How long does it take to fill the vacc forms? My insurance will be instituted beg May and I'm going to send it in asap, along w/ CPR stuff.

Can you be accepted w/ the vacc forms but not the CPR? Is the CPR renewable if you do it now and defer?

Speaking of CPR stuff--wait what are you guys talking about? You have to get certified in CPR before you matriculate or something? Because it's unlikely I'll have time to do that before school starts (I'm defending my thesis like a week before school starts).

For reference I'm on the hold for spring list. I'm not going to fulfill a requirement to a school that hasn't even accepted me yet.

I thought CPR certification is required for all SUNY's before matriculation..
I'm sure there are a lot of one-day courses available 🙂

You do need to be certified. You will be working in a massive hospital and you need to know what to do if someone codes in front of you.

anyone from 3/10 interview or around there hear anything yet?

Some schools will have you get CPR certified after school starts, probably within the first week of school.

SUNY Downstate requires CPR for Health care Providers thru AHA by August 3rd. SUNY Buffalo for example requires it by August but is less picky on how you fulfill it (you can take a laypersons CPR and it doesn't have to be through the AHA). I don't remember if SUNY Upstate and Stonybrook also required it by August.

But it doesn't hurt to take it now even if you haven't been accepted, and the class is only about 4 hrs of your time.

Dont forget the cheesy video!

I sent in my application and deposit for the dorms a week ago. When do they get back to you to confirm that you got housing - and which type of room you got? What type of room is more commonly requested? I basically listed my room preference in order of 1 double 2 double studio 3 single 4 single studio, I would prefer not to go back to sharing a single bedroom because I did that in college and am over it, but I want to save $.

not sure but i was wondering the same thing. i think i will send them an email right now 😀

When are they pulling people from the hold list?

from looking at last years thread, it looks like both people on the alternate list and the hold list got accepted right after may 15th, then movement continued well into june. i'm keeping my fingers crossed for both of us!

Just withdrew my acceptance here. Good luck to everyone!

"On hold for Spring consideration." Just got the snail mail letter.

did they give you the health forms? With these on hold letters as well does the admissions committee reconvene and then make decisions?

I didn't get health forms. The letter states that they will re-review my file again before making a decision.

I interviewed at the beginning of March and just got my rejection letter. I thought my interview went pretty well, so I don't really know what happened. Oh well!

The same thing happened to me a few years ago. I think they have very, very few slots left at this point so they're just rejecting people that they'd normally put on the "spring consideration list".

I am placed directly on the alternate list (haven't been 'on hold for spring consideration'). Letter came with health forms earlier this week. Interviewed mid March. No change on my online checklist so far.

Which date did you interview? I was March 17th, curious to see if theyve gotten up to that date yet :xf:

Hey guys, I'm a first year student at Downstate, this is a message for anyone that is interested in living within walking distance of the school but not in the dorms, I'm currently looking for 1 or more roommates.
I currently have a sweet studio apt in the dorms, however, it's really expensive ($1400/month), so I'm looking to move to an apt building in the area because rent is a lot more affordable and there are plenty of real estate options. For example, a 3 bedroom apt 2 blocks away from the school (and really close to the subway) is about $1800 and a 2BR is $1300.
Please PM me if interested.

Also, I'm pretty sure that whoever is the admin for the COM 2014 Facebook group is also on SDN, so I would like to ask that you let me into the FB group bc I requested to join 2 weeks ago. I know it's COM 2014, but the senior students in the school might want to communicate with the incoming class, so please don't restrict us.

OMG, seriously? So that's basically waitlist. Do you know about chances of getting in off that?

After researching the thread from last year and speaking with the adcom:

The hold list will start to move around June/July. You can be accepted, rejected or be thrown on the alternate list.

The alternate list is the "wait list".

I think your odds are better if you were placed on the alternate list. Sorry for the crummy news.

I have heard that many people from the current class were accepted from the hold list. Albeit, very late in the season.

So....it could be worse....it could be better....keep your fingers crossed! :xf:

I'm likely to drop my "Alt" position, so hopefully that speeds things up for those still waiting.

