it did not. just Alternate list, although final alternate list was mentioned in the letter. Did anybody get a letter that said they're on the final alternate list?

It doesn't matter what they wrote. You're on the same alternate list as everyone else. Just try to enjoy the summer and make alternate plans.

Well, I'm officially rejected. I don't know if it's because I confirmed my attendance at another school though, is that considered "matriculation"? *sigh*

Good luck to everyone else on the waiting list! I'm rooting for you!

I'm sorry to hear that! Best of luck though in medical school =)

I was wondering, did you get an email or did you have to call?

It was an email with an attachment, just like how they notified me about me being on the waiting list (except with a different theme this time. Heh!)

Make that two of us:

"The Admissions Committee has carefully reviewed your application to Wayne State University School of Medicine. I regret to inform you that we cannot further consider your application for the entering Freshman Class of 2010."

This sucks beyond words. I mean, I interviewed in early September and I was a reapplicant. As they say, third time's a charm . . .

no - my understanding is that a school cannot see your other acceptances until the school, itself, accepts you. and confirming your attendance elsewhere (I'm assuming you mean paying a deposit) is not matriculation. I too will be attending a school that is not Wayne State, I have paid the deposit, and I received the alternate list email from Wayne State today. but who cares, we are going to med school, right?!

good luck, everyone

Sorry to hear that man. You interviewed early which means they at least liked your application. And now you are out of this horrible limbo that most of us waitlisters are in.
edit: be sure to ask them what you can improve. They will give you this information since you were rejected. They wouldn't have done so if you were still on the waitlist (i tried).

Yeah, SpAnKz89X. Be sure to get either an in-person appointment or a phone call appointment with Dean Silas Norman. He'll break it down to you straight up and tell you exactly what you can do to be a stronger applicant. I am sorry to hear of your result, and I wish you the best. This is by far one of the most arduous paths to a professional career, and we should all commend each other for even the simple act of deciding to go down it.

I interviewed early September too. I also got rejected today lol. I kinda expected it after not getting an acceptance early on. Oh well...class of 2015 is not bad. :meanie:

They are saying "FINAL" because they have now passed all of their offer dates. Basically, they have filled the class and given out the maximum number of acceptances. From now on offers will be made only when someone who has been accepted, declines their offer.

Starting May 15th, applicants are obligated to only hold one acceptance at a time, therefore the spots at the others schools they were accepted to are open to applicants on the waitlists. There are no official offer dates anymore and waitlisters can expect a phone call or email at any point from now (or May 15th more likely) until the day before orientation the first week of August.

iv heard of people getting accepted even during orientation
i believe they keep the offers going until the first week of classes
so for those of u still on the wait list good luck and dont lose hope!

Wow I'm so sorry to hear that. I honestly didn't think they would have the nerve to reject people this late! I wish you the best of luck! Don't give up, my friend applied 5 times and finally got in. No one wants to do that but don't give up.

Definitely call them and ask to see if there is anything you can improve on.

I'm on the final alternative list as well. I thought I would be rejected a long time ago, I'm thoroughly surprised that Wayne has kept me so long.

Sorry to hear this. In line with everyone else, don't give up, find out how you can improve your application and reapply early. You got an interview which means that you are medical school worthy! AMCAS for 2011 opened on May 4th and I've already started mine.

Does anyone know when they will start giving out acceptances for dropped spots? There must have been some folks who already withdrew. Are they waiting for May 15th to send new offers?

When looking at last years thread, the first report of a waitlister being accepted was actually a few days before May 15th. Actually, if my memory serves me correct I think it was May 14th, but you could go back and take a look. This late in the season, I'd be surprised if at least 10% of the class hasn't already withdrawn. It seemed like a lot of students got pulled off the waitlist around the beginning of June but in reality, people were getting pulled off the waitlist all summer long. I even remember seeing a very decent amount of movement into July.

We are all in this together, so lets be sure to report on any news, even if its a friend of a friend who gets pulled off.

On another note, does any one know when all of the student government mumbo-jumbo gets started for M1s?

Since acceptences are now based on our scores, and our scores are already determined, what do you guys think about sending an LOI... worthwhile or not?

