For the to-from dates for course work, are we putting the dates we took the class like 01/2007 to 05/2007 or are we putting the time we were at that specific institution like 08/2006 to 05/2010

Also does anyone know if they take the biochem substitution for orgo 2?

haha . . . ok Red, I called the Vanderbilt office to find out about this, you call Iowa!! and let me know. 😀

Haha. I'm so glad we're in this together. I have a list from my school that tells which schools have historically accepted biochem and Iowa is listed as a yes, but the list hasn't been updated since like 2005 and I couldn't find anything specific on their website.
I'll try to give them a call tomorrow if I can or shoot them an email.

Yeah, you know, it really seems schools should start leaning towards accepting or even requiring it . . . I think biochem is way more valuable than Orgo 2. It definitely appeared to help me rather than hurt me on the MCAT, I dont know your exact BS score but I bet i'm guessing you did well too. plus biochem is more relevant to medical school than Orgo 2 is anyway.

I did pretty well on BS. I would have been completely screwed if it weren't for biochem and even so, I was in the middle of taking it when I took the MCAT.
At UIUC the bio majors are required to take Orgo 1 + Biochem instead of Orgo 2. Alot of premeds take both, but they're pretty much the same class from a slightly different perspective, at least at UIUC.

Does anyone know what types of courses are acceptable for the 4 classes required for humanities, social and behavioral sciences? For example, would music theory courses or music performance courses count as humanities? I know there are some restrictions for the college of engineering (different, I know).🙄

Thanks!

I have everything submitted except for the optional additional information and my final transcript (the one I send in if I enroll) and Carver has listed that they have received and excepted everything else, but it says my file is incomplete. Is this just because of the optional part and final transcript? Anyone else having this problem?

Mine still says that and I received a you are complete email from the school. No worries.

Yeah, they don't always update the status page, even if you are complete in their system. I know I had a similar situation with Pitt, where I was complete in their system but it didn't show on the status page for a few days.

I've submitted 4 letters, and they downloaded only 2. What's going on with the other 2?

This is what they said:
"We don't normally accept Biochemistry as the second semester of Organic Chemistry. However, we have made exceptions for certain schools. If you tell me where you completed the courses, I can tell you whether or not it is acceptable."

So it looks like you may have to get in touch with them to find out if your school's biochem works or not. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Excellent . . . well my biochem course was a graduate course @ a med school so if they don't take it, i don't know what they will take . . . i should also mention that, if forced to take orgo 2, i'll be taking it at the cheapest community college in the state . . . 🙂

I hope they take it.

the font on their secondary is going to make me go blind 😡

"please give us a chronological account of your major activities (including summer activities) for the 3 years immediately preceding your proposed entry to the College of Medicine.(We are only interested in activities such as school, summer job, etc, not the activities listed on your AMCAS application.)"

Do we include volunteering?

god you scared me to death! I was like "I don't remember that question!" but its for Iowa residents so it's all good. now my pulse can go back to normal

does anyone know what iowa city is like? i see it only has a population of 67,000.

I just spent the summer in IC doing research, and it's a nice place. Lots of stuff to do, big 10 football, very active downtown nightlife, theater and concerts, very easy to get around with public transportation and Cambus for free. I give it 👍👍

They've had some problems recently with crime downtown, but it mostly happens to drunk people walking home alone, which is never a good idea anyway. 🙄

So I am just working through the secondary now, and I have a question about medical related experiences.

I worked as a Physical Therapy Technician for a year. The whole job involved patient contact and running patients through exercises etc.. Would you guys consider this medically related?

Also, I am currently working at the Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota. Its a lot of lab work, but I also work on some human studies that involve patient intakes, blood drawing and administrating drugs etc.. Would this be considered medically related?

Thanks

are they related to medicine? if so then yes

I do have a question for essay #3 too. The question asks to give a brief description. But 3000 characters calls for a lot of writing. Do you guys just describe it or also write things like what you learned, etc.? I don't have much medical experiences. And I don't know if I should write crap to take up all 3000 characters or just give a brief description as asked.

I think I used most of the characters, but that's because I had like 5 or 6 experiences to write. I was pretty brief, though. In word, I think each took up about four lines, maybe. Shorter for short (day, week) experiences, more for longer (year, summer) experiences.

I put: Location. Title. Date. Briefly what I did (1-3 sentences).

