Waitlisted. Pretty much expected it. It's better than a rejection, but I want to go to a school that actually wants me.

31 secondaries
7 interviews (one for waitlist spot)
2 waitlists
1 acceptance
-1 pending

Boy am I grateful for my acceptance! And like a previous poster said - for those of us who have acceptances elsewhere at least we have more direction for where we're going. For the rest of you - good luck and I definitely feel for you in this tiring and often unreasonable/illogical process. Ciao.

31 secondaries?!? Jesus that's a lot of writing...

Yeah, I kind of wanted to die, lol. Thank God I wasn't in school at the time and had nothing else to do. Even with that though, I didn't finish all of them. did 36 primaries, but only 31 secondaries. 😉

Too bad you can't let the school know about doing 31 secondaries, this would definitely be a positive attribute to be able to write so many high quality essays in a short time.

Well, perhaps the quality wasn't good enough and that's why I didn't get in? lol jk It's a good thought though, I wish they would care about that! Mostly had to apply to so many schools since I'm from California schools and getting into a school here is near impossible.

Anfleish - are you gonna hold out hope for NYU or pretty much thinking you'll end up somewhere else? I'm assuming you were waitlisted as well?

I am cautiously optimistic from what several of last years students have said. It seems they have the opinion that much of the class is made up of previously waitlisted students. For more than one of them to say this, it has to be somewhat true. I have some other schools brewing that I really like too (all March dispositions). Luckily I have spring break and March madness to distract me.

has anyone already written/started writing their letters of interest post-waitlist? also, can someone confirm: since they haven't accepted us, nyu can't see any of the other schools we've been accepted by, correct? so is it faux pas to mention other schools in a letter, to make oneself more attractive/less desperate/genuinely interested in attending, if that's the case?

Anyone have an idea about how much the Waitlist moves?

What would you guys choose: Sinai or NYU?

I liked them pretty much equally. The majority of people on SDN seem to have an infatuation with sinai though that I just don't really get.

Jman and EW, what did you guys find lacking about Sinai's facilities? I actually thought they were superior to NYU's.

I'm gonna join into the webinar even though I'm waitlisted - you never know I might come off it, haha. 🙂 I guess we can all discuss it afterwards!

I have two questions that I want to ask during the webinar, but I don't have speakers (just earphones). If anyone else wants to know the answers, could you ask these questions for me?

1. How much will housing cost, now that there are new dorms? Are they studios or do we have roommates in the new dorms?

2. Are the pre-clinical years going to be 1.5 years or 2 years??? This is a make-or-break point for me. I see the benefit of 1.5 years pre-clinical, but I'm not that bright so I really don't want 6 months less to prepare for the boards than everyone else will get across the country.

YES-i was starting to feel like I was the crazy person here

ive worked at sinai for two years--the few floors of annenberg dedicated to the medical school have enjoyed a renovation somewhat recently, so i think the interview day might have left many people convinced that the hospital and facilities as a whole are impressive/nice/wev, but in reality this place is a pit and i would never come here/recommend the school to anyone else with a serious alternative (*especially* nyu) on the table.

Eh, I'd have to disagree or rather, devalue the importance of it. I toured both schools and I've been to Sinai loads of times to visit friends. I think both have pretty much equally old facilities and housing, and if there is a difference, it's negligible to have any effect on your medical education. I think I personally thought Sinai's were slightly better, just because it seemed like everything at NYU was in a basement and the sections we toured of Sinai had been renovated. And personally, I'd much rather be having a crappy day and look out the window over Central Park than the East River. They also just finished construction on a new Center for Advanced Medicine (outpatient medical care) that's brand spanking new to rotate through...and they are constructing a new research complex to be completed in less than 2 years for those interested. I'm sure you could disagree with this though and maybe it was just my interview day impression. (Also, I liked NYU and I'm still considering it vs. Sinai at this point).

Jeff and Temple both just built brand-new medical school buildings, with state-of-the-art everything. They're way nicer than NYU, Sinai, even Columbia or Cornell's "hotel" teaching facilities. Do I think they're better medical schools than NYU or Sinai because of it? Absolutely not.

Also, if anyone here thinks working in old facilities is gross...this is medical school. EVERY hospital in America has sections that are old, run-down, etc. I'm sure as a pre-med you've worked in them at some point. This is medical school, not a Fortune 500 company. It's just how it works. Sinai Medical Center and NYU medical center are even at the top end of the spectrum (they're ranked 19 and 17 respectively on US News' Honor Roll). I've worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital and HUP, and I can say they too both have terribly ****hole sections as well.

Does anyone know if the webinar will be able to be replayed at a later date? I have class tonight from 6-8

So they are going to the 1.5 preclinical format.

Good.

Is anyone else totally freaked out by the 1.5 pre-clinical year plan? Not only is the time reduced by 1/4 (talk about condensing!), but we're then given a FULL year to forget it all before the Step.😱

Or you can study Step stuff during your clinical time... which makes it much harder to excel during the rotations. And we know by now how much rotation grades count!

Most schools that already do this have seen positive effects...students (after going through a year in the clinics) better understand clinical reasoning, which is important for the types of questions asked on the Step 1.

I think the curriculum and dorm changes are both very positive things. I'm much more likely to stick with NYU than I was before that webinar.

My question is - how exactly are they planning on trimming the fat from the curriculum? That wasn't completely clear in the webinar. I'm all for reducing the amount of detailed, esoteric knowledge that will only be useful for certain rotations/specialties (I think they used the example of cutting down the info devoted to tumor biology). I'm just afraid that in condensing the curriculum by 4-6 months, we will be worked like dogs during those 1.5 pre-clinical years. I'd be curious to know an estimate of what they think the amount of lecture time per day will be now. I wonder if we are looking at 9-5 lecture days?

Does anybody know what time the Second Look welcome/reception will start on Thurs 4/22?

So there's been some talk about NYU v. Sinai. How about NYU v. Cornell? Anyone trying to decide between these 2? Or all 3?

Didn't get a chance to make it to the Webinar...but was there any mention of waitlist/waitlist movement etc?

Unfortunately no...and that was the only reason I tuned in! I asked a question about it but it wasn't answered. They mentioned something about posting unanswered questions and responses on the website, but I'm not sure if that will happen.

Good.

im not too sure how i feel about this...the upcoming class will be the first class to go through this new shortened curriculum and they will certainly be some hiccups in the beginning...because they dont have prior experiences some classes are going to be HELL with sooo much information that will be rushed like crazy...the classes entering in subsequent years are the ones that are going to benefit from the mistakes they make with the upcoming class which is essentially serving as a guinea pig...all the current NYU students seemed really relaxed and i REALLY hope this new curriculum doesnt add more stress or anxiety for its first year class...and i REALLY REALLY REALLY hope class days are not longer..and are they going to change the attendance policy??...anyone have information on any of this???

I thought the Webinar was great. I am particulary excited about the new simcenter in 2011. 1.5 years of preclinical also a positive I think. I dont see them cramming more into the first 1.5 years...just moving other stuff towards the back end. I can't wait to start! Time to start to tell my other schools thanks but no thanks.

Same here. The Webinar helped me along in my decision making process, and fired up about the revisit...

does anybody know what the exam schedule/average class time per day is like?

I also missed the webinar and was wondering if they mentioned anything about housing?

I also missed the webinar and was wondering if they mentioned anything about housing?

A fair amount actually. 26th Street dorm will be ready for us in July/August. They have not settled on a price but it will be less than 1K per month. Most of the building is 2 bedroom plus living aree, kitchenette and bathroom. There are a limited number of studio type rooms. Building was recently upgraded but they are going to redo some lounge areas and the fitness room. They are also plannning on adding study areas.

Oh, so is that where all of the students will be housed or is there another dorm?

The impression I got is that 26th street will be far and away the primary dorm. They did say they were working on a place for "couples" housing at another place...but no details on that .

That's when I'm visiting. Do you know any more details about schedule or what to expect other than that first email?

Just the email - Thursday evening (a meal at a restaurant?), and then Friday during the day.

Do it Youself? no, they sent me that date. Perhaps its an mstp thing?

anyone know if the info about the new curriculum is on their website? or ANYWHERE 'official'? (and as an aside --- anyone sent LOIs? Where to?)

Email I received today:

Dear Applicant,

Below is the link to access the Webinar session that was held on March 10th.

just withdrew, so keep holding out if you're on the waitlist!

Question for NYU: When I have the option of attending a state school for $20,000 a year less (not including interest) than it would cost me to attend NYU, can you help assure me that I will not regret my decision when the bill finally comes due?

Health care is currently a volatile market. Borrowing that much extra money to attend NYU just for Bellevue makes me nervous. If the administration let me know what NYU could do for me over other schools, I would be much more comfortable making the extra investment.

So far, they haven't made a very good case. Maybe thats why so many of their accepted students eventually decline.
