Yay interview Invite today!

finished secondary on 11/10 or something

However I can only sign up for a friday date and they state "Mondays and Fridays are reserved for applicants traveling from East of the Mississippi. Please do not sign up for one of these slots if you do not meet this criterion. Failure to comply will result in the cancellation of your interview."

Ideas??

I apologize for not being clear. There is only one date available for interview and it is on a Friday.

Dear mdeast,

Do you know what kind of scenarios are presented in this MMI format or how many stations interviewees rotate through? Is there any point where we would get to talk about "Why Stanford" or discuss our specific application in this setup?

Thanks!

To be honest, I have no idea.

what? There is only one interview date available now? All others are filled? I'm screwed.

Interviews extend for a while and most have not been given out. I doubt the office has gotten much past scheduling the 4 interview days before the end of this quarter (i.e. through December).

While I saw it was mentioned that pre-interview updates are generally a bad idea and will not be considered, I just had a primary author paper accepted to a journal and was wondering if this is something I should, or even can, update Stanford about. Considering that one of the questions on the secondary specifically asked for publications, and at the time it was pending and I couldn't list it, whether I could somehow update that part of my application? Thanks!

Something baller like that is totally cause for an update letter...

Haha, thanks! I'll probably send one, I don't think it could hurt. I just hope it's considered... and that I am lucky enough to get extended an interview!

Tried it. They didn't accept the update. But they were nice about not accepting it and I got an interview later on so I don't see how trying to send it can hurt your chances.

So, my amcas was verified 2 1/2 weeks ago and I hadn't recieved a secondary from here yet. I emailed them and got an email back saying they had emailed it to me the day my amcas was verified. For whatever reason, I never got it. 🙁 I have all my spam filters turned off so nothing goes into my junk folder so I dunno what happened.
Anyway, they resent the email today, I filled it out and submitted today but I"m not holding my breath. I know they're slow compared to some schools but submitting 2 weeks before their deadline can't look good, despite the fact that this is my #1 right now.

Sigh. Internet fail.

Hi Steph, I just saw this and I have almost an identical scenario like you. This leads me to believe this was a problem on their end: Verified mid-October, never got an e-mail invite to secondary. Spam filter was off but I still went through my inbox/junk/all other folders again several times and there was nothing. They manually sent me the application after calling them. Hope they realize we didn't sit on the app extra long...

Has anyone else noticed that the interview section of the website is down? I was invited on Saturday and the website was working this morning. I can still log into the site.

Yes, I saw that the interview scheduling was down. I called but didn't get a call back until I sent an Email also. They can schedule your interview over the phone if you want. As of yesterday, the earliest interview date was 1/10/11

Best of luck

Not to sound like i'm on a high horse, but I'd like to remind everyone that we signed a confidentiality agreement and hopefully we will all be responsible in honoring that. For those of you who will be doing the MMI's in the future and are seeking information: my advice is not to worry, it is pretty awesome and fun.

We did? Was that in the fine print when we scheduled the interview date or something?

for those of you who have interviewed, did the admissions staff say how many people they are interviewing and how many people they are looking to accept including from waitlist this year??

interview please stanford I love youuuuu <3

everyday I come home to the mail, glad I haven't gotten a rejection letter yet...

does anyone know if they are giving out interviews in any particular order (ie completion date)

Finally got my Pre-interview Rejection in the mail a few days ago. Complete around 9/9/10. Good luck to everyone still in the running!

Got a rejection letter as well.

Best of Luck to all the Rest of You.

I absolutely love Stanford. I am very happy here and I wish everyone the best in the process! I can answer questions as well 🙂

I recently had my Stanford interviews. I agree that you should not worry about them. There are no right or wrong answers and they seem to evaluate how you think and analyze very specific scenarios. The key is to handle them just like during any other interview (but be quicker - you only have 8 minutes ) State your case, stand by it and be able to defend your reasoning and your position. That is all. But more important, don't lose your cool and don't get into an argument with any specific interviewer - if he turns out to be an *******. My group seem to have had "one" and everyone was really annoyed !! (Some people left with a very bad taste at the end of the interviews which was a shame).

And as far as being pretty awesome and fun??.....naaahhh. This is n=30 (all the kids who interviewed with me)

Regarding any "sour tastes", I hope any MMI interview problems don't deter you away from the positives of Stanford. It's definitely a "different" format, but judge the school more on the rest of your interview day than the actual interview itself. Hopefully the rest wasn't too painful 🙂

Anyone know how long are they going to keep inviting for? I was complete mid-august and have yet to here anything

I was complete early August and haven't heard anything

Fortunately, my group interviewed at the end of the day. From the interviews we went straight into the "Debriefing Session" where students could be fairly open about expressing their frustrations about specific interviewers/stations.

The school is great, the students are very laid back and happy and the administration and faculty really cater to them. The campus is very suburban and even though is integrated with the other schools, I really did not get the same "campus feeling" as in U Penn or Pritzker ( I disagree with you here, mdeast ). Maybe I have been interviewing too long, but I did not get a WOW effect either.

For those interested, we were told that they have received over 6200 applications and they will be interviewing 450 students, accepting about 180 for a class of 86. Each interview day has about 30 kids. They will begin notifying acceptances in mid January, but they will have some scheduled interview dates in February.

Can anyone speak on whether the MMIs at Stanford are similar to the ones at UC Davis/ UCLA?

I'm going to try and not draw any direct comparisons between schools. But, I worked out Penn Med for 2 years and if you'd like to digest Stanford/Penn differences, feel free to PM me.

In most regards, I think the "one campus" community is better here than almost anywhere else I interviewed. Almost every student takes classes in other schools here, you have free, unlimited access to do so, and it's highly encouraged and easy to do (Wednesdays off, very little required class time second year). Many other schools give you this option...but it's not built into the curriculum, you are limited in your options if you don't want to fork over more $$$ to take outside classes, or you may have to travel far to go to another campus.

Given the location, there is also a huge on campus graduate community. I think this is really the distinguishing thing (and benefit) of a suburban campus (though, there are alternatively negatives to the suburban identity as well). This tends not to exist as much in urban campuses as most graduate students are scattered across the city in their living space. This is the one thing that is admittedly hard to see on interview day, but much more apparent once you get here. Most of the 1st and 2nd year class lives on campus, where you'll be placed with graduate students from all of the other schools at Stanford. My roommate is a law student for instance. There's a lot of grad community events as well- potlucks, ski trips, hiking outings, whale watching, running clubs, dinner clubs, etc. There was a DJ-ed Halloween Party for all grad students, graduate speed dating events, even Med/Business/Law school alumni events off-campus in SF- all things I've participated in just in my first quarter. A classmate of mine is working on a startup project with a computer science PhD student to design new iPad apps for medical students. They met after being roommates their first year. I've had friends who have started dating business students they met in the campus gym. It's these sort of connections/friendships that I think can really be fostered by the fact that interdisciplinary work doesn't just exist here (but is also ENCOURAGED), and that many graduate students live in close proximity to each other and attend many social events outside the academic realm.

I didn't really find this sort of "campus" community as strong (or easily available) at any other medical school I interviewed at. The great thing is...it's there if you want it. If you don't, staying within your med circle, going off campus (even living in the city) are all options to pursue your own social life too. As with many things in life, graduate school is what you make of it.

Mdeast,

I tried PMing you, but it doesn't look like it sent to you cause it is not in my sent box. Let me know if you didn't get it.

Thanks for all the insight!

Anyone interviewing on Monday (the 13th)? I've never been to Cali and am going to be in Palo Alto starting Sat afternoon and have no friends to hang out with anywhere near there. If anyone is around and wants to grab drinks/food Sat night or something, PM me.

It'll be like practice for these MMI blind date things they're putting us through 😀

You can't practice for them! Just hang out in San Fran on Sunday, go to Union Square, hop on a trolley and chill.... Best of luck! 🙂

booo!👎 the fact that you already have some great acceptances should lessen the blow though.

Oh totally, to be honest I'm not bothered by it at all. Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to interview there. But I saw the writing on the wall.

Anyway, best of luck guys!

No rejection letter here yet, but it looks like I should be expecting one soon. I'm guessing the mail's a bit delayed what with Snowpocalypse here in Minnesota. As it turns out, snow tends to slow the USPS down when there's 20 inches of it.

Ahhh, so many rejections going out. =( Has anyone gotten an acceptance? I know phone calls started going out around this time last year...and I'm not sure if I imagined this, but I remember hearing during the interview day that we might be getting decisions before Christmas. :xf:
