN kids there.

Keep your faith guys, if a butcher can get an interview you can too!

I was complete 8/3 also and haven't heard anything. Anyone know what Case's policy is about letting people know if they have been put on hold or not? I know we have come to the consensus that schools don't necessarily review in order of completion but I am getting a little paranoid because several of my schools have started sending out invites/rejections and I have gotten neither while people complete much after me have. I don't know if being international has an effect on the review process.

So, I'll be hanging out in the SDN chat in the #case channel, should you guys get bored/curious for maybe the next hour or so.👍
Nice, so as soon as I leave, you open a chat room.

To address something Neuronix brought up last night, I have no idea about CCLCM, but there is no longitudinal experience with chronic condition patients in the university program.

Instead, we've seen (so far) on two instances groups of patients suffering from different chronic conditions. They do bring in a different group of patients for us to talk to in panel form once a week in block one, though.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean by a longitudinal experience with chronic condition patients, but CCLCM students have a longitudinal clinic during the first two years. You work in the same preceptor's office both years. First year, you have clinic one afternoon every other week, and second year you have clinic one afternoon every week. If you're talking about continuity with patients, you do get that under this system. Particularly the patients with diabetes tend to come in every few months, so there were some I saw several times. One of these repeat diabetes patients goes to the same gym that I do. Every time I run into him there, he always yells, "hey, doc!" loudly, and everyone else turns and stares. Then he announces to the whole room, "this is my doc!" It's really funny and embarrassing at the same time. 😛

Other conditions we saw a lot of are things that are common in the population at large: hypertension, obesity, etc. But there were some more unusual patients too. My favorite was a multiple sclerosis patient I saw a few times. Most of the MS patients go over to the MS clinic in S building, but for some reason, this one didn't.

Besides the longitudinal clinic, we also had extra sessions second year to see patients in specialty clinics who had pathology related to the block we were on. For example, we went to clinics where they saw patients with things like arrhythmias and pulmonary hypertension during our card/pulm block.

you're getting paranoid??, i've been done since 20/7 and still no news..oh , i'm international also (canadian)

For those of you picking hosts, I don't know who to live with! there are so many good choices, every student seems very interesting hehe

if the current students could recommend interesting people? that would be fabulous. otherwise im gonna try to see who peaks my interest/looks like will be fun to spend a night with

any other suggestions on how to pick?

I think "interestingness" is pretty subjective - what one of us finds interesting might not be what you'd find interesting. I'm pretty sure you'll have a good experience with whoever you pick. 👍 We're all interesting in one way or another, otherwise we wouldn't be here! Sounds like you're going about it the right way to me.

If you applied to CCLCM, then it will take longer, because they just started reviewing. Just relax and wait. :luck:

So, for those of you who didn't get a chance to hang out with us on IRC (and those of you who did), we'll be idling in there for a few days (if not weeks 😏) if you have any questions or just want to hang out.👍

got a letter from case the other day saying something to the effect of "are you maybe not sure you want to do medicine" and then talking about a masters program in anesthesia.

hint? haha

Haaaa, I used to get those from schools all the time. It generally doesn't mean a thing, so try not to dwell on it.

As a matter of fact, those flyers are up all over the med school, too.

ditto, lmao glad it wasn't just me!

I was especially perplexed because they have given me an interview... I had a dream I showed up to my Case interview and they opened it with "actually, we thought you'd be a great fit for our masters in anesthesiology program" ::asystole ensues::

The End. lol

Just got interviews at Case Western and Cleveland Clinic! Soothes the BU rejection sting

when were you complete? do these guys do things in order? anyone know if applying to both programs slows things down?

just got my interview invite from both college and university track.

interview from college and university track! how does the student host thing work?

Completion and interview timing are not that related for UP. Previously, the holdup was on CCLCM's end, but they seem to be moving forward again.

Which hotels are you guys staying at?

I searched Expedia.ca and the places they offer are like 30 minutes away from the school. and I don't want to be 30 mintues away when the interview starts at 7:45 am..

Search earlier in the thread - there's already been a fair bit of discussion about the different hotel options. 👍

I just got the Masters of Science/Anesthesiology letter in the mail suggesting I possibly consider something other than medicine, and I'm interviewing at Case soon. Oh, the irony.

Don't worry about it too much..it seems like this year, it's taking a looot longer for internationals to hear back (last year it was a couple days?)

Gliddon house is fully reserved and intercontinental suite is waayyy to expensive.. oh man.. i've spent like 6 hours trying to get the cheaptest rate but the time is wasted so much it's not worth it..

How much was Intercontinental? Did you call the Cleveland number and ask for the Case/CCLCM rate?

Oh I should! Gliddon house is very expensive like $150 more than other hotels.. (I'm staying 2 days there)

Gliddon is like $650 for 2 nights, Intercontinental is like $700, Holiday inn and such are ~ $500 but 20 ~ 30minutes away.. so I guess $500 + taxi fees and waking up early = worth the extra $150 for the Gliddon

Uh, yeah, those aren't the discounted rates. Those are crazy rates. You should be able to get them for much less.

Ouch, looks like they are sending out rejections too. Just checked my status page, very sad day. 🙁 Already have another rejection and no interviews, am I screwed? And, should I add more schools? Check out my school list in my MDApps (and feel free to PM me if you want more info about my profile). Thanks guys!

I called the Intercontinental Suite.. which is like basically um.. very close to the campus I suppose.

Normal rate $200/night; Student rate $135/night

So um.. yeah.. hope it helps

ok, so this is a shot in the dark, but I want to see if anyone out there wants to turn this bad boy into a road trip. Here is my intinerary:

Friday September 25th, 1:00pm leave Chicago
Arrive in Akron, Ohio 8:00pm

Saturday, September 26th, 7am: Run the Roadrunner Akron Marathon
1pm: head to Cleveland, Ohio
2pm: Arrive in Cleveland, Ohio

Sunday, September 27th: explore cleveland

Monday, September 28th: interview until 4pm
4pm: head back to chicago.

If anyone is interviewing that weekend, and is willing to leave friday, and is from Chicago, or any of the following cities that I'll be passing: Gary, South Bend, Toledo, Akron, I will be happy to swing by and pick you up. Pitch in a (very) minimal amount for gas, and you have a cheap ride and a fun interviewing buddy for the weekend.

Let me know

Shuhan

I had more rejections than interviews too for a while. After the first rejection (granted at a tough school), I freaked out and added 7 more schools. But eventually the interviews started coming. To be honest, I did feel better after adding more schools, and money is not an issue for me right now, but at the same time, I feel that most schools have not begun to give out interviews yet. It seems like everyone has an interview because you're here at SDN, and everyone is counting up their interviews, etc., but remember that we're still in mid-August and many schools will interview people into January and February! Anyways, do what makes you sleep best at night.

very sound advice! 👍

Do whatever will make you happy and have no regrets. Just judging by your stats I would guess you would get some interviews soon! :xf:

Rejected 🙁 34R/3.8+ish

So far only 1 interview, four rejections...it's turning out to be a bad cycle so far.

Just looked at your MDapps, don't give up hope just yet. You still have about 75% of your schools to hear back from. Hang in there!

Nebraska was expected because you are not from there and Mayo is just super competitive, they have the lowest acceptance rate in the country so don't count these schools as indicative of your success this cycle.

Congrats on the Mayo invite! As someone who was extremely bummed/freaked out to be put on hold by UChicago, your application gives me great hope.

Congrats on the invite guys!

Does anyone know if sending your apps in after their "recommended" 2 weeks time = most likely a rejection?

Thanks, and I'm glad to help. Yeah I was freaked out by UChicago too, I didn't even get put on hold. That rejection is the one that prompted me to add more schools because it just happened so fast! It was like the second week of July or something. They are one of those schools that is looking for something rather specific (I guess all schools pretty much are though). It's an incredibly selective school, don't let it get you down, bigman (though you might still get in).

Sorry, Magus. It's hard to give you any specific advice without any info about you, but it looks like you have enough schools to me. Good luck, hope you get some good news soon.

Sounds like a great trip! There are a bunch of CCLCM second years running in the Akron marathon too. 👍

Congrats on the invite guys!

No. If you're seriously considering Case, they don't want you to sit on the secondary for three months, but it's fine if you turn it in after 15 or 20 days instead of 14. There's no mechanism for apps to automatically expire to the reject pile on midnight of the 15th day. 😉

One more update for everyone who applied to CCLCM: Susan, who was the admissions secretary, worked her last day today. As far as I know, they haven't hired anyone to replace her yet. I'm not sure how that will affect invites from CCLCM, but if things get slow for a while, don't panic!

CCLCmer, does case look at apps in the order they were complete? how does applying to the college track affect the timing of an interview? i was complete on 8/5 and was expecting an interview, but have seen many ppl get them who submitted after me. just getting a little worried i guess 🙂
