Does anyone remember how long after interviews our apps go to committee? I'm really anxious about Howard, after my interview it has really become my top choice. I want to send a letter of intent but I already sent a thank you note to my interviewer, I don't want to annoyingly do too much or too little ahhh. I just have this feeling Howard might think I wouldn't attend...or they just may be on the fence with me.

The wait game begins (for me at least) 😳

If you're 150,000% sure you want to go to Howard, send the letter of intent. The thank you to your interviewer is different, I would think. That was one person versus a committee. Let them know you loved them!

Unless they discouraged letters of intent. I'm not sure. I haven't interviewed yet.

Interviewed on 1/12
Just got the out of committee email today
surprised by their efficiency
I really like the school, hopefully it'll be good news.
fingers crossed...

Hello Guys.

I'm not sure if I should be worried but
My secondary was received in September
I have a 3.45undergrad/34Qmcat/3.62gradgpa
I'm very interested in this school and in practicing medicine in underserved communities.
I've spoken to Ms. Walk before, and we had a really nice conversation, and I got a really good feeling about this school
but no interview invite 🙁
is it too late in the game?
should i call in and ask about my status?

Got the email at 9:49 AM this morning
she mentioned a few of us will go on committee this month, but most of us will be next month... I guess I was one of the lucky few...
don't worry man, you should hear back around this time next month... I know... waiting sucks =/

I'm excited for you guys who are out of committe, I was accepted back in november, and looking back now the suspense was fun. Now I have nothing to look foreward too when I check the emails. Good luck everyone!!!

Do you know when I the lastest time we can send our DAT scores? On the website says everything has to be in by 27...

I know the med school is the 15 of January

You can call, but I read on the website and elsewhere (probably in an email) that interviews will be held through March/early April. So all is not lost. But to put your mind at ease, call and check on your status. :luck:

i would echo the same -- call Ms. Walk and continue the conversation where you left off with your last one. theres a fine line between showing your interest and be an annoyance; so use your best judgment while making your interest known. with the most applicants to ever apply to HU, you have to stand up and make yourself known.

personally, i called and had conversations with Ms. Walk at least twice a month until i received my interview invitation last week. persistence pays off.

congrats on your invite! What's the number to call to talk to Ms.Walk? I call this number 202.806.6279 and the person who answers the phone is always Ms.Jones.

I think Ms Jone is the available number you call until you are accepted. You'll get forwarded along and sometimes Ms Walk'll pick up Ms Jones line if she's away from the desk. I think Ms Walk's direct line is given to accepted students to save her from phone-blowing-up-syndrome.

I agree persistence is key but calling twice a month is a lot. (Congrats on the interview Arwo743!) Calling once a month to check on where you are in the application process is fair.

How long does it actually take to get confirmation of a complete application? I know they said up to 4 weeks after they receive your secondary ... I sent my secondary in at the beginning of November and haven't heard anything. Should I give them a call or wait it out a little longer?

I would email howard 1st wait a few days then call them. But I would email them first

Same situation here. I called in week 7, but they weren't able to tell me anything. Then Ms. Walk emailed me the next week saying that my confirmation email had been sent out, but for some reason hadn't gotten to me. So maybe that's what happened to you.

Did you send your secondary express or signature confirmation or something that would tell you whether or not they received it? If not, I would call. Because heaven forbid they didn't get it, you might not be able to submit it again due to the deadline passing.

Does Howard only accept African Americans? Does it have a preference for African Americans?

no to the first question, and i'm not sure for the second but i bet someone else will know. i think it likes minorities of all kinds as well as those who are interested in working with the underserved/minorities. it is a historically black school, so take from that what you may.

I think experiences/interests in working with underserved communities is the key in getting into Howard, especially if you are not African American.
I am Asian and I got an interview, and Asian Americans are def not considered minority in medicine.

I called today and found out I am accepted!!

Hey Tally, am I supposed to send the person who interviewed me a thank you note? she was very nice.. I e-mailed Ms. Walk to find out her full name but have not received a reply yet. I know Ms. Walk is extremely busy and I dont want to bother her. I am not sure what is the post interview protocol..

If you remember what the person did for the university you can browse the email list for names that look familiar. There's a section of the website that organizes email contacts by department. Good luck.

I can tell you I'm puerto rican, so that's false. Qualities that show you want to help the under-served is what counts the most, being black, white, and pink doesn't count for much.

No they don't just accept African American. Go visit the campus and you'll see it's growing more diverse. I rember Ms Walk talking about this. She said that the campus is open and hoping to reach all under-served communities and so are accepting all applications who can add to this aim. It is a HUCM, and it is predominately african american still.

hey all, congrats to those who have already gotten accepted and good luck to those who have upcoming interviews. I was just on here to firstly ask if anyone could inform me of the name of the facebook group for accepted students. Also, does anyone no any resources available for good spots to live while attending Howard? Any good personal suggestions?

