Oh, in that case... is one side of town generally 'better' than another? For example in my current city the West and North are generally cleaner/safer than their counterparts. Is there a general trend for Lexington?
Like most cities there are trends, but sometimes neighborhoods close to each other can have drastically different feels. In general it's best to avoid North Lexington, say above 3'rd or 4'th street. Also avoid living west of S Broadway, given that Versailles Rd is higher crime. Given that you have a car, you have more options distance-wise. Your can rent a house or an apt, and this depends on whether you will have roommates, your preferences, etc.
The houses across from the hospital and to the south are a bad idea, think bro's with a fresh frat tat on their arm to whom college is just 6 years of partying and an assault charge is just youthful indiscretion (moderately exaggerating, but it's not where a med student wants to live).
There are apartments and townhouses within a few miles out Tates Creek Rd, some houses on Waller Ave by St. Joseph's, a lot of less wild, really good walking distance rental houses on the other side of campus (Columbia Ave, Sunset, Woodland Ave, Transylvania park area), and then also house rentals that are walking distance to campus but more downtown such as along S Limestone north of campus and E Maxwell along the north of campus.
The biggest apt complexes dowtown are The Lex on S Broadway ($$ and very party/college), Newtown Crossing, Park Plaza (~1200$ but Dtown Highrise), and others I'm forgetting. For very nice apartment rentals outside walking distance look at
www.lexingtonapartmentguide.com Every complex I saw on there is quiet / nice / within 5 min of UKCOM.
Keep in mind that the rental population of Lexington is largely composed of people affiliated with the University of Kentucky, meaning that the best time to look for places is in the spring/summer as vacancies open.
So your options are varied. I suggest using
www.padmapper.com to look at rental listings. You can expect about 300-600 per room in a house, 500-750 in a townhouse, and apt prices vary a lot.
Feel free to ask any questions, I'd like to help my future classmates.
