Thanks for the clarification vc7777. I had gotten the impression there was more searching during the sessions from reading some med student blogs.

Can you describe what happens at the actual sessions themselves (some of this must be group specific)? Is the bulk of the session spent with individuals giving mini-presentations on topics from the last session's cases with a minority of the time spent designating learning subjects for the next session?
If not everyone handles every topic for the case, do you feel you know some topics better than others (the ones you present)? And if so, how pronounced is this effect?
If everyone researches every topic of the case, is the next PBL session more of just a confirmation and fact checking session? Maybe go over any problems people had with the material.

I really like the idea of peer teaching as I feel it leaves lasting memories and is good practice for public speaking. It's useful and fun!
Teaching was one of my favorite activities during grad school, and I look forward to this more collaborative style of learning. However, I'm very curious as to the specifics of these sessions and how they are made effective as well as how much flexibility there is in their form. I envision many ways this could be done: students giving eachother problems, students applying learned knowledge to a similar case, mini-presentations, or even mini- oral defenses.

would it be rude to call the cclcm and ask about my status? as in waitlisted, rejected...
Nobody is waitlisted yet. If you are rejected, I would expect you to find out soon via a status update. I am not sure that they will have an answer for you at this time otherwise. I might suggest you wait till the office is fully-staffed after the New Year. But to answer your question - it will not be inherently "rude" to ask about your status.

So if we are not rejected, we are just deferred until March, not wait-listed?

Actually, I vastly prefer my iPad, but I am not at CCLCM and am therefore not expected to generate a presentation for PBL.

It is convenient in some ways and inconvenient in others, though usually in ways I would prefer it to be inconvenient anyway. 😛

I also love the "handiness" of tablets (pun intended), but I need microsoft office, photoshop, illustrator, and the adobe suite to be truly happy. Multiple windows open at once is also a necessity.

I used to type notes for my students and draw in figures by hand back in the xerox days. I'm excited to see what you can do with a stylus, a search engine, a word processor, and an imagine editor.

I didn't say the iPad was all I had! I would be an extremely unhappy person without photoshop.

Also, creative suite is free for all case students!

WHAT!?!?!?! It's free!!?? How does that happen? It comes pre-installed? I have been a wedding photographer for the last 3.5 years and I just recently sold all my gear but I still love to use Adobe CS!

I personally do not suscribe heavily to the US News rankings as a meaningful metric for judging medical schools, but I was asked by a fellow pre-med if the Case ranking includes both the 4 year and the 5 year program? The question only seems to have any relevance because the programs are fairly different (which would be relevant for the peer/residency evaluations, etc.), in my opinion. Any thoughts?
It includes both. Case does not publish separate stats for CCLCM. Just FYI, the USNWR rankings are heavily reliant upon research funding amounts. So the main way that including CCLCM benefits Case's ranking is that the research funding awarded to the Lerner Institute at CCF counts toward Case's total research funding. But since Case has so much more research funding than CCF does anyway, I'm not sure how much of a boost that really gives to Case in the rankings.

Regardless, I wouldn't put too much emphasis on Case's research ranking by USNWR. If you want to do research in either Case program (or through the MSTP), you will not have any problems finding a project to join. At all.
To the CCLCMers:

How useful do you find the tablets during PBL? Do you vastly prefer them to normal laptops? Do you happen to know the make/models the school hands out now-a-days? Or how long the battery lasts?
I anticipate accessibility of information and streamlining ones search and sharing of it will make PBLs more useful and fun. I guess a more general question is what sort of technology or search engines do you guys find useful during these fast-paced group sessions?
Like vc7777 said, we rarely used them as tablets.

I was among those accepted to Case (UP) last Wednesday (interview 11/28). Save for the early start date, I love everything about this school, even the essay exams! Unless I get a full-ride somewhere or am blown away at my next interview, I'm pretty sure I want to come to Case next year. I was a little disappointed to not get an interview with CCLCM because I too was attracted by the free tuition as well as the stronger emphasis on research, but after reading some of the posts here, I realized that it would have been a difficult "fit" for me. I'm actually pretty glad that things worked out the way they did.
Good, I'm glad things worked out for you, too. Sometimes things happen for the right reason even though it doesn't seem like it at the time. When I applied, I really wanted to go to a certain school, and they were the first school to reject me. Once I got over the disappointment, I realized just like you did that it was not the best fit for me after all, and I was glad that I ended up at CCLCM instead.

Also, the latest Case newsletter does have the Second Look weekend date listed. It's scheduled for April 20 and 21, 2012. Perhaps it's different for CP though.
They're back-to-back on the same weekend.

Speaking of CP differences, would it not be better if the UP and the CP tracks were separated into different threads next year? They're rather different programs in curriculum, grading, people, and environment. Sometimes, it's a bit tricky to distinguish what info is for CP and what is for UP. Just a suggestion.
It does get confusing sometimes, but it's easier to just have one thread, especially since so many people apply to both programs.

would it be rude to call the cclcm and ask about my status? as in waitlisted, rejected...
No, although the waitlist won't be made up until interviews are done. So you are either rejected or on hold right now.

So if we are not rejected, we are just deferred until March, not wait-listed?
Right. You are either rejected or on hold. If you are on hold, that means no decision has been made about your app yet. The adcomm will review the people on hold again at the end of February and then make a decision about whether to accept you, waitlist you, or reject you. In the meantime, if you are on hold, unfortunately you will have to wait until interviews are done before you get an answer. Sucks, I know. 🙁

Does Case reject anyone post interview? It seems like everyone is either accepted or put on hold.

From the software center! Production premium, design premium, web premium...

We do, but like acceptances, you have to earn them.

To any current students:
What is the parking situation like at CWRU? Is it difficult, and is it expensive? I am looking at a house in Euclid and (since I would obviously be driving to school everyday) what I would expect to find with respect to the parking situaiton at the school and if it would be worth it. Thank you!

Any idea of what the acceptance rate is for the on-hold folks?

Do yourself a favor and don't look for a house in Euclid.

Consider Little Italy, Cleveland Heights, or Shaker Heights instead, unless you really, really want that East Cleveland feel...

I don't remember what the parking at Veale is, sorry. I think it was something like $700-$750/year up front, but I walk to school, so it's never come up for me. 😳

Do you recommend applying for an apartment soon for next year? I have never known this far in advance that I was moving somewhere and I would like to ensure that my then-wife (9 days!! :-D ) and I have a place secured that is close to campus so I can ride my bike and she can use the car for work. Any suggestions of average priced locations close to campus?

Question for any current Case students: how long is your Christmas break? I'm curious. Thanks, and I hope you're all having a great break. 👍

Per twitter: Since students are on break, the lecture hall chairs are being reupholstered. Say g-bye to the 70s orange!

Awesome!

2 weeks! Welcome to med school!

Also, new upholstery.😱

...either they've kept the seat portion or redone it in a similar orange... Or it is incomplete.

I thought it was two weeks! Thanks. Aren't you going to miss that 1970's charm brought by that shade of orange? 😎

Yes and no! Depends on how cushy the seats are! :d

Also, page 2? So close to the holiday? We're not having this, no.

At work. Bored. Waiting for my senior to send me home, but he's making me stay until the bitter end even though there's nothing for me to do. Sigh.

So, anyone want to chat with a bored resident who can't go home? .Or ask questions? Or tell me off? Whatever?

They're all 7AM-7PM; we don't have to do night float on this rotation. Of course, if we get a late admission, I sometimes end up having to stay later. But so far I've been pretty lucky. I think the latest I've had to stay so far was 8PM.

Where is everyone? Hope you're all having a merry Christmas or a happy Hanukkah and/or a fun Festivus. 😛

Completely not necessary to sign a lease now. This is Cleveland we're talking about, not NYC or Boston. There is way more housing available than there are people to fill it all. I started looking for apartments the week before school started, and signed my lease a few hours later. If you're the anxious type, then come to the second look, which will be in March or April, and spend an extra day or two to find a place.

