I'm just guessing here but I would say nay to a dog...and "maybe" to a cat. I don't really think it's fair to a dog to spend so little time with them. Maybe you'll be there enough in the first two years...but 3rd & 4th probably not...and residency...I would guess definitely not (it's a 12-15 year commitment). If you have an SO or a family member nearby...that's a different story. However, I'd definitely be interested in hearing about any med students who have gotten a dog and made it work though.
I agree with all of this. If you're going to live alone, don't get a dog, both for your sake and for its sake. Even if you're going to live with someone else, still think twice about it, unless you're absolutely positive they'll be responsible and you have backup plans in case neither of you can be there. A cat is a lot more reasonable to manage when you have the kind of irregular schedule that med students have, but it's still an added responsibility.

If anyone's interested, my landlord has several apartment buildings in Cleveland Heights and is reliable as far as taking care of maintenance problems goes. (I lived in the same place all five years.) I'd be happy to give you his contact info.

Oh, and that would be TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!!!!!!!!

Howdy,

Any updates on when the holds will be sent to wait list 😀 or bunged to the dust bin?🙁

Thank you!
The wait list should come out in the next couple-few weeks. Christian apologizes that it is taking a bit longer this year, but it'll be soon. It seems like each year is a little different.

If we are planning to attend Case, how long do we have until we have to withdraw from all other schools? I thought the deadline was May 15th, but the AAMC recommendations say otherwise.

9. By May 15 of the matriculation year (April 15 for schools whose first day of class is on or before July 30), April 30 for MD-PhD programs, each applicant who has received an offer of acceptance from more than one school or program choose the specific school or program at which the applicant prefers to enroll and withdraw his or her application, by written correspondence delivered by regular or electronic methods, from all other schools or programs from which acceptance offers have been received.

Since the first day for case is in early July, do we need to send withdrawal notices to other schools by April 15th?

May 2!

"MULTIPLE ACCEPTANCES: We are aware that many applicants will receive more than one acceptance, and understand that making a final decision regarding matriculation can be difficult, as many factors can impact the decision-making process. Our office is prepared to be as helpful to you as possible, and we ask that you not hesitate to contact us if we may be of assistance in this regard. Our deadline for accepted applicants to decline other acceptance offers is Monday, May 2, 2011. Since our classes begin in July, the AAMC Recommendations for Medical Schools allows us to request an earlier notification date. Please review the AAMC Recommendations for Applicants to understand your responsibilities in this portion of the matriculation process. For those few individuals who continue to hold more than one acceptance after this date we reserve the right to withdraw our offer of acceptance. Please notify us immediately if extenuating circumstances become present with regards to this deadline."

It's because I'm ugly, isn't it? I knew it.....🙁

It was really fun to see many of the candidates this week back in town. I hope you guys enjoyed your stay and we were able to answer your questions. If you guys need to get in touch with anyone or need further questions answered, drop me a line. 🙂

Congrats to those accepted to CCLCM!!

I can't find average acceptance data for CCLCM anywhere. Is there a MCAT score I should be aiming for when I take it in June (other than as high as humanly possible lol)? Just wondering! I would really like to go there. I (will have) a Ph.D. and am planning to do clinical research but want to be a practicing physician too. Undergrad GPA was 3.72. I think my science GPA was 3.65? Just wondering what sort of MCAT to shoot for?

39T seemed to work. Good luck!

We are part of Case (we really are) - you will not find any (real) published stats on our program as separate.

In general, numbers good for either of the other two Case programs (MSTP or University Program) are good guidelines for the CP program as well. We are all family here! 🙂

That being said: higher = better. ;P

Ok, obvious advice aside - we truly look at all applicants as individuals. It is more important to have a good "Fit" with our program. If you are interested in becoming a physician investigator, browse our webpages, this forum, or ask us questions. Write good essays, and...that's about the most generic advise I can give you, right?

Thanks for your help! I am very glad to hear that about CCLCM. I took a look at your MDapps. You were a non-trad, too...very cool!🙂 I guess I will be aiming for a mid-30s MCAT! My life will be put on hold until mid-June, it looks like. 🙂

If I end up here I have a dog people can rent out for the afternoon if they need their puppy fix haha. I'd be coming with a significant other, otherwise I agree that it's far too big a responsibility.

But he loves people and we could use the help tiring him out!

I second this. I will be bringing my Shepherd/Husky rescue with me to CCLCM who will be freely available for stress-reduction therapy.

I have been having some difficulty finding places to live (he is about 50lbs). I've been looking in the Shaker / Cleveland Heights area. Does anyone have any reccomendations for places that allow pets of this size?

Have you checked out this place? I'm not sure if they allow dogs that size but it looks like a nice place.

Have you tried searching Craigslist and checking the "dogs" box? That'll only turn up places that are OK with dogs, though I've noticed that a lot of apts require a pet deposit, which is basically a month's rent, on top of the security deposit.

A pet deposit isn't as big a problem (usually/hopefully it's not that much) as his size. I did check the dog box on craigslist but it doesn't filter for size, and it seems like most places will allow up to 35lbs but nothing over.