Just withdrew my acceptance. Hopefully that will take someone out of the waiting list. Good luck to you all. Downstate is an awesome school 🙂

wait im confused. so we HAVE to do it through AHA? and what course do we have to take? does it HAVE to be for health care professionals? or can it be a CPR only course? there are so many different courses to choose from that AHA offers 😵

Interview 3/17-- hold for spring consideration! *at least its not a rejection yet* :luck:

Any current Downstate students ( especially out of state) have anything to say about their experience at downstate? I am choosing where to go and am having a very hard time with the decision since I did not spend much time at the school or in NY... thanks so much!

did you have a change on ur online status page?

does hold for spring consideration (rlly summer i feel by now rite?) come with health forms?

It did not come with health forms-- and I received notification by snail mail! Good luck to those who havent heard back yet :xf:

So I am in-state, but I'll throw in my 2 cents.

DS wasnt even on my original list of schools. I added it as my 25th application and it ended up being the only school I got into. Honestly, I was a little apprehensive about coming here at first. It is a bit rough around the edges. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised by how well I fit in here. This is a school which does not have all the amenities of a private school, but I actually like that better. It sort of teaches you to work with what you have. This may sound a bit discouraging, but I promise it's a great learning experience.

The first 2 years here are average. I have my complaints and my favorite parts of first year, but looking back I feel really well prepared and I know a ton more than I ever thought I could know. The anatomy lab is brand new and is pristine. Plasma screens everywhere. The student to body ratio is 8:1 in groups of 4 (this is a good ratio trust me you dont want less).

DS is known for their second two years. We provide a clinical experience on par with top tier schools. We're in a bad neighborhood, so you'll see things here that will teach you incredible amounts. People get attacked, they let diseases grow out of control b/c they cant afford primary care, and all of it comes to kings county hospital. There is plenty of opportunity to get clinical experience outside of class in your first 2 years. They are also very good about helping you choose a direction in terms of specialty, through mentors, shadowing, specialty fairs, and so on.

The dorms are crappy, I'll say it up front. But we learn to live with them and then many people move out. I'm staying in them primarily cos I need to be close to class or else I wont go.

The class is pretty close knit. We all suffer together and we all help each other. Example: last week, we all arranged to sing to our musical-loving classmate on her birthday. All the boys she knew surprised her with flowers and sang "Your Song" from Moulin Rouge.

Overall, I am very happy with my experience here so far. I feel that I have been taught well, and am being advised well. I want to go into Emergency Medicine, so they have set me up with a mentor who is the residency director here, plus another attending to shadow. I think most people end up really enjoying it here.

All the best to you in the app cycle!

To answer all your questions: Yes. BLS for Health Care Professionals. Yes. No.

And trust me on this. I tried to get them to accept my class through the Red Cross, I even faxed over the entire class manual with an explanation that there were no more open courses in my area through the AHA (which is true if you are in Boston), only to get a call from someone saying I had to take it through AHA by the deadline and there are no exceptions and that it was my fault for taking it through the ARC because the instructions are clearly outlined both on the website and in one of the letters they sent me.

Can you elaborate on this?

Well we are not affiliated with an undergrad, so we don't have a traditional campus. Other schools may have monstrous athletic facilities and such. We have our student center, the dorms, and the hospital. That's the extent of our campus. It's not new and it's not pristine, but it gets the job done and, coming from a private undergrad with all sorts of buildings and high funding for clubs and such, I still didn't mind the transition too much.

So the biggest concerns are that the dorms are a little crappy and that the gym is small? I think I can live with that.

I thought Downstate had a good number of clubs, not as many as some of the other med schools I looked at but a fair share.

There's a good number of clubs here to represent most interests...and if yours isn't represented you can always start a club.

I started the weekly wiffleball club with few problems. I also joined the acapella group as the beatboxer...so theres time for extracurriculars and plenty of clubs to join.

I also forgot to mention the match list in my first post. This year had an unbelievable match list. Ivy's all over and some amazing hospitals that are non ivy as well. This is another reason I'm happy to be here...we tend to get people into fantastic residencies.
