Interviewed today (11/13/09), very low stress, the staffs and the students were really friendly, the interviewers tried everything to make me feel comfortable and relex during the process (offer me water, explain the process and address that they will take notes when I'm answering, smile and nod to me)

Facilities are great, modern, high-tech, and high transparency (80% glass walls)

Overall, it was a great experience

This school is definitely a reach for me, but I'm coming up on 2 months now since being complete without hearing a chirp. Have rejections been sent out at all or am I doomed to wait until next May to get a small envelope in the mail?

Sounds like my interviewers!!! They were both really nice and I was def. nervous about how they would be during the "structured" portion but it was nothing like others had described previously. They didn't just stare at me with stone faces 😱

I agree I really love the school and hope I don't have to wait until March!!!

I get the impression that they haven't really been handing out rejections...or if they have people haven't been coming on here posting about it. Another school that I'm really interested in is like that, I guess they want to keep their options open but it def. sucks for us applicants who get strung along the ENTIRE season. But my guess is since it's later in the season it could take considerably longer to hear back from them with an interview invite. So...keep hope alive!!! The good thing is unlike other schools it's not like you're at a HUGE disadvantage if you do happen to interview later in the season since they accept many people in the final pool.

join the club. i've been complete for nearly 4 months!

they did say that half the commitee evaluates IS and half evaluates OOS. Seeing as they interview/accept twice as many IS people that half of the commitee may be more backed up than the OOS half. I have given this too much thought I think.

My MSAR book said that last year Iowa interviewed 260 IS and accepted 99 while 419 OOS interviewed and accepted 49.
I bet the reasons they accept more OOS first are 1. OOS applicants have higher stats (otherwise they wouldn't have received an interview) 2. By accepting an OOS applicant with high stats early you don't run the risk of using a spot on a less qualified applicant (say someone with more average stats) in favor of a later one with higher stats and 3. An OOS applicant with high stats is likely to get accepted at numerous schools which explains why we see so many OOS accepted on here (they have lots of options and can turn down schools, this one included, in favor of other schools) which of course leads to a lower % of them actually matriculating.
That being said, what do I know. I mean Iowa does its best to keep us in the dark on this process

I believe 129 IS were accepted, and 99 matriculated. I'm not sure of the stats for OOS. Those numbers are a bit more promising (50% acceptance rate for IS after interviewing). Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Oh right, I forgot the MSAR lists the numbers for matriculated not accepted.

I just got an acceptance email! I'm so excited, my very first!

Looks like they're just starting to get around to IS acceptances. Finally 😕. Congrats to all my fellow hawks out there 😍.

Just got the acceptance email tonight! I was on the T coming home when I got the email! Such a shock! I totally thought i was going to have to wait until March.

Interviewed early September, IS

Has any interviewee used the "student club/fraternity" housing? The name of the club escapes me right now, but if you have how was it? Do you share a bunk? How many per room? How's the restroom etc?

I'm deciding b/t that and hotels, I've shelled a lot of dough on flights so I wanna save a little on accommodation.

thanks,

Hi everyone, I recently attended the interview and I want to send a thank you note. Dose anyone know who should I send to? The interviewer directly or the admission office?

I remember the admission office staff there gave me a business card at the end of the day and said: "Just in case you want to send a thank you note." So should I just send the thank you note to the address on the business card?

thanks,

I stayed at the Frat house. It's legit, especially at $10 a night. It kinda like staying at a student host, but you get your own fully furnished room and you are able to interact with ~10 med students. You have to share a bathroom, so bring some flip-flops. If you have questions calla Mara she is really helpful.

  • AKK Fraternity, 515-290-4521, Mara Determan, 339 Teeters Court, Iowa City, IA, $20.00 for first night, $10.00 each additional night. Breakfast and dinner included, a current resident of the house will take applicant to MERF.

Have any OOS'ers that interviewed 11/2 or later gotten any news since their interview? That's when I interviewed... and I'm getting a little anxious but by the looks of news on here it sounds like I should just hold my breath for a while longer. I can't remember what they told us, but how often are they reviewing files and sending out notifications? Is it like the end of the month or continually?

I hope the ad com is meeting today! But I don't have too high of hopes... o.o

They are supposed to be meeting every Tuesday. I am oos and interviewed a week or two before you...in order to rule out weekly disappointment lol I'm just set on hearing by the final applicant pool and I will consider any decision before that as a surprise (hopefully a good surprise)

That's how I feel, but I'm sure it won't stop me from checking my email every few hours on Tuesdays!

