yeah, Hilton seems like a great hotel overall, but I'm on a tight budget! So I'll just stick with my ~$60/night. 😀

Alright, I'll look into that. Although I'll most likely be taking a cab on the day of, just to be sure...

Thanks for the input! 🙂

Maybe you've already prepared for this, but I am always shocked when cabbies don't know major streets in a city. If I were you, I'd make SURE and have directions for the cab driver, plus a good map of the area. Good luck at your interview! UK is awesome!

hey guys! i'm an M1 here at uk. i interviewed really late, in march and here i am! also, i know of at least one other person in my class who interviewed in march as well. So don't despair if your interview is late. There will be class openings. Feel free to ask me any questions about anything! good luck

My boyfriend and some friends applying last year received phone calls. Usually, it will be one of your interviewers you had that calls. They told us at interviews yesterday that we would get a call, so watch your phones!

In the interview I believe they said we could call on Monday to find out for sure.

Yeah, I just don't want to have it go to the answering machine if my interviewer takes the time to call me. I guess it is understood that I am working though.

OOS, Complete 8/19, interviewed 8/30.

Accepted!!!

Congrats to those accepted, good luck to everyone else!!!

It's a pleasure to join the ranks of "the accepted."

1st year: waitlisted
2nd year: no interview
3rd year: ACCEPTED!!!

Congrats to those that got accepted.

I just got a waitlist letter snail-mail. Already have another acceptance so i guess I wait & see.

So whether you've been accepted or waitlisted, what does your status say on the application page?

I haven't gotten a call yet, and I can't get home to check my mailbox, so I'm looking for a clue as to what I've got waiting for me . . . Trying SO hard to stay busy and not worry about it!!

CONGRATS to everyone who's gotten in!! UK COM is awesome!

Good luck!

Good luck!

Thanks! I got the call about an hour after I posted this!

I'M A WILDCAT!

Congrats everyone who's gotten called so far!

Got deferred through snail-mail, but I have an acceptance elsewhere. I guess my lack of shadowing was a concern for the ADCOM.

It says in the letter that a review won't occur again until April. That seems like a really long time!

Anyone get an email with the acceptance after their call? My interviewer said something about this, but I was too excited to pay too much attention 😛

Accepted. He called 1 minute after my 2 hour test started, so I had to wait a little extra. Congratulations to everybody who has heard good news, and good luck to the rest!

I called and asked, they aren't sending out an email. The only ways of finding out are a call from your interviewer, snail mail that they sent out saturday 10/15, or if you call admissions and ask about your status.

I wonder how many acceptance offers they made.

I was accepted over phone. Guess I will have to wait for the mail

Accepted. 🙂

I'm rooting for you LifeTake2, good luck!

Congrats Saggy.

I've got an acceptance, a waitlist and one more interview next weekend. At this point all I can say is I WILL be starting medical school at 36!!

Woah congrats to everyone accepted!

I interview on Oct 29th... I hope the class isn't too full by then lol

Hoepfully I'll join you guys with the acceptances 😉

Made a facebook group for University of Kentucky College of Medicine, Class of 2016. The group's profile pic is an architect's drawing of the gorgeous new hospital, with a UK logo over it. (What copyright? huh?)

We can see who some of our future classmates might be, I guess!

It still sounds too good to be true 🙂

Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted! (And fingers crossed for those still waiting or waitlisted :luck:)

ACCEPTED ACCEPTED ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!! This was def my top choice oos and I'm pretty sure I started screaming on the phone before my interviewer even said anything 🙂

OOS interview 9/13

they do waitlist a lot of people so that the class isn't totally full by the end of the year. They do this so they don't miss out on really great applicants at the end of the cycle, but that doesn't mean they don't take people off the waitlist. Don't give up!

On hold here too. Anyone know when the committee meets again?

Long time lurker here. Thought I would stop by to say:
I GOT ACCEPTED!!!
I'm so so so excited! I got the call last night 😀.

OOS. Interviewed 10/11

Does that include "on Hold" applicants too? or just new interviewees

I am SO sorry -- I posted this thinking I was on the other forum! The Tues/Wed schedule is for the Louisville committee and I actually have no idea when UK meets. But they are so nice and open that I'm sure they'd be happy to tell you if you called.

Congratulations! You should look for the fbook group 🙂

hey all, congrats on all the acceptances 🙂

I'm not applying this cycle, but I really wanna apply to the University of Kentucky for the next cycle. Do you guys think OOS applicants need really strong state ties, or extremely strong stats, to get a II or even a secondary? Any help would be great! Thanks!

I would imagine that strong stats helps. I know they have a GPA/MCAT screen. Im not sure what the GPA is but the MCAT screen this year was a 32. If you're below the screen they email you and ask you to explain why your applying to the school/any state ties you may have. I got this email before the secondary.

You can check my MDapps if you want to see the particulars of an OOS interviewer.

Interviewing Saturday Oct 29. So excited!!!

I booked my room yesterday, and man is it ever going to be busy. I had to book a little further away cause everywhere near the school is either sold out or their rates have tripled. From what I've heard there's a big football game as well the end of the horse racing season.

Any last minute tips about the interview or getting around town?

This is my first med school interview and I'm starting to get a little nervou 😳

Can any current students or Lexington residents provide some tips on housing? I saw a bunch of apartment complexes across the street from the hospitals, are those any good? I have a car so I wouldn't mind commuting either.

Oh wow, your question about the places right by the hospital made me laugh!! My brother is an undergrad at UK and he told me about those when I asked your exact question. Apparently that little area ("State Street") is synonymous with out of control/ constant/ awesome partying. He literally said the words "State Street" like it was legendary or something. I forget what occasion he was telling me about, although it probably had to do with UK basketball, but he described the whole street as one huge party for an entire week. With couches. In the street. On fire. So yeah, probably not an ideal place for a medical student to reside (unless you'd rather forget studying and just get lots and lots of first-hand experience treating accidental injuries, haha) Maybe he was exaggerating, but I'll be looking for a house to rent somewhere within driving distance. 😉

DrRower is exactly right! I am an undergrad here at UK, and the places across from the hospital are definitely not for med students. State and University Streets are huge party streets. The whole couch burning business was true lol. One instance actually happened last year. Cops are constantly busting up parties over that way. Columbia Avenue and Oldham Avenue aren't too bad. I'm probably going to move a little further away from campus next year, though, because people can get pretty loud on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.

Oh, in that case... is one side of town generally 'better' than another? For example in my current city the West and North are generally cleaner/safer than their counterparts. Is there a general trend for Lexington?

Truly, if you have no experience in the area and no very close friends in Lex (close enough friends that they'd spend a couple days apartment hunting with you), my advice is to get a real estate agent.

I have a friend who went to med school in NYC and she said getting an RE agent was the best thing to do for a move like that. Typical commission on apartments is 1 month's rent. In the end, having someone drive you around town, show you places in your price range, help you prioritize amenities/ price/ commute time . . . it's totally worth it. Agents can literally tell you when and where traffic is worse or what rental agencies frequently make tenants unhappy.

And in answer to your question, there's not necessarily a "side" of Lexington that's better or worse . . . it's more like little areas and neighborhoods here and there that are like HUD (that's gov't subsidy, so very poor) or super industrial, etc. That's why I'd say it's worth the money to pay an agent, but that's just me.

I think this is good advice. I was unfamiliar with Lexington, and was able to find a realtor last year who showed me around (and didn't expect anything in return).

I also want to add that in late February/early March you will start getting emails with a list of housing opportunities and a contact at UK who can answer questions you have about housing. The housing opportunities list includes apartment and landlord recommendations from current students, requests for roommates, homes/condos that graduating students are selling, etc.

Does everyone get a secondary, I got one, not sure if I should fill it out. OOS.

consensus of this thread seems to be that OOS does get screened. so if you got a 2ndary you've made it over some hurdle already. i know it's a pile o essays, but why not? especially if you have connections to kentucky. they have a third designation i think for those who aren't instate but have strong connections.

Like most cities there are trends, but sometimes neighborhoods close to each other can have drastically different feels. In general it's best to avoid North Lexington, say above 3'rd or 4'th street. Also avoid living west of S Broadway, given that Versailles Rd is higher crime. Given that you have a car, you have more options distance-wise. Your can rent a house or an apt, and this depends on whether you will have roommates, your preferences, etc.

The houses across from the hospital and to the south are a bad idea, think bro's with a fresh frat tat on their arm to whom college is just 6 years of partying and an assault charge is just youthful indiscretion (moderately exaggerating, but it's not where a med student wants to live).

There are apartments and townhouses within a few miles out Tates Creek Rd, some houses on Waller Ave by St. Joseph's, a lot of less wild, really good walking distance rental houses on the other side of campus (Columbia Ave, Sunset, Woodland Ave, Transylvania park area), and then also house rentals that are walking distance to campus but more downtown such as along S Limestone north of campus and E Maxwell along the north of campus.

The biggest apt complexes dowtown are The Lex on S Broadway ($$ and very party/college), Newtown Crossing, Park Plaza (~1200$ but Dtown Highrise), and others I'm forgetting. For very nice apartment rentals outside walking distance look at www.lexingtonapartmentguide.com Every complex I saw on there is quiet / nice / within 5 min of UKCOM.

Keep in mind that the rental population of Lexington is largely composed of people affiliated with the University of Kentucky, meaning that the best time to look for places is in the spring/summer as vacancies open.

So your options are varied. I suggest using www.padmapper.com to look at rental listings. You can expect about 300-600 per room in a house, 500-750 in a townhouse, and apt prices vary a lot.

Feel free to ask any questions, I'd like to help my future classmates.

Accepted UKCOM Class of 2016!

Ahh lots to take in. Thanks to the people who have helped out so far!

I don't have a car but I take it that having a car would be necessary for living in Lexington?
