So, I may or may not be in the UP 2015 class facebook group, and there is a lot of buzz about people already looking for roommates and investigating housing during 2nd look.

In the humble opinions of those of you who know anything about housing around CWRU, would it behoove me to try to also figure this type of stuff out already? Or are these people being slightly overzealous and/or are jumping the gun?

Could I potentially start looking sometime in June and find a place and perhaps other humans to live with?

THIS TOTALLY ACCIDENTAL TOP POST BROUGHT TO YOU BY A MONOCLED POMERANIAN WITH TOP-HAT!

I'm going to quote your post with the pomeranian and all because adorable.

I'm curious as to when to start looking for housing too. I'm probably not going to start looking until June because I'm on a waitlist somewhere else and I want to be sure that doesn't pan out before I sign any leases. How hard is it to find a place last minute?

On another note, does anyone know when they usually award scholarships? I sent in my essay and am now ridiculously eager to hear back because scholarship at Case=definite matriculation for Rhesus.

Very much in the same boat you are. Still one school that would have a fair shot at tearing me away, also waiting on those award decisions! A favorable one would probably seal the deal for sure, money matters sometimes 😎. They wrote in the app that they would be made mid-April, I imagine that would imply post 2nd look at the earliest.

Good luck, and I guess we should remember to count our blessings here... the uncertainty we face is enviable when compared to that of many other great applicants out there.

What an absolutely mad process we go through. But over soon.

Quoted for truth.

The housing is more ripe the earlier you go, but you WILL find somewhere in June. If you're reaaaaaally picky about every little specific thing (like I was) it wouldn't hurt to familiarize yourself with options earlier than that. But I found plenty the first week of June. Don't sweat it too much. Also, there are 4th years who will be moving out in May and June, and that's a good time to look at stuff. I recommend researching before, setting up some appts to look at apts/duplexes/houses/whateverfloatsyourboat, and then coming up for a day or two to select one and sign a lease.

That said, if you aren't picky, you can always pick something and then if you find something better during the first year, move for the rest of the time.
I was a bit OCD about it because I WAS NOT GOING TO MOVE EVARR AGAIN in these 4 years. Moving sucks, I hates it.

Let's do this graphically AND log based!:

Looking 100 days in advance if you want this:

A day or two of serious effort in advance of class should be plenty of time to arrange your housing needs. Assuming you don't need a mansion. :meanie:

Where did you get that pic of my place?!!!😱

I'm assuming your place is the ugliest one? :meanie:

Thanks, vc7777, for the easy-to-follow Cleveland housing guide. I'm used to Minneapolis, where you have to start looking at least 4-5 months in advance to get a place near campus.

A most excellent graphical depiction.

I'd like to be within walking distance (~1 mile or less) since my car isn't very snow-worthy and biking sounds like it would be a bit dangerous for much of the year. Do these guidelines apply to places this close? I'll most likely be looking for a 2 bedroom.

Your best bets are the Waldorf (Wal-dorm) or the Triangle, these are appt buildings near Case or in Little Italy (2br might be expensive)

Those are quite close and pretty pricey (for Cleveland). While those are nice digs, there are cheaper, sometimes larger offerings in Little Italy (which is right behind school) and a closer walk than both the Waldorf (up the hill) and the Triangle (on the corner of Euclid and Mayfield). Granted, everything gets cheaper with roommates, so you could easily make the Waldrangle option affordable, or the Little Italy option even cheaper.

Thanks all. I'll (hopefully) be dragging the BF along with me, so I'll have a built-in roommate. Our current 1-bedroom is a little small (mostly due to our bikes and camping stuff, and his brewing equipment), so I figure a 2 bedroom is the way to go. A small yard would also be great...but I assume the closer you get to campus the harder that is to find?

I dunno if it's just me but when I called some apartment associations they told me they already have waiting lists that are hundreds of people long and that June is a big scramble month. I hope maybe we'll get a chance to talk about it at Second Look.

How much is it per month to get a parking spot on campus? I'm looking at apartment listings and it seems like a better deal to live out in Cleveland Heights.

Also, do most first years live with other med students? Would I be a weirdo if I wanted to live alone?