Per the secondary website, "the admissions committee will not be reviewing files until september." Also, interviews are held from september to late january for md only, and early december to late january for mstp.

apparently some md-only peeps will have a short notice for their interviews.

What the heck does "sem" stand for when filling out the hours part of course work. I assumed it meant semester but theres no way it can mean that because you can go all the way to 15 sem or 22.5 quarters for one class. Does "sem" mean credit hours or how does this math work? So a 5 credit physics class is 5 sem or 7.5 quarters or does it really mean semester in which case just 1 sem or 1.5 quarters?😕

did any other minorities get an email from this school yesterday? also...anyone here from iowa?? whats this place like?

I got this e-mail and called them to ask how they selected who to send the e-mail. They said that they sent it out to URMs with MCAT scores at or above 8 in each section. I think she mentioned that there were other things that they looked at too.

an 8 +? that means the minimum was like a 24....thats not very telling of how good the school is....

whats iowa like? i only recently found out where it is

Hey guys, I'm a student here at the University of Iowa, and I'm also applying this cycle.

Iowa City does not have the largest population, but it doesn't feel like a small and dinky town. Because it hosts a college campus, there are many cultural events and big-name artists that come in to perform. In fact, in a couple of weeks, Lupe Fiasco is dropping by to give a free concert to all UI students.

The medical campus is pretty, but there is still some construction going on around here. There's a big downtown bar scene, and at night, the middle of the city is always packed.

You will find some undergrads annoying (drunk and drunk) at times, but the opportunities here are pretty abundant, and life is not boring as small-town Iowa would seem to portray.

Feel free to ask me any questions, Carver is very high on my list, as I've had a good time in Iowa City for the past few years.

Pros: -bustling nightlife
-medical campus is cutting edge
-lots of cultural and musical events

Cons: -bustling nightlife
-quiet in the summers (a pro for some)
-winter snow and ice/ summer humidity can get annoying (I don't mind it, but some people I know don't care for it)

Thanks - sounds like it has some of the benefits of a big city without a lot of the drawbacks. I am really interested in this school.

For the URMs who recently received the email from the diversity coordinator, did any of you send a primary to UI? And if so, have you received a secondary? Just wondering...

I received the e-mail prior to sending a primary. I did subsequently submit a primary and received the secondary about 4 days later. They do screen for secondaries, however, my primary was submitted on a Friday, I called and they said that they only upload primaries once a week, usually Mondays or Tuesdays. So on Tuesday was when I received my secondary. Hope this helps.

It seems Iowa is a little slower to send out interview invites than some other schools, like Ohio State. However, I am hopeful 🙂

According to the lady I spoke with, they're not even going to start reviewing apps until September.

I'm wondering the same. apparently its a state in the midwest. I just googled it. Only a couple of people live there, but its farms are important for our economy, however. Anyone been there? 😛

 I've lived my whole life in Iowa... I think it's a pretty decent place. Iowa City is not like the majority of Iowa, however, in that there are things to do.

I visited there before for a friends wedding. It is a pretty cool little city. If you are looking for some where like NYC for medical school it isn't going to be for you, but if you want a smaller city with affordable living it is great. It has most of the amenities you might be looking for, unless you want lots of night clubs and a huge city.

Lol. I had a buddy whose dad went to Carver and said the city was a blast even back in the day. Good school too. I'm thinking about applying. How are they for OOS?

they are very friendly to OOS students,, especially for a public school. About 1/3 of the matriculating class was OOS.

Hey guys, I've just started medical school at Iowa and I would be happy to help with questions about the school, interview, etc... If you have any questions dont hesitate to message me.

just checking in on this thread 🙂. does anyone have any interview invites or any new info?

Nope - other than the complete e-mail a couple weeks ago, everything has been silent. I guess they aren't quite as rolling as most other schools.

Haven't heard anything... patiently waiting for an interview invite, I'm in-state and I'm hoping to get it done in September. :xf:

Interview Invite! I chose 9/14, which is ridiculously soon. But hey, I want to hear back as soon as possible and I'm as ready now as I'll ever be. Good luck to all other applicants at Iowa!

Congrats!! Let the games begin! lol

They had quite a few dates to choose from. To be honest, I didn't look closely at all of them, because I wanted to be towards the beginning. I know 9/18 was the next option after 9/14.

Interview invite, also interviewing 9/14. Think we can get a med student to stay with, with that little advance notice? Otherwise I'll just drive the morning of, the interview isn't until 10:30 a.m. and I'm a 2 hour drive away. 🙂
