Looking for suggestions for affordable housing. Coming from Chicago, I have been starting to look on line for housing preferably a 2 bedroom with hopes to find another M1 to share costs. It would be nice to be within walking distance of UP and grocery stores. What areas ( streets) should I stay away from? Any prime streets or areas? I would like to do most of my search from home then come in for a weekend to finalize. Thanks for thoughts about this.

Congratulations! Thats great to hear! See you in Cleveland 😀

Congratulations, see you there! 🙂

Congrats! Weclome! Top of the page too...nice 😎

Awesome, congrats! 😀 :hardy:

CONGRATS!!!! :woot:

I hope the waitlist movement continues...:boom: Waiting is no fun.

Congrats, btw were you invited to preview?

Thanks to all! I'm so excited to be heading back to the Clinic...its so close now!

I was invited to second look (and am male for those who PMed) and while I have no idea how many people have come off the waitlist or are left or anything like that, I can say that when Dean Franco called she said that they had only minutes before hand recieved an official withdrawl from an accepted student so I think that this process is just unpredictable and quite spontaneous. Not that that information is tremendously helpful or necessarily news to anybody at this point (I'm sorry!), but knowing what that anxiety is like, I feel like its a little comforting to realize its just out of our hands at this point. Whatever happens though, good luck to everybody!:xf::xf:

Dumb question but does CCLCM use those mannequin dummies to practice basic techniques on before doing it on real people? ...The name of those things escapes me at the moment.

And delayed congrats to stonaye! 🙂

Wow. I did not know that!
Yes, it's a pretty nice perk.

Well, I've officially decided to withdraw from the UP. Best of luck to all of you!
Good luck to you, too. :luck:

CCLCMer:

How many people have been taken off the CCLCM waitlist so far? How many are remaining? Is the WL ranked? How do they decide who to take off?

:scared: Still waiting anxiously...
I think what stonaye said is pretty much right:

I have no additional information to add to this.

I PMed you back, but in case anyone else is interested in knowing the answer to the question, here is what I told IHeartSleep, who specifically asked me about intubating:

CCLCMer said:
No, we don't have a mannequin sim center for students at Case or CCF as far as I know. You most definitely CAN learn to intubate on real people; I tried my first couple while I was on my anesthesia rotation last fall. No broken teeth. It's not like they hand you the equipment and leave you to your own devices--someone walks you through. I think the anesthesia residents have a sim center though, because I did try intubating some dummies for an experiment one of them was doing. But not ever for any of my rotations.

We did have some simulated things we did at the very beginning of third year during bridge week, but I thought it was almost worthless. Drawing blood on a mannequin is nothing like doing it on a real person. Delivering a rubber baby from a rubber pelvis with a velcro placenta stuck to the mother's rubber uterus is nothing like delivering a real baby. I'm not saying simulations are completely useless, but the ones I did were certainly lacking in verisimilitude. Now what WAS useful was that during our anatomy sessions, we got to do procedures on real cadavers. THAT was terrific preparation. I did a pelvic exam, tried using laparoscopic instruments, sutured, etc. It was very similar to doing the same procedures on a live person.

Just got the call from Dr. Mehta - accepted to Case. I interviewed last year and was on hold forever so I have been out of the loop on Case. Actually I was expecting to never hear from them again! 🙂

I'll have to go back to my files and dust off my Case notes now!

You can add me to the tally of people recently taken off of the waitlist. I just accepted a place in the class today after getting an offer last week. I was not invited to the preview and am female, if that helps.

I have a few questions if anyone knows the answers:

1. When do we have to have these financial aid award letters returned? I only recently had time to sit down and figure out the numbers.

2. How often can we change our loans? I remember seeing advice on taking the maximum possible out initially, then adjusting as you figure out your personal spending budgets... but how often can you adjust?

