TOP!

....

I just checked my status and saw that I got rejected from CCLCM. Ouch. I guess I am the first person on SDN that got rejected from there (that said something about it, anyway). Maybe I was more of a risk since I am interested in exploring research options rather than already being committed to a life of academic medicine... who knows.

No news about the UP interview or not, but if I am rejected from there I will be super confused! I feel like I am a perfect match for the program... but of course adcoms may disagree hahaha.

Anyway, congratulations on the interviews guys, and good luck on them :luck:!! I hope I will have good news about the UP over the next few days..

I just checked my status and saw that I got rejected from CCLCM. Ouch.

same. And I have 600 hours (3 semesters) of research as an undergrad and another 2,000 hours of paid research as a post-grad. And nice MCAT. I thought this might be my best chance reach-school.

Again, same here. I'm gonna go sit in a corner and cry now.

They don't know what they're missing suncrusher! Okay let's go drink beer until we pass out

I am sorry to hear that you guys got rejected. Did they send you a status update email or were you just stalking the website? Im nervous to log in to iapply

Just checked iapply. Rejected also from CCLCM. 🙁

This was one of my top choices so pretty bummed.

I had pretty awesome research + clinical too (or so I thought...)! Mine was completed 8/3.

Well, another door closed. I'm glad that at least they didn't keep us hanging... I may not be so lucky with some other schools.

You guys aren't alone. I was looking at this thread last night and so I decided to check iapply... I was rejected from CCLCM too. Hopefully we'll all have better luck with the UP.

Alright! Interview invites to college and university programs. Completed 8/10

Yay! Case likes me! 😀

Just got an interview invite for the University Program. I was complete 8/5, so maybe they're sort of going in order?

so i was complete July 21st and appled to both programs, people who were complete in august r getting decisions...is there still hope?

you're screwed...you should have bananaed them

I called CCLCM and Case yesterday because I was going to be in town and CCLCM said they haven't even looked at my app but Case told me that they were waiting for CCLCM to decide. The Case lady said "well at least we didn't reject you" in an optimistic tone. So CCLCM is probably just dragging their feet a little; it doesn't seem like either program holds on to rejections for very long. Id say theres still hope.

I keep hearing, "no news is good news" from current medical students. So, as long as you have not heard about a rejection, you are still in it.

My understanding is that there are currently no attendings who graduated from this program so we can't say whether they're staying in academia. I was wondering though if anyone knew how many of the residents are pursuing research-heavy residencies. I know there are certain pathways (ie. the Holmann Pathway for radonc, the ABIM Research Pathway, etc) that emphasize academics and provide protected time to conduct research. It'd be interesting to see if a large percentage of graduates of the College Program are pursuing these types of residencies.
Sorry to repost a question but I was wondering if any current students of CCLCM happen to know anything about this. I searched around on the school website but couldn't find any such info.

As to the first part, the 'oldest' CCLCM grads are 2nd year residents right now. As to the rest, I think we'll have to wait for a CCLCMer intervention.😳

Congrats on interview invites! I heard that interviews start mid-September...time really flies. And sorry to hear about rejections from the college program - but the UP is absolutely amazing, don't let that get you down! Really, they keep bringing in leading experts in the fields to present topics, and the facilitated small-group learning process is better than I even thought. <3

A few CCLCM students I've run into so far have expressed interest in doing a gig in an educational institution and going hybrid clinical/research. But CCLCMer is the true font of knowledge of all things College and the secrets therein. 😀

And it seems CCLCMer's coming back in a week or so - what day shall we set for the Eggplant Potluck I, 2010?

And what's more, how do we FIND all the SDNers who haven't posted in ages in order to invite them? I could always send the listserve something like
"Calling all of SDN - please email me for eggplantelicious details" :meanie: lmao

Right, there are currently no alum attendings from CCLCM. The first class graduated in 2009, so they are now in their second year of residency. The earliest some of them will become attendings is in July 2012. This is assuming that they don't do a fellowship.

