there was a clarification email sent out

"I am writing with clarification.

First, no TMDSAS participating medical school is aware of any applicant's rank
list.

Second, admissions decisions at UT Southwestern and the TMDSAS participating
schools are independent of the applicant's school rankings because the schools
have no knowledge of the applicants' ranking. Your ranking of the medical schools
is not a part of our admissions decision process (we don't even, and can't even
know what it is).

Rank schools in the order in which you would prefer to attend them. If UT Southwestern
is your preferred school, rank us #1. If UT Southwestern is your second choice,
rank us #2., etc. . The only way your ranking of UT Southwestern will affect
your status here is if you match to a school you prefer over UT Southwestern,
then your application will be withdrawn here as a function of the match process."

When they say " If you do not put UT Southwestern first on your list, you take the risk of getting "knocked off" our alternate list. "

what does that mean?

If anyone understands this statement please let me know thanks

Okay, think of it this way, as an example:

You rank three schools in the following order, thinking because of hypothetical seats open, you have the best shot of getting in at Tech but really, in your heart, UTSW is #1:
1) Tech
2) A&M
3) UTSW

You get into A&M. Only schools you ranked higher than A&M can place you on an alternative list.

As such, you now are not eligible to be on UTSW alternative list because you ranked it lower than the school you ended up being Feb1 matched to.

If you had ranked it
1) UTSW
2) A&M
3) Tech

And still gotten into A&M, you are still eligible to be on UTSW's alternative list because you ranked it higher than A&M. You are NOT eligible for Tech's because you ranked it lower.

Make sense? 🙂 Hope that helps!

In other news... Is it Feb 1 yet? Please??? 😱 haha

Do you folks know some of the neighborhoods in which the med students live (i.e places that are safe to reside yet close to campus)? Thanks!

I am thinking about sending an interest letter along with updated transcripts for the Fall semester. I am wondering if this would have any benefit at all seeing that it is pretty late at this point (the match being only 2 weeks away).

Hi! Congratulations to those accepted...and best wishes for those still in the game! Some housing ideas near UTSW (You will be busy--it's good to live close to campus...You will love that you can take a shower right after anatomy and then zip back to campus on the shuttle for an evening study session):

North Campus area (closer to Uptown/Oaklawn, Starbucks, grocery stores, etc)
RENT: Student housing = MED PARK (kind of expensive, good security, shuttle to school, lots of students) // Inwood on the Park Apartments = closest to camps, shuttle, a little cheaper (but charge for parking, trash, etc), lots of students http://inwoodonthepark.com/templates/template_prime/default.asp?w=inwoodonthepark&t=template_prime

BUY: Brand new 3 bed + study / 3.5 bath condo, 2 car garage. Your mortgage could be cheaper than rent...And if you could convince 1-2 people to be your roommates, you could GET PAID to live there!!! Take advantage of the TAX CREDIT and really make a smart deal! ONLY 1 FOR SALE!! http://newcondonew.vflyer.com/home/flyer/home/2935473
Walk across the street to the shuttle--be in class, in the gym, etc within 5 minutes (wait for the shuttle indoors!!!) A few students have done this (parents helped buy and they are "getting paid" by two roommates); your neighbors are otherwise young professionals--physicians, UTSW employees, etc...

**Not much foot traffic in this area (very industrial), so it feels more secure than South Campus. Your classmates will drive to this area, park here, and ride the shuttle in the morning--You, already here, get to sleep in!

South Campus (closer to hospitals)
RENT: Various "new construction" apartments--relatively cheap, more "foot traffic" to deal with (sometimes sketchy people loitering near Parkland); some retail starting to fill the lower level of apartments, which is nice.

I emailed to check my status because for some reason I couldn't log in to the website. Part of the e-mail said this:
"We have conducted all of our interviews for this year's application cycle. If you were not invited for an interview, then the Admissions Committee did not select you from the applicant pool. "

Looks like I didn't get an invite. Not really a surprise since I'm OOS, so it's a real shot in the dark. Good luck to everyone else though!

I'm sorry driftkitty. Good luck to everyone this cycle, in at UTSW or not. What a process this has been!

Not yet.

So, I assume we're just expected to check our email (multiple times a day) until June?

I can already feel my cortisol levels increasing >:|

Official: UTSW did not make any offers for the match. They will "resume rolling admission" as people withdraw. They claim that people are not ranked... but they undoubtedly are.

Just checked my email and... I'm in! Woohoo. Just a couple days after getting the post match wait list email too.

I'm OOS btw. Good luck to everyone!

I just got accepted too!! Interviewed in September. 😀

congrats guys! woodwkr when did you interview?
I interviewed in December and was told they'd already given out all of the pre-match acceptances. Then they didnt match anyone on match day so I feel like I've never even had a chance yet...anxiously awaiting an email!

Hey longhorn, where are you planning on going?
I don't know yet, it's kinda complicated.

I've chosen UTSW as my TMDSAS school, but I personally like Baylor more (because my family's in Houston). Oh well, Baylor keep dead-silent for over 4 months......Only God knows what's wrong. Meanwhile, I am still waiting for some OOS schools. I might come to UTSW though, in case Baylor doesn't show me any love, and those OOS schools don't work for me. Maybe see you later in August 🙂 Best of luck

Anyway, I just wanna put a plug in for MS0 day, which is Next Friday, February 19th. Make sure you come... or else... you will miss out on a great opportunity to see what UTSW has to offer.