Any comments from second lookers? 👍 👎 I figured this thread would be lit up by now. Still thinkin it over perhaps?

If you mean from the CP... second look was amazing, the current students were amazing, the future classmates were amazing, the faculty was amazing, the program was amazing and I will be releasing my other acceptances this week.
Is that well-lit ? 😉

In my history with looking for places with a large (~80 lbs) dog, those that list size are often negotiable, even if they don't say so. I'd suggest calling the person and asking if they'd accept your dog. It is definitely silly but you might also draft and offer a "pet resume", which I've found is a somewhat recent trend that highlights how non-aggressive/friendly/non-destructive your dog is with references from friends and past landlords. This will probably also put the landlord's mind at ease that you're a responsible owner.

No no no, you're doing it wrong. You're supposed to say that it was terrible and that no one should go there, so that I can get off the hold list.

My apologies.

If it helps, I spoke to a current first year who said that about half of their class was from the hold/waitlist. :luck:

Now that the CCLCM folks have had their turn, is Case ready for the UP kids? I'm planning on awkwardly steering every conversation towards SDN so I can figure out who's who. 😛

Maybe we should have code words...so we can recognize one another. The goal: Use your code word if we ever have to do that "introduce yourself and say some interesting thing about yourself" thing. My code word: Platypus

Last year's interviewees used "eggplant" which is a bit easier to work into conversation than, erm, platypus.

EDIT: vc7777 beat me to it

speaking of eggplant I was in Cleveland over the weekend and saw this...

It was at fishers restaurant in Peninsula.

I actually live there. No dogs allowed. From what I've seen, most apartments in the area won't allow dogs, especially ones that big. Your best bet is probably to rent a duplex with some classmates or a condo.

just got alternate list... it actually came sooner than i expected , seems like they accepted 30 off it max and 6 min in the past few years... im expecting the list to be hundreds of applicants long. has anyone gotten a reject/no alternate after hold?

I have been placed on the alternate list as well! Congrats to all those also invited to be on the alternate list! Its been worth the wait.

I got on the alternate list as well and have the same question---
I wonder how long the alternate list is?? Good luck to everyone🙂

Haha...fair enough...that word would be for my specific "signal"...not as a catch-all ...I have my ways of getting it into the spiel...but yes....in general would be difficult : )

I just got the alternate list email as well. I have no idea what it means about my chances other than they aren't zero.

I got the email for the alternate list as well, who knows what the chances are, but I would also imagine the percentage of people who post that they got rejected would be low compared to the percentage that get accepted, so who knows... hopefully its not that long 🙂

How do you figure?

I was one of the first people notified and I was rejected; I just assumed that since some applicants hadn't received an update yet, then the admissions committee might be sending out the updates in waves (first wave = rejections; second wave = alternate list). I was really just attempting to be optimistic for everyone else since I'm marvelously fcked. 🙂

Yes, eggplant is the code word.
I will be at the Gala welcoming you guys, representin' a bunch of student groups, stylishly sporting a subtle eggplant pendant necklace and a pink blouse. Now I know for sure that you'll at least recognize me 😀

On it!!! Whoop!!!! Still in the running for UP!

Congrats everyone!

About the alt list:

It is not "ranked."
They know everyone who is on the list, and when spots open, they fill them.
The length of the list varies. I have no idea how many are on there. It's not enormous or anything. But if you are on there, congrats!
The # taken from the list REALLY DOES vary from year to year.
There is a decent # of students from the wait list in my class. Exact #s are never available.
But students can still be accepted up until the day classes start, if spots somehow open. They WILL fill the class.
Spots do open late in the season prior to classes starting, sometimes, if someone drops from Case after getting off a waitlist elsewhere. (A silly choice if you ask me.)

May will be here soon! 😀

I'm having a really hard time selling Cleveland to myself. Do any current students know people who are involved with classical dance or fire performance at Case?

How is the nightlife in Cleveland?

I am not applying for another cycle, but I completely feel you. I feel like Case and CCLCM would be my two top choices for schools if they were in any city but Cleveland. Location is the only drawback I see for them though, at least from what I've been able to research.

I couldn't agree more! I went in fairly sure I would be attending and I left knowing that I will definitely be attending.

I had a similar feeling before the revisit but after a 2hr Lolley-the-Trolley ride through Cleveland I now hold a different outlook. I think the negative stigma attached to Cleveland is a remnant of the 60's-80's when the city was more rundown. My parents still call it the 'mistake on a lake' because of the river fire in '69! Since then, they've really cleaned it up. There is something to do for everyone from parks if you love running to a large art/music scene. It looked like there are plenty of places to go out and have a good time as well. Bottom line: (as many current student told me) don't let the city be the deciding factor. Cleveland is far better than its image makes it out to be.

Wow, miss a day, miss a LOT! The good news? I'm on the alt list.🙂 The bad news? I heard they put the ugly people at the bottom!🙁 No worries though, it's all good and I still get to hang out here for a few more fun weeks with all the cool kids!😎