A LOI is pointless at this point. I've talked to the Admissions office about this and it was stated briefly before on the boards. Essentially, the only way that a LOI will work in your favor at this point is in this situation: Its orientation week, classes are about to start in two days and they need a student NOW. At that point, they dont have the luxury of offering some kid out in Cali, and then wait a day for the yes/no. So lets say they have like 3 kids with a score of 2.64 (I'm assuming you know all about the ranking system), they'll look at each students files and LOIs to see which student is willing to pick up and move to Detroit immediately. However, this situation might not even happen. So you're LOI certainly won't hurt, but it also has a verrrrry small chance of helping. If anything, I'd suggest holding off till July. If you are still waitlisted, shoot one out then and just being blunt "I'll move there tomorrow if need be."

Does anyone know if in-state vs out-of-state is taken into consideration for the waitlist movement? Like, if 30 IS withdraw, will Wayne offer 30 IS students until they get all 30 to accept? I'd imagine that they have a IS:OSS ratio in mind that they'd like to meet but I wonder how strict they are with it. I know we all think its the very next person with the highest rank who gets pulled off, but I wonder if they'd ever take an IS student with a lower ranking over an OSS student with a higher ranking because they want to meet their residency requirments.

This blows. 😎

Any idea what percentage of the list was chucked?

Last year, they said that "a few dozen" were rejected from the bottom of the list. We've had word of 3 on these boards that have been rejected, and there were probably a few more who didn't post their rejections, because, welll why would you.

I'd say they followed suit from last year and rejected a few dozen again. I have NO evidence for this whatsoever, but here is what I'm thinking...

There have been roughly 1000 interviews this year. 300 have already been accepted. That leaves us 700 hopefuls.
In recent years, Wayne eventually makes 1.5-2 times the amount of offers as available spots. This year is kind of a wild card because of the economy, health care reform, and the general outlook for the city of Detroit. I think to be safe, we can say that Wayne will make an additional 225 offers throughout the summer. We had 700 hopefuls, but a few dozen have been rejected, and a few others have said that they will be withdrawing (hopefully sooner rather than later).
Again, to err on the lets-not-get-our-hopes-up-too-much side, I think we are left with about 650 hopefuls.

If I was to guess, I'd say 1/3-1/2 of us will be getting pulled off... eventually.... hopefully. lol.

Last year, Wayne State called to inform students of getting off the waitlist. But when I talked to the admissions office a few weeks ago, I was told that they *may* be reserving phone calls for students who haven't responded to the initial email notifications. Once you guys know how we'll be contacted, please spread the word... so I can frantically lose my breath each time I get an email/phone call. Until then, I'll be doing both.

I think we should get a few people together to go to the bar on May 15th to celebrate.

I was accepted off the waitlist this morning. I received an email telling me I was on the final waitlist yesterday and had been put on the waitlist on the previous offer day. The email I received told me to call the office to speak with Dawn because there was a change in my status. When I spoke with her, she told me a couple of people had withdrawn yesterday after they sent out the waitlist emails, so they're definitely not waiting until the 15th. Good luck to all!

Congrats! I'd imagine some others have been accepted too then since its in Wayne's best interest to notify students ASAP.

OMG!

Here we go people, our time has come. 😀😀

I'm gonna have a panic attack checking my email every morning, and now I will be obsessively checking this site, even more than I already do, if that's possible hahaha.

Good luck everyone! 👍

Thanks for that comprehensive speculation, seanshah. Man, if it was 1/2 of us, that almost sounds too good to be true, even. Even though we truly don't know our chances exactly, I think it helps keep us hopeful, though. We can't lose hope so long as we're still in this.

I had talked about it before, but I finally did withdraw today. I was lucky enough to get a better deal elsewhere, so good luck to all of you still waiting. One of you might get a call tomorrow.

Here are a few obsessive questions: Did the email come with an attachment? Around what time of the morning did you get the email?

At this point, any news from Wayne is def. going to be good news.

