MSTP A earlier today! Complete early July, interviewed late January (literally the last MSTP interview date lmao so keep your hopes up!
Congratulations! Quick question- were you initially on a wait list for Hopkins MSTP? I'm trying to understand if they place all candidates who were not offered acceptance post-interview on the wait list.

Nope! I interviewed less than 2 months ago and this was the first I’d heard from them since then :)

What is the approx turnaround time for February interviews?

I believe they said they will release the decisions end of March / early April? And I think that might be the last batch of A's

Do we think there's gonna be a batch on Monday the 15th?? I'm so nervoussss this is the only school I'm holding out for.
Ah wait @roasted_oolong you did try to drop a hint on this. I really hope so. I tried to convince myself to not think about it until it happens but now you got me thinking

Last year they wrapped up interviews a week earlier than this year. Entirely possible they decide to release decisions this year on March 15th (AAMC Deadline for #As = expected class size) or hold off until next week. I don't know which is better 😬

Do we have an idea of how many students are already accepted?

Website says April....
  • Early April: Final round of decisions sent to acceptances and rejected candidates

Website says April....
How recently was said website updated? I made my peace with "late March" at the notice of the assistant dean of admissions. I will be miffed if that has changed without proper notification and reasoning provided.

Not sure but I think it was updated at some point in the cycle b/c I remember seeing it in March at one point (?) Maybe?

I get the feeling this is like the ultimate last date, but they may do something before that date too. There maybe people who turn down an acceptance or whatever, and they'll send out all the rejections at that time? Like they're saying we'll definitely have all those notices sent out by early April and be done with that part of the process.

Have accepted students heard about a date for second look weekend?

Is there a certain day or day of the week people are more likely to hear a decision? Or could it be any time before April 15? Thanks!

March acceptances last year came out on March 16 which was a monday, but searching to the previous year...
2019: it was March 26, a Tuesday
2018: it was March 28, a Wednesday
2017: it was March 28, a Tuesday
...not going any further back lol. But it seems like last year's March 16th was more of an anomaly? Idk! I'm just gonna be on the edge of my seat for the next 2 weeks.

As I recall...March 16th was right around the time when the entire world was shutting down so maybe they sped everything up to get it done faster

For some reason on my interview date, I thought I heard them say it was going to be March 31st, but maybe I misheard/misinterpreted

Well, given the propensity of the adcom to release decisions on the last Tuesday or Wednesday of March, 3/31 is looking like a plausible date.

do you (or anyone else) know how covid made matching more difficult? im guessing applicant pool size couldnt have changed too much since med school class sizes are pretty fixed, so is it that the number of residency spots were reduced?

Yes. Many. At least 8 I've heard of so far, could be more I dont know about yet.
How does this even happen at a place like Hopkins, and what are their next steps? That's around 7% of the class, correct?

Are you talking to peers at similar schools? Is this a Hopkins fluke, or was the T5 match rate below 95% this year?

Lots of factors. For competitive fields where multiple away rotations are the norm, aways being cancelled was a big hit to people's ability to express interest in specific programs and impress them. We had very crowded fields in some competitive specialties this year (eg 12+ people applying ENT) which makes it even tougher to differentiate yourself from your peers. Advising was hit or miss with some people applying to much less than the avg number of programs and having fewer interviews as a result. Certain departments have been consistently weak (name and shame: Ortho), for example matching only 1 of 5 men who applied this year, after already failing to match an excellent candidate last year. I know for a fact multiple of the failed matches had 250+ boards, papers, and strong grades and letters. That strikes me as unacceptable but I won't speculate on what could be done about it, that's above my pay grade.

I've checked in with some buddies at other t20 private schools and they were also getting hit much harder than past years. Our failed matches were all in very competitive fields, but other schools have been seeing failures to match in more typical fields like IM, GenSurg, OBGYN.

None of these schools will provide this data, even internally, so take this all with a giant grain of salt. It's just rumors among students as we try to headcount.

So, WTF? This is super scary and concerning. Are you maybe suggesting that COVID, and its impact on away rotations, eliminated a huge advantage normally enjoyed by top schools? And, more important for people like you (and, hopefully, me :)), if this causes programs to realize they don't need top schools to feed them top candidates, will this reduce any advantage T5, T10, or T-whatever candidates have going forward? If so, wouldn't it be ironic that, while everyone was worried that Step 1 going P/F was going to make school rank that much important, it turns out that COVID ended up making school rank even less important?

As a mere pre-med, I do have a fundamental lack of understanding of one aspect of the match. I was under the impression that SOAP worked to hook up most unmatched candidates with something. Is that just not the case with competitive specialties, because there are no unfilled positions? If so, is it also impossible for unmatched rock stars to SOAP into less competitive specialties because there is no time to submit a compelling last minute application to them? Can't blame Hopkins students for aiming high!

Exactly what happens to unmatched T5 rock stars??? This possibility never occurred to me, at least not on the scale you are describing this year. This is supposed to be a Caribbean problem, not a Hopkins, Penn, UCSF one!!!!!

I think we were used to having success with short app lists, and that was especially problematic during COVID when people lacked the usual connections to their top choices (ie, no auditioning). Certain departments also refuse to prioritize strong internal candidates - for example Ortho took zero home candidates. This is extremely problematic during COVID when most places are going to be giving a lot of spots to their own students, since only their own students worked with them in person this year. I doubt widespread change of opinion about where you went to school was much of a factor.

There are usually not SOAP spots for competitive fields, or if there are, it's for a reason. For example there was an Ortho program with 3 of 3 open positions that was brand new in a location few would call desirable. It's usually an option to SOAP over into a different specialty like Anesthesia or Radiology, for example last year there were ~40 programs in those specialties including some academic centers. This year there were only a few programs.

The most common thing is to take a research year - sometimes unpaid - and then reapply to a very broad list and a backup specialty. It's had mixed results for people in the last couple years.

Thank you very much for the candid, detailed and thoughtful response. I might not have been clear regarding the point in bold above. I didn't mean to suggest there was a widespread change of opinion this year. This year's situation was clearly driven by circumstance. My question was, and it's admittedly too early for most to even start thinking about, whether this year's experience will make school rank less important going forward, assuming those who did match from less prestigious schools do well?

Got an acceptance email this evening! No phone call though

Earlier this week I answered a phone call with a Maryland area code (i'm in the midwest so that's rare), thinking it'd be the call. but when i answered it was just a robot saying "there's been suspicious activity on your social security number blah blah"