For those who already got accepted, how long does it take to find out the decision since the "out of committee" email? I've been out of committee since 1/22... the email says "decision will be mailed in about two weeks". It's almost two weeks... anxiously waiting... =/ anyone else on the same boat?

Yeah I got that same email around october 22 or so, and I found out 11/20 I was accepted. I think they email accecptances on the 15th of every month. Also you will get an email that will tell you they mailed out the letter and you can call Mrs. Walk for the decision.

Does Howard typically send post interview rejections at this point in the cycle. Is an out of committee email a good sign? Just curious. I'm still waiting but getting antsy.

How long did it take yall to get the out of committee email after the interview? Just want to get the expectations timed right. So I'm able to do my normal things without staring at my email like I was the Rainman or something.

I sent it with delivery confirmation and was informed that they had received it early Dec. I called Ms. Walk (who was really nice and helpful) on Monday and she said that she did not see my application anywhere. I kept the receipt from my money order and I called Western Union and the money order has NOT been cashed. I'm freaking out that they lost it and that I won't be able to re-apply because the submission date was Jan. 15th. =( Ms. Walk told me to call again on Friday so I am praying that they found it in the meantime.

Same thing happened to me and Rosalind Franklin. I've had so many problems with general USPS that I gave up and started using FedEx. And the fact that two months later the check still hasn't been cashed and they haven't acknowledged me tells me that they really didn't get it, and USPS probably got really lazy and screwed me over. USPS has made me really bitter. 😡

All the same, I hope the Admissions office finds your envelope! Or if they don't, that they'll have a heart and let you re-send. RFU all but laughed in my face when I asked them what else I could do about the situation.

Good luck.:luck::xf:

I had the same experience with Howard about things being missplaced. My acceptance deposit was lost for about a month (Sent: Dec 1. Found: Jan 5 -- Just about.) I went through the same steps -- cked with my bank the ck wasn't cashed, USPS had a date and name of who signed for my deposit, and kept in contact with HUCM the whole way (very nice the whole way) -- but it just never made it's way to the admissions people's desk.

My deposit was found the second they started mailing me back my duplicate secondary fee. It turned out that who ever did the filing misfiled my deposit. Maybe that's what happened to yours.

Perhaps there's a way that they will let you send your appilcation via email as a PDF? I know it's not how they do things, but... time spent looking for your secondary is taking away time from reviewing it... so maybe they would be nice and make an exception? Or just go ahead and ask them if it's ok to just expressed another copy of your secondary?

i have a question.
i never really talked about working in underserved communities in my primary application. is that a bad thing?

Quick question: For those who interviewed, how long after you were notified your application was complete did you get an invite to interview?

For all of you who are interviewing, relax. It is a very pleasant experience. BTW. Take a copy of your secondary with you. You will be asked to fill out a few questions, it will be helpful if you remember what you have written in your secondary. and in case they require it again.

I would love to do all of this. But alas, no interview invite. And no interview. Makes me sad.

My app was complete on 11/5 (applied late) and I still have no status update. Is this normal? It's been 3 months since I submitted my app, I have no interview, no waitlist, no rejection, nothing. I have a 31/3.5 and I'm a 28 yr old/nontrad applicant. I thought I'd have SOME chance at Howard.

I think the only email they send is your Secondary Application Received. Then they send nothing until you're invited for an interview.

In reality, we all feel that we should have a chance at Howard. Question is, does Howard feel we are worthy? With Howard, it's more than stats. It's what you have done to back up your stats as far as the whole applicant goes. Not to say that you haven't made significant contributions to your community, but...maybe someone else has made more. Or has expressed themselves more eloquently. Sucks for the rest of us who feel that we're worth it, but I can't knock Howard. I love Howard. 😍 I trust they know what they're doing, and that what they're doing is best for their community, even if they feel it's not us. And don't forget! The interview season is not over. You could get an invite this week. Keep hope alive.

But this brings up a good question. Has anyone ever seen a rejection letter from Howard? Of all the MDApplicant stats I've looked at, anyone who's applied to Howard always has Application Complete, never Application Complete, Rejected, or Attended Interview, Rejected. I'd rather a rejection than no answer years down the line.

Just to add to this. I am not a howard student but i know several people who work on the 5th floor. Let me put it this way. A white person who want to do family practice has a better chance of getting into howard than a Black person who wants to do cosmetic surgery.

The difference is they want the one who is more likely to serve underserved populations

has anyone gotten an out-of-committee email from howard lately?? I interviewed mid-january and Ms. Walk told me i would be going to committee the last Thursday in January...i never got such an email and am worried they put me aside for later consideration

I am absolutely positively in love with the school and am really hoping for some good news in the next two week (she said they send letters in batches every mid-month)

the committee meets on the 15th of each month. if you interviewed in mid-jan, then you were probably too close to their jan meeting, which means that you will be voted on in the upcoming feb 15th meeting. just try to relax. one thing to remember is that there are 6,000 applicants this year to howard and only ~300 interviewed; so, if you got one of the interview slots, you are a solid candidate for howard. and if you are put off for later consideration, that could - definitely - work in your favor.
