Congrats! DC-Hanover could be dangerous in December, when snow is very likely, and coming from LA you probably have no experience of snow driving. I'd recommend taking AmTrak or GreyHound from DC to Boston's South Station and switch to Dartmouth Coach in the same building. It would take about 11-12 hours in total, but is worth the few extra hours.

I'm from the DC area so I am used to snow driving (just not northeast-calibur snow driving 😛), but that is a good point...clearly just a year in California has made me forget about the snow issue. I was going to have someone else make the trip with me, so two round-trip tickets would end up being a little pricey... I could just suck it up and go by myself.

Soooo I just got an interview invite to DMS. Huzzah! Problem is that I'm coming from Los Angeles and Hanover seems like a huge pain to get to.

Has anyone had to not accept the dates they offer in the email? They want me to come mid-December but that's not at all possible for me. Plus I work full-time and am almost out of vacation days, so the fact that they only interview on Tues/Thurs kind of sucks (oh well).

I'll be in DC for two weeks around x-mas...has anyone made the DC-Hanover (or similar) drive? It's like 9 hours and would probably require my renting a car, so I'm not sure if it's worth it. Another option is seeing if they'll let me visit in Janurary and fly to Boston then take the Dartmouth Coach. Any others who had to travel from LA to Dartmouth? Thanks 🙂

You can request other dates if those don't work for you.

If you're coming up from DC in December I wouldn't drive (SNOW!) but I would either fly from DCA to MHT (cheap, direct flight) and then rent a car and drive to campus, fly into BOS and take the Coach or take the train from DC to White River Junction (10-15 minute drive from campus).

Genius. Thank you. It never occurs to me to fly out of DCA because IAD is 10 minutes from my house, but hoooolllllly crap is it cheaper. So would snow still be an issue if I'm renting a car to go from Manchester and back? I suspect the northeast is farrrr better about clearing up snow than DC is.

It's almost entirely interstate highway between the airport and Dartmouth and they're REALLY good about cleaning the roads here (I'd rather get a foot of snow here than an inch of snow in Portland, OR where I'm from). So, renting would probably be fine.

rejected today 🙁 was complete on 7/14. I have an awesome Dartmouth track jacket that I got from my aunt when I was there for my cousin's undergrad graduation....it makes me sad to look at it. oooooh well, can't win them all.

best of luck to the rest of you! :luck:

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anyone that applied to DMS was an engineer (Biomedical, Industrial, etc.) and what school you are from. Does having a bit lower GPA from an engineering school factor in at DMS?

It may, but there is no way of actually knowing. I'm a non-trad bioengineering major from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I faced the dilemma of "your GPA is good for engineering (3.61), but lower for pre-med".

Having said that, I did get an invite to Dartmouth about a month ago scheduled for the middle of December. I like to say my application is well rounded (included 4.0 in my masters) to compensate for my engineering GPA.

Who knows though in the eyes of admissions. Good luck to you!

Oh okay. Thanks! Great GPAs 🙂! I know how hard engineering is and I hope they take this into account. Did you do well on the MCATS to boost your chances?

Does anyone have any suggestions for traveling from Dartmouth to Yale? I have my Dartmouth interview on a Thursday and my Yale one on a Friday. The Amtrak train unfortunately leaves the White River Junction late in the morning and Greyhound will also not work based on the schedule. I've considered getting a rental car. My interviews are next week, so I hope that snow won't be a problem. Thank you!

Take the bus to South Station in Boston and then take the Amtrak to New Haven from there.

Or take the Dartmouth Coach to New York City or Stamford.

Lots of options.

Great! Thanks for the tips!

Is there going to be big snow in mid january? I just got invited and am thinking about flying to boston (from LA) then use the buses. Does the Dartmouth coach go directly from the airport? Will I be able to wear my skirt suit??

Congrats on the invite. When were you complete? I've been waiting forever to hear something from them...

There will most likely be snow on the ground in January but it's impossible to tell if it will snow when you're here.

The Coach goes leaves from the airport to campus every two hours from 8:55 am to 8:55 pm.

A skirt suit might be a little uncomfortable in January (although I've seen days in January where it gets up to 60; but that's unusual). I guess you could wear tights, boots, gloves, a hat and a coat and be okay. It'll really depend on how cold it is. Just check the forecast before you come out.

Any other engineers out there that want to share their story of getting accepted or invited to DMS?

Yes, nothing unbelievably awesome, but strong.

yay!!
invite.
question: is taking the vermonter amtrak train from NYC up to DMS feasible?

I take it up from DC (about five hours down from new york) to Hanover all the time. It's definitely doable (though maybe not advisable for an interview since the ride is pretty long).

the amtrak drops you off at white river junction at around 7. you'll have to take a cab to hanover from there.

I'm in the same situation...travelling from LA in mid-January. I was hoping I'd be able to travel from DC in December instead, but alas. If I decide to go, I'll almost certainly be wearing a skirt suit with stockings. I'm sure it'll be cold, but meh...I'd rather be cold for a few hours than drop a bunch of money on a new suit.

I'm more worried about being able to find a flight out on the day of the interview that will leave late enough for me to take the Coach to BOS :/

Pretty close to the same here...

Is everyone sure no news is good news for DMS, and they don't silently reject?

I called the Admissions Office today and the lady said they've been sending out rejections/offers for interview/acceptances as those decisions are made. She said you're notified as soon as they reach a decision.

So I'd say no news is kind of good? Because good news would be an invite.

Haha that last part made me laugh.

Thanks for the info. It's good to know that no news isn't bad news lol

so dartmouth doesn't have a habit of dragging people along in limbo until April?

i'm curious about this as well. i've been complete since july with no correspondence from the school. i know they've rejected people. so i'm wondering whether i'm actually ever going to hear anything positive....

I was in the same boat and absolutely could not find a flight. Eventually resigned myself to staying an extra night. It was totally worth it though--I got to really check out Hanover and I didn't have to worry about rushing off to the airport after the interview.

Accepted!! Awesome personal letter from the Dean! Good luck everyone!!:soexcited:

Does anyone know if the online status of those rejected changes?

Congrats!

Could you tell us when you interviewed and where you are geographically so we can get an idea of when to expect a possible letter ourselves? Also is there a post-marked date?

-Thanks

Thanks! I interviewed third week of october and the post-marked date is nov 9th (i have been traveling and did not check my mail until today!!) The decision turn around was two weeks post interview. G'luck guys!

Well that sucks because I interviewed first week of October. I'm guessing my score wasn't high enough to get accepted right off the bat. Though I guess physicsnerd said they don't make decisions necessarily in order of interview. This waiting game sucks.

Congrats! I hope I get some love from Dartmouth too! I interviewed the last week in October though. Do you guys remember if they said that they review for decisions every other week or every week?

I just got an interview invite today!! I'm so excited, I had given up hope and was sure that the e-mail was a rejection, but nope to my surprise it was an interview invite!!! 🙂

So I'm not exactly sure how available late flights are for you but I had to fly out after my interview and wanted to take the Dartmouth Coach to BOS. I asked the interview coordinator if I could plan my interviews as early as possible (they are between 1 and 3) and she said it was no problem. I was done at 2:30 and caught the 3 pm bus to BOS and made my flight. It's definitely worth looking into! saves time/money!

is it too early to send them a letter of interest? i interviewed early october and was thinking of blending it with an update letter...but don't want to annoy them since they said they are pretty careful/ frugal about giving out early acceptances

any thoughts? thanks

Once your batting average score has been assigned, nothing you do (including update letters or letters of interest) will up your chances until you are put on the waitlist.

Does anyone know what percentage of traditional students (i.e. straight out of college) are admitted to DMS?

I love how your 3.61 is "low" even though it's an A- average and engineering to boot! In my opinion you don't need to compensate for your grades. I'm just a lowly undergrad though so I don't count.

This varies year to year depending on the applicant pool--I'm a 2nd year and our class is a mix of folks. I'd say maybe 1/3 directly out of school, 1/3 1-2 years out and 1/3 3 and more years out.

Hah, I wish others would share your optimism. However, I was just at Ohio State for an interview and my interviewer understood that my GPA was good considering my undergrad major. Fortunately there are admissions members that side with us! 👍

how does dartmouth notify u of the final decision post-interview? is it normal not to have heard back since interviewing in early september?

Snail mail. It's normal. Most decisions go out after december.
