Hey! Def. a generic number, I e-mailed Mr. Rosso and he told me 25% chance also "right up until August 9th".....That is pretty good chances though, I'm excited about it! 🙂 (plus, his numbers are low-ball estimates so that people don't get mad when they don't get in......if he told the middle 50% and they're all going to actually get offers, our chances are probably higher than 25%.) Good luck! Hopefully they get to us soon!

Just wanted to add that this is definitely a very general estimate because it would be terrible to give people false hope if things don't pan out well for the WL. He said 70% to me for those in the top 1/3, and I got in soon after. It looks like the trends we saw in previous years are holding true for this year as well since the WL is about to go into the bottom 1/3. Good luck to everyone 👍

Yay! I'm so excited about how close we are to the bottom! I hope nss gets in this week, that gives us an awesome chance in the bottom 1/3! Hopefully Mr. Rosso will be e-mailing us for our phone numbers soon!

Why does Buffalo accept so many people off the waitlist? I thought it is supposed to be the best state school in NY state.

This year was a big year for movement because of the huge increase in applications to UB. They were one of only a few schools to increase their applications by over 500 this year, to more than 4300 applicants. So, by increasing applications, they also increase the "quality" of their applicants, meaning that a good portion of those they had initially accepted were also applying to other "higher quality" private schools. The first 140 people accepted had an average cGPA of close to 3.9 and an average MCAT of almost 35! So, I take this to mean that many of these applicants also had acceptances/waitlists at other (private or state) schools which they preferred over UB because they were better "qualified". Even though UB isn't overly obsessed with GPA or MCATs, many other schools are.

Also, we don't really know how many people were on the waitlist once it was completed. We do know that 140 people were accepted as of April 29th and obviously a good amount of those people decided to drop UB by May 15th. I really think too that a lot of those accepted off of the waitlist after May 15th, and especially recently, have another acceptance and everything lined up to attend that other school, so switching everything over to UB is more of a hassle than they may think it is worth.

I think the main reason why UB accepts so many off the waitlist is because UB accepts so few people outright - the school accepts people to fill the 130 odd spots exactly by the end of the interview season, and doesn't overaccept to compensate for the people that are bound to withdraw their acceptance. As people withdraw, people are accepted off the waitlist to fill these positions.

Disclaimer: I'm not sure how much misinformation I'm going to give with this post.

Basically it's become known over the past years that UB is trying to become one of the "best" medical schools in the country (although I haven't started, I personally already think it's one of the best). So it's been rumored that they're trying to admit students with higher GPAs and MCAT scores.

I know there will be a lot of skeptics out there, but if any SUNY school can do it, it's UB. They have this extremely ambitious plan to build a new medical campus (including dorms) down town near Roswell Park and Buffalo General. This would put the medical school in prime position for both clinical and research. And it would give UB one thing it is severely lacking: a real medical community. If there was any reason I would go to another medical school above UB, it would be the fact that it's so decentralized. The dorms and housing are on north campus, the medical school is on south campus, and the clinical sites and research sites are all over the place. That project will put every one of those elements all within 4-5 blocks.

And UB is very serious about it. They're already building down town (most notably the heart center) and have moved many of their offices down here. They recently bought a few blocks of low income housing which will eventually be the site of the campus. They apparently have something like half a billion dollars saved for it, but it's not enough for the whole project so they're waiting for the state to give a good chunk of cash for the project. I guess that will really depend on how good the economy does over the next 5-10 years.

I totally agree! Being from Buffalo and planning to stay in Buffalo for residency (and pretty much forever, lol), I'm really excited about the downtown medical campus, not only for the future of the medical school, but the future of medicine in general for doctors and researchers in the area.

I do agree that they're trying to up their GPA and MCAT numbers. Actually, Dr. Severin (the 3 times I've heard him speak besides my interview day) has brought up the fact that when he started as dean of admissions the average GPA and MCAT were much lower than they are now. So, you can certainly tell he's proud of that and is working to continually improve it. But, I was just pointing out that they don't use computerized systems or standard numbers which they will not go below to sift through applications (2 admissions committee members have to read through, in its entirety, every application that is rejected), and that a jump from just over 30 being the average to 35 would be crazy in 1 year! 🙂 I'm sure the GPA and MCAT will both be up this year though....we'll just have to see to what on the day classes start! 🙂

tennistycoon-I only applied to UB and LECOM. I did get into LECOM, but I rejected their acceptance because they start 2 weeks before UB starts and I've heard of a lot of people from the Buffalo area who went to LECOM and then get a call from UB a few days before classes started at UB, so they couldn't drop LECOM and switch. UB has been my dream since I was in middle school, lol cheesy I know. But, I have 2 kids now (the first wasn't obviously planned, as I was a senior in HS), so although my fiance would be willing to move where ever I might need to go, I really can't do it without my family. So, I figured why bother wasting the money and time to go to interviews all over when I know I don't want to go anywhere but UB. I've certainly done almost everything I can over the last 5 years to focus on what UB is looking for in a student and really tried to get to know the school as a whole, besides just going there for undergrad. But, if I don't get off the waitlist this year, I'm going to re-apply to both UB & LECOM again next year, but I won't turn down LECOM if I get waitlisted at UB again. I don't think taking a year off, especially with a 5 and 1 year old would hurt me too badly in the scheme of things. At least I'd get to spend time with them and maybe get some more research under my belt.

Thanks tennistycoon! No, I actually graduated HS 1/2 a year early, in January and started college the following week. It did take me 5 and a half years to finish my bachelor's, but it was because I had to work full time the first year and a half while my boyfriend (fiance now) finished school. So, I only took 12 credits a semester, and mostly online until he was done. That way I could wait to take the harder classes until I didn't have to work as much and he could pretty much support us alone. Also, I added 2 minors to my major, so that added some classes too. Glad everything has turned out the way it has though, for sure 🙂

I was just going to give the same update! I e-mailed Mr. Rosso about 30 minutes ago and that was his response. Still in the middle 1/3 and nothing since the 8th. Depressing. Hopefully someone doesn't show up on the first day and they call me b/c I can be there in 15 minutes! 🙂

I hope page 9 brings renewed hope and more waitlist movement!! After taking a quick glance at other WLs, most seem to have slowed down also, which I'm sure doesn't help UB's WL movement.
