Check with your undergraduate institution and see if your classes have been designated as having a writing component. When I was at UF for undergrad, classes that weren't specifically English/Writing but had a big writing component were sometimes given a "WR" for Writing Requirement. But not all of them counted as WR, even though there may have been weekly essay assignments.

no, no reply! i'm hoping some of my writing-intensive courses will suffice, but i submitted and am going to hold out on a reply before adding classes or anything if necessary.

don't they only check to see if you have all the requirements after acceptance... that's what i've heard from other schools

Just got a rejection e-mail. Ah, well. I was surprised it was sent on a Saturday.

It did appear on my online status. I didn't check until after I got the e-mail, but it was changed by the time I looked, at least.

My stats are mediocre. MCAT: 31 cGPA: 3.67 sGPA: 3.45

It was a long shot for me, so I was expecting this, but it's still a little disappointing. It'll save me the trip, though! Good luck to everyone still waiting, and wishing you all the best!

I don't know if this means anything AT ALL but I have not received any email as of yet. I was complete at BU on the 24th. I'm not really worried cause I feel like this is a big reach for me anyway..

Why do you consider it a big reach? You stats are in close alignment with accepted applicants.

I have no ties to the Boston area and I feel my clinical experiences aren't as good as MANY people on SDN. But thanks for the vote of encouragement! 🙂

Last year, it was very hopeful if you passed the 3 week mark. After 30 days they sent out an email apologizing for the delayed response due to the number of applicants. After that, interview invites started going out.

But, based on how much time has passed since you were complete, I'd suggest a congratulations was in order! :luck:

Lol thanks so much but I'm not going to think anything of it until at the very least I get through Monday and Tuesday. I got notified on a Friday and it could just be that they didn't get around to sending my email yesterday. Once again, thanks for the good luck! Makes me realize that a lot of SDN'ers aren't just pure gunners but have a lot of compassion for others!

ok so personal question:

should i focus more on personal growth or other skills? because i know i have less than standard grades but no particular reason for them (other than being a *****). should i just leave it as is and not talk about it in my secondary and address it in an interview if i get one? or should i address it now and not address other things i have learned?

in other words: address the bad grades now? or hope for an interview and address them later if need be and focus on another aspect (i.e. leadership) that wasn't made too clear in my other parts of my app?

thanks a bunch!

Focus on your strengths like you said, i.e. your leadership. They will have seen your grades, no need to remind them again, remind them of why you're great, don't give reasons as to why you're average. Of course have a good answer when it comes up in an interview, but I wouldn't dwell much on it in the secondary.
Just my 2 cents...

completed 6/29, rejected last night: 3.74/37R

Pretty disappointed, was hoping for at least an interview

With those stats, you will get in somewhere! Keep your head up and remember that the vast majority of this process is negative feedback. All of it won't matter when you get that first acceptance! :luck:

To those who recieved news/no news: did you guys write anything for the optional portions?

I did, I had some stuff that I didn't think fit well on AMCAS that I wanted to talk about. Also I was complete 6/29 and haven't heard anything yet, still at "complete" status. Not sure what that means... could be getting rejection very soon  but who knows

I'd love to have your stats 😀

But you will probably get in somewhere else!

Rejected this morning 🙁 on the day before my birthday too. Oh well, not very surprised. Complete 6/29, 3.9/31P. Good luck everyone!

Sorry to hear that 🙁. Plenty of other schools out there!

I was complete 6/30, so I am up for review soon it seems!

What exactly do you mean by hopeful? Like does everyone who passes the 3 week mark get an interview?

I don't know if everyone did, but if you go through last years thread, it seems as if no news was good news past the 3 week mark.
Perhaps it's just an initial screen, perhaps it means you'll get an interview, perhaps it's nothing... but it's hopeful. :luck:

So, on 7/6 I got an e-mail from BU saying that one of my LORs was not signed. My reference re-uploaded the letter to AMCAS on 7/8 and it is still not updated in the B.U. system about 10 days later... does anyone know how long it usually takes them to receive updated LORs?

Wouldn't hurt to call or email somebody about this. Perhaps they just haven't downloaded it yet?

I have called them and AMCAS. AMCAS confirmed it's been sent to all schools, so I don't know why B.U. hasn't downloaded it yet since all the other schools I applied to already have the updated letter. They said it can take up to 10 business days, so I'll wait a couple more I guess

Edit: Wow so they just downloaded it haha 😛 Thanks SDN 😉

Anyone complete on 6/30 hear anything yet? We have to be coming up real soon. So far, nothing, which is good I guess.

for the prerequisite form,
are we supposed to include the "optional" cell biology/genetics/biochem. semesters in the "required" biology semesters, so that some classes are counted twice??

Complete 6/23, have not heard back. Hoping this is a good sign.

Complete 6/22 - did all the optional essays and haven't heard a peep since. Here's hoping that the three week rule holds out, as I'm coming up on four.

I have this question as well. Also, how is everyone entering numbers in the Total Semesters column? Since my general chemistry and lab were separate courses (2045 vs 2045L) does that mean it would be 1 Total Semester or 2 Total Semesters? I took them in the same semester.

I'm also a little lost as to which category I need to add my graduate school courses to. Like: Foundation in Biomedical Science, Principles of Pharmacology, Systems Physiology and Phamacology, Neuroscience, and Neuropharmacology. Any suggestions?

Once all my letters were uploaded to AMCAS, just about all my schools showed they have received except BU, took them over a week to get it...Just be patient, should show up eventually, if you don't see it in 7-10 business days after it was uploaded, I'd start calling more..

Just curious, how does BU screen for the primary? It seems that people receive their secondary rather fast...

Has anyone gotten an interview yet? All i've been reading are rejections =[ this is kind of sad.. Good luck to everyone!!

No interviews yet, but the three week rule is holding true (so far).

Rejected late last night. Complete 6/29. All the more reason to get started on my DO secondaries.

Here is a clue about how the admisssions committee does reviews on applications:

1. Our first step each year is to establish a universe of academically prepared individuals within the pool of candidates who file initial applications with us. This year, it looks like we will be working with approximately 12,000 applications. The initial screening step is based largely, but not exclusively, upon quantitative data such as academic performance at the undergraduate, postbaccalaureate and graduate levels, MCAT scores, and academic rank of the educational institution(s). Various aspects of life history are also considered. In recent years we have had approximately 7,500 applications pass this initial screen and move on to additional review and consideration.

2. Next, we review the remaining folders in even greater detail, struggling to identify the candidates with special or unusual characteristics that suggest they may be particularly well suited to attending our medical school. Of the approximately 7,500 applicants reviewed at this level, we have capacity to interview only about 1,000, so we are forced to make many arbitrary and subjective decisions. Our focus is on a comprehensive, holistic evaluation of each applicant, incorporating academic and nonacademic factors in a highly individualized review. Once again, it is extremely unusual for a decision to be made on the basis of only 1 factor. Rather, these decisions reflect our sense of the overall portfolio.

3. After interview the folders are reviewed yet again, this time with the interviewer's report providing important, but not necessarily determinative, guidance in our final decision about acceptance. By this stage of the process each applicant folder has been scrutinized and discussed by no fewer than 8 members of the Committee on Admissions.

Interesting. Is this straight from the website?

I wish I knew if I was in the 7500 pool or the 1000 pool, but no news is good news.

BU takes a very holistic approach to their applicants. Statistics honestly do not necessarily mean everything to them. While good statistics will get you initial consideration, BU really values students who embody and ppreciate diversity and can contribute and fit in to a teaching hospital of Boston Medical Center which serves the lowest income population of Boston. They look for students who have demonstrated that they are committed to embracing this diversity, and contributing to it also (not necessarily racially, but you have to demonstrate that your experiences indicate you value these things). Keep in mind that BU students have the distinction of working at the city's only safety-net hospital, meaning that they must have the capacity and ability to appreciate the patient population they work with. Deans on the admission committee really want students who embody all of this.

^ I touched upon all those points in my personal statement and especially the optional secondary, and I'm sure 2 of my LORs spoke to my commitment to underserved communities. I'm surprised they list "academic rank of the educational institution(s)" as one of their selection criteria, seemingly above life history - this might have done me in. Oh well, it wasn't meant to be.