3. When is the white coat ceremony?

Thanks for everyone's time. July 8th is so close =).

wow congrats to all of you!! did you all write letters of intent?? just curious. very happy for you 🙂

I didn't write a LOI. Now I have to decide between Case and Commonwealth in PA, and while I know that seems like an obvious CASE!!!, it's still difficult because Case starts so early. I am still hoping to get in off the waitlist to UCSD or UC Davis, and if I go to Case I could get accepted to those after already starting classes at Case. Does anyone have any advice on this or know anything about withdrawing after classes start? Is that even possible? Huge dilemma!😕 But I know it's a great dilemma to have, and I'm really jumping for joy to have an acceptance to such an awesome school!😀

Thanks! I sent a letter of interest back in January or so, after I was put on hold. I also had a new letter of recommendation sent a couple weeks ago.

I could be wrong, but I thought after you enrolled/started orientation, you're required to withdraw your app from consideration at all other schools, including spots on WLs. But I could be wrong! Anyone know?

Oops, forgot to add my congrats to all of you guys! Awesome!!

thanks for the responses! so exciting. I'm also fairly sure that you can't be on waitlists after having matriculated at a school...

Congratulations to everyone pulled off the waitlists recently!

You can't withdraw from your school to go to another one once classes start for that would result in an unfilled medical school spot, and hence cause the death of several cute and innocent kittens. My understanding is that since schools can see where you've been accepted, if they know that you've started school already they'll just skip over you and move on to the next person on the WL. Most people withdraw from their WLs before school starts anyway.

If it were me, I would not choose to go to Commonwealth just for the sake of having slightly more time to wait for other places. Most movement happens shortly after May 15th, so I don't think you're losing that much. You can always politely tell them about your situation - I have no idea if they really take that into account, but may as well try.

Thanks for the info/advice everyone. I guess I just have to hope CA comes through before I have to make my decision, next Wednesday! If it doesn't, I don't know what I will do. Am I making this harder than it is? Or is it really this complicated😕

well you can take the case spot and wait until school starts right? i think you'll get news from ca before then.

Interesting to see so many accepted off the waitlist for CCLCM so far.

Nonetheless, congrats for getting off the waitlist, CCLCM or Case! Yay for enthusiastic future classmates. 😀

..........I'm in!!! I got the email and the call was on my voicemail! I couldn't be happier right now!
There is no emoticon on the list that fully expresses this joy, so here's the under-used MC Hammer Monkey: :zip:

Congrats GammaMike and WaitingSucks and Eventually and others who're being pulled off the waitlist too!!!

These guys are mostly UP alternate movement. At least, anyone talking about getting a call from Dr. Mehta is UP.

And grats Auriga! Glad your wait wasn't in vain!!!

Siiiccckkk! See you in July!

To everyone else, how are you doing Housing? I was toured around by a student on Sunday during second look, but I need to pick an apartment now. Are most of you:

1. Flying / Driving to Cleveland before school starts (June?) to look for housing?
2. Pick your housing online?
3. Show up a week before classes and stay in a Hotel until you can find somewhere to stay?

I was considering option three as being the most plausible. Gimmie your ideas!

Yes - I know people are getting accepted for UP program. I'm just wondering if there would be more... or this is it

I'm sure there will be more. Odds are a decent number of spaces opened up, and they might not have given all of them out in just one day. Also, not everyone pulled off the WL is actually going to accept the offer, and of those that do, some will withdraw when they get pulled off another WL after May 15th, so more openings will be available later.

Hey Meat,

I found a roommate on the Case Med forum who lived in Cleveland so I just stayed by his place (I'm from Chicago) last week for two days. We set up about 6 appointments in one day. I highly suggest everyone gets housing situated ASAP. Triangle and Waldorf only had four 2 BR/2 BA apartments available for move-in before the first day day of class! We already have signed the lease for Waldorf and I'm sure those other available apts. won't be around much longer.

You need to apartment shop in person rather than just online. I researched all the places we were going to check out (besides Triangle/Waldorf, we went to places in Little Italy, Park Lane Villa, some houses, and a few apt. places on Overlook Road). Believe me, the Internet is not good enough in evaluating your options. You need to inspect the places thoroughly. Some are old. Some are in bad areas. Some are too far from the school unless you want to pay the $60-75 per month school parking pass and drive every day.

My advice would be to find a roommate online through the Case Facebook group or the forum and then plan a day or two to spend in Cleveland. Expect appointments to last about 30 minutes max. PM me if you have any specific questions on places I checked out or anything else.