I think I read a parking spot was around $70 or $80 a month...I guess the beautiful thing about Cleveland is that you could probably get a one bedroom pretty cheap if you wanted it...I live in a s***hole in Boston for about $600 a month...I bet I could get a palace with servants in Cleveland for that much...if only the tuition reflected the Cleveland economy as well....

Correct!

This really depends on what your looking at, but it's certainly true that a lot goes up in the air in June.

It is a dollar amount that I am unwilling to pay (especially if they want it up front--they do).

I live alone. I suppose we're both weirdos, then. But seriously, a bunch of people live solo.

Not if you want to live close to school without a roommate.

Edit: Really close to school

Not sure about a palace but from the poking around I've done it looks like I could find a 3-4 bedroom house for what I currently pay for my 1BR 😛

Who's ready for second look??? For those of you coming to the CCLCM part, I'll see you tomorrow night. 😀

At least you have a choice. When you're ugly and live in an ugly house, nobody wants to live with you. It's not too bad until they chase you with sticks!:scared:

Parking: $975 for full year in parking garage near med school building.
A little on the painful side, but I consider it like part of my rent.

As for areas of town, living out near "Severence Center" (a shopping center w/ grocery store, walmart, home depot, great chinese food!, office max etc) has more options. There are tons of houses and duplexes.
The drive from there is like 10-15 mins. Including parking and walking to the classroom, 20-25 mins.

We rent a 3br 3 story 2 full bath house w/2-car garage for $900/mo out there. So $82/mo for parking is worth it. And many ppl walk more than 20 mins.

Utilities add up a bit, like water+sewer+elec+gas = $150-220/mo or so. That's another thing to consider with a house. That said, I GET TO LIVE IN A HOUSE 😀

Myuu's option is a temptation, especially if I were in a long-distance relationship or solo - her box the size of my bedroom costs like $50 less than my house, but comes with all the utilities.

If you are determined to bike, don't live too far down Mayfield, which is northish-east. The roads suck for bikes, and there's a killer hill. Live more to the southish-east - or elsewhere, that's where most of the bikers tend to be.

I love where I live.

Another thing to consider - if you are someone who really wants to be within steps of where most classmates tend to live, consider:
the Waldorf, Triangle, or down Edgehill and Overlook and Little Italy, especially around Cornell or Murry Hill.

Wish I could go to the CCLCM second look! 😛

Speaking of CCLCM...Does anyone know if there's going to be a waitlist being made any time soon? Last year it seemed like Hold and High Holds were either rejected or put on the waitlist in March.

Two of my friends live on the West Side.

L says:

Tremont and Lakewood are the best neighborhoods on the West side.
In terms of rent, Lakewood is much more affordable than Tremont. However, if you ask me, I think that it is too far away from campus and it is not worthwhile given the increase in gas price.
Treetmont is notorious for its restaurants and bars and comfortable living. Not all the areas in Treemont are nice however. In its vicinity with Clark Fulton, the neighborhood can appear a bit more shady. However, not to the point that you would not consider living there.
Quite frankly, I think some places in little Italy and Coventry seem way worse to me.

The key to living on the west is having a car of course and not minding getting on the expressway in the morning. Some people who live in Cleveland Heights drive much more than I do but they never have to get on the expressway : ).

That being said, I encourage the students to visit the place before they rent, to look for a place that has heat included and to look for a place with comfortable parking even if it is not in a garage.
If heat is not included, i would encourage to rent newly renovated places. These often have an energy efficient furnace and new window treatments and can save a fortune during the winter.
If i could pick a place in the west it would be right where I live: across from Metro Health. The place is safe (since close to the hospital) and close to Steelyard Commons (Target, wallmart, home depot, restaurants (Qudoba yummy!) and others). It is also close enough to the West side Market (5 min), downtown (10 min), Case (20 min) and an RTA one way ride away from the airport (for those planning on going home often) : )

C says:

I live in Ohio City and Tremont is really nice. Lakewood is also nice but even further away. Ohio City and Tremont are both nice with decent housing but are boredered by some dangerous neighborhoods so not all of it is the safest. Lots of fun places to go out and eat though around here.

For how many months of the year is it actually possible to bike? I bike to work every day of the year here, but it never snows and rarely rains. From what people at my interview day said, it sounded like most people either drive or walk, and only a few crazies bike.