Congrats once again, and as always, if y'all have any questions, feel free to PM me.

actually, I think texas residents have until june 15.

If I ask them where I am on the waitlist, will they tell me or do schools not do that?

funkydrmonkey,

I am going to be graduating next year and applying to medical school. I am from dallas and UTSW is my #1 choice, and I volunteered at Parkland. However, even though UTSW takes a lot of students, i find that they are one of the toughest schools to get an interview/matriculated. I have very good GPA right now, but i have no research experience (they seem to really like research) what advice can you give me that might help my chances? How did you prepare for your interview, and what kind of questions did they ask you? what should i focus on in the upcoming year? THANKS!

They may not have a ranked list, but maybe they could give me an estimate of whether or not I will move off the waitlist?

i'm not sure of what they can or can not do..but i don't think it would hurt to call and ask! good luck!

I heard it was something like...depending on the type of student that left to open up the spot, they would try to fill the opening with a similar student.

Guess it kind of makes sense. Dunno though

hey, i know you weren't talking to me, but i had absolutely no research experience AT ALL and I prematched to UTSW. I'm not sure how important they view research, but I don't think it's required or very necessary to get into this school. I'm sure your GPA is higher than mine cause mine wasn't that high...I never even volunteered at a hospital. I had good extracurriculars and good letters of reccommendation. your LOR are probably more important than you think. Just my two cents..sorry it wasn't asked for lol.

Not sure if this is the right place for this post - but - would those of you who are accepted be willing to share your stats? GPA, MCAT, other pertinent info...

I am a "nontrad" (Clinical PharmD at a UTSW affiliated hospital (trying to maintain my anonymity), tons o' clinical experience and extracurriculars, undergrad GPA 3.39, sGPA 3.4, Biology Major at Texas A&M, MCAT pending) with high hopes of attending UTSW and am curious about this years matriculant stats...

Thanks!

I'm a nontrad. as well, so hopefully that helps you. Feel free to check my mdapps link to the left.

hey, thank you your input is greatly appreciated. Btw, UTSW ranked #6 in the world in biomedical research, and they re HIGHLY known for the research and MD/PH program. my GPA is a 3.77, and i know based on last years stats there mean matriculants had a 3.83 (insane) and a 33 MCAT (also insanely competitive). What did you do to stand out? how did you get good LOR. i transfered from my old school so i really dont know any of my professors really well. What should i do? most schools require 2 LOR from professors in the department in which you are a major. Also, what were ur extracurricular activities?

I am going to send you a private message lol

quiet thread today...

Maybe it's because everyone who went to the MS0 + med student social last night is still recovering!!!

I didn't go to the MS-0 program (something wrong with my car🙁). How was it?

It was a lot of fun and definitely worthwhile. Friday we had a few short presentations about getting ready to start school, paperwork, etc., and then broke off into groups and went to other presentations about medical student research opportunities, international health opportunities, extracurricular and clinical opportunities (preceptorships, shadowing, specialty interest groups, etc.), and being the SO/having a SO while in medical school (actually very helpful!). A lot of important information but nothing you can't find out without having been there.

Friday night we went to the multicultural event/performance and had lots of delicious food from around the world and watched lots of cool dances/performances by the med students. Then there was a social at this bar/pub near the school which was packed to the point of having spillover onto the sidewalk with med students and MS0s, and which turned into one huge dance party and was absolutely a blast.

Saturday we had a delicious hot breakfast with a student panel (MS1s through residents). Then had a presentation about financial aid. Apparently UTSW has a TON of scholarship and grant money to throw around these days; 90+% of people are expected to get scholarships (they're increasing aid from last year by 50%).

Then we had lunch and went on a bus tour of dallas, past lots of neighborhoods and apartments where students live, past a lot of sites with things to do (malls, shopping centers, restaurants, AA center where the Mav's play, etc.). Then we ended up in the arts district and had a little more than an hour to visit the Dallas Museum of Art and the Natter (sp?) Sculpture Garden, get a free coffee/latte, etc.

By early Friday, lots of people were deciding between UTSW and Baylor, and by Saturday afternoon almost everyone I talked to was 99+% sold on UTSW. I think I'm one of those people. The people is what did it for me. And the living situation is excellent! TONS of apartments to choose from that are less than what I'm paying now in Austin and are definitely accurately described as "luxury" apartments. And while I was annoyed at having to drive to school, the parking situation for med students is so good at UTSW and so inexpensive, it's no longer an issue for me.

Agreed. A lot of people were more or less on the fence between the two but after getting a chance to meet all their future classmates/faculty/upperclassmen it made the decision way way easier. Especially with all the financial stuff going on, UTSW seems to have no shortage of funds to help students out...and I'm sure we're all bored of hearing about Baylor's financial situation by now 😛

Thanks guys for the informative responses. 👍 You guys sound to have SOSOSO much fun this weekend.🙂

I think I'm one of those people too! UTSW folks are AMAZING recruiters I should say. Seriously. 😀

I've been praying for some OOS waitlist movement, but it's looking more and more like there won't be that much movement this year.🙁

Why you have such conclusion?

It seems like UTSW would be a tough offer to turn down. Between the cheap tuition, scholarships, good rep and various opportunities, it would be a difficult choice. I have a couple of friends (one OOS and one IS) that have/will turn down Vandy, Baylor, WashU, and Mayo in favor of Southwestern. I just have to hope that some OOS applicants will turn down their offers and open up a few more spots.:xf:
