Does anyone know if UI has patient simulators/mannequins for 3rd and 4th years??

From what they said in the interviews, it sounds like they use simulated patients -- trained actors from the ages of 13 - 70ish -- and I believe some of the sessions are recorded for you watch after the examination. However, I am not entirely sure if 3rd/4th year students use these?! I know that the M2 that gave us a tour said that she has examined the simulated patients before. I thought that M3s and M4s were supposed to be doing clerkships around the state of Iowa. I could be completely wrong though...this is just what I understood from the info. during my interview day. 🙂

They do have mannequins for 3rd and 4th year, but they don't have a simulation center.

Thanks for the info Icacer and sbhatt! I noticed that schools trot interviewees through their sim center if they have one and will tell you how useful they are when it comes to feeling comfortable with certain procedures before doing them on actual patients. I suppose it isn't absolutely necessary given lots of schools don't have them.

Do you think they will send the mass "final pool" emails out today? :scared:

I got the email today that they are putting me in the final pool 🙁

Received an acceptance email yesterday, interviewed 12/20, OOS nontraditional applicant. Good luck everyone!

OOS, final pooled. I'm not really sure how we should feel about being in the final pool. I loved the school and the surrounding area so I hope March brings better news :xf:

...via email today.
Interviewed mid November, OOS, 36Q, 3.9

I have appreciated everyone who takes the time to post. Good luck.

I was just final-pooled today as well 🙁

The email says that we may submit additional information in support of our application until Saturday. Does anyone know if this includes letters of interest, or only update letters about activities?

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks so much!!

Ok, bear with me... I am confused as to how Iowa's process works.

Is everyone that interviews either accepted or final pooled? So the final pool consists of everyone that interviewed but did not receive an acceptance?

They only want updates and letters of recs. I called their office today and asked the same thing.

Final pooled here as well. Hmm.. I'm wondering the same thing about who gets sent to the pool. I hope the pond is relatively small.

correct, nobody is rejected until march if you have interviewed

Another pooled applicant here, and it seems that there are a lot of us. Does anyone have any information about final pool numbers (ie. how many acceptances they are yet to give out)?

Well considering next Tuesday is February, I guess today was THE day for being Pooled? Or I'm just telling myself that to make myself feel better 😛

Add one more to the pooled table. Though i was very shocked to hear back so quickly since I just interviewed last week. Crazy... Good luck everyone, time to continue playing the waiting game...

They said at my interview that approx 30% of acceptances go out in the final pool. According to my math, that leaves 30 spots for in-staters, since I hear they don't over-accept in-staters. Not sure how many spots they give out to OOS applicants. I'm assuming the final pool is everyone who has interviewed who hasn't been accepted yet, so just subtract whatever they interview each year (not sure what that number would be for OOS) by the number of acceptances already given.

Received this in the mail today up in Wiscansin:

"I regret to inform you that the Admissions Committee has voted not to admit you to the entering class beginning in August 2011. This decision was a difficult one and ..." and on and on.

 No me importa mucho. I am happy with this cycle. I hope that everyone else that receives this letter was successful with another school! Congrats to all the people still in the game here as well 👍!.

Best,

I was wondering the same thing and found this pdf on the Carver College website...I attached it here (but I've never attached things to an SDN post, so hopefully this works!) It says that in 2009 they interviewed 265 in-state applicants, offered admissions to 128 (so they over accept...), and 97 applicants actually enrolled.

At my interview they said that they take about 30% of in-state applicants from the final pool. I guess based on that, they must send out 38-39 acceptances for in-state applicants. The remaining 90 or so are from rolling admissions. I am not sure how the wait-list comes into play with all this though!

SO, if you are final pooled -- there are still ~40 spots open! 🙂 :luck:

From the UI Carver secondary application: "Our interviews for the Regular Only program begin in September and end in late January. The earlier you submit your credentials, the earlier we can review your file for interview selection."

Good Call. Guess it's over for me then. Good luck to everyone else.

Anyone know who the dean or associate dean of admissions is? I searched and couldn't find out.

The Dean is Paul Rothman.

Incidentally, today I just got a "Welcome from Dean Rothman" email (accepted back in November). Basically just said congrats. I thought it was a little strange.....

Final pooled here as well, at the beginning of Jan. I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.
From what i heard from the admissions staff and from other people who have interviewed, the final pool may be smaller then you would think. Remember a sub committee are the ones to choose the applicants to send to the final committee, for either an Acceptance or final pool decision. Well i kno at least 2 people who interviewed the same day as me, who got neither an acceptance OR final pool email. So that could mean they were never put before the final review committee at all...Meaning a possible smaller final pool...maybe?

Good point! I both optimistically and logically agree 🙂

That would make sense. I would venture a guess that they shoot for a specific number in the final pool for in-state and out-of-state applicants, and until they reach that, they will not send out post-interview rejections. That is purely speculative, however.

Has anyone heard anything today? Does the committee meet on Tuesdays usually? I called the office yesterday and they said that the committee had one more meeting until the completion of the rolling phase. I'm wondering if that was today?! I interviewed last week (24th) and have not heard anything yet. :xf:

Pretty sure they are done interviewing, if someone as more info about this please share. But I haven't heard either way on my app and can't get any more info when I call other than check our online applicant center. Is there a possibility that I could still get an interview even though its already Feb, or does this just mean my rejection later is somewhere between Iowa and my mailbox right now? I am OSS/32/3.82....late submit.

The committee did not meet this week due to the weather. They still have one meeting on the rolling phase left---the person I spoke to could not say what day but she hinted that it would be sometime next week. Apparently, at that point they will fill the remaining rolling spots and send out acceptance letters + an acceptance email from Kathi Huebner(sp?).

She said EVERYONE else (anyone who interviewed this cycle and still has not heard anything) will be sent an email next week notifying them that they have been moved to the final pool. Then we wait until March 18th...

I interviewed on 2/04 and I suspect that was the last interview day. I am OOS, 3.3, 38.

I lived in IA for a few years and my parents are alumni of CCOM, is it fairly typical for OOS applicants to have strong ties to IA?

I had never even been to IA before my interview 😀

Cool, I was noticing how many OOS applicants had stellar stats so I am hoping that my ties to Iowa will be helpful. I was really impressed with UofI and how friendly everyone was so it is very high on my list.

I feel for you DrYack, I was #43 on the University of Washington waitlist (IS) last year and they ended at #42. I hope things work out for you this year.

Last year they accepted 21 off the instate wait list, I know as I was number 23.

anxiously waiting for March 18th. I can totally see myself in Iowa later this year.

I received a email from certiphi today because it said a school had decided to accept or waitlist me. From deductive reasoning, I have concluded it has to be Iowa. But would they have waitlisted people yet? Also, has anyone else received this email today?

Thanks!

Don't mail Paul Rothman. He's the Dean of the Medical School. The whole shebang. He's not the Associate Dean for Admissions (who works for Paul).

Kathi Huebner is about as close as you're going to get to a Dean of Admissions.

Best of luck to you all. I interviewed on Monday and was accepted on Wednesday. Space will probably open up soon for those of you in the pool/waitlist, so just hold on. 🙂

Snail mail rejection today

I thought we (those that are final pooled) weren't going to hear from the school (good or bad) until mid march?

I am guessing those that did not receive interview invites are now being rejected. I wouldn't think anyone that made the final pool would hear anything before March.

Right, sorry for not specifying. Pre-interview snail mail rejection today. 🙂
Likewise. I really enjoyed the photo-copied letter on plain paper...I guess it beats an email, but come on, as much as we pay in app fees they could at least have the decency to send correspondence on official letterhead. 😕

I was wondering if there were any current Carver students reading this thread, and willing to share their perspective. You can't gleam everything from an interview day and the CCOM's website.

I'd be open to any information about your perception of your school, but some ideas for starters:

  • How receptive have you felt the administration is to fixing problems?
  • How would you describe your class (e.g. the M2 class) to your parents?
  • Did the structured curriculum in M1/M2 leave you sufficient time to learn on your own independently?
  • What is your opinion of the clinical years - esp. the 3rd year curriculum? Are you pleased with how rotations are structured and graded? What is your impression of the role of M3/M4s on the wards - interaction, or just shadowing and scut work?
  • How helpful is the school in the residency application process? How does the school collect info for the dean's letter? Do you feel the school does a good job in exposing you to all the specialties out there?
  • Have you felt the methods of assessment to be fair and helpful in your learning (i.e. tiered instead of Pass/Fail)?
  • What do you and your classmates do to relax in Iowa City?
Appreciate anything you'd be willing to share. Thanks very much!