We're calling it a box? How classy. I was thinking more... shoebox, hovel, cage...

Biking on the street in Cleveland winters= death wish

West side commute through downtown every day= death wish....x2!

Here in Minneapolis, people bike all year round. They buy those face mask things that make you look like a bank robber and wear ski goggles on top of that. If you have good tires and a multi-gear bike it's not so bad to bike in winter....not that I'd ever try it myself!

I've been touring Little Italy via street-view (ah, technology) and that area looks like the kind of place I'd like to live. Anyone know if there are still places available in that neighborhood come June?

It's not the bike rider that's the problem, it's the people in the cars. It's hard enough to get your share of the road in good weather. In bad weather when drivers are not expecting to see someone on a bike?.....deadly.🙁

Oh and yeah, I'd be voting for Little Italy except that if I lived there, then I'd not only be ugly....I'd be fat too!!😉

My input on housing (and I've lived in 5 different places in my 4 years here): if you don't have time to come out and look at places, I'd go for a safe option like the Waldorf or Triangle. They're definitely more expensive, but they're a known commodity and convenient. Little Italy and Cle Heights are definitely cheaper, but the apartments can be hit or miss, especially in Little Italy. For those looking to live in Little Italy, my old landlord (landlord #2) has an apt available in his building that a classmate of mine currently lives in (http://casemed.case.edu/forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1092&sid=fff5eefe0514d14a8664fdbdf2d1500e) and I can vouch that it's a nice place. A lot of the Little Italy places are older though so be careful. I'd recommend against living on the West Side in your 1st two years. Rent's not cheaper than Cle Heights, neighborhood is shadier, drive sucks especially in winter, traffic lights are timed, cars are parked on the right side of the road blocking 1 of the 2 lanes.

Northwest Shaker Square (part of Shaker Heights) is popular with some current 1st and 2nd years CCLCM students. It is a grad student / medical resident area of town near a very lovely Square (they have a farmer's market outdoors during warm months, and an indoor market for some winter months).

Good, solid, housing is available in this area as apartments AND duplexs AND...er...mansions?... five 2nd years pooled their money and rented a house with an indoor squash court (North American regulation size, fyi), a jacuzzi, a full-time guard, and a maid last year. Beautiful place, original artwork. Less than 5 minutes form the Clinic. I heard some current UP 1st years have agreed to rent it next year, but wow....

I digress...for the rest of us mere commoners, if you can budget around $700-$750, you can get a large, newer 1bd/1bt that includes heat and assigned underground parking garage spot. 5 mins commute to CCLCM parking lot (with traffic) in Shaker Heights near the north side of Shaker Square.

PM me if anyone wants referrals in this area in particular.

Also,

See you guys tomorrow as well (I'll be the guy with the rake at a couple of functions tomorrow 😉 )

And....
CONGRATS ICEMAN!!!! WHEN DO WE CELEBRATE WITH PHO!?!?!

I sent mine in about a month ago as well and the check boxes aren't checked yet. Maybe they wait until the deadline to start processing those? My Need Access box has not been checked either, you?

Just an update, I checked my FA page and all relevant boxes are checked (including FAFSA and Need Access) so my file is complete. Did you guys have this happen as well?

My FAFSA checkbox is checked...that's the only thing I've turned in so far. Hopefully finishing up Need Access tonight (grr).

I now have FASFA checked, but not Need Access (even though that's turned in)...so I would guess that will be done shortly.

Yeah, there are a few people who are hardcore bikers and manage to do it most of the year, but not every day. The main deterrent is ice in the winter, and I don't love the roads in this part of town. That said, there are areas with actual bike lanes. Which is win. I can't wait to get out on the bike trails as soon as it gets nice, though! That said, there's a snow storm today. "Last one of the year" ppl say...and is what they said last snow storm 😉

Nooooo, Myuu, don't talk poorly about your nest. I wasn't snubbing it, it's adorable. Single-serving portion with a side of kitteh, a few steps away from UH. I'm a little jealous...of the latter part 😀

What a few ppl said is true - the apts are very hit and miss inside Little Italy. It's a super short walk for some, like dntpanic whose apt is closer to the med school than the freaking PARKING GARAGE, and pretty cheap rent, but it's also tiny and old. They're moving in a couple months.

