Cornell does over accept. No clue where that came from, but it's wrong.

I think there are only a few schools that don't over accept. It's a pretty rare practice

Any advice to waitlisted candidates Dr. Lyss? I'm writing my waitlist letter to the committee (hope I'm not too late), not sure if I'm including too much or too little.

Umm I would say to make it very clear how you would fit into a school like Cornell. Emphasize both what you have to offer the school and what you can gain from an education here. At this point it's not about numbers. I personally think Cornell is a big fit school so it can't hurt to make that as clear as possible. Just be authentic and you can't go wrong!

For anyone interested who was not present at re-visit weekend, at one of the information sessions Dean Miller said something along the lines of: "I can almost guarantee that by the time the class of 2014 matriculates, grading will be pass/fail." I know that it's not a definite but certainly something to hope for if not get excited about.

How many people were there? Did it seem like the class was full or that there'd be waitlist movement? <---Anxious waitlistee

I would say close to 70 people were there but a lot of them still had to make decisions as to where they wanted to go. I think there will be some waitlist movement but that's a guess.

i've been hearing from most schools that there's a lot of waitlist movement starting around mid may when multiple acceptees have to narrow down to one school

I withdrew today. Will be going to WashU St. Louis (sigh) unless I get off any waitlists myself. I wonder if the lucky waitlister will be notified today?

Were you at admit weekend? Where are you waitlisted/holding out on?

I don't think the waitlist moves at any school until May 15th. Gotta wait for all the withdrawals to come on in.

Yeah, there probably won't be any waitlist movement until mid-May. We got a list of accepted students during the revisit and there were probably 200 names on that list.

Can we accept the admission offer by replying to acceptance email and then later withdraw?

Wow, so at least 100 people have to withdraw for the wait list to even move! Thanks for telling us this - very helpful. 200 seems like a whole lot of over-accepting...am I wrong in thinking this? Does anyone know how much the wait list moved last year?

last year 243 were accepted to fill the class. however, if cornell is really going P/F then my guess is we will not see a whole lot of waitlist movement this year. that being said, having 70 people at second look as opposed to 100+ is promising.

There was significant waitlist movement last year on SDN. They gave us the impression on interview day that usually between 20-30 students every year come in off the waitlist. We all are still in the running.

thank you pelliper and mdeast 🙂 I hope WL movement is still as high this year, too!

geez 200 accepted for a class of 103...i thought someone said they accepted around 103...not many people posted on SDN about acceptances at cornell (more people posted for the december acceptances)...either way not looking good for the people on the waitlist..im not expecting anything from here

Edit: never mind read the previous posts..guess cornell does over-accept

Under Represented Minorities [in medicine] AAMC considers African Americans, Hispanics, Latino, Native Americans URMs {Am I missing any?}

I am in a wheelchair and was told by AAMC to go ahead and list myself as URM when signing up for mcat. They said each school decides for themselves what constitutes URM but they thought I'd be hard pressed to find a school that didn't see me as one.

You're not a URM. You may be disadvantaged however.

*shrug* I didn't think so either, since I figured it was based on ethnicity. I just do what the AAMC people say and roll with it. 😉

You're right, it is not solely ethnicity-based, and schools are able to define under-representation wrt a non-ethnicity basis as makes sense for their student body. Totally common misconception, glad that you checked with AMCAS and did the right thing. 🙂

Interesting, did not know that. I mean it makes sense that school's can consider you whatever they want, but I always thought AAMC only considers African American, Native American, and certain Latinos as URM. Because to me a disability is more of a disadvantaged status than a URM status.

there is no URM box to check so it is impossible to "apply as a URM." You just put whatever race/ethnicity you are and the school decides to categorize you as a URM.

Depending on your location, certain other ethnicities can be considered URM that other schools may not consider. I think the common example is something about certain schools in the West considering Pacific Islander as URM because it is underrepresented in their community.