Yeah, this is definitely one of those things that needs to be done in person. The good news is that the economy isn't exactly hopping around here, so there are plenty of places for you to live in. Whether or not they're also the best place ever is up to you, but, again, that's an in-person determination.:luck:

Got accepted off the UP waitlist today. My first acceptance! Can't wait to meet all my new classmates! 😀

add 1 more to UP - got a call from Christian!

would like some suggestions on places to live - also if people recommend living with someone or by yourself!

congrats to all who got off the waitlist. hope they aren't done making calls!

Laptop finale for Meat-

Dell.com with 30% coupon XRHR$T3JKBPT04 for the E6510:
$1,218 (pretax)
$1,320 (post tax + env fee)

Modifications:
No backpack / External HD / Wireless mouse (resale value at ebay ~$100)
Upgraded to full HD 1920x1080p Display 😍
Every other aspect on the laptop is the same

Case E6510:
$1,475 (pretax)
$1,593 (8% Ohio tax)

Differences:
1600x900 resolution as opposed to 1920x1080 listed above

Price difference: $1,593 - $1,320 = $273 + $65 BING Cash Back = $338 (assuming I get it back >.>)

Not a huge difference, but certainly significant to me. This extra money means I can afford a season pass to Brandywine / Boston mills (snowboarding park 30 minutes south of Case). Also, I am SO stoked about the higher resolution display. I'm a multitasking ***** and LOVE to rock multiple open windows, even considering rocking a 1440x900 XP version inside Windows 7, should be awesome. From what I hear RGB colors are fantastic on the full HD and clouding is minimal.

To all those accepted today, congratulations are in order! WOOTZORZ

EDIT** I used the BING search engine w/ BING cash back. Bing currently gives 5% on dell small business orders, so thats ~$65 more.

I'm just working on my update letter.. and I wanted to say something along the lines of.. please give my application the fullest consideration or seomthing like that.. at the end.. does this sound sort of arrogant? -_-;;

Congrats to everyone who just got in!

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed...

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed...
lkevin and Amy and other alternates, I was shocked since I didn't expect to see any movement until next week at earliest, because of other schools' deadlines, so I think there's still a good number of calls that will still go out later this month. Rooting for you guys!

Thanks everyone! ^_^ Ok2Panic, yes it was def worth it - I finally found my peace with the hope-but-not-too-much-lest-I-be-disheartened wait, and then this email was explosive. I remember we were enduring the gruelling wait together - I didn't see it, did you get the glorious call yet? I see you're "class of 2014" so I'm hoping that means here! If not, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :xf:!!

I'm really happy for you Auriga. Clearly you love Case (as I do), so it's great that you got what you were hoping for. I have a rollercoaster of up and down feelings every day, and I was glad to see movement yesterday and at the same time disappointed that I didn't hear anything. More waiting ahead for us waitlist people...

Thanks Auriga! No call yet, but trying to keep the hope alive. In the mean time, living vicariously through you!

Awww! You'll get in, I have faith! And vicariously is one of my favorite words ^_^ I saw the class of 2014 in your sig, where were you accepted?

Hi all.

This might be my first post (or nearly so) on sdn. I've been following this thread on and off for a few months. Actually, that sounds kind of creepy. Well, I lurk no more.

Case is my first choice. At the moment, I'm on the alternate list (UP) so I have to just keep hoping that I get a call or email or something from someone important at the admissions office.

Reading the posts has been encouraging - it's great to know one is not pacing alone.

I do have a quick question, though. If we're accepted off of the alternate list, how do we hear about it? Phone call? Email? Both? Neither? Smoke Signals? Carrier Pigeon? Owl?

Thanks again for the encouraging words. I'm sure there are others like me that feel a connection to this community although they might not have written anything (yet).

While a letter delivered by Owl-post would be jaw-dropping, I'm not sure our med-school-is-hogwarts metaphor stretches quite that far. Phone call (or call and email) for the university program seems to be the method of choice this year.:luck::xf:

As far as the May 15th deadline goes, does anyone know if it counts as holding 2 acceptances if you already have one and the you were offered an acceptance to Case? I'm just confused because Case told me my deadline to decide was next Friday, May 21st, but I'm not sure if I can go by that deadline or if I have to go by the May 15th deadline.
