UK has the most amazing faculty and staff you will ever find. The student affairs ladies (they are all ladies) are like family members. They are just loving and friendly and always have food. Dr. Cheever and Dr. Griffith (who are the dean of students, and basically handle everything student related) are the most welcoming, understanding, genuine people you will meet.

I could probably go on. The truth of the matter is, if you are in between two schools, talk to a couple med students from each. Judge which one seems happier about their choice. It won't even be close.

BTW, PM me if you have any other questions, want to talk about this or whatever. I've taken up too much space on this forum anyway!

Thank you so much for all your help on this forum. Your insight into UKCOM is very valuable. I'm glad that you found a school where you are happy at. 10 hours of sleep in med sch? Amazing!
Please keep writing...I don't think anybody is complaining.

No dress code. Wear slacks and a polo or something like that if you want to look nice. No ties or anything like that. The whole thing is pretty casual. You'll listen to a few speeches, a panel, a talk on financial aid then recess into a room to meet other students, buy tshirts (if you want), meet faculty and staff, and EAT. Also, a few of us old folks will be there to talk to you and assuage some worries and answer questions. Who knows, I may even show up... free food after all!

Thank you! I'm looking forward to meeting everyone.

Can anybody tell me what UK's med students are expected to wear to class? Is there a dress code? If not, what do people wear generally?

Has anyone received the letter from UK yet? I have been waiting for it forever

My "official" letter actually went to my permanent address (my Dad's house), which is weird because everything else that they send to me has come to my apartment. I just sent in my acceptance form the other day. I did get the scholarship form email and the invitation for the financial aid/reception for incoming Fall 2011 class on January 8.

Thanks a bunch, man. I hope so too. The only really big thing is just me looking for a change of scenery. I'm a Louisville undergrad, and I like it and all, but I want to experience something different. There are lots of little reasons why I liked UK over U of L (at least from what I saw on interview day), but enough little reasons that they add up to make UK a better fit for me. Anyway, here's to hoping we'll be classmates in August! And congrats to everyone else who's been accepted!

You're in the opposite boat as me. I'm a UK undergrad. I like both schools and am having a really tough time deciding. What did you like about UK that made you want to come here?

The block scheduling is the best thing that as ever happened to me. In the past two years I have managed to live a VERY normal life, and I get 10 hours of sleep a day as needed. I feel like the blocks are designed to really give me the opportunity to learn from the best and dive in to each subject and really get a firm conceptual hold of it.

The patients we get at Chandler are among the sickest you will find anywhere in the country. And as both an L1 trauma center and academic medical center you get to see patients from all walks of life and in all stages of disease, both common and rare diseases.

ICM (how to be a doc class) gets better each block. I feel very well prepared for 3rd year and I really have enjoyed the process... it was stress free and fun (really).

My class is very giving and friendly. We aren't too cliquey and despite a handful of gunners, we all share resources and try to help each other out. This is just something that does not happen at other medical schools.

I really feel like I am getting the better education of all of my friends at other medical schools. The opportunities for involvement, the clinical involvement and teaching early, the facilities, the support staff and the students really make this place better.

I can't overstate how important the curriculum is, and the support that the dean of students and student affairs provides. I don't know of any other school that actually listens to students and changes both the curriculum and faculty every year. The recommendations we made at the end of M1 were fixed for the next years class.

Thank you so much for your insight! This really helps. I'm deciding between UofL and UK. I was a UK undergrad and never actually expected to have to make a decision, let alone have it be this difficult!

I liked the buildings better, they seemed more up to date. And Lexington in general just seems like a cleaner city than Louisville. I really think the biggest reason, though, is that the grass is always greener on the other side. I like Louisville (the city and the school), but I kind of want a change.

I'm really surprised that we haven't received more information about the Jan. 8 session. For example, parking, dress code, etc.

FYI, I have just emailed Robin Rankin to cancel my interview (scheduled for 1/11/2011) and withdraw my application. I got into one of my top choice programs, so I decided it would be best to allow someone else to take my interview slot.

So if you have a late interview, and you live nearby, you might try calling or emailing to see if you can get my spot.

Best of luck to everyone!

thanks for the info! my status changed to "interviews to be scheduled" in late november, and i finally got my interview date this past week - for mid march!! 🙁 really sad about this, because i know by then the class will already be full and i'm sure i will be interviewing for an alternate spot. i hope they haven't re-filled your spot for next week already! i emailed robin to ask, just in case. 🙂 :xf:

so, bluebird's interview spot got filled already by the time i emailed. If anyone else cancels/withdraws please PM me and let me know! I desperately want to get in to see them sooner than mid March...

ACCEPTED!!! I got the call this morning.

I was put on hold post-interview; was told I would be re-reviewed in April. Robin told me the committee met to review those put on hold and decided to admit some of them. Good luck to everyone else this may have happened to.

Wow...this is great news...congrats!

Congrats, ajdoc!

I've been on hold since I interviewed in August and was also accepted last Thursday!!!!!! I'm soooooo excited. I haven't been on sdn since I interviewed because it made me too nervous (haha), but I can't wait to meet all of you next year! 🙂

I am interviewing here next weekend, does anyone have any advice?

IN! :soexcited:

Anyone else get a call Thursday?

I got a call on Thursday as well...I'm IN!!! While I was obviously really excited, this makes the UK vs. UofL decision (which I've been repressing until now) real... I've read everything everyone has said regarding the two schools, but I'm still really hung up on the decision. Based on my interview, I liked UK a lot more, but I'm interested in pediatrics which makes UofL the better choice...anyone have any advice or is there anyone that wants to make this decision for me? Lol

hey! congrats! i know you haven't heard from u of l yet, but at least you've got uk! i'm pretty much your opposite... haven't even interviewed at uk yet and won't til march. 🙁 did they say anything about the number of seats in class?

Thanks you all! And congrats to the other recent acceptees! lol

Hey hey, littlestar! They didn't give out any specifics, just that there were some spots left (as of Jan. 29). BTW, they have kept the class open for longer this year by requiring at least 70% approval from the committee for an acceptance.

Good luck on your interview!

Hi guys,

I was put on hold in August but just received an invite. I am OOS but I have strong ties to UK. I am extremely excited but I am not sure about this- I was told by my colleagues that any interviews to UK after December usually means it is for a waitlist spot. Now if anyone could answer:

1) Is this true?
2) Does the waitlist move?
3) Should I go? =/ Consider: I do not live close by 🙂. airfare) but I do have relatives in the area 🙂. accommodation)

It is a bittersweet feeling as this school was definitely one of my favorites.

I think this was true in past years, since you used to only need a majority vote for acceptance, but now you need a 70% vote, which makes the class fill up a little slower. That said, we're pretty far past December at this point, so I think it's likely that you'd be interviewing for a waitlist spot. I've been on post-interview hold since October and haven't been keeping up with this thread as much, so if I'm wrong, someone let me know.

I agree with your thinking. Do you know if the waitlist moves signficiantly? Is there a ranking order?

Thanks for the quick response!

I believe UK ranks their waitlist in March. You'd have to check last years thread to see if the waitlist moves significantly if no one else chimes in, because I'm not really sure. I would imagine it probably wouldn't move very much since a lot of the in state students who get into UK will go there for financial reasons. The biggest portion of people who would be accepted and decline are probably in state students who head to U of L over UK, but I'm not sure how many of those there are.

If you really like UK, then I think you should interview. You never know--you might get placed at the very top of the waitlist and get in come May. Or they might be filling the last of their seats and you could squeeze in sometime in March. The only reason I'd say to not go is if you've either already gotten into a school you like better/would prefer to go to, or if paying for airfare and hotel just isn't financially feasible. Barring that, I say go for it.

Hey hey, littlestar! They didn't give out any specifics, just that there were some spots left (as of Jan. 29). Carol only addressed it for a split second, but I got the impression that she was referring to the class size, as opposed to their planned overfill number. I could be completely wrong, though. BTW, they have kept the class open for longer this year by requiring at least 70% approval from the committee for an acceptance.

Good luck on your interview!

thanks! hope you hear back from u of l soon!

Interview today!
Hopefully my charm and charisma will hide the fact im OOS (just cause i moved to fl from lexington when i was 14... 🙁 )

They mentioned last week that this is the last adcom meeting where they will give acceptances out. The rest is for the wait list.

Wow. I wish you the best then. Hope you get a phonecall today or tomorrow!

got this email today:

"Thank you for your interest in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. We think it is only fair to tell you that, at this point in the admissions cycle, the 2011 entering class is filled and oversubscribed. All current class positions have been offered at this time.

We will continue to interview candidates through March. During this period, we will be offering selected applicants 'Hold" positions prior to the development of our alternate list. We do anticipate that openings in the class will occur later in the admissions cycle. In that case, we will begin to offer additional acceptances in May. Given the size and quality of the applicant pool, we think it is important for us to advise you of our present circumstances regarding available positions in the 2011 entering class at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. Unless you notify us otherwise, we will expect to see you on your scheduled interview date.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carol Elam
Associate Dean for Admissions and Institutional Advancement"

🙁

Well I just withdrew my acceptance, so hopefully they will offer an acceptance to someone else. Good luck everyone!

Littlestar, there's still hope. Many people are still waiting to make up their minds about where they would go. March and May are the months where people finally decide and spots open up at many schools. I think that more spots would open up at UK. Have you been accepted anywhere else? When is your interview?

thanks maiden. yeah, i think you're right, there will definitely be waitlist movement in a few months. I've been accepted at uofl (just attended their pre-orientation today) but i was so hoping to have a chance to experience uk, or at least have options, you know? what sucks is that they told me in november they would be scheduling my interview but didn't end up giving me an interview date until mid march! i asked several times if there were any openings to have it moved up, but haven't had any luck. i wonder if they rank the applications and decide who to give interviews to first, because they say the class is always full by late december/early spring and yet they interview until the end of march.

what's funny is that i was complete at both uofl and uk around the same time, but uofl has moved so much faster for me than uk...

Littlestar, if you are interviewing on the 13th, I will be there, too. I don't have high expectations, but a waitlist spot can still turn into a matriculation. Keep your head up, if nothing else you still have your acceptance at UofL, which is more than others.

i'm interviewing on the 12th! wow, i didn't know they were even doing interviews on sundays... they must really have booked a lot of interviews if they are even doing them all weekend. yeah, i don't really have high expectations at this point but i'm trying not to lose momentum. here's to staying positive for all of us. :luck:

I haven't heard anything back after my interview. Guess I'm in the same boat.