You can choose to apply as disadvantaged though, which I assume you meant. It's not the same as URM tho

To all WCMC students (current or past): What do you guys at WCMC think of WCMC-Q? Do you think that it brings value to your college in Ithaca or do you think lowly of grads from WCMC-Q who are IMGs and leeching off your resources? What is the general impression about WCMC-Q grads in NY or US? Do you guys deem them as competitive and trained as yourselves or there is still that possibility of "inferior education?"

^^^^ I would've left the question a little more open-ended.....

I personally think it's great that the Qatar (pronounced "cutter", in case you were curious) school exists. We don't have a lot of direct interaction with them here in Manhattan, and probably less so for Ithaca. But our lectures are recorded and sent to them directly, or else our faculty travel there to give the same lectures. It's a great opportunity opportunity for students across the globe to obtain a Cornell University MD degree. And believe me, there's enough resources to go around.

During your third year, you will often see Qatar students in the hospital and on your rotations. Just as any student from another medical school, they offer a different perspective that let's you see outside of the Cornell NYC bubble. I think it's beneficial for all those involved.

Thank you for that. So I take that the general impression among the students in NY campus is that students from "cutter" are taken to be as competitive/educated/trained as them so there is no "stigma" attached to their existence when it comes to making connections, applying for residency etc?

I'm not a Cornell student, but I'm under the impression that there is still a huge difference, at least applying for residency. Cornell generally takes a handful for residency (maybe 1-2 for IM I noticed when I was there this year), but other than that, it seems that they still have the same problems that any FMG has.

Yes, the IMG/FMG woes. But looking at the match rates of WCMC-Q for the last two years, they do not seem to be doing too bad for IMGs. Not sure how that will play out in future.

If you're accepted to any US med school, I would consider that over weill qatar. You don't want to have to deal with the headache of the FMG problems to hope for a Cornell residency spot.

Has anyone received financial aid info yet? Or have any insight as to when this will go out?

Nothin here, but I only turned in my stuff last week. I think at revisit they said toward the end of the month?

Awards were mailed out last night!!! Fingers crossed...

Just out of curiousity...anyone else's status change.

Mine now says..."Your application is complete. Since we screen each applicant individually, the process may take a few months. Weill Cornell does not have rolling admissions so we ask that you please be patient. Final decisions are communicated beginning in December. The class is selected in March"

They probably just reset their system for the new cycle (AMCAS 2011 just opened).

So I just called in to ask for an email estimate on fin aid and apparently one of my parents never sent in their 1040, so they haven't even started processing it yet. Needless to say I was a little miffed since nobody bothered to tell me.

Just throwing that out there, since I might not be the only one.

Hey mdeast, mine still says "Your response to our offer has been received" regarding the waitlist response form...so who knows what your change (or my lack of change) means...

Anyone got the link to this year's match list?

So, this is random, but I just got accepted?? Anyone else get this email? I havent' read through, but nervous, b/c do I need to choose by tonight???

Wow congrats! Waitlist movement? I obviously haven't gotten anything. And I think they should probably give you at least a week to decide. How can they expect that you'd even for sure check your email today?

Congratulations!! I assume that you were accepted off the waitlist? I would think that you have more time to make your decision; the way I understand it is that by May 15th you can only hold one ACCEPTANCE to medical school. You have not yet accepted the offer from Cornell, so I think that until you respond to their offer, you can continue to hold an acceptance somewhere else. I think you usually get 1-2 weeks (though that is just from hearing other individuals discussions of the way wait lists work), but it should explicitely state in your acceptance letter when you need to reply by...

Anyways... congratulations again!

Congrats! I would have assumed they would give you a deadline but if not, I'm not really sure the official policy in this case. I'd recommend you read the whole thing haha

HAHAH, I'm sure they expect for the email checking, but it turns out I have 2 weeks. I'm going to see if they have financial aid in time for that decision. I think that will be a big factor. I think Sinai is better, but I'm not sure. This was the last place I expected an offer from!

Hehe congrats with a never ending string of decision making 🙂

I know! Geesh, it took so long for me to give up UCSF. I'm almost relieved to know Columbia hates me given they seem to be interviewing people like nobody's business. Either way, will keep you all posted, I was on the waitlist, but good luck - it seems to be moving!