Most people live close to campus, but if you're planning to buy, especially if you have kids, you may want to live further out so that you're in a more suburban school system. Popular places for people to live include Little Italy (walking distance of Case), Cleveland Heights (some parts within walking distance, all of it within a 5-10 minute drive), and Shaker Heights (not within walking distance, all of it within a 10-15 minute drive). Other people, as I said, live further out in the suburbs (Beachwood, University Heights), and there is also a group who live downtown in converted warehouse-studio types of places. If you live downtown, you can take the Healthline (eco-bus route) out to CCF or Case, which won't require a car.

I lived in Cedar Fairmount, which is in Cleveland Heights. It's one mile away from the Case med school, which is totally walkable, and 1.5 miles away from CCF. The other thing that is nice about Cedar Fairmount is that it is a mixed area with apartments and businesses. So you would have a grocery store, several restaurants, a Starbucks, dry cleaners, etc. all within a block or two from your apartment. Super convenient for a busy med student. If you don't mind being another mile out, Coventry (also in Cleveland Heights) is a popular choice too. Same kind of thing as Cedar Fairmount, with even more fun places to hang out. Shaker Square in Shaker Heights is a good choice too, for the same reasons, although it's pricier to live there versus Cleveland Heights. If I had stayed in Cleveland for residency, I would have moved out to Shaker Square.

Just discovered the sdn Android app! Pretty cool. I have been told that having a smart phone can be very helpful during med school because of the available apps. Can any current students comment on this? Thanks!

I definitely am not ready to sign a lease yet, but yea, I like to know what my options are right now. Some of the places that I've looked at online are the following: Lake Park Tower on 13000 block of Superior ave, Integrity in Shaker and Cleveland Heights, and Lewis Manor in Cleveland Heights. I will probably have to wait until we go out there for second look or maybe even just a few weeks before school starts, but thanks for the info. I will have a commuting bicycle and I plan on riding that.

Ps. Check out my new shirt that I made! :-D Since the bookstore doesn't have anything like this I had to make my own!

Yeah, my daughter and I carved it a few years ago.

OMG! Top!

Eggplant Carving FTW!

Hahaha, well that is pretty darn cool! I have a question if you don't mind. Can you please comment on the usefulness of smart phones while in medical school? Both clinical and preclinical years? I've heard mixed opinions on it, and any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! 👍

I would wait until you are settled at/on a particular school before deciding on a particular make/model of cellphone.

For starters, you may find there are discounts via your institution and preferred carriers that have better coverage or allow you to access your mail account more readily. For example, Sprint service is terrible at the Cleveland Clinic, and their (CCF) email has to be on an encrypted blackberry and you must purchase the encrypted BB through the clinic's perferred Verizon agent. Finally, CCLCM itself is now providing individualized G-mail calendar subscriptions for each student via our portal that can be easily accessed by an Android phone. Many in our class perfer the iPhone anyways...See what I mean? Sprint/Verizon/Android/BB/iPhone = Complicated - And that's just here and doesn't apply down the street at the UP even! :meanie:

When applying for residency, there is a good reason to have one (they often invite more people to interview than the total number of interview spots available, which means, neurotic e-mail checking to reduce the amount of time before you respond to an interview invite. :d)

whuuuuut?? you gotta be kidding me. sheesh... that's crazy. guess i'll look forward to the next hurdle of neuroticism after i get over this one 😕

Based on previous application cycles and statistics, does anybody know how many people eventually get accepted off the waitlist?

Thank you very much! I just got on Sprint and got a crazy deal on a very nice new Evo 3D HTC phone. As much as I love it, I am debating on whether or not paying extra for the data plan is really worth it or not. I know I could save a good bit of money and live with a cheap phone for the next two years and end up just fine. I just don't want to do that...

Anyway, thanks again for your advice. 👍

Hey guys. So I have an interview scheduled in late February! Super stoked! Will having the interview that late put me at a disadvantage? I know the school uses rolling admissions, so will there even be very many spots open?

You can call the admissions office periodically to try to reschedule your interview. If someone else cancels, you may be able to grab their day.