Congratulations!!!! This has given me a reason to be neurotic about checking my email and keeping my phone with me at all times

I'm so opposite of you lol! When there is nothing I can do about a situation, I cease to care anymore. So I don't even bother checking my phone or email because it's too stressful to be thinking about it all the time

👍 for wait list movement! I think the list has got to be ~500 people long. There is no way they are taking off 250+ something off the list, that is just crazy. That means only 50 of the people they accepted will actually go?

However, I do think that after 5/15 the list will get smaller and smaller as others are getting pulled off of other lists. I would like to say that by the end there will be ~300-400 people left and they will probably pull 75-100. But still those are some awesome chances!!!

Good luck to everyone here and thank you to those who are withdrawing before 5/15.

I'm not sure about the stats for 2009 because Wayne didn't publish the number of students accepted, but in 2008, I remember reading that they accepted a total of 550 students or something like that. That year they interviewed only like 780 or something like that, whereas last year they interviewed about 1000. In 2008, Wayne picked up like 250 from the waitlist. So yea, about 50% of the people accepted to Wayne eventually enroll at Wayne. I know this percentage seems ridiculously low, but one thing that we have to be willing to admit is that Wayne State is a back-up school for many students. The University of Michigan sends more kids to medical school than any other school in the country. In 2009, 527 students from U of M applied to Wayne. Of those 527, 78 enrolled at Wayne. I went to U of M for my undergrad, so I understand the successes of their students (I didn't partake in this success obviously, as I wouldn't STILL be looking for a medical school). I'd be willing to bet that Wayne accepted MUCH more than 78 students from Michigan, but they chose to go to a better school. I'd imagine that just from the U of M-withdrawn-students, Wayne will be able to accept 75 waitlisters.

No one knows what this year will be like though.

I'll second that, although I'm an iphone guy myself. Congratulations on being accepted.

I'm not sure about the stats for 2009...

Here ya go:

Fall 2009 Admissions Statistics
Total admissions data: 3809 applied, 1007 interviewed, 624 were accepted, 290 enrolled
In-state admissions data: 1400 applied, 558 interviewed, 413 were accepted, 222 enrolled
Out-of-state admissions data: 2409 applied, 449 interviewed, 211 were accepted, 68 enrolled

Looks good for instaters. Not so much for us OOS applicants.

Somebody at WSU told me that they don't necessarily interview students that they "really want to admit" early in the cycle. The person suggested that they just interview people in September if they applied early.

I know somebody that got accepted 3 days before school started...

I interviewed early September too. I also got rejected today lol. I kinda expected it after not getting an acceptance early on. Oh well...class of 2015 is not bad. :meanie:

Ummm 46% is pretty good....compared to A LOT of other state schools or other schools in general.

It is still good, but not as high as the 78% in 2008. I was hoping it would be close to that. Now its a 1 in 2 shot. Not complaining though.

That's true...78% is much better. I wonder why that is? Don't worry maybe it's a fluke like last year many OOS got into their state schools or something you know? Because with Wayne's insane OOS tutition, it makes sense that OOS wouldn't go there if they get into a cheaper school.

2 years worth of data isn't enough to really make a prediction, we'll be okay 👍

I agree with you guys... 2 years worth of data isn't enough to make a prediction. Especially with the dynamics of today. I do think that Wayne is really pushed more now than ever to take students that will want to stay in Michigan to practice. I remember reading an article in the Detroit news how the state is already at a shortage of 600 doctors and by 2020 that shortage will grow to over like 2,100 doctors or something like that. That is only aspect to look at...

Lets be honest, Detroit isn't exactly the creme de fraise of cities at this moment. So it may be possible at least a small amount of out-of-state students have willingly withdrawn from Wayne before they are even offered a spot, making the acceptance numbers seem a bit more skewed. This could be a possibility when we take into consideration where Detroit is at today and when we consider the recent explosion in OSS medical school openings. But even if we could get confirmation on this, it still wouldn't make up for the HUGE difference in OSS acceptance rate.

Its going to be interesting when Western Michigan, Central Michigan and Oakland have medical schools up and running in the next few years. I know Oakland is opening up next year, but when all three of these schools are ready to go, I'd imagine it would be pretty easy to get into medical school if you're a Michigan resident.