Plus, the UofI is on Thanksgiving break right now, and the ad com does include faculty members...

Boo ya. I just received an acceptance e-mail sent ten minutes ago!

Apparently adcoms don't get holidays...lol

I just got an acceptance email at 3:30 pm (my first one!!!) and I interviewed on 10/30. I am OOS. 🙂

hey all - I also just got an acceptance. I interviewed 10/5 so I thought I for sure was going to have to wait until March, but am extremely excited! Good luck to all and just realize you may have to wait close to 2 months before you hear.

Invited via email to submit my AMCAS primary to this school after the application deadline and given secondary the same day after talking to admission office. Secondary in 10 days later.

Hadn't really considered this school when I started but after checking into them I'm very interested. I'm interested in mainly clinical work and being in the midwest and so this has quickly become one of my top schools. Hoping to get an interview!

currently work in a top children's hospital as a perfusion tech, lots of meaningful ICU and OR time (3 years experience)

Good for you! I wasn't really considering this school either (because I didn't know anything about it and am OOS) until a friend suggested I apply. I had mostly forgotten I submitted my primary here because they screen for secondaries. Although I submitted AMCAS in early June I didn't hear from Iowa until a few days after my MCAT scores were released in September. Anyways, in researching the school I got extremely interested in lots of the programs that they have. The interview was no disappointment either...facilities are awesome, everyone at the school was really friendly and welcoming, lots of great opportunities for research and the different distinction tracks. 👍

A lot of people don't know how great of a school Iowa really is. I am from Iowa and I didn't until I dd some research as well. For anyone who is into rankings Iowa was 10th in primary care rank and 31 for research. ( US news and world report). That puts it ahead of some big name schools like Dartmouth, Brown and a lot of others. The programs and facilities are sweet too. I feel really lucky to have gotten in. Just food for thought. Good luck everyone!!

Yeah it really is a great school!!! Congrats to you! I feel fortunate that I had the opportunity to interview here, I really loved it...hopefully I will hear good news soon. :xf:

Definitely true, Iowa flies under the public radar as far as being a medical research powerhouse, but at my WashU interview a 4th year medical student mentioned how pumped she was for her upcoming interview for a urology residency position at Iowa. There are quite a few specialties and research areas that Iowa does very, very well. 👍

Very true. One of my mentors has commented repeatedly on how Iowa is a "sleeper" school in terms of research in that you might not understand how great Iowa truly is unless you're very familiar with a particular field. One great example is cystic fibrosis modeling in pigs. With four HHMI researchers as well as many other individuals who are very much respected in their fields, many fantastic opportunities exist at Carver.

I just got accepted about 50 minutes ago! I am super excited, this was my first!

I'm OOS and I interviewed on 10/23 for those who care.

Thanks man. Its weird that we interviewed the same day AND had the same interviewers, and yet we were accepted like two weeks apart from each other.

Does anyone know if Iowa is still giving out interview invites? Or is it pretty much over? I know they only go through January, right?

yah they only go through january according to their site. I certainly could be wrong but i would say its a poor outlook for all of us w/o invites. I really wanted to check out iowa a lot sadly. Im assuming rejection at this point.

....I was kind of hoping yesterday I would hear something (interviewed 11/2)..... one more week i guess (hopefully!!!). I'm keeping my fingers crossed, I loved this school!!!

It is weird. I guess it goes to show that this process will never be understood...

Iowa tends to review and rereview applicants before the final pool. There is really no predicting when you'll hear.

I just wanted to give some quick advice that I think everyone interviewing at iowa (or elsewhere for that matter) should listen to. Apparently, according to one of my professors on the ad com, a student interviewed who had great grades, mcats, experiences and seemed like a shoe-in at Iowa. During his interview he said one sentance that got the whole adcom riled up and was the sole reason he was not admitted: he said one sentance about how medicine is a stable job that pays well for those who put in the work. This was enough to get him rejected by a large margin. My professor didn't agree with his colleagues knowing that everyone cares about job stability and getting reimbursed for efforts. Anyway, as dumb as this is, do NOT mention anything about stability or good future job or anything along those lines as it could be the sole thing that gets you rejected from medical schools.

that's pretty crazy but maybe they figured he knew nothing about the field since right health care is changing so much and who knows what money is going to be like after reforms. He also may have come across like he was in it for the wrong reasons (aka money)

I understand what you mean. The applicant had it nowhere on his application and only mentioned it in one sentence during the interview so he didn't make it sound like he was doing it for the money.