West side commute through downtown every day= death wish....x2!
Really? I find driving through downtown to be not half bad. I don't do it that often since I live on the east side. But my classmates who do don't think it's bad. One of them rides the rapid every day, actually.

Another of my classmates has a fancy apt downtown in a high rise with 20 ft ceilings and a balcony that can see the lake. I imagine his rent is steep, but it's another option that some have taken.

I heard the word pho!

Yeah, sucks that the CCLCM second look is on a nice March day with snow! But snow is pretty in the Cleve. 👍

Dang. Do you have any idea what they are paying for rent?

Do you guys find that those people who live in a non-med-student-saturated area (i.e. downtown or West Cleveland instead of Little Italy or Cleveland Heights) get left out of the social scene because of where they live?

Also, pets during MS1, yay or nay? I'm thinking doggy, woof.

I <3 fuzzies, but I'm glad I don't have a pet, because when I want to stay up at school all day and not worry about puppy, I can. Not that I frequently stay up there all day, but it would be a stress on me to have to go home to let him out or walk him. I look forward to adopting a pair of bunnies when I'm done with school, though! =:3

Remember pets are a long-term commitment. My cat lived to be 24. That's longer than a son at home XD Dogs need to be walked and . And if you do get one, adopt 👍 I can tell you a thousand reasons why, if you want to hear them.

I'm sure you would never be left out intentionally, but if you're out on the west side and some folks are going out in Little Italy, are you really going to jump back in the car and drive all the way back over? Doubt it. If you're close to where others are, it's just easier to participate. "Falafel Cafe in 15?" "Yeah sure, I'm in!"

I'm a big fan of dogs, they still love you even if you're ugly like me!😀 BUT I'm not a big fan of taking dogs out for walks at all hours of the night and day, or of leaving them home all alone when I'm gone from dawn to dusk. That's why "my" dog lives 3 doors down and I can go play with him whenever I want, while the owners have to feed and clean up after him.😉

As for not living in the middle of everyone, at the start of the year, everyone pretty much invites everyone to everything, and it slowly boils down to many overlapping groups that "tend" to hang out. Some IQ groups become close and hang out a lot. Changing IQ groups mixes it up a bit, which is fun. But there are always things that are going on. If you want to be part of the scene, no matter where you live, you can. That said, if you're someone who puts yourself into situations where you need to be able to walk back to your apartment rather than drive, that's a different story 😛

If I were single, I'd probably like to be nearer to everyone. And it'd be nice to be within eaaaasier hanging-out distance of ppl like Myuu and dntpanic <3. But I really like this neighborhood, and it's kinda neat being just one more house in a normal neighborhood when I want to be 🙂

I'm just guessing here but I would say nay to a dog...and "maybe" to a cat. I don't really think it's fair to a dog to spend so little time with them. Maybe you'll be there enough in the first two years...but 3rd & 4th probably not...and residency...I would guess definitely not (it's a 12-15 year commitment). If you have an SO or a family member nearby...that's a different story. However, I'd definitely be interested in hearing about any med students who have gotten a dog and made it work though.

👍👍👍 I'd definitely adopt.

However, I'd definitely be interested in hearing about any med students who have gotten a dog and made it work though.

I have a friend here at the University of Minnesota med school that has a dog. She and her roommate share responsibilities. I think the feasibility of having a dog is really dependent on the curriculum of the school you're attending, though. More required classes=less time for the puppers. I might wait until MS-2 when Boyfriend moves to Cleveland and can play housewife...er, husband...er, boyfriend. Houseboyfriend.

Oh also I want to give a big THANK YOU to all the Case Western students here for being so helpful and forthcoming with housing info and advice. Having you guys to bounce questions off of makes me feel so much more comfortable with the possibility of moving out to Cleveland.

LA...love the weather, not such a huge fan of the city (i.e. suburban sprawl) itself.

If I end up here I have a dog people can rent out for the afternoon if they need their puppy fix haha. I'd be coming with a significant other, otherwise I agree that it's far too big a responsibility.

But he loves people and we could use the help tiring him out!
