I think you're getting the idea.👍

Myuu, could you tell me more about you and your classmates feelings on possibly losing the Cleveland Clinic as a teaching hospital? I've heard so much the quality of service there, does the University Hospital live up to the same standards? Does this speak I'll of Case seeing that a local prestigious hospital wants to branch out to another Medical school?

I'm not one of Myuu's classmates, but since she and her classmates have barely been in medical school long enough to even find the hospital, I figured I'd chime in anyway. 😛

First, it's not definite that CCLCM will break off from Case. Even if we do some day, it doesn't necessarily mean that Case students wouldn't be able to rotate at CCF any more. There are students from multiple med schools who rotate at CCF. The worst case scenario would be that the Case students would have to rotate at CCF as away students instead of as home students. But they could still rotate at CCF.

Second, having rotated at both, I can tell you that UH and CCF are very different environments. It's not really the "standards" that are different per se. The hospitals themselves--their cultures and their strengths--are different. In my gross oversimplification, UH is a more typical academic hospital that is affiliated with a university, while CCF is essentially a gigantic group practice that happens to have its own hospital. If you are interested in surgery or any of the specialties that support surgery (anesthesiology, pathology, etc.), those are some of the best rotations at CCF. On the other hand, I think many of the medicine specialty rotations are stronger at UH. Don't forget that besides UH and CCF, all Case students in both programs can also rotate at Metro (the county receiving hospital) and the VA. Again, those are very different rotation experiences from UH and CCF.

Third, I don't think Dr. Cosgrove's discussions with other med schools reflect badly on Case as an institution. Case has always been a highly regarded medical school. However, there is a long history of bad blood between CCF and UH that goes back decades. That history is not something that automatically gets erased just because CCLCM exists. Given the political backdrop, it's pretty awesome that Case and CCF were able to come together to found CCLCM in the first place.

Thanks for the clarification on the situation, I was quite unaware of the bad blood between UH and CCF. I hope CCF stays affiliated with Case, but I'll have to look into what conditions come with "home" vs "away" rotations before I get too attached.

If you're interested enough in the CCF/UH rivalry to read an entire book about it, I can recommend this one. I read it as a first year, and it was pretty interesting, especially since I had met some of the people who were interviewed by the author! The last chapter discusses the founding of CCLCM.

On hold here. So sad.

Do many people come out of the hold status with an interview? Or are they mostly rejections?

Some people do get interviews from the hold status. And don't worry, I'll talk some sense into them next week when I get there. 😀

Hey, now. I can find the hospital.

I had no idea what the LRI was, though, and even less of an idea of where it is.:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I'll figure it out eventually, though.👍

Hi everyone-

I was just wondering if having family that are alumni of CWRU medical school has any real impact on admissions. I know on the secondary it asked for this information, just not sure if it really matters.

The reason I ask is that my aunt received her MD from CWRU, which is what prompted me to apply. I understand that my chances are remote with a 3.76 and a 29M (12B 8V 9P), but she strongly encouraged me to apply...

If it matters, my ECs include ER/onco volunteering, multiple sclerosis research, special olympics volunteer and some other leadership/community service

I'll be checking out CWRU and CCLCM later this week (and I suppose they'll be checking me out too) 😎 Here's to hoping that forecasted rain doesn't show!

I will give you a personal tour whenever you want one. Though, I don't know my way around some parts of LRI myself....

I think the main reason they ask about alumni affiliations is to find out if there is any conflict of interest. Like, if your aunt was a department chairperson at Case, they'd want to know about it.

It's raining tonight (spitting, really), but tomorrow and Wednesday are supposed to be sunny. 👍

Good luck with your interviews. :luck:

Hi all, do u know if the adcoms met yesterday? They will probably send out decisions in the next couple of days!

Does anyone know if the CCLCM interviewers are planning to grill us with Healthcare Reform questions or anything health policy related?

I'm only really prepared to talk about my research and interest etc

2 of my 3 interviewers asked me about healthcare.

figured i'd try to overcome my defer fears and visit this thread....ahh...this thread used to be such a happy place for me 🙁

Both of my faculty interviewers asked me about health policy. I was also asked about grant writing (which I had no experience with, but had to get through anyways), ethical issues surrounding both research and medicine, and the typical "Why medicine?" Qs. I feel like I had a couple exceptionally tough interviewers though as this did not seem to be the consensus among my fellow interviewees that day. CCLCMer will also probably chime in and say that as a general rule they're pretty laid back. Health policy is something you should know for ALL of your interviews though (I mean, it is THE issue facing the field today).

deferred at both OSU and Case? That's tough man. Why is Ohio so cruel to you?

Quick questions for any case students.

*So on the cirriculum page they give you they have it going until March of 2nd year... then typically do people study for boards? If so, how long and is that studying done at Case or could you technically fly back home and study there?

*Can someone give me a really brief explanation of how Case gets all med school knowledge with such few contact hours/week? Are you given a list of topics to look over, class notes or are the lectures just really brief and it's up to the student to read up? Or do you cover a lot of new material in the IQ groups?

*I hear there is more Cali residents over there then from any other state 😛, are people able to get some away rotations in California easily?

You can take the boards anytime from March-December. You will always have up to 8 weeks to prepare for it. Many take it in the first couple months and many go home to study and take it, myself included.

Yes. You go through the standard application for away AIs.

has anyone heard anything after post-intervew hold? When does the admissions committee re-review these applicants?

For those students who were accepted off post interview in past years, is there anything you did that helped you to get accepted?

They seemed to start accepting people from post-interview hold list in January last year. Most people I know who came off the list had at least written a letter expressing their interest in Case and why they thought they'd be a good fit for the program.

Aww, thanks! 😀
By my tally, I currently owe you one LRI tour and one CD.

I believe some people should be hearing from the UP pretty soon....

I would have said no, but apparently at least some people did get asked in depth about healthcare policy. I'm sure it's interviewer-dependent.

Wow, you got asked about grant-writing and you haven't ever written a grant? I don't even know what to say to you, man. I've never heard of anyone else getting asked questions about grant-writing. It does seem like you had some exceptionally tough interviews that are not the norm for most applicants. 😳

Aww. 🙁

I thought some of you might be interested in this news release put out by CCF and Metro (county hospital) today.

Unprecedented Partnership to Save Lives in Regional Trauma Network
Collaboration designed to improve outcomes for adults with critical injuries

(Cleveland) - Cleveland Clinic and MetroHealth have agreed to create a regional trauma
network, the Northern Ohio Regional Trauma Network (NORTN). This agreement is the first
step in bringing together the community’s level I and II adult trauma centers in an
unprecedented collaboration to save lives, reduce disability and improve outcomes for trauma
patients.

The hospitals in the trauma network agree to share quality data and abide by clinical best
practices shown to improve patient outcomes. Under medical direction from MetroHealth’s
level I trauma center, and coordinated transport through Metro Life Flight, adult trauma
patients will receive care at the hospital most appropriate for the severity of their injury. The
goal is to get the patient quickly to the medical capabilities that ensure the greatest chance of
survival and recovery.

“Trauma is a public health issue, putting thousands of lives at risk each year,” says Mark
Moran, MetroHealth Chief Executive Officer and President. “It is in the public’s best interest
to ensure that the community’s resources dedicated to trauma are organized and coordinated
effectively to deliver the best possible outcomes for patients. Though we have initiated this
network with Cleveland Clinic, we invite all hospitals to join us in this effort to improve
public health.”

“This collaboration will allow us to optimize the quality of care and outcomes for trauma
patients across the region. Together, Cleveland Clinic and MetroHealth are sharing best
practices and designing a premier model for trauma care to benefit those in our communities,”
said Delos Cosgrove, MD, Chief Executive Officer and President of Cleveland Clinic.

MetroHealth’s level I trauma center treats approximately 4,500 adult trauma patients each
year, making it one of the largest in the nation. Together with the Cleveland Clinic health
system’s four level II trauma centers, NORTN expects to coordinate the care of about 6,500
adult trauma patients.

