"School of Medicine leadership has also taken note once again that there appear to be continuing problems with USN&WR’s ranking methodology and its numbers, particularly in its reporting of National Institutes of Health research funding to medical schools. The USN&WR data do not align with NIH and other public database figures.

USN&WR does not require a standardized approach for institutions, which all self-report their information. Nor does the magazine cross-check self reported information with official databases. The differences could be significant, because the grant dollars account for a substantial part of the weight in the magazine’s calculation of overall rankings.

As one example it may be that some institutions calculated into their totals stimulus grant (ARRA) funding awarded in the last several days of September, 2009. Hopkins did not do so because we only use the official public NIH awards data.

JHM has raised the issue with USN&WR and the magazine has expressed interest in continuous improvement and standardization in its data gathering. “We would hope the magazine will establish standard ways to support rankings using official public agencies such as NIH and other recognized data bases,” Miller adds."

wow that sounds like a lot of bitch*ng to me for a school thats always ranked highly. if they hated usnews so much, maybe they should take down the excessive number of huge usnews #1 hospital posters.
their undergrad dropped a bit and they pretty much said that those rankings don't mean anything.

It's clarification for people who invest in the SOM. I guessed before this statement was even made that the reason for the drop was related to the ARRA. I did not consider that the SOM did not report their ARRA funds though.

most schools have some shady activity when it comes to reporting research $. and why are these problems "continuing"? i doubt there were problems the last few years when it was #2

its just they had some grad programs drop in ranking as well as the Ugrad, but i didnt see anyone complaining/caring

Very true. It's how Harvard is 100 year after year. I figure if Hopkins had a better accounting program, we could pull that kind of stuff too. What a shame.

100? sarcasm?

Harvard SOM is 100/100 in research, and has been 100/100 for a while.

oh ok. you can pretty much argue anything with statistics. would be nice if the som just ignored it instead of saying they have continuing problems, which only showed up now

100 is not the raw score, the scores are normalized as percentages of the top score

So, uh...is anyone who interviewed on or around Feb. 19 still waiting on a response? Does that mean I've been essentially waitlisted? Argh the suspense

I think that all the rest of the Friday interviews are going to be discussed this Tuesday, April 20. Then we should all be getting answers (either a phone call very soon after for an acceptance or a waitlist or rejection letter later on).

sorry to hear smmypnts, hope you have other choices!
when was your interview?

got a pre-interview rejection letter the other day. but saw that one coming!

i'm so undecided about matriculating 🙁

i love the facilities and resources, but i'm having a hard time getting over baltimore and the reputation of a competitive environment. the match list also bothers me. everyone says that hopkins students do really well on the match. but a huge number go to jhh. are students choosing to stay because they grow to love hopkins and baltimore or are students staying because it's a top hospital in which they have a foot in the door (= easier to match at)? i would appreciate input from current students especially 3rd and 4th years. what's it like during clerkships? is it a very mean spirited culture in the hospital? i heard from many people that hopkins has a very hierarchical culture. and how hard is it to get honors during clerkships and is the first 1.5 years true p/f without any internal ranking? (trying to see what external factors there are in competitiveness). also, revisit folks who have been to hms or columbia, how was the student vibe different from hopkins? pm me please!

That's a reputation for the undergrad, not the medical school. Most of the people work hard and are incredibly brilliant, but while it's fun to say people are gunners, they're gunners because they are studying not because they're trying to screw other people. That's a given at every medical school.

Most students get multiple interviews at top-teir academic programs, and those that choose Hopkins did so because they set it as their number one school, not because it was all they could get.

All the second, third and fourth years in rotations that I know are currently loving it.

If you have great interpersonal skills, and you understand what you are doing, you'll have Honors. On the other hand, if you are just a great book worm and have a terrible personality, you'll sink like lead zeppelin. There are no real rankings. Sure they could generate them if they wanted, but there is no indication that they will. Most of us study enough to be competent, but not for the top score. And if it was ranked, things would not be different.

Good luck.

Is it the calm before the storm....of acceptances, waitlists and rejections?

It seems like it. From the other waves, it seems like acceptance calls go out on Thursday and the rest come later in the mail. I guess all we can do is try not to think about it for one more day...

Good luck everyone! I hope your dreams come true. I think I may go to Hopkins in the fall, however, I live in OK and it's very far away... 😎 but I'll let you all know if you want

Does anyone know the target number of acceptances this year and whether they plan on taking people from the waitlist?

Also if anyone gets a call from Dean Hicks, please let all of us know. Good luck everyone! I am praying that all of us who desperately want to go to Hopkins can be classmates next year.

Does anybody know when they're going to meet to discuss interviewees from Mar 12 (last day of interviews! =D)? I remember Dean Hicks saying we can expect to hear back in 6-8 weeks, which would be soon!

I think (not 100% sure) that all the interviews were discussed on April 20.

I'm pretty sure this is correct and that all remaining interviews were discussed on Tuesday. Today should be D-Day...

Good luck to everyone. 👍

Got the call around 1:20 pm today!!! So excited and definitely going. Such a relief for a disappointing admissions cycle!

Good luck to all those people still waiting to hear back. I am praying for all of you to get in!

im suprised. is this your 1st acceptance? that'd be pretty weird.

guess you dont have to worry anymore

No. I got into some state schools, nothing in the top 30. Trust me. There is hope for everyone in my situation. Don't give up hope!!

JasonE, I am surprised too. I called Hopkins again to make sure it was the right Hopkins, the right Valerie Mazza, the right Baltimore, etc. lol. :luck:

Got an email today saying that the class has been filled and asking if I wanted to remain on the alternate list....did everyone else get that?

Application Complete 1/15, Interviewed 3/12, received "alternate list" e-mail this morning. Does anyone know how many acceptances were sent out this year? Are they expecting to move more than 3 people off the waitlist as asaCatom said they did last year?

BTW- Great routine during the white coat ceremony! I take it there are a couple ex-Bhangra/Desi Fusion dancers in the first year class? Ahh makes me wish I had an acceptance here even more!

And good luck to y'all where ever you end up-- if you're reading this, I'm sure you have the motivation to do great things.

Hey everyone. I interviewed in early February and have yet to receive a phone call or email of any sort. People I know who interviewed after me were sent a rejection email.
Does anyone know if acceptance calls are still being made? I'm a wreck!

Hi All,

Is there a difference between a waitlist and an alternate list? I am on the alternate list.
Do you know if any of these are ranked and when we should be hearing, if at all?

Withdrew. Alas, JHU, you were my first med school love, but it was never meant to be. Hope more than 3 people get off the waitlist this year! :luck:

i guess thats the equivalent of premed suicide

When I withdrew I was told there were people on the wait list that would be receiving calls soon FWIW. (admissions officer said there were people waiting in the wings that would be very excited to have my spot, "some that call me in the office almost every day" lol)

Anyone get in off the waitlist?? I heard that it hasn't even been touched yet!

anyone here living in reed next year? what does the number after the room assignment mean? (e.g. 12D-3). i know the first part is the suite, but what is that 2nd number for? are we assigned rooms/does that indicate priority?

The second number indicates your room number within the suite. 1-3 are about the same size with 4 usually being slightly bigger because its on the end.
