I thought being a doctor was your childhood dream! 😀
Actually, being an engineer was my childhood dream.:laugh::laugh:
Peewee league hockey player was a close second though.😎

Just so you know, if I slip and fall and break my neck at some point this winter, I want to be buried with my sweatshirt. At a discount and preferably for free, of course.

I will make sure your wishes are honored (and drive you to the ER)!

Living my childhood dreams?😏

Not the one you're expecting, Mr. Doom-and-gloom!

Outstanding.

Soooo! Spent two hours on the hardwood this evening. Have gotten top-speed counter-clockwise crossovers down. Nailed 2/029384293482034 180ºs. Jumped once. Backwards crossovers do not compute.

Falls: 0.😎
Wipeouts: 0.😎
Children run over: 0.😎
Bruises: 1. Eh, I was trying to slalom my way to the bench to readjust my ankle straps and bumped the edge of it with my shin at 0.000002mph.

This might be a stretch, but ice skating is the closest mention to snowboarding I've seen in this thread. Does anyone know how the snowboarding / skiing is around Case? I know there are a few resorts, but are they trash? Any worth the money for a season pass?

I'm not a snowboarder/skiier, but I've been told that there's no real skiing available in Ohio. Your closest bets are PA, NY, and WV.

Actually, I take that back. There is Brandywine about 40 minutes away, but I hear you should avoid renting their supposedly rusted-out equipment. So, if you've got your own gear, you're golden. If not, go out of state.

Edit: I've also been told that there's snowshoeing and cross-country skiing somewhere east of the city, around Chagrin Valley.

So i got an interview at CCLSM, but got rejected from the normal program ... this is kind weird

Ha, you'd still fit in the peewee league even now. :meanie:

Thank you. I take back previous profundity telling you that you suck.

CCLCOM invite!!! complete around 9/12
Congrats. 😀

Totally normal.

That's actually totally normal.
Yeah, like I was saying....

CCLCM dude. get it RIGHT! 😛
Hey, he's way more creative than the usual CCLM people write. 😛

Personally, I think CCLSM has a kind of nice look to it, but I definitely don't like the extra O, considering we have so many letters in our acronym already. 😱

Hey, hey. Ho, ho. That extra O has got to go!

Me too, is your app heavily research biased because mine is
That might help explain it, but plenty of people with strong research backgrounds (10+ years) get invited to and accepted by the UP too, so it's probably not just that.

I don't know anything from personal experience (never been skiing or snowboarding in my life), but I have heard from those in the know that the local skiing leaves something to be desired. Which probably means it's perfect for someone like me.

I am wanting to send some post-interview supplemental information and LOI to CCLCM, and do you have any suggestions as to whom I could address the letter to? Dean Franco? My interviewers? Could I just email the package to Karen? I think I heard or read somewhere that LOI does not have much of a big impact on your admissions decisions, but I still want to try. Thanks!!! 🙂

I'm the one who said the LOI probably wouldn't do much at this point. The time when it could make a difference is if you get waitlisted in the spring. But if you have info to update for the adcomm, it makes sense to submit that.

I don't think it matters all that much whose name you put on the letter. But out of the options you gave (i.e., your interviewers versus Dean Franco), I would pick Dean Franco, unless you're planning to send copies of the letter directly to your interviewers.

Denise is actually the admissions secretary, not Karen, although Karen helps with admissions. So you definitely shouldn't send it to Karen. I would send it directly to Dean Franco. Why involve another person, which could only increase the chances that your letter will get misdirected?

Thanks soo much for the info. I have some updates in regards to non-academic activities. I doubt it will make any major differences but hopefully it at least somethingto my application. 😳

Yeah, definitely do send in the update. Dean Franco will put it in your file. FWIW, your MDapps looks pretty sweet. Congrats on all your acceptances, and good luck.

Thaaanks, I just got bored over the winter break. I could pass a good chunk of time making it haha. I've been hearing really good things about this thread from my friends, and i agree that it's rare to find a med student who's this active on sdn - so awesome job CCLCMer (and of course you too, Myuu)! 👍

Huh, there's an ice rink where I'm staying over break that gives hockey lessons! But not while I'm here.

I gave you credit! Give me some credit for giving you credit!

So, I'm counting down the days to my CCLCM interview, and still haven't heard back from the student hosts I e-mailed. Any Clevelander willing to offer a couch? Otherwise, consensus seems to be that the Intercontinental Suites are the best - any opinions on this from people who stayed here or elsewhere?

Also, I have to say, WOW!!! I am unbelievably excited 😀. Especially after reading more detail on it, CCLCM is absolutely the perfect school! Seriously, I really don't know how it can be any better!

Can't help with the hosting, but I would say that the Intercontinental on Carnegie is actually the best (not the Suites on Euclid), because it's physically connected to CCLCM, making for an easy morning walk over. When do you interview?

Yeah, but it's more expensive than the Suites, and the Suites has a shuttle that can drop you off right in front of the med school. So it's not necessarily any easier.

Hey Happy Holidays everyone! Haven't been on this forum for a while but CCLMer probably remembers me from October. It's good to be back in Cleveland and experiencing the -34 degree weather again. Hopefully you guys have better plans than spending the winter in Cleveland 🙂.

BTW congrats to everyone who got accepted to the CCLCM and congrats to CCLMer for passing the USMLE with flying colors. I hope you guys have a relaxing holiday.

Oh, come on, Looking Glass, it's not that bad. It's a balmy 26 degrees right now according to the Weather Channel. 😀

Yup, I do remember you. Hope your interviews are going well, and happy holidays to you, too.

Interviewing early January. If I don't find a host, I don't mind paying some extra money for Carnegie if it makes things much more convenient than Suites. Otherwise, cheaper is better (and of course student hosting is best because I really want to meet you guys!).

Also, one more question that may be somewhat silly to ask, but are credit cards widely accepted in Cleveland (e.g., cabs, bus ticket sales)?
And, is it safe to go out to eat at night (I would assume yes, but some Interview Feedback is saying otherwise)? Alone? If so, what's a good place?

Credit cards are widely accepted in stores around Cleveland but not on cabs or buses. I think it would be best if you bring some lose change and cash for the cabs and buses.

As for safety, the Cleveland Clinic campus is pretty safe (I've been around the campus at some pretty odd hours when I did reasearch there and nothing bad ever happened to me). That being said, if you go a few blocks beyond the campus, the neighborhood becomes a little sketchy. I would really advise you to stay at the Intercontinental even if you have to pay a little extra, CCLMer is correct. The hotel is in the middle of the campus and directly connected to the hospital so you never have to go outside at night. There are also a bunch a cafeterias and eateries in the hospital that are open all night if you need to find something to eat.

hey for any of you that have been interviewed already for CCLCM, how indept do they grill you about your research? and also about healthcare? Im an international student and dont know how much i should know abt healthcare esp with all the reform bills being passed. Also how soon after the interview do we get a response? i have mine scheduled for end of january and im nervous/excited.

I would definitely be as familiar with your research as you possibly can.

I wonder if you can get a 'pass' on the healthcare reform because you are international? Interesting question. I would hit up websites like NPR.org or CNN.com which have a decent synopsis of what has happened thus far in the debate. That way, you can at least follow along with anything they may ask.

As to other discussions, correct me if I am wrong but CCLCMer was arguing to stay at the suites. I stayed at the Suites as well, which is cheaper and only academically less convenient than the main Continental across the street from LRI. But there is a big price differential, if I recall.

I walked the couple of blocks to the LRI, it was a nice morning wake up. I was nice to start my interview day getting lost in the hospital and being in awe of the place! Challenge: Get Starbucks from the main hospital before getting to LRI from the Suites. :meanie:

I got an invitation!!! *heart exploding with joy and joyness*

*FOR THE REGULAR MED SCHOOL, NOT CCLM, SO AS NOT TO CONFUSE LOCATION*

I'm sort of freaking out because I selected the earliest possible interview (happy!) but the date means it's hard to find someone able to host me!

I've emailed most of the people on the Case list and found someone that will (yay!) host me the night of the 4th (couldn't get an evening flight grr) but no idea if anyone will be able to on Sunday night the 3rd! That's the most important night before the interview.

Anyone have any ideas? >_<

All I wanted to be was an engineer too! I went through 4 years of engineering before I realized it had NOTHING to do with trains! Dang!

😀

Took me a while to realize that a) I'm not all that entranced by hardware and that b) really, I'd rather pilot one of these than build one:

First of all, congratulations! As most people are doing the whole holiday thing right now, responses might be a little on the slow side.:luck:

I think I already answered most of your questions concerning transportation and lodging logistics. If you stay in either Intercontinental hotel, they have their own restaurants located inside. There is also a cafeteria, some restaurants, and a new 24-hour AuBonPain in the hospital. (Yes, I am a little bitter about that ABP not being open yet when I was on rotations.)

As for safety, it is important to remember that both Case and CCF are urban campuses. I have never had any problems in 3.5 years of living here beyond occasionally being asked for money, but you should not take chances and go looking for trouble, either. The CCF campus is well-patrolled and safe, but I would highly recommend that you not go wandering around by yourself, at night, in an area you don't know, and especially since you're a girl. Sorry if that comes across as being sexist, but I hope you can forgive me. I promise that you'll get a tour of CCF in the morning that will probably be longer than you bargained for. 😉

Actually, you CAN pay by CC for the red line that goes from the airport to University Rapid station, and also on the Health Line. But I agree that it's a good idea to bring exact change. For anyone else contemplating riding the Cleveland RTA, the cost is $2.25 per ride, and if you're paying cash, you must have exact change. (Don't get me wrong: if you have three ones, they'll take it. They just won't give you back your 75 cents!)

You should definitely know your research very well. Be prepared to explain the background (purpose), hypothesis, applications. You could also be asked to propose some potential future hypotheses and experiments. As for the health care part, I don't know. I think vc7777's advice to read/watch the news is probably good. Hopefully you also are familiar with your own country's health care system in case anyone wants to discuss it with you.

As for when you'll hear back, it depends. If you're coming in January, the soonest you could be accepted is at the end of January. Do a search of this thread for the word "semi-rolling" if you want more info about how the CCLCM admissions decisions are made.

As to other discussions, correct me if I am wrong but CCLCMer was arguing to stay at the suites. I stayed at the Suites as well, which is cheaper and only academically less convenient than the main Continental across the street from LRI. But there is a big price differential, if I recall.
Yeah, there is a pretty significant price differential, and the Suites is really nice. I don't think it's worth paying more to stay at the regular Intercontinental when you could just take the shuttle over to the med school in the morning.

Again, if you actually would LISTEN to me, vc7777, you would remember that I tell people to take the hotel shuttle in the morning, which drops you off right outside the med school building. Of course, if you'd rather wander about aimlessly and risk getting lost on the morning of your interview, that's completely your own prerogative. :meanie:

Coffee, my dear woman! COFFEE....I need coffee in the morning, and that was the price to pay...coffee. The shuttle doesn't go to Starbucks, so I opted out. If the goal is for vc7777 to get to his interview brain-dead, then I would have taken the shuttle. 😀

Myuu, nice 😀.

That explanation would be completely understandable and even excusable, except for one little fact that you conveniently left out: the admissions office provides copious amounts of coffee for the interviewees. So if you had just gotten on the hotel shuttle like a good boy and made a beeline upstairs to the admissions office, there would be two or three whole carafes of coffee awaiting you in the conference room. That's assuming, of course, that you didn't show up so late that your fellow interviewees would have already drunk it all. 😛

Alright...the gloves are coming off...CCLMer or CLCCMer, or whoever the heck you are!

It wasn't on the interview feedback form...BUT...the coffee was...lacking. But then again, it varied from "Conforms to ASTM D-4236" to "Warm Swill" at other places I interviewed! :meanie:

Good thing I had a Jumanji Sized Double Latte with a Half-Pike Skim with Whip before I got there.

My coffee intake is something I can control BEFORE I get there.

So there. There's the truth. I didn't like the coffee. I hope you are happy. The Truth is revealed. I didn't like CCLCM coffee. I gonna go cry now...

Dear SDNers,

For the sake of complete honesty and fairness, I have updated my super-anonymous interview feedback to include my shocking admission that I did not like the coffee. I apologize to my fellow SDNers for my gross misrepresentation of my interview by making this glaring omission.

I ask that you forgive me.

Truly yours,

-VC7777

ASTM D4236 said:
This practice describes the standard procedure for developing precautionary labels for art materials to provide chronic health hazard and precautionary statements based on knowledge that exists in the scientific and medical communities. These statements concern hazards known to be associated with a product or product component(s) when it is present in a physical form, volume, or concentration that in the opinion of a toxicologist has the potential to produce a chronic adverse health effect. This practice applies exclusively to art materials packaged in sizes intended for individual users of any age or those participating in a small group, and does not apply to products appropriately labeled for known chronic health hazards. Also, this practice does not specify test methods for determining whether a substance or product presents adverse chronic health effects. Labels should include the signal word WARNING, list of potentially chronic hazards, name of chronically hazardous component(s), safe handling instructions, list of sensitizing components, information sources, labeling content and product size, and other supplementary information.

Iiiiiinteresting.

Hmmm....

Yes, as in: "My crayola crayons are 'non-toxic'...but I still don't eat them!"

Its a pretty lame-o standard, and I think it is voluntary. Those crazy tox folks! I don't trust them. :meanie:

Say, I heard a good line from a toxicology PhD I knew a long time back. He said "There is no such thing as a toxic substance...just toxic quantities." Don't know if that is true.

OK....

"Say, Vc7777, how bad was the coffee at other interviews?"

"So bad that it came in three sizes: small, medium and LD50" [rim-shot]

You do realize, don't you, that acceptance to CCLCM (and all other medical schools too) is conditional on not only liking the interview day coffee, but embracing it, and in fact, crowing to subsequent interviewees about how great it is? Did you really hate the coffee so much that it's worth being blacklisted from every medical school in the country, thus relegating yourself and your family to the most unsavory part of Michigan for the rest of your lives? Please, vc7777, before you give your answer: think of the children!

On a somewhat puzzling note, why did you still drink the CCLCM coffee when you already had your own coffee from Starbucks? Their latte didn't have enough caffeine for ya? :eyebrow:

For CCLCM, the next subcommittee meeting is January 26.

Uh...because when you get lost AFTER you get your Starbucks coffee on the way to LRI... you have more than enough time to finish your coffee! 😳

And after all the excitement of wondering if I'd ever get there, let alone on time, I needed something to calm me down! 😛

Remember when people used to show excited states by the number of exclamation points they added to a sentence? That was AWESOME!!!!!!!!