“MetroHealth’s level I trauma center stands ready 24/7/365 to handle the most seriously
injured patients, and this agreement ensures that best practices developed in the most critical
situations are available across the network,” explains Brendan Patterson, MD, inaugural chair
of the NORTN Advisory Board and Executive Director of Surgery at MetroHealth. “A patient
who sustains injuries that threaten life and/or compromise function will benefit from the
immediate attention of a team of trauma specialists and critical care nurses who meet the
highest standards of trauma care.”

NORTN’s first Medical Director will be Jeffrey Claridge, MD, MetroHealth trauma surgeon
and Director of Trauma Research. The MetroHealth and Cleveland Clinic health systems will
each contribute $300,000 to the initial budget of NORTN. Additionally, Cleveland Clinic will
donate $2.4 million over two years in a contribution to a local charitable foundation,
earmarked for use by MetroHealth to address the community’s challenge of uncompensated
care and to support training and research in trauma care.

The MetroHealth System
The MetroHealth System is one of the nation’s largest public health providers, ranking in the top 1% of all
hospitals nationwide for quality in patient care. As the region’s only Level I adult and pediatric trauma and burn
center, MetroHealth is a nationally recognized leader in critical care and rehabilitation, community health, highrisk
perinatal care, and senior health. MetroHealth offers the region’s largest urban-based network of
community health centers focused on reducing health disparities through comprehensive care to vulnerable
populations. MetroHealth achieved Magnet designation in 2005. Founded in 1837, MetroHealth has been a
major affiliate of Case Western Reserve University since 1914 and all MetroHealth physicians are CWRU
faculty. MetroHealth is one of Cleveland's largest employers with more than 6,200 employees. For more
information on The MetroHealth System, visit www.metrohealth.org.

Cleveland Clinic
Cleveland Clinic, located in Cleveland, Ohio, is a not-for-profit multispecialty academic medical center that
integrates clinical and hospital care with research and education. Cleveland Clinic was founded in 1921 by four
renowned physicians with a vision of providing outstanding patient care based upon the principles of
cooperation, compassion and innovation. U.S. News & World Report consistently names Cleveland Clinic as
one of the nation’s best hospitals in its annual “America’s Best Hospitals” survey. Approximately 1,800 full-time
salaried physicians and researchers at Cleveland Clinic and Cleveland Clinic Florida represent more than 100
medical specialties and subspecialties. In 2008, there were 3.3 million visits to Cleveland Clinic and 50,465
hospital admissions. Patients came for treatment from every state and from more than 80 countries. Cleveland
Clinic’s Web address is clevelandclinic.org.

yeah it's an apply on invite only sort of deal

I personally have not been invited to apply for merit aid...which is a shame, since this place costs so daymn much

Interviewed on 11/5 and got the news today that I've been put on-hold. Can anyone give me some insight into what to expect from here? Do students often get accepted from the "on-hold" group, and if so, when are we usually notified? Also, what can I do to increase my chances of getting accepted? (letter, status updates, etc). I really enjoyed Case during my interview day and would definitely consider matriculating if accepted. I also interviewed for the CCLCM program and keeping my fingers crossed for that.

Sorry to hear it. Was it pre- or post-interview? Good luck with your other apps, it looks like you have a lot of great interviews.

This is what happened to me both last year and this year. I obviously didn't get off hold last year. A significant number of people, however, do. Later in the cycle, ie January or so (check last year's thread) they assess whether they are under accepting. If so, they take people from on hold to accepted. Then they make the wait list from the on hold group, and obviously people get accepted that way.

The recurring theme with case seems to be show interest. They welcome phone calls unlike some other admissions offices.

You'd probably get a lot farther by writing a letter, though.

We start reviewing post-interview holds in January.👍

When do pre-interview holds get reviewed. Lol I feel so pathetic asking this

Applied a little later than most after getting flyer about CCLCM in the mail.

Applied 10-5, completed secondary 10-22.

Haven't heard anything. Are they still giving out interviews? Stats 3.7/37O

You gotta long wait. I was complete late September and they said they still have to review mine.

It was pre-interview. one of my roommates in college lives really close to Case Western and I was hoping to visit his home, but it wasn't meant to be. haha

When does CCLCM send out its first acceptance again? I vaguely remember it being Dec. 15th. But not quite sure of that.

And is it by e-mail or by phone?

Thanks! :scared:
