in my own little imaginary world, im going to believe that most of those kids that are set on going to stanford will defer admission for one year and all the SDN waitlistees will be admitted.

I'm being optimistic and saying that 50 are definitely set on going, 10 on the fence and the rest will pull out as they get off the waitlist at other places. That leaves a solid chunk up for grabs. THATS MY STORY AND I'M STICKING TO IT

Should start a facebook group. "Wolfiemd's Imaginary Stanford Class of 2014"

I was just at admit weekend. Just to update some of you on what is going on at the admission committee since I talked to a few of them when I was there:

1. 72 students did attend Admit Weekend.
2. They accepted about 130-140 applicants this year
3. My rough estimate says about 20 attendees at the admit weekend are considering other options: Stanford/Harvard/JHU/UCSF/Yale
4. Stanford likes to have a big waiting list because in the words of one adcom officer "All the top schools are competing for the same applicants; therefore, the waiting list is CRUCIAL".
5. They emphasize that they want a small class size for intimacy

Some other comments:
1. Stanford is AWESOME!
2. For a top notch school, the students are incredibly happy
3. Rumors about Stanford being a bad school clinically is completely false. Some of the current students hope that SDN doesn't continue to propagate that rumor.
4. The flexible curriculum allows ample amount of time to pursue other endeavors

Oh man, I don't know if this is good or bad information! 🙁 🙁
130-140 admits seems ridiculously high for a class of 86. Plus with 72 people going to second look, for only 86 spots?? That also sounds high.

However, one ray of hope is that in 2009 they accepted 172 applicants total, and wasn't that the year when "virtually no one got off of the waiting list"? If they've only accepted 140 this year, then that's at least 32 less than the number they had to accept in 2009 to fill their class. I'm waiting for the new data from USNews to compare this year with last year.

Edit: I forgot to say muchas gracias for this information!

Thanks for the comments. So that puts it at about 52 students committed. I think 20 is a good number, as some of those "committed" students may end up getting in off waitlists elsewhere and enrolling (or changing their minds), just as some of those "on-the-fence" students will eventually enroll at Stanford. That leaves 34 spots, but I do assume there are at least a fair chunk of students who are definitely attending but couldn't make admit weekend. So, lets cut that in half to 17.

Was there any sort of geographical preference? A lot of OOSers or mainly in-state californians?

Anyway, my hopes are pretty down about now. They do accept about ~170 most years, and I seriously can't imagine there will be absolutely no movement in the waitlist. I got the sense that Stanford did have an Ivy/Top 25 preference. And, although I went to a Top 10 LAC and I talked a bit with Greg Vaughn about how much he liked my college, I did get the sense that I don't have the same stret cred as a Harvard undergrad. As of this point, Dean Garcia can see every medical school I was accepted at (and you too!), and I know Stanford has a preference to steal top applicants away from other top programs. I feel like he might rather accept a student already enrolled at say, UChicago, Penn, WashU...then sort of middle of the road me.

I just created a super secret Stanford Med Waitlisted Class of 2014 facebook group if anyone would like to join. PM me for an invite with something I can use to find you. At this point, I'm just happy to have gotten the opportunity to interview. 🙂

FWIW, Arturo went to UC Irvine (like me) and he was all "man, I almost NEVER see anyone interview from UCI." He went on to explain how he thought they accepted one student from UCI two years ago and one student the year before that.

Again, I thought there was a sort of Ivy-League/Top 25 preference. One of my student hosts even said (jokingly), "Stanford doesn't accept students from small liberal arts colleges"...when I told her what college I attended.

Hey so i wasn't able to make it to second look but wanted to throw in my info to add to the count. I am 99% percent sure I'll not be attending and i really hope it goes to some of you waitlisters that are convinced stanford is the place for you! Good luck with that.

In terms of the ivy thing...looking at the facebook group stanford, harvard, yale undergrads abound. That being said I went to UC Santa Cruz a school most people outside of california have never heard of and there were definitely a handful of students from small colleges that have been accepted. Maybe they prefer students from the ivies but i think once you make it to the interview they don't really look at that anymore? idaknow

Best of luck everyone:laugh:

So I was browsing previous year's Stanford forums and I found the following links:

http://med.stanford.edu/irt/development/mesa.html
http://med.stanford.edu/irt/development/mesa_ss3.html
http://med.stanford.edu/irt/development/mesa_ss1.html

They are basically a guide to how Stanford ranks us internally as applicants. None of the links above work, but I used the Internet Archive to look at them:

http://web.archive.org/web/20070610101909/http://med.stanford.edu/irt/development/mesa.html
http://web.archive.org/web/20070710195326/http://med.stanford.edu/irt/development/mesa_ss3.html
http://web.archive.org/web/20070710195305/http://med.stanford.edu/irt/development/mesa_ss1.html

They don't really offer any insight into potential waitlist movement, but maybe they'll help next year's applicants fair better in this process.

You are a great human being. 😀

Stop worrying, people. There's nothing we can do. Our fate is in the hands of Limbo, the God of Waitlist Movement.

it's not so much worrying..this is more of a way to vent frustrations 🙂

Or really, just consume time in limbo.

I'm actually gonna make a concerted effort to post here less (hehe, I say that now...)...which is gonna be made easy because of how busy I am in lab right now.

I can't resist coming here because of the tidbits of information that you guys provide. Like a few days ago someone posted that 72 people had gone to second look, and then yesterday dreampryncezz posted that 130-140 people were accepted. Maybe I'm driving myself crazy with these snippets of knowledge, but, as wolfiemd said, I can vent on here too.

yeah, especially when no one in real life knows anything about the process (apart from other friends applying)

True. It's definitely a nice escape from the public. My parents are both non-medical people and have absolutely no idea how anything works. Talking to them about it is exhausting lol.

Agreed on all counts.

For quality of life, Stanford is unmatched- just take a look at the weather!

While the patient population won't be as diverse as your larger urban centers (fewer trauma cases too), you do get interesting cases as Stanford Hospital is the tertiary care center in the area, and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where many clerkships are complete, offers quite a variety of patients in the San Jose area.

Stanford is probably the most flexible medical school out there. All lectures are recorded, and they really push their students to do other things, be it research, taking other classes, etc.

One under-discussed part of their program is their advising system. There are four academic advisors for each class, and groups of five/six students each get a Educators for Care (E4C) advisor who serves as a teacher of clinical skills and mentor. Just one of the many benefits of having such a small class.

Agreed. It's especially good to talk to applicants who have worked hard enough to get interviewed at Stanford. As I mentioned above, I don't know anyone from UCI to interview at Stanford, or Harvard for that matter, and it's good to know that people from other 'lesser-ranked' undergrads are fighting the same uphill battle.

That's surprising. I always thought UC-Irvine was pretty strong in the sciences/pre-med.

My undergrad is somewhat lesser known but I still think we're pretty awesome usually at med school admissions. Of my friends who applied last year (that I know), they ended up at the schools below. And...we usually only have about 25 students apply annually, so that's a big chunk of them. To all you other small LACers out there...represent.

1 Columbia
1 Harvard
1 Hopkins
1 Penn
2 Mount Sinai
1 Cornell
2 UCSF
2 UMDNJ-RWJ
1 University of Rochester
3 Jefferson
2 U of Maryland
1 UNC
2 Temple
2 Drexel

I consider myself a LACer, but it's an Ivy....so it doesn't count? 🙁

Dartmouth? Brown? Those are the closest I can think of. My graduating class had 310 students in it. Now that's small.

dartmouth...where the men are men and the women are too.

Haha that's awesome. I can't comment cause I've never actually visited. Is Dartmouth full of female jocks? Or lesbians? There was a Dartmouth student who interviewed with me actually.

nah they just hold their liquor well. and can beat us up. :scared: . but long story short, we have to field teams that compete against larger schools since we're D1, but since our classes are much smaller, proportionally there are many more athletes.

310? thats amazing. I'm sure some kids have had lectures that big. my class was ~1100 and I felt I knew or had met pretty much everyone.

Yeah, it gets small but you still love it. My largest class ever was maybe 85 students: Bio 101. And even then, my professor baked me cookies when she found out my grandmother had died. She was such a sweetheart. Kind of why I liked Stanford so much, I'm used to the intimate atmosphere.

thats awesome...the cookie part...you know what I mean.

yeah, I also liked the small class size. And then I found out Dartmouth and Stanford have basically the same logo and that they also had the same ridiculously inappropriate mascot until the 70s too! and now the mascots are both just colors too! small world! le sigh....

Aww Stanford love. Regardless of what happens (even if I'm rejected), I really do genuinely hope someone who posts on this thread gets in.

Ooo...and PM me if any you all want to join my secret waitlisted students facebook group.

yeah you guys are hilarious i hope we get to be classmates

maybe we can go on the maury povich show and tell our story

please. we'd be way too classy for maury povich. i'm thinking tyra.

We should've held a rally @ Stanford on the same days as the Admit weekend. That would've been hilarious.

Have signs that read "Hey Stanford is great but why don't u go to Harvard or sumthing"

LOL, yeah we could've put subliminal messages all around campus the night before. "Pssst....be sure to drive by UCSF on your way home." "The floor of this building is marble...just like HMS."

Always classy. always.

BTW. Facebook group if you'd like to join. Search Facebook for Stanford Med Waitlisted Class of 2014. I'll let you in.