I was wondering though if anyone knew how many of the residents are pursuing research-heavy residencies. I know there are certain pathways (ie. the Holmann Pathway for radonc, the ABIM Research Pathway, etc) that emphasize academics and provide protected time to conduct research. Sorry, I don't know the answer to that, and I haven't ever seen any stats about it. It's possible that some of the IM residents are doing ABIM--those programs don't require applicants to have a PhD, just substantial research experience. But my understanding is that people join this kind of program during their first or second year of residency, not while they're applying. So the med school probably isn't going to know who is doing ABIM unless the alums tell them. Offhand, I can only think of one person who went into rad onc, and I don't know if he did Holmann.

The other thing to consider is that a significant number of CCLCM grads from the first two classes went into clinically oriented specialties like surgery and surgical subspecialties, which generally don't have formal research track residencies. So obviously these people cannot do a research track residency, even if they're planning to have a research-oriented career. This is the category I fall into: I'd definitely be interested in doing a research track residency if I could, but I'm not going to have the option. A lot of my classmates are applying in these kinds of clinical specialties as well, so same thing.

I'm still out of town on my away rotation, but when I get back in a couple of weeks, I'll ask around and see if any of my IM-bound classmates are planning to do ABIM. It's a highly unscientific informal poll, but it's better than the noninformation we currently have. Also, since you're interested in ABIM, you might find this website from the physician scientists forum useful: http://homepage.uab.edu/paik/rr.html

Patience, my friend. I am the only CCLCM student posting here who has been in medical school for longer than a couple of months. And even I am still learning to navigate my way around the vagaries of the residency application system. 😉

I agree with all of the above.

A few CCLCM students I've run into so far have expressed interest in doing a gig in an educational institution and going hybrid clinical/research. But CCLCMer is the true font of knowledge of all things College and the secrets therein. 😀
Just when I thought this pressure cooker of a rotation couldn't get turned up any hotter....now all of you are making demands on me too??? 😛

And it seems CCLCMer's coming back in a week or so - what day shall we set for the Eggplant Potluck I, 2010?
I'll be back in the Cleve at the end of next week. Are you guys going to be around for Labor Day weekend?

And what's more, how do we FIND all the SDNers who haven't posted in ages in order to invite them? I could always send the listserve something like

I think we know who all of the CCLCM posters are in real life, so there won't be a problem from our end. But pretty much the entire CCLCM first year class posted on SDN last year, so you should probably just spam all 32 of them.

checked status page and it says they are unable to offer me an interview. the least case could have done was send me an email.

While I was able to find a host for my CCLCM interview, I haven't been able to find a list of student hosts for my UP interview. I looked at the list of 3rd and 4th years, but nobody specifically offers hosting, and most specify that they are unable to host. Anyone know where there might be more information on student hosting for this program. Thanks!

I think it says that list will become available in late August.

Sooo...is the end of October considered "late" for interviews here if I got an invite yesterday? The 25th and 26th of October work best for me because I work full time, am traveling from the west coast, and don't want to have 3 weekends of interviews/traveling in a row (which leaves out September and earlier in October). Any thoughts?

pansy. schedule asap.

haha jk! hm, that still seems pretty early in the season, just after the magical october 15th. weigh the cost/time/r&r from traveling then versus later.

:luck::luck:
congrats!!

I knew that you apply around the end of the second year of residency for the Holmann Pathway, but I thought you applied to the research-track ABIM pathways right from the beginning. Me thinks I need to do some more research (pun intended)!

Heh, it seems like with each passing day, the application cycle is slowly wearing down my patience. But thanks a lot for taking the time to respond to my questions. I really appreciate it! It seems like the more I learn about this school, the more I'm falling in love with it. 😀

I wanna marry this school 😀

and i got an interview to CCLM today :O So excited!!!

I think you should interview when it's convenient for you. But in answer to your question, no, October is not late. In fact, it's really early. I didn't interview until late January, and I was accepted to both programs.

I knew that you apply around the end of the second year of residency for the Holmann Pathway, but I thought you applied to the research-track ABIM pathways right from the beginning. Me thinks I need to do some more research (pun intended)!
Looking at the website I linked for you, it seems that when people join ABIM differs depending on the program. I see that some say PGY-1 and some say PGY-2. Again, I'm not sure if any programs have people apply for a research track while applying for residency, but I don't think so.

That's definitely something I didn't consider before. Thanks for the info!
Yeah, it's kind of interesting that so many people go surgery over medicine. I think it might be in part because this program has more of a clinical research bent compared to an MD/PhD program, and maybe also because CCF is such a surgery powerhouse.

That'd be great if you're willing to ask around!
Will do.

Oh boy, you are in big trouble if you are this inpatient in August!

But seriously, it's a long year, so pace yourself. You'll do a lot of hurrying up and waiting, and it can't be helped. But there's no better feeling than getting that first acceptance and knowing that no matter what, you are going to be an MD. 😎

As for questions, I'll do my best to answer them. I think I already said before that I can answer any questions about the CCLCM program, and also about clinical rotations for both programs. (We do our rotations together.)

I wanna marry this school 😀

Awesome, congrats!

That's actually pretty interesting that a lot of people are going into surgical fields; maybe there are a bunch of engineers who like ortho or something?

Haha, my comment was meant more as a joke but you're right. Definitely need to make sure I pace myself.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond! 🙂

Thanks, Seven and CCLCMer 🙂

Went with Oct 25/26...otherwise it would have been four weeks in a row...ugh.

Anyone else going Sept 16, 17th? Its so much cheaper to split a shuttle between 2-3 people. I'm flying in the 15th and out the 18th and it would be fun to have someone to scope out the city with.

Wish I had the invite to split the shuttle fare with you...if I hear anything you bet I will let you know!

Congrats--hope it all works out and best of luck with Cleveland!

Cheers

Placed on hold for UP.

Do people ever get placed off hold? Should I be writing an update letter to them now?

Agh, sorry to hear that Avoid... 🙁 Now I am getting panic seizures every time I check the Case status page. I don't know how Hold works at Case, but I hope they still interview you!

I don't see how an update letter could hurt you. I feel that there's a better chance to represent yourself well in an update letter because you can pick the topics you talk about.

Avoidthetiger, sorry to hear that. Do you mind me asking when you were complete?

I was complete on 8/9 and am starting to get worried

Ive been complete since 8/4 and they havent even started to look at my app. They do not appear to be going in strict chronological order.

~pokes head in o.o~

Wow- this thread seems to be booming.

Those of you with interview invites CONGRATSS!!~~~~

Those of you still holding out- don't worry. PS: I saw this asked a couple times BUT I know people who did not interview until like Feb. and got accepted to both UP and CCLCM- that being said, do try to schedule your interview at the earliest avail. time 🙂

Those of you who were not offered an interview 🙁 I'm sorry- I'm sure however, that you will get an amazing opportunity elsewhere. Good luck this cycle!!!!~~~~

On hold too for UP 🙁 From what I've heard it is still fairly possible to get an interview since Case rejects people outright at this point too? Can somebody who actually knows what they are talking about confirm this? 🙂

the OH Connection from the airport to campus/hotel. Its $45 round trip for one person, but two is like $56 so it cuts the cost down alot.

Cleveland does have a public transit system although its pretty limited. It called the RTA or the rapid to pretty much everyone in Cleveland. The red line goes from hopkins to pretty close to Case. I am not sure where your hotel is but its worth taking a look.

http://www.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&...se+western&ttype=dep&date=8/23/10&time=8:27pm

Its only like a $1.50 and the last time I took it (five or six years ago) they were still giving out Susan B Anthony dollars as change.

whhhhaaaa? Just take the train - $2.25 a ride. Get off at University Circle. It's about a 40 minute to an hour ride depending on the time of day... but the shuttle is going to be atleast 20-30 minutes, so the shuttle doesn't save you too much time. Call a taxi to meet you at University Circles - I'm a fan of Ace taxis - for a quick ride to the hotel... if it is too late or too long of a walk. The train is very nice and very safe -- I have ridden it late into the evening (even at midnight - by myself - and I'm a girl)

edit - More info: There's only one train line that connects the airport to CWRU which is the redline.. so you won't have to change trains. Additionally, the RTA schedule is also extremely accurate, so just determine what train you most likely will be getting on when you arrive at the airport and from that determine when the train will be at the University Circle stop so the taxi can get you. If you are staying at the Intercontential Hotel, I would recommend not walking and taking the taxi only because that area is not always the safest (especially lugging a suitcase).

MICHfootball - I was complete 8/3.

anyways, need to start writing an update letter. tons to tell them 🙂
