I'm not sure if I'm just overlooking this info on the website or what, but does anyone know if the second class (2015) will be roughly 42 students as well? Or do they plan to increase the class size over time?

I can't believe how soon August 28th is...😱

Edit: Nevermind, definitely seems like it will stay 42/year.

The second class will also be 42 students. Our curriculum is designed with that number in mind. Also, for those who are asking, VTC is a private school for tuition purposes, and as far as I know there is no in-state preference. As was previously mentioned, 2/3 of the class is OOS. Good luck to those of you interviewing on the 28th; some of us will be there to greet you and answer any questions you might have! :luck:

Hey guys,

For those interviewing on the 28th..are you going to the reception on the 27th?? If so, what are you planning on wearing? Another suit or something more business casual?

I've been wondering this too! I have been debating wearing my second suit that day but with a more funky business casual top underneath it. Otherwise I can wear the dress that I have worn to a few weddings/nice events... but I always feel more comfortable in pants, so I am probably going with a suit. But I'm worried I'll be too dressed up then. soooo confused. BUT EXCITED! 😀

Haha exactly! I don't know if it will end up too dressy to wear another suit but I don't want to be too casual. Maybe I will call admissions and see if someone there might be willing to give some info on the dress code.

But agreed, so excited!

Unfortunately my flight is getting in too late for that... but hope the rest of you have a great time 🙂

Hi,
The reception on August 27 is designed to welcome you to VTC and to allow you some time to get settled before the interview day. There is no dress code. The staff will come in casual attire, and no one associated with the Admissions Committee will attend on Friday evening. Several members of the Charter Class have offered to greet you -- Please come prepared to relax and enjoy the evening. No suits.

If you have questions about any part of the admissions process to medical school (any school,) please call us directly.

We look forward to meeting you on Saturday, August 28.
Best wishes,
Office of the Vice Dean
Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine

I'm glad you all are so excited!!! We are excited to to meet all of you as well. I'll be stopping by on Saturday after your interviews to answer questions for students that you guys may have, so please come with some questions for me. You all will be my study break haha.
See you all Saturday, good luck, stay calm, be yourself, blah blah blah!!! 😀

Does anyone have an estimate of how much cab fare would be between the airport and school? And how long it takes to travel that distance?

I asked the hotel - and the lady told me it was $20 or less (it's been awhile since I asked her but it sounded really inexpensive to travel from the airport to the hotel - it might even be like $10). it's about a 12-16 minute drive from ROA airport to the hotel.

Thanks! Maybe if anyone else is going to the airport after interview day we can share a cab.

For anyone staying at Cambria Suites tomorrow night (or in the future). It looks like they will be starting there free transportation service from the airport to the hotel tomorrow. Or atleast, the lady hopes it will be up and running tomorrow -- it is suppose to be, but who knows.

If you are staying there tomorrow, give them a call and the woman will write down when your flight arrives for pick up. We will need to call them tomorrow morning to confirm, but it would be nice to save some cash if they do get it up and running tomorrow.

They also have free wireless and printing. It sounds like the best hotel ever! 🙂

Does anyone know if they have sent out their second wave of interview invites yet? Or has anyone arranged for an interview other than the one for tomorrow?

It is a pretty awesome hotel.

Got the first post-interview post...quite an experience today. Absolutely wonderful school.

I'm really glad you liked it here. The school is wonderful and the people in it are even better. I hope we were able to answer whatever questions you had. If we didn't you can always ask me or one of the students on SDN.😍 Hope you did well and good luck!

Now I suppose we play the guessing game of who everyone is, right 😀

I had some questions about the TCA cycle but your writing on the window answered them all. Thanks 🙂

LOL, glad I could help! 😀 We totally were not expecting that room to be part of the tour cause there isn't anything in there yet so we were quite surprised when you all walked in!

If you visited the library I was the guy with the really tight jeans and a creepy moustache. 😎

... you may want to keep the creeper moustache on the DL, you are going to scare them all away!!!

Agreed, absolutely loved this school. 😍 Would be thrilled to go here!

Big thanks to all the students for answering our questions, both at the reception and after the interviews! You all were such a big help and so welcoming!

Now we wait..

Had a great time during the entire visit as well. Was wondering if you could help me out with a bit of a conundrum. I forgot the name of the person who interviewed me for the standard interview part! I was hoping to send them a brief note of thanks. I dont know if you are allowed to disclose, but seeing as how there was only four, I am sure I could narrow it down if you know/are able to provide the names (goes for anyone reading this). If its against any disclosure rules, no problem at all, I will try to figure it out.

Thanks!

I had a wonderful time at VTC! The interviews were fun to the point that I forgot they were interviews... and now I am worried that I presented myself poorly at times. hmmmmm. oh well. Loved the new campus, friendly staff and students and the roanoke area. I'm really hoping I get accepted! Though I do want to hear how the first year ends up going because there still seems to be some kinks that needs to be figured out.

Has anyone been screened in for a secondary lately?

Interview invite today, sept. 25th interview date! Secondary submitted august 8th, complete by august 15th.

^same here.

so is the interview date pretty much set in stone? I don't mean to brag and wish the best for all of you, but i have an interview on the 10th/17/21st this month and tacking on this one on the 25th is going to be difficult financially. Is it the best bet to just call and see how scheduling works?

VTC only has a few interview dates this year. If you really can't go the 25th than try to reschedule. The interview dates posted on their website are for:
August 28, 2010
September 25, 2010
October 30, 2010
November 20, 2010
February 5, 2011

The cool library dudes 😎

Come to think of it, I think I saw maybe 10 male students and only one female :scared:

lol, there are only 12 girls in the class so it really isn't surprising you only saw one of us (me).

Mattatat: As for the interview, you can change your interview date, just call the VTC office of admissions and tell them about your financial issues and work something out with them. Congrats on all the invites though! Sounds like you are going to have your hands full for a while!

And putting the offer out again, my roommate and I are willing to be student hosts for you guys. We have a bed and a couch. Just as a side note though, VTC recommends a hotel in the area (read above posts) because they host a student meet and greet the night before the interview there.

Good luck everyone!

Hey Panda,

Any idea why the charter class is predominantly male? I noticed that our August interview group was mostly guys as well and was curious why that might be..How has it been so far being only 12 women out of 42 people?

What I do know is that more acceptances were given to female students. I'm not sure why the class dynamics turned out they way they did. I did notice that the first interview group was mostly male. Not sure why that is either. When I was waitlisted, Dr. Workman told me that they were working very hard at having an equal amount of female/male students... guess that didn't work out, lol.

As for being in a mostly male class, it really isn't so bad. I don't much notice the difference while I'm in school anyway. Everyone is more focused on working together and getting our objectives done than on forming cliques and worrying about being surrounded by guys all the time. The only time I do notice is during applied anatomy lab when we do physical exams on each other. You get buddy buddy really fast during that class, haha.

All in all, I predict that they will compensate for this odd ratio in the next class by accepting more female students. I think that there will still not be a 50/50 ratio, but it will be better. As for me, it wouldn't matter if I were the only girl, or it was only girls. I'm not easily embarrassed or intimidated (in front of girls or guys) and I don't much care about the gender of the person I work with as long as we work well together and get the job done right!

But, if you're a male, the prospects are so limited! 😱

So I know this was discussed for the last interview date, but are there any current V.Tech students who would be willing to host for the Sept. 25 interview date?

LMAO, You'll have to talk to the guys about that (but yes, some of the guys do complain). 10 of us girls are taken, either married or dating! So prospects very limited! But don't forget, we also have a class with the nurses and PA students... haha. Besides, dating someone within a class of 42 people will probably not end very well; never date co-workers or within your friend group are in the unwritten rules of relationships.
On a third note: a lot of the guys are not single actually. Many are married, engaged, or dating as well.
I'm very curious to see how the next class turns out... lol

The hotel also has a shuttle to the school and to the airport I believe as well. It is also relatively inexpensive because VTC gets a group rate there. PM me if you are still interested in staying with us though. (My roommate is a guy, just putting that out there)

That sound you hear is a thousand guys suddenly withdrawing their applications from VTC

But yes the Cambria Suites hotel (the one VTC recommends in their interview invite e-mail packet) offers a shuttle service to/from the airport. I think it opened up on August 28 (the first interview day) as AvoidtheTiger posted so we had some kinks on our day (I couldn't take it because my flight came in pretty late and there was some scheduling conflicts, but they should be fixed up by now). I took a taxi and it came out to about $20.

Knowing that about 1600 students applied for the 42 person class, about how many people were interviewed last year? And how many of those students were accepted?

My understanding is that there are only 5 large interview days with about 40 students each, meaning about 200 students were interviewed last year. Of those, I assume around half were ultimately accepted. I conclude that an interviewee thus has around a 50% chance of being accepted by the school, which is really good. Does this sound reasonable or does anybody else have further statistics?

Go Hokies!!!

So it looked like last time they sent out interview invites out all at one for the Aug date. Does this mean they're finished inviting for the Sept interview date? 🙁

I got my interview invite for August a few days after people on here started getting them so don't give up hope yet! :luck:

Is there a preference towards Virginia residents? Also, does anyone know if you can substitute the second semester of Organic with Biochem?

^i would like to know about the o-chem thing as well. Im on the quarter system and so we take two quarters general +1 quarter lab and two quarters organic + 1 quarter lab, i hope that qualifies or else i'll be going to virginia for no reason haha.

No preference for VA students is what we were told in the interview. If I recall correctly about 1/3rd of students from VA, 1/3rd from neighboring states, and 1/3rd from other places was the makeup of both the class and the applicant pool. At the interview there were people from all over.

Soooooooo, I got an email saying they were screening and to wait for a secondary. If I have not gotten a secondary from this school yet does that mean I am rejected and just have not been told about it yet? Has anyone gotten a secondary from this school recently?

how long have you been waiting? i waited about a week for the screen, but i think it varies a lot. it never hurts to call...

So I sent an email to admissions confirming my interview attendance. I didn't get a response, and every time I try to call Admissions, I always go to voicemail. People who interviewed the last cycle, did you ever get a response?
