If you go on hold, is this bad news? Obviously it means they weren't ready to offer an interview, but is there a (say 50/50) chance you could be offered an interview later on in the cycle?

What does the highlighted part mean?

I would understand the question if it asked us about the
"interpretation of results with respect to future studies."

This makes sense. I find that cancer is prevented by fruit, and then the next scientist asks "Which fruit?" or "What compounds in fruit?"

But I don't really get the question the way it is asked.

What are they asking?

I don't actually review the essays, but my guess would be that it just means you should talk about the significance of your results, and what they imply in terms of future work in the field.

Yes, there is a chance. If not, they could and would have outright rejected you.

We have discussed this several times on the thread, so I will be brief:

1) Stay within the limits
II. Do not repeat/regurgitate your abstract
c) Brevity is the soul of wit
- You can talk about mutliple projects, but I caution you to favor quality over quantity.
* Do not put references (just in case you were tempted to do so)

I'm sure it is some combination of the above - possibly strength, how early it is made available to the admissions committee (ie when you were complete), how long the reviewers who are supposed to read your essay sit on it, logistical issues, pure randomness, and whether one of the current students accidentally ate it and they have to print a new copy.

But either way, it is so multifactorial and variable that you shouldn't read too much into it - not as if you can do anything about it or that the process isn't anxiety provoking enough!

I remember hearing somewhere that trends show that double majors (i.e. science+something else) elicits an increase in basal body temperature with concomitant mental agitation.

...Would you happen to be a double major?

Are you talking in general or about our program? Can't say there has been any trend towards this that I have ever heard of.

The sad truth is that there are a ton of great applicants to ANY program at ANY medical school. It is tough for our primary application reviewers. I don't envy them. They spend an inordinate amount of time reviewing each application wholly before making decisions.

We are just reporting that most have at least one science degree in my class of 32. This should not be interpreted to mean we want people with multiple degrees.

You shouldn't feel that way. 🙂 I wouldn't infer that from that statistic, since I'd imagine the vast majority of applicants to CCLCM majored/minored in science to begin with anyway.

Right, I think the term is "referral bias", or "self-selection bias". You cannot look at the prevalence of science majors in the class without knowing
a) the prevalence of science majors who applied and
b) the makeup of the people accepted, not just the ones who showed up the first day.

I don't think it's as clear cut as that. First there's a difference between accepted vs. matriculated. As mentioned previously you don't see how many have a humanities degree also and there is quite a bit of applicant selection bias as well. While it seems like they count research experiences in a variety of fields, the sciences are probably going to have the best opportunities for undergrads to do research. That research requirement might unintentionally select for science majors with access to those opportunities.

I ran across this article which is very helpful for writing about research. I have altered it slightly to answer questions about writing the research essay for CCLCM:

The reviewers are probably successful, busy clinical researchers who will be reviewing the essay in time "borrowed" from other activities. Assume that the reviewers are intelligent, are savvy about research, have a broad fund of scientific knowledge, but perhaps have little in-depth experience in your area of interest. While the reviewers are probably committed to being thorough and fair, it is important to remember that they will often not be in your exact field and will be reviewing your essay in a few hours at the most. Given these circumstances, the urgency of focus, conciseness, conceptual clarity, and transparent language becomes apparent. The writer must help the busy reviewer understand the project by making its significance crystal clear, avoiding jargon and topic-specific abbreviations or terminology, and not expecting reviewers to search references. The essay should be completely self-contained."

Yes, but unless I'm not looking at the right place, it's the same status that only has the application completion date. All the correspondence sections are empty.

Well another week of nail biting, wondering, shouts of joy, and probably a few curses has come to a close. Congrats to all those receiving invites, I hope Case and/or CCLCM are everything you hoped for and more! For those still waiting, be encouraged, good news could be forthcoming at any time!🙂 And for those not receiving what they had hoped for, I'm sorry, but I think everyone finds that this year has a lot of ups and downs as you try and find your place in the medical school maze. Completed 8/8/11 here. Am waiting for the "We can't interview you," status to show up.

Even though I went here for undergrad, grad, and currently work here as a research assistant, I should have checked the MSAR before wasting 80 bucks because my MCAT blows.

Oh well, plus side is that I work 3 floors above (somewhat) the admissions office (passed it daily when I was a grad student on the same floor), and it's a bit funny to think that my application is being reviewed (and possibly axed) only a few floors down!

It really doesn't seem like I will be able to finish it by next week, and they only take 32 students per class! I wanted to apply, but it's getting a bit hectic with school starting and all (and yes, I thought about starting secondaries early, but I got very busy with research stuffs). Thoughts?

I'd say apply, by the end of next week. Give it a shot. Apply to both the CCLCM thing and the University Program--the secondary is 80 or 85 regardless (I forgot how much exactly) to apply to both.

Kill two birds with one (expensive) stone, in my opinion.

Somehow, I don't think the "hastily made tourism video of cleveland" is a comprehensive representation of Cleveland. I don't think I will really get to see what cleveland is like when I go to visit Case. I can also give you my email address if you would rather answer me privately!

I am so excited to visit Case 🙂 students all seem happy there(more so than any other places) and I want to learn more about what makes the students so happy.
