Called and set up an appt with an admissions counselor for next week so I could at least hear from someone other than a secretary (no offense to them). Its a phone appt since they're renovating Fesler Hall and not conducting on campus meetings at this time (per the admissions website).

Seriously, no word at all and its May 16? They can't be accepting students not on the waitlist at this point, right? All I'm expecting now is a letter saying I'm waitlisted...

The saga continues.

btricycle, I wouldn't worry yet. They have until June 1st to let people know. I know of people last year who didn't get on the waitlist until the last week in May. As for acceptance, the class is full so they aren't accepting anyone else. As for us waitlisters, we can't get too excited about the people withdrawing. IU accepts more than the 328 student class. Therefore, the people withdrawing are bringing IU closer to the 328 they are aiming for. But don't lose faith, hopefully they will start pulling people off the waitlist by late June. That's when they started last year. This process is killing me, can't wait for this to be over!

Those people you know who were placed on the waitlist towards the last week of May, were they eventually accepted? I'm just wondering if the waitlist works by the principle that people who are waitlisted first are placed towards the top of the waitlist and people waitlisted later are towards the bottom of the waitlist.

One didnt hear until end of may and she got an e-mail rejecting her. However, she was out of state. So she moved to Indy and got accepted this year! The other didn't hear until May 24th and she got accepted to the Northwest campus on July 23rd. The thought about people hearing about waitlist early being placed early is not true. We are not ranked. The waitlist acceptance process is the same as the normal acceptance process. The commitee talks about us and reveiws us and places people to fill the withdrawn spots. This is just my knowledge from previous applicants and from the 2015 IUSM facebook group. So technically, all waitlisters have an even chance. So again, don't lose hope. As of last year people were taken off the waitlist at the end of June, beginning of July and end of July. There were one or 2 that got Indy at the beginning or July. Some people lsat year got worried that they weren't being pulled off the waitlist at the end of May. People thought that since the deadline for students to decide was May 15, then schools would go to the waitlist. However, since schools over accept it doesn't quite work that way. I'm trying not to worry/think about being pulled off the waitlist until the end of June. I'm assuming if I haven't heard by Aug, to give up haha. So far withdraw total I know about is 5. Let's keep em coming. 🙂

Okay. Thanks for the reply. 🙂

Hey guys,

I was wondering if there was any correlation between when people applied and when they got their interviews. Was applying to IUSM by mid October too late for an acceptance considering average stats?

Could the people who made it on to the waitlist please share their stats and when they applied and got interviews? Its really difficult to guage who IUSM accepts and at what time. I'm sure interviews play a big role too.

Thanks!

It doesn't matter unless you did early decision. I applied Oct, interviewed Jan and was waitlisted in May. Timing of turning in your app doesn't matter as long as it was before the dead line. I think Early Decision people kind of have a leg up, but I'm not positive.

I think it does matter but just not as much as your saying. The earlier you apply the more leg up you have on other ppl. I applied to a school late last year (january) and was waitlisted; then I applied again this cycle in july and got accepted in their first round of acceptances. I applied to IU in july, interviewed september, accepted November.

It does matter, unfortunately. I interviewed in August and they didn't get to my application for review until December/didn't start offering spots until winter. So, take that how you will.

The only problem is that I am taking the August 23 MCAT, which means my scores aren't available until late September. Would you guys suggest that I apply before receiving my scores? I do know that the committee doesn't look at the app until everything is available so perhaps it would only be beneficial since the verification process would be complete and the app can move forward as soon as the mcat score comes in. I definitely want to apply this cycle. I'm taking my time with the mcat so i can do as well as possible the first time, since my gpa is a little below avg. I know that ideal time to have everything in is by late july. I just don't know what should be done in my situation. There probably is a higher rate of acceptance for earlier interview dates/application submission with average scores.

Appreciate any advice/ input!!!

DO NOT wait till you have your MCAT scores to apply. Definitely turn in your primary asap and then update them as you receive your scores. Like you mentioned it takes time to get your transcripts and letters and such transmitted to AMCAS and then verified.
Your MCAT date is pretty late and not sure if moving it up is an option but If you feel that you will use all that time productively than leave the date and just try to do your best.

Get your app submitted into amcas AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. It will take amcas some time to process it anyways so do not wait for your scores to get posted, otherwise you will ultimately get your app submitted really late (like mine was, as I made this mistake with my test being on 8/19).

So what is the most ideal time for submission? I am studying for the mcat along with completing the app, so would like to keep a good time in mind to submit it. Perhaps end of july? I'll work on it a little daily along with mcat prep.

It is KEY to have your app submitted as soon as possible -- I echo all of the people who have made this recommendation. I had my app submitted in the middle of June, took my MCAT at the end of July, and scheduled an interview in early Oct. -- I was accepted in mid-Nov with a 29 MCAT ...had I submitted in Aug or Oct, I would have been waitlisted or rejected, no doubt. You HAVE to submit early if you want any reasonable chance of getting accepted -- there are just too many people vying for admission into these schools.

Besides the time spent on the personal statement, how long did it take for you guys to complete the app? Does IUSM have secondaries or anything else after the primary app? I will probably just list IU when I apply, and then add other schools later after getting the score. Could that work?

Thanks!!!

Its been a few months now, but I think you can easily fill out the entire AMCAS application in one day not including the PS. The grades and experience sections are time consuming and tedious but not really difficult to fill out.

There is no "official" secondary for IU, If I remember correctly you just fill you an online application on the IUPUI website. It is completely painless and there are no essays or anything so it is pretty quick and easy.

If I was in your shoes I would personally apply to more schools right from the get go. Most of the schools just send you an automatic secondary application as soon as they receive your AMCAS and most of these secondaries tend to be time consuming and tedious (usually 3-8+ essay type questions). I'm sure you have heard this already but filling out your secondaries on time is also extremely important and they tend up pile up very quickly depending on how many places you applied to.

Thanks so much for the info! Really appreciate it! What other schools did everyone apply to? I have below avg. gpa and am instate, so IU seems like the best shot. Hoping to get a 30+ mcat.
Any other suggestions? Goal is to apply by the end of June. Hopefully will have started on AAMCs by then. Still have to write the PS. It would help if you guys could offer some PS tips or what worked well when you got to the interview stage.

Good Luck to everyone who is still waiting to hear back from IU!

For the physical science section on the MCAT my experience was that it was much harder than the AAMC practice tests. It was very heavily math based and there was one free-standing question asking about a law which did not appear in the exam cracker chemistry book. I was a bit irritated by that question but fortunately I had remembered it from chemistry. So the moral there is that just because it did not appear in the prep books doesn't mean you won't get a free standing question on it. Many people I've spoken with agree with me that it's much more difficult on the actual exam than on the practice tests. I know many people that received scores which were 2 to 3 points less than on their practice tests for that section. Most people got similar scores for the biology section.

For my interview I went to my schools career center to discuss some basic things about interviewing. I think it was helpful. Though the interview preparation with them really deals with people who are doing job interviews and was not made for medical school interviews I still found it very useful.

ACCEPTED!!

Hi everyone! I've always wanted to post on here! I was waitlisted May 6 and had a phone appointment with director of admissions today. I was about to ask her about reapplying, when she told me I had already been accepted and placed at the northwest campus! Should get the official letter by Monday! Good luck to everyone still waiting! Hopefully more will get good news on Monday!

I also got an email that I am on the alternate list on May 6th. Good news to know I am not denied, but now the waiting continues. Congrats to everyone who has already been accepted from the alternate list.. I hope that good news keeps coming to us! From what I have heard, more than 50% of the alternate list is usually accepted. Not giving up hope yet 🙂

For those of you that found out you were accepted, was it via email, phone, or regular mail? Thanks!

Congrats to those have been accepted from the alt/wait list. Still waiting here. Meeting with admissions tomorrow, so we'll see where that goes.

Found out yesterday, Indy campus. I really hope those of you waiting get good news!

And so the waiting continues. Again, how were people notified that just found out? When they say we will be notified by June 1 does that mean a letter could be sent on June 1 or WE WILL KNOW SOMETHING by June 1?

The e-mail that was received after the file was complete stated, " Everyone will receive a decision by June 1". My interpretation of that is that you will know something by June 1st because you will have received it by then.

I think this is correct but I also think they consider "You are waitlisted" to be a decision.

Some "final" decision. Sounds like a woman....my final decision issssss Maybe if enough people better than you decide not to.

Did waitlist acceptees have any choice in what campus they were assigned to? What criteria does IU use to accept some people off the waitlist?

FINALLY got an email. The admissions committee did not recommend my acceptance. Good luck to all still waiting. I'm just glad I already had another plan set up and ready to go.

accepted off the waitlist a few days ago. haven't seen the letter yet because i'm on vacation in mexico but got an email from financial aid congratulating me on my acceptance. i called the admissions office the next morning to confirm and they told me i was placed at the bloomington campus. it was the middle of the road choice for me but i'm trying to stay positive. i've just never been there and know nothing about that campus, so let me know if you all have any information! i'm just super pumped i got accepted - especially with my mcat score and especially off the waitlist so soon! good luck to all those still waiting!

Do you mind sharing your mcat score and gpa. i had a mcat 27 Q and gpa 3.61, science gpa 3.59
During my admissions appointment they said I prob won't get pulled off the waitlist b/c my mcat is too low. Since you made a comment about your mcat I was just wondering what your stats were. I'd really appreciate it.

I had a phone interview to discuss the status of my application and they told me then. A sincere "good luck" to all of you still waiting.

sure. i had a 27 S, gpa 3.98 and science gpa 3.91. i also have 4 full years of work experience as a nursing assistant in a pediatric icu, which i did all throughout my time in undergrad. i graduated early this past january. i applied in november and interviewed in january. i was super worried because of my mcat score but i knew that if i got in it would be because my gpa is fairly high and i have a lot of good experience. best of luck to you!

Could people who got in please share their gpa, mcat and when they submitted their application? It would be very helpful!

There are other factors besides GPA and MCAT scores used for comparing applicants. Comparing just a GPA and MCAT score is not necessarily a good way of predicting acceptance into medical school. If anything, it will just create unnecessary stress.

Agree to disagree. GPA and MCAT are 80% of the equation. Having a 27 and 3.5 all but eliminates you, while a 30 and 3.9 almost guarantees you a spot. Its the most accurate predictor of where everyone stands at this point, assuming you didn't fall asleep during the interview.

Accepted! Indy campus. best of luck to everyone still in limbo, I know it is terrible.

Agreed

I hear South America has great med schools and I could use a roommate...

I would have to disagree. I am a very strong believer that as much as the school wishes to "keep its numbers up", they are also becoming more and more aware of the fact that good "numbers" does not always produce a good physician. I was accepted with a 28 MCAT and a 3.5 GPA. The rest of my application was full of experiences (study abroad, medical missions trips, personal world travels 🙂), and a well written personal statement that altogether, I believe helped set me apart from the rest. I am not saying that MCAT scores and GPA do not matter, I am only stating that from what I have observed in my case, and in the case of many of my friends, there is more to the decision than some magic "equation".

I think we are on the same page. I completely understand that an application "full of experiences" is desirable. Congrats on getting accepted. I <3 Magic...and Equations.

I have waited and waited and waited and today, I GOT MY LETTER!!!! Before I got any email. Indy campus too! I am over the moon and so thankful.
