Got pre-secondary rejection today. =(

I actually got the pre-Reject letter yesterday. It was funny because I called and was wondering where my secondary was and they told me on the phone that day. Anyway, to my real story.

So in the letter they tell you that you can set up an interview to discuss your application. I call set up an interview and ask the girl at the desk some questions. I tell her my GPA (3.52/3.58 sci) and MCAT 28Q. She proceeds to tell me that I should think about a post-bac year. A post-bac year? Seriously? I know its not a 3.7+ but comeon a 3.52 and your suggestion is to take another year as an undergrad? I can understand retaking the MCAT but wow. I mean it is probably for the better I was rejected. I DO NOT want to live in Detroit. However, to add one more thing...I have a friend who got in here with a 29 MCAT and a 3.64 GPA. I guess .12 on the GPA and 1 point on the MCAT can really make a big difference.

I am OOS. Was also rejected by VCU and Wake Forest pre-secondary. I must really have a ****ty app.

THIS IS NOT MY POST. THIS IS FROM 2 YEARS AGO!!!! 🙂

Don't think like that. That is not the case at all. Wayne didn't even read your app probably. Read the following.

You did NOT go wrong. Period.

Even as an older student I too get caught up in the introspective and obsessive doubt about my application. Can anyone truly blame any of us for second-guessing every step of the process? We have spent much of this winter and spring studying for a single exam, asking people we respect and admire to critically write about our character, and then spent the whole summer writing essays dominated with the words 'ME' and 'I'. Is it any wonder when we have setbacks we reflexively think it is our 'fault'?

Remember: It is a human and imperfect process.

Chin up. Move on. However, if you can't yet move on...

I believe they offered you an opportunity in your rejection letter to talk to the dean about your application?

...I had my meeting a couple of weeks ago...

My advice: See if you can do it over the phone. They are not going to change their minds when you meet. Also, note that the assistant dean admitted he did not review my personal statement and I suppose based on his concerns with my primary that he didn't review my letters of recommendation either. I would be surprised if your appointment would be any different.

It hurt, mind you. No way around it. Not fun to hear that I am not competitive this application cycle from a medical school dean.

The unexpected up-side of my meeting was that it was final. I confirmed that he was not going to change his mind. It was closure for me. No sense in annoying or arguing with him, now is there? He encouraged me to continue with my post-bacc coursework and apply again next cycle. He had all the power, so I politely thanked him for his time, shook his hand, and left. I had done everything reasonably within my power. End of story.

I am not getting any younger. My goal was to get into WSU this time last year. I didn't dare dream of anything more than that. I still dream of going to medical school. Just not at WSU. Best laid plans of mice and men...

I said up-side because I am now 100% in the mindset of moving out-of-state and re-inventing my family's life and future. It is scary and exciting all at once! When I went to my second of six interviews (thus far) the week after my meeting with WSU, I came off genuinely sincere about attending their school. That much I got out of my meeting.

Onward, my dear friend. Onward, and upward.

Best of luck to all the WSU applicants on this thread.

Best of luck to you in particular, ltw902.

Codeblu,

Thanks for the advice. I will take it as it is...but I have to ask you have had 6 interviews this cycle?

That wasn't codeblu's actual info, it was a quote from another post. The message is signed w/a different user name.

Also, finally turned in the secondary yesterday morning. Done with secondaries!! 😀

I was verified on August 4. Received my screening email today. Hopefully, I can get a secondary :xf:

you got rejected with a 37 MCAT?!! I think its Wayne States loss....you'll get in a much better school then that...keep up the good attitude

How long post verification did the screening take to receive the secondary for everyone else? Seems to be long for me. Starting to think Silent rejection

i have a 39 and have not gotten a secondary 🙁. I haven't gotten rejected yet, but I assume that's coming soon. I'm starting to think there's something really wrong with my app that I don't know about...

I liked Wayne a lot too

I did not get rejected... for the umpteenth time.

And I'm sure you won't be rejected. There's nothing "wrong" with your app. Wayne is slow as molasses. Plain and simple.

Hi All,

I don't usually put too much stock in this website, but I was checking to see if anybody had received an invite to interview with WSU yet. However, on to two important things people should know, but might not realize.

1) DO NOT expect a good MCAT score to carry you. I was rejected twice with a 38 MCAT, 3.3 bcmp gpa/3.4 overall gpa, and solid EC's (I was not offered many interviews). A 3.5 is not a good gpa. I think it is silly that schools put as much stock into gpa as they do, but it is the way it is. If you need to eat a poop sandwich by doing a post-bac year, plug your nose and start chomping.

2) Comparing your application to those around you is tricky business. The one thing I've learned about applying to medical school over the past 3ish years is that expecting the process to be completely logical is a fools game. If you are going to do so anyways, make sure the person you are comparing yourself to is your peer (i.e. race/gender/age/background).

I'm going to EDIT my post.

This is NOT my post. I was NOT rejected (yet :xf:) 🙂

HA just reread as well....sorry I almost blew my top thinking you didnt get in....and to think the verbal section is my best...

Clearly everyone needs a primer in VR... sheesh! 😉

Hahaha don't think like that. This process is weird. Not every school/applicant are created equal. What happens will happen. Just put forward the best face possible and things will work out. If you want this badly... just talk to any applicant/reapplicant that was successful. I'm assuming the feeling isn't comparable to much else we've felt in our lives. If you want to do this... you WILL! :luck:

So I called the office to see the status of my application (I still hadn't received a secondary yet). The administrative assistant picked up and asked me for my AMCAS #. Five seconds later she says, "Smith (my last name without a title), you are no longer being considered " and then she hung up...lol, I hate Wayne State! Worst office staff in the world.

Wow, that was blunt.

Wow. Doesn't surprise me. Granted she was probably stressed out or something. Still though. Not an excuse.

Just added this school! I hope I get a secondary despite being OOS and having a slightly lower MCAT :xf:...

For the re applicant question do you guys think that they are specifically referring to only their school? To me it sounds like they are asking you do it if you are a re applicant in general....just want another perspective...

"What academic, employment, volunteer experiences have you been engaged in since your last application to medical school? How does your current application differ from your previous application?"

I went with reapp to Wayne. They have nothing to compare this app to if you are a first time app to their school.

Thanks! That makes it a lot easier...one less essay...assuming I get the secondary invite...

thank you wayne state for showing my love 🙂

secondary received!

Just got this secondary. OOS. Was verified 6/1 and was beginning to lose hope...

wow this is beautiful. absolutely beautiful and encouraging.

btw does anyone know how many ppl receive a secondary?

Anyone know how many in-state secondaries are sent out by wayne. I know around 1300 submit primaries but I kinda wanted to know interview chances purely stats wise based on if one got a secondary.

huh? it seems like you post on here a lot so maybe that a sdn reference I don't understand. Regardless, if you could help me out my man I'd appreciate it

ok I have been reviewing all these replies and I feel bad for some of these people. I am a chemistry major at MSU and have a 3.55s gpa and 25Q MCAT and before that I got a 16 and 17 on that terrible test. I mean as soon as I sent in my primary a week later I got a secondary. So I do not know if they got monkeys working in the admissions office or what, but I hope I get an interview best of luck to everyone and my concerns go out to those who have already received rejection I know how bad it feels I am reapplying this year because I only applied to osteopathic schools last year.

Don't be nervous. Not at all.

If they sent you a secondary, it means that you have a shot. Your GPA is fine, your MCAT would be nice to be a 27-28+ but hey it is what it is. I wouldn't worry about it too much. I wish you the best of luck this cycle.

Wayne State admissions office are generally pretty nice people. But remember, this is a human and imperfect process. They CAN and WILL make mistakes, just like you and I. Don't hold it against them.
:luck:

o i agree with you a 100% code blu I am not saying anything against their admissions office I just found it quaint that these individuals who are very qualified did not get secondaries I was just expressing my sympathy towards them bc I know how it feels. Best of luck to you and thanks for your response

I also think that their screening is more rigirous for out of state applicants than in-state. And they look at how balances your sub scores are as well. Someone once told me that wayne screens out those who have a 6 or lower in any section of the mcat. But I don't know how true that is.

I have also heard that if you are unsuccessful in your application Wayne and you have an 8 in a section... wayne suggests you re-take.

well my friend who went on a guided tour at wayne state told me that they look at other components other than mcat/gpa heavily. they gave 6 different scenarios of applicants, and they all got in for different reasons. So I am sure even if the mcat/gpa is high there is something missing that they want in all their applicants.

Does anyone know how strong Wayne state is on research? Just wanted to know cuz I got a secondary last week and I wanted to see how much impact my research background would have. Congrats to everyone else who got a secondary, and buena suerte. 🙂