You should also consider, given the economic climate, that the school (and city), may want OOS applicant money (its like 75 Gs for an OOS student to goto Wayne). I guess IS and OOS applicants both have things to hope for 🙂 Fact of the matter is that its pretty inconsequential at this point, there's nothing we can do!

Good luck all!

Yeah, Michigan's medical schools will double in just a few years. Answering the doctor shortage will take more than that, though. I don't claim to know much about this, but at the least, there will need to be an increase in residency slots in Michigan to make all these new MDs full-fledged physicians. And that will require some funding or maybe some policy changes.

And I also wonder about the strength of Oakland's/CMU's/Western's curriculum at their onset? Of course there is required accreditation, but beyond that, I'll be curious to see where they draw their faculty and teaching method.

And what about MS3 and MS4 rotations at hospitals? Assuming no new hospitals become teaching hospitals, there will be some competition for rotation spots at the same hospitals. MSU's DO program already has a presence on DMC's campus. The new medical schools of Michigan will ultimately benefit the state, but there will be some competition among them to some extent. The implications of this and how it will look like will be interesting to watch in the following years.

Bottom line is, it's at once an exciting and frightening time to go into medicine in the U.S., but especially in Michigan. It has unique clinical, economic, and political conditions. And dare I say I want to be a part of it and its progress and stabilization?

Ya I would assume they to be somewhat favorable to OOS so they can make more money 😀

But on the other hand it seems that most OOS applicants come from California, I know there is quite a bit of people from CA at Wayne. And Californians are not going to place Detroit very high up on the list.

Has anyone seen "Up In The Air" with George Clooney? When I saw that shot of Detroit which looked like a blizzard, my bf looks at me and says "ummmm are you sure you want to live there?" I don't even think I have anything warm enough for that kind of weather.

In a nut shell, Detroit and Wayne is definitely not very appealing to OOS so I would definitely expect a lot of them to withdraw when they recieve other appectances. I do believe that most OOS go to Detriot because of one reason: they didn't get in anywhere else.

I agree, most OOS probably won't end up there. Interviewing there was definitely an eye opener coming from a university town. But, I definitely do have warm clothes (I'm Canadian...woowoo!) I assume most OOS applicants are like me, and the only way I'll end up at Wayne is if I don't get into the other 3 schools I interviewed at. Hopefully for all you IS applicants, most people are in the same boat as me, and as much as I'd be thrilled to goto any med school, hopefully us OOS applicants get in elsewhere so there's more spots for you guys!!

I think we can safely say that there will be a discrepancy between the education at an established medical school versus the education one will receive at a newly opened Oakland/WMU/CMU. But I'm confident that the newer schools will quickly establish successful programs. At the end of the day, they will still be taking competitive and competent students. One interesting point you brought up was about residencies... If you realllllllly get down to the bare bones of it, doctors aren't made during their 4 years at medical school. Most residents will tell you that the biggest things isn't necessarily the school you went to or even if you honored everything while at school, bur rather your Step 1 will dictate the doors that open up to you. No matter what school you go to, newly accredited or not, you will still match at a good program if you do well on your step 1. I'm sure these schools will be just fine, but I'd still rather graduate from Wayne than from a newly accredited school.

As far as the competition to land a residency spot goes... I think the new health care "reform" has tried to address that issue, but I think it will only add fuel to the fire. Besides the other 4329823 that are raising health care costs, we are told that problem-based medicine is expensive. The argument is that we should focus more on preventive medicine and the solution to this is first: patient education and second: personal accountability. And this should start in the most primary area of care giving... with your primary care physician, which there is a known growing shortage of. So the health care "reform" bill has allotted for more funding for community health centers. Essentially these are tax-payer funded centers that provide affordable/free health care to the disadvantaged of poor and rural areas. The physicians working in these centers are typically primary-care physicians who are actually salaried employees. The health bill in conjunction with Obama's student loan "reform" will give incentives for physicians to join these community health centers. If you have applied to enough medical schools like I have, you will see that these types of programs are already in place: You agree to practice in a rural area and in return you'll get some interest knocked off your loans or you'll receive a stipend while in school. So, yes, while we may have more residents in the next few years, the government will also create new primary care openings with those community health centers. But surely, we will see an increase in the number of hospitals/health offices opening. We cannot deny the recent overlap between medicine and business. With the amount of money that will be flooding the health care sector, I'm sure we will see a continued increase in health care delivery centers. I mean... look at the state of Michigan's economy, yet Providence is still building, as is Beaumont.

If you are at all interested in health care delivery, the business of health care, or if you are just interested in your future vocation, I'd suggest reading "The Innovator's Prescription" by Clayton Christensen. The author is a graduate of Oxford and Harvard and has a MBA and DBA.. the guy knows what he is talking about. Christensen, at times too systematically, breaks down what today's health care system is really about, the problems with it and provides some solutions. Pretty sweet book. We've got a few months before classes start, so why not.

Yea, I would agree... many come here because they can't get in elsewhere. It all depends on how many people applied this year. Everyone says when the economy goes bad, people go back to school. We'll see if the economy was bad enough to force people to move to Detroit

Cali residents are definitely well represented among schools throughout the country. From my understanding, its pretty difficult for even Cali residents to get into a Cali school. Compare that to Texas schools. My cousin went to UT-Houston. Texas residents have it pretty good when applying to medical school. My cousin knew soooooo many people who got into Houston with 25s, 26s, and 27s.

I don't know how much of a financial advantage it is for Wayne to take OSS students. Public universities get a kick-back from the state government for taking in-state students. I'm not sure how much this monetary compensation is, but for whatever reason, I'm sure something has changed the minds of the admissions committee. I'm not sure if the state of Michigan has the funding to encourage Wayne to take more in state students, but I'm sure state legislatures have been encouraging them nonetheless. I dont think the 30% drop in OSS acceptance rate can be attributed solely to the Detroit's current degree of.... ****ty-ness. The state probably wants more IS students so Wayne is giving them more IS students. And the state definitely wants more Michigan physicians... hence OU, WMU, and CMU. Think about it... there were around 42,000 of us applying to medical school each year (at least for the past few years). Only 18k or 19k get in.. You are telling me that Wayne couldn't find an extra 40 or 50 OSS students to fill spots to make more money? From the 30,000 students who didn't get accepted, I'm sure you could find someone to come.. I don't care where you are from... You could be living in Fiji with Kim Kardashian and the Olsen twins... I would still move to ****ty ol' Detroit if it was the only medical school that accepted you. I think the decrease in acceptance was purposeful.

I hope I get pulled off the damn waitlist tomorrow so I can stop writing novels to you guys.

Well I like the novels, they are keeping me entertained at Barnes and Nobles...

Yeah I think it's totally fair for Wayne to accept more MI residents! You don't want like 50% of your graduating class to move away...a lot of state schools don't even take any OOS students unless they have ties because they know this kind of stuff would happen.

I think Wayne accepting 40% is pretty good for a state school! That's why I applied anyways.

I hope you get off the damn list tomorrow too and that goes for all of us. All I know is that I will hang on til the bitter end. If I'm on a plan heading to SGU in August and I get a call from Wayne. I will hop on the next plane back asap :laugh::laugh:

I think we can safely say that there will be a discrepancy between the education at an established medical school versus the education one will receive at a newly opened Oakland/WMU/CMU. But I'm confident that the newer schools will quickly establish successful programs. At the end of the day, they will still be taking competitive and competent students. Though I am entertained by your novels, I hope you get pulled off, too. 🙂

I'm going to the Philippines for 3 weeks in July to see family, and it would be awesome to be able to tell them that I'm going to medical school in the fall--you know, that whole making-your-family-proud thing. I hope I get pulled before July...

Thanks for the info and book recommendation.

In case you guys are interested, this is an article about the possibility of your future tax dollars. The article may seem confusing at first, but the author does a pretty good job of dumbing it down for us. After you read the article, click on the other links the author provides.. I've got them below as well.

It seems like getting a break on the FICA taxes can be partially determined on if your residency program is University based or not... Earlier this year, Wayne restructured their contract with DMC giving DMC sole sponsorship of medical residents. I hope this doesn't screw future residents on getting a potential break on FICA.
