Hey everyone, I interviewed at Iowa yesterday and wanted to share some of the things they told us during our day (specifically for out of state applicants). At this point, everyone interviewed goes straight to the final pool (which started a week or 2 ago). Then on the 15th of March, after a review of every candidate, we will be notified if we are accepted, rejected, or placed on the 'alternate list'. The dean told my group that this year Iowa will interview 400 / 3000 OOS applicants, and accept about 120 outright. The next 100 will be ranked and placed on the alternate list. When people who are accepted start withdrawing their applications they will start pulling people off the alternate list until they have between 40-45 OOS students.
She said that last year they pulled only 2 people off of the alternate list, but a few years ago they exhausted the alternate list, so it's a really unpredictable process. Thought this might help some of you guys out. GL

In previous years, everybody hears back at the same time. I think it is traditionally the 2nd or 3rd week in March. Everyone in the final pool will either get an acceptance, waitlist with ranking, or rejection letter.

I have to admit that this was really frustrating last year. They sent us an email saying decisions had been mailed to us and no results would be sent via email. Then the next day acceptances went out via email. It's like they forgot that we can communicate over the internet or something. We knew they were lying within hours of those emails.
 
OOS interviewed 1/9. 3.7/31Q

They said the next round of admissions starts february 1 and will come through until mid march, then assume wait listed. still "plenty of space left in the class" and many will remain in "final pool" until march anyways.

I got "final pooled" late january. fun stuff, fingers crossed. All the ppl I interviewed with were well qualified....good luck all.

Wait...so they are still sending acceptances in Feb? From last years thread it looks dead from Jan to Mar 15?

I don't think he/she said anything about an acceptance, just a final pooled decision. Everyone who interviews from now on is automatically final pooled. No more acceptances will go outuntil March 15th.

Um, so do any current Carver folks have any input on the "Introduction to Medical Education" summer program that Lefty Doodle mentioned above? I most likely won't have the time, but since I'm both a non-science major and a nontrad I'm at least curious to hear more. They mention especially considering the program if you're below a 3.7/31... is it mostly anatomy/biochem/cell bio/genetics remediation and study skills?

From everything I've heard, it sounds like that is the general idea. It is designed to give people the skills necessary to be successful. It's especially useful for non-traditional and non-science students. I don't feel that it is critical to do, but it would probably help.

Does anyone know if they put us up for the second look weekend? I just got second look info from another school and they are paying for the hotel and all the food. I was originally not going to go to any second looks because of cost, but now I guess maybe I will....
 
Thank you. Now my question is where did you find this info and where can I get more details? Is it in our acceptance letters because I haven't really looked at that in a while so I don't remember seeing it.
 
On Jan 27, Kathi Huebner sent out an e-mail with the brief details of 'Get Acquainted Day'. In that email, she confirms April 14 as the date.

Anyone have an idea about how much people enjoy living in the medical frats at CCOM? It seems like a great deal (rent-wise), plus you get to live real close to campus and stay with a whole bunch of different people. However, I've yet to hear actual feedback about what its like to stay there... any thoughts?

I think there are ~30 IS acceptances from the final pool and probably ~40-50 OOS acceptances (not really sure about OOS). The next 50 IS are put on the waitlist and I think the OOS waitlist is ranked well over 100.
 
Hey, is anyone considering doing the IMEI program? It sounds like a pretty good program for non-traditional students and they give you a stipend (the only time you're actually paid in medical school). Thoughts?
 
I was initially thinking about it, but I figure this is my last summer to really relax and I already have a lot planned for it. I didn't realize how long it is, but I guess that's part of what makes it effective. Definitely sounds like a solid program though.

I was pretty impressed that they actually give you a stipend and its not a tuition based program....Don't see why you wouldn't do it if you could!
 
Not trying to study this summer 😎. Got a lot of plans and things I wanna do before I spend my next 4 years bogged down with work. Definitely like the idea of the program, I just wish it didn't take up as much of the summer as it does.
 
I would recommend the IMEI program if you are able to do it. Few reasons:
1) Gives you a good idea of what the work-load will be like and you actually study material you will go over later in classes.
2) You get to know a group of your classmates and become friends with them before the entire class comes.
3) The 3 M1 TA's are really cool this year and will be a lot of fun.
4) You get to settle into Iowa city before school starts, and get paid for it.

I didn't have the opportunity to do it because I was waitlisted, but I would recommend it if you don't have anything else going on. I can also see the relaxing for one last summer thing though, so it's really up to you.

speaking of getting to know people. ive seen in a few other threads that people have made fb groups for the entering class. anybody got anything like that done for iowa yet?

Thanks for the heads-up. I just spoke with Admissions... there are now 544 in the final pool. Quite a few of us out there.

For what it's worth, the person I spoke with didn't know how many in the final pool were OOS, but said they overaccept OOS by 60.

yikes... was that 544 total? or just OOS?
 
Did anyone receive a confirmation of receipt email for the criminal background check from CCOM?
How can I know that they have received it?

I got emails from the background check company within a week or 2 of submitting and then a snail mail notice from admissions saying my admission was "complete" and that all transcripts, etc. had been received.

It looks like the class of 2017 (entering in 2013) will have to deal with a major curriculum overhaul. Core clinical clerkships will start for them in the M2 year, so patient contact is going to happen a lot earlier. There will also be major pathways for M3s and M4s that focus on generalist vs interventionalist with electives.

Just wanted to ease some concerns and say that this is not entirely correct, they accepted way more than 2 off the OOS wait-list last year. My brother was something like #82 on the OOS wait-list and he got in.

I've heard of changes like this occurring at other schools. Does this mean they would take step 1 in the spring rather than summer?

On the proposed curricular model, it looks like they are still trying to decide whether to allow for students to take the USMLE Step1 around January/February during M2, July/August after M2, or November/December during M3. Step2 is scheduled around September/October of M4.

Just got the "New Student Get Acquainted Day" (aka second look) info in the mail today. Looks like they don't put you up since it says you should book accommodation early and gives a website where you can find hotels and motels.
 
And then what if we are waitlisted...even longer!

I was just looking at last years thread to see when correspondence went out... Looks like people received the dreaded "a decision has been made email" on the 9th which is this Friday so hopefully we hear something this week! Still can't figure out if there was a conclusion made last year about the email. It looks like you can either get an email saying "a final decision has been made" or simply just "a decision has been made" which may shed some light on acceptance/rejection or waitlist, though it looks like accepted people got emails saying so not too long after as well.

Do you think they are doing mass emails...or is there more hope for us today???
 
Accepted today Out of State Interviewed 1/16 (straight to final pool)
 
so i guess no "decision has been made" emails then? I wonder if they sent out all their acceptances today or if there are more to come... congrats to all of you accepted. Heres to hoping for at least a wait list!?
