Congrats to the people who just made it in.

I just interviewed this week. Would it be a wise idea to send an update letter now? or should I send one after I hear a decision

Thanks in advance

how much could you have possibly done since the interview and now?

send a simple thank you note and state your interest right now

send an update in a few months when you actually have things to update with and it might help you to get off the waitlist in case u are placed on it.

Is there any way to change our status on the WL? I mean do you think sending in an additional LOR will move me in any way?

This waiting thing sucks, especially when you don't have any acceptances 🙁

Tell me about it, I don't have any interview invites yet 🙁 and I am a Michigan resident.

I'm sorry to hear that...being in medical school purgatory sucks...all this waiting....thinking about what you did wrong, how you could have mad things better...

So do you not have ANY interviews, or just none in MI.

None at all. I will say that I have been complete at most schools since mid-late October because I didn't get my MCAT scores back until 10/9/09, and I didn't have the Wayne State secondary until the following Thursday because of their pre-secondary screen, but I would have thought at least MSU would have offered me an interview by now seeing as how well I fit their mission. So if you account for the time they probably took off for the holidays, I have been complete at MSU and Wayne State for right around 3 months, so hopefully my number will be called soon.

Don't worry your time will come soon! Just keep your fingers crossed for that interview invite. Good luck!

I would call and check. I called yesterday and found out they sent me an invite on 1/ 25. Don't know the date yet since its in the mail. Does anyone know how much time you get till the interview? I am scared that it will get here saying I only have 7 days to make it to Detroit. I hope they give us advance warning.

Just wondering when you were complete abearhin. Because im still waiting on a response from wayne....

I was complete October 26th and I'm out of State but from Ohio about 3 hrs away. It took a while for me too but just have faith. It will happen!!!

Well if you don't believe it, then get the 2009 version of USNWR, because that's what it says in there.

This is a direct paste from usnews.com where I also have a subscription:

Fall 2008 Admissions Statistics
Total admissions data 4259 applied, 754 interviewed, 588 were accepted, 290 enrolled...588/754 = 77.98%
In-state admissions data 1396 applied, 522 interviewed, 406 were accepted, 246 enrolled...406/522 = 77.78%
Out-of-state admissions data 2863 applied, 232 interviewed, 182 were accepted, 44 enrolled...182/232 = 78.45%

So I have been looking at this closely as I obsess with my chances of getting off of the wait list.

IS #Not Accepted = 116 - 26 (rejected) = 90
OS #Not Accepted = 50 - 11 (rejected) = 39

So let say maybe 5% gets rejected? Is that fair?

So that doesn't include the people who were wait listed and withdrew before they were accepted. Let say that is ~10%, people who got into their first choice and with drew from the wait list.

IS 90 - 52 = 38
OS 39 - 23 = 16

So if you aren't one of the 38 or 16 people, depending on if you are IS/OS, then you will eventually get in??

Doesn't that seem high? Just wondering!

You will stress yourself out too much if you keep thinking of your chances. My recommendation is that you find a hobby to keep you busy during the waiting period.

Ummm, you're overanalyzing this way too much. From 2008, almost 78% of people who were interviewed eventually got in. Those are pretty favorable odds and it doesn't really do your sanity any good to speculate how many of those that weren't accepted turned into rejections and how many were due to withdrawing 😉.

Also, they just posted the numbers from the entering class of 2009. The stats are pretty much identical 10.05 MCAT/3.64 GPA, but there were 450 fewer applications and 253 more interviews offered.

Finally, the way you presented it, being one of 38 or 16 people to be rejected post-interview is not correct...If 522 were interviewed and 406 were accepted, that means that of the 522 interviewed, 77.78% or 406 of them were eventually accepted, and 22.22% or 116 of the 522 interviewed were NOT accepted...if it happened as you suggested that 10% of these folks who interviewed that weren't accepted was because of withdrawing their applications is accurate, that would mean that 12 people (rounded from 11.6) withdrew before acceptance, therefore 104 people would have been rejected post-interview if they were IS.

yea, i know plenty of people that got in last year with similar stats. hold tight, if you interviewed you have a good chance of getting in. orientation isnt until august, so u got until then

Yup, as long as your interview went well.

Ya, my interview went well, in fact my interview said she thought I had a good chance. But I was wondering if my chances are still good to get off the waitlist? I was talking to someone the other day that told me that majority of wayne students have an MCAT over 30 and very few under 30, so I was actually considering preparing for a retake in case I don't get in so I can apply early for next year...

also does anyone know how wayne takes retakes bc i've already retaken the MCAT. First was 26Q then 29Q. Does that raise any red flags when they review your file and do they consider your older scores?

A "majority" is 50% + 1, so yes, a majority of their students probably do have an MCAT of 30 or higher. However, their AVERAGE MCAT is 30, therefore somewhere around half of their entering class is going to have an MCAT BELOW 30. By the way, if they sent you a secondary and an interview invite, then they believe you are suitable to go to medical school so why would they be concerned with "red flags" if you've gotten this far? Finally, it's not all about stats, especially at Wayne where they say they look at a holistic approach to your application. I know people who have gotten in to Wayne State with MCAT scores lower than 29 because they realize that numbers don't tell the whole story.

My interviewer had all 4 of the files of people she was interviewing laid out on tje table. The have the a real brief snapshop of the stats of each person and not a single one of us had higher then a 30 (well they had them as composite scores, so better to say none of us had higher then a 10). So in a class of 300 I bet a lot of people did have a 30+ but since the average is 30, I would not worry if your interview went well with a 27-29.

I was interviewed in December and took the MCAT twice (31-->33) and it was mentioned in my interview. He only asked why I took it twice and just wanted me to talk a bit about it.

Overall, if they didn't ask you about it in the interview, I'm sure its a non-issue and won't probably influence their decision much.

I bet the reason he asked is because your first score was already quite adequate and not a "red flag."

For those of you who are on the WL, do you know how it works? I mean do we just all wait since it's ranked? Is there any point in sending in another LOR or LOI?

I also have a 29S MCAT and is under 30. However my scores are unbalanced and I had a horrible interviewer. So I was just wondering what my chances were of getting off of the wait list.

You'll really just have to wait and see. I don't think a letter of intent could hurt at all, but it's not even "waitlist season" yet so just sit tight for a while 😉.

So when does wait list season start?

I would imagine just after the May 15 deadline when people with multiple acceptances have to withdraw from the schools they won't be attending in order to get their deposits back.

ya, what I meant by a red flag was if the committee would judge your MCAT score lower than someone with the same score but who has only taken it once (def. used the wrong phrase lol). ex. 26->29 vs. a a person taking it once and getting a 29.

Since the MCAT is a standardized exam, I don't think it will matter that you took it twice. It's not like one can automatically do better the second time around just because he/she took it once before. It's not like one can just say "well of course you did better the second time, you've taken it before." The MCAT isn't that type of test. Also, if someone gets a 34 on their third attempt after having scored in the 20s twice previously, I think it just shows that person was prepared better than the 2 times previous and isn't necessarily a function of having taken it twice before.

I like the way you think!!

any recent interview invites lately?

I thought I might be able to help ya out here...I contacted them a while ago and the nice lady in the office told me that the admissions committee sent out a "few" invitations to interview the very last week of January and then she said they "might" be sending some more this week, but it didn't sound like an absolute by any means. She also said that they plan on sending more out over the next few weeks as the committee will be actively reviewing applications and the last time they'll probably send more out will be "sometime" in March. So it looks like those who are still waiting to hear back from them could come at any time. Good luck getting one.

Does anyone know if Wayne will let you know your rank or position on the waitlist?

I FINALLY got my interview invitation in the mail today from Wayne. I'm IS and was complete October 6th. My interview is on February 26th. I know there is a decision date on February 24th, so I obviously won't be looked at then. Anyone know when the decision date in March is? I'm guessing sometime in the last week.

March 24. So you'll have about a month to think about it 😉.

Honestly, when you're putting together a package to welcome someone to your school/city, maybe leave out the section where you tell someone to "not stop your car on a random side street if you're lost", "if it's late, feel free to run red traffic lights". That's just.... not cool.

noooooo!! please tell me they didn't seriously put that in the packet!?!?!? C'mon Detroit is not that dangerous. I was born and raised there seriously not that bad of a city... boo to WSU!

The Orientation Guide is incredibly thorough and very helpful. Covers more topics than I've seen any other school attempt. With that said, this passage is what freaked me out:

"If you find yourself lost, keep driving and get yourself back to a freeway or major road. Never pull over and sit on your cell phone trying to get directions on a random Detroit side street at night. If it comes down to it, at 2 am in Detroit when you are lost and there are no other cars around, you don't need to sit at red lights waiting for a green...."

to be fair, this is sound advice no matter what city you happen to be in

I have friends in Chicago who run stop signs/lights late at night in certain parts of the city

It also refers to the People Mover as the Mugger Mover . . . Ok, public transportation in Detroit is SEVERELY lacking (thanks in large part to bad city planning in the 1950's and the big 3) but the People Mover isn't THAT bad.

My dad takes it every day.

Does anyone know how long after you submit the secondary application does it usually take for them to let you know if you are invited for an interview/rejected?

Seems like 3 to 4 months is the norm for late submission. Obviously if you just submitted a few days ago, it won't take them that long because they'll only be sending invites until sometime in March, so those ppl's turn around times will be much quicker. It looks like there's only one post-secondary rejection listed in the rejection thread for Wayne State, but there are undoubtedly many more.

So for those who didn't like this passage..... we should invite students from all over the country & not let them be aware of basic safety in Detroit? I think the school should be complimented for the guts to put this passage in the guide. Life before all else. Way to go WSU.

I am sure there are tons of schools in bad neighborhoods (& frankly they make the best schools, as they usually serve uninsured which adds to the patient list... thus benefiting med students) but nobody probably was so outright about student safety!
