I did the snail mail thing and received no confirmation of receipt either.

Judging by how lively this thread is, it doesn't look like they have been slinging the invites out -- so you should still be alright with next week.

They have a nice and low mcat median of 29, OOS students are expected to be above that. Are you?

EDIT: nvm, I stalked your old post in the WAMC subforum. Very nice app you put together. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya.

haha, yeah my mcat is higher than 29 but i'm worried about my verbal score of 8 (i hate verbal...).

I wish us both luck. I never knew how agonizing this process was...now I know lol.

Oddly I mailed in the snail mail stuff a week ago and still no confirmation of receipt. Is that normal?

They are definitely on the slower side... but I think it's because there is really only one person who manages all of the admissions paperwork and such... I guess we will just have to be patient.

Of the 13 schools I've applied to, I've received secondaries from 12...WVU is the only one I am waiting for... and ironically, it's my number 1 choice!!

My MCAT scores we reported on 8/16, but the I was told I will be on hold at WVU (pre-secondary) until they receive the official roster for my MCAT date (7/16). It's hard to be patient... especially since I've had interview invites at other schools already! Ah!

I read their website again, says they only give confirmation of receipt of the online secondary anything you snail mail won't get confirmed lol.

yeah I hate waiting, at least you already have interviews lined up at other schools to be excited about! haha.

Is the "communication" letter new this year? or has it always been their policy. I'm not sure if I have to get an additional letter... In my "committee" package -- I have a committee letter, 2 science faculty, a character-type letter from an MD, and a letter from my PI at NIH. I waived the right to read them all... so I'm not 100% sure what they say...

No, I think it was around [at least] last cycle too.

I have no committee at my school, so just submitted 4 letters through AMCAS. I did not specify any as "communication" focused - there doesn't seem to be any problems...

perfect! that's what I was hoping! thanks!!

Just got an interview invite via snail mail! Definitely excited 🙂

So you don't need to send a communication letter for your app to be marked complete?

Congratulations!!! 👍

For those of you that received interviews, did they assign you a date already? If so, when are you interviewing?

I am still a bit confused on this "Communication Evaluation". If I have a letter from an MD do I need to get another and send this form? Thanks in advance.

Congrats on your invite! Did you have any of your letter writers fill in and send the communication evaluation?

I just received a secondary today (OOS, but from Pennsylvania). I applied to 21 M.D. schools, but after I received my MCAT scores back (25R - I got a 7 in Verbal, when my average was an 11) I completely stopped applying to M.D. schools altogether.

In light of hearing that receiving a secondary means an interview, I am definitely, definitely going to apply to WVU. I love the school and have family from WVU (I grew up in VA).

Can anyone absolutely 100% confirm this secondary= interview unofficial rule? I have been on the 2010-2011 thread and someone had quoted Beth Ann McCormick, essentially saying yes, if you receive a secondary, you're going to be interviewed.

I've got a 3.60 GPA, 3.59 sGPA. Still have no earthly clue why I received the secondary, but good gosh I am so happy right now! I have life .. somehow!

Tapepsi?

Holler at your boy

Haha I do plan to call. And I appreciate the advice - I will do that tomorrow. I was just trying to see if I could get some insider information tonight (I just received the e-mail today).

Yeah, not too proud of those MCAT scores. I was averaging 31-32. No excuses on test day, but my computer shut off on me. I think it messed me up a good bit.

Even if secondary = interview, that does not mean much! There are only ~40 spots for OOS applicants... I've been checking MDApps and it looks like MOST OOS applicants get WL at WVU. My bf got accepted of the WL at the end of June last year as OOS, 30 MCAT, 3.7ish GPA... For $100 you might as well risk it

Called today .. Mrs. McCormick is out of town until Tuesday. Guess I will have to wait to know for sure!

... :luck:

Just got the secondary at West Virginia University School of Medicine (Robert C. Byrd) .. I've been reading the thread for 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 .. Apparently 100% of applicants who receive the secondary receive interviews (especially OOS kids, since they are much more selective about screening these individuals).

Does anyone have information about this being true at this school, and for that matter, whether or not this is common at other schools?

Cannot confirm this. But if the thread said that... it might have some credibility.

FWIW, it's not common at other schools. Except I think Vanderbilt sends their secondary with an interview?

this is your third post concerning the same topic...
You were already told on the WV thread that it's true and to call them yourself if you don't believe us

I certainly did not ask every OOS classmate about thier application experience, but here is what I know. Secondary app almost always equals an interview. What it means: unless you say something outrageous or send it too late, you should expect an invitation.
Many (most?) OOS applicants get WLs until May or so. I know that in September this may sound like a death sentence; however, it is better to get accepted late than rejected early.
Having an MCAT over 30 helps, but it is definitely NOT mandatory even for OOS applicants. So, if you have an MCAT of 28 or 29 it is not a reason to give up your hopes about WVUSOM. Just play your cards and hope for the best.

Hey, guys! My apologies for running away so quickly 🙂
Frazier, I don't want to ruin anyone's dreams, but as far as I know from conversations with other students and the faculty, WVU rarely accepts an IS with a 25. Considering that we are talking about an OOS.......
HokieMD1, I understand that it is getting a little late in the game. But if you are so positive that 7VR is not your score, why don't you retake it? If you can pull a 9 on PS, keep your 10 in Bio and get an 11 in VR, you will be golden. I didn't retake MCAT because my chances of going up were about equal to going down. For this reason, I was afraid to shoot a snake right next to my foot. But your situation sounds completely different!
Speaking of interviews. I would never take a real med school interview for practice. If you are unsure about your interview skills, find a couple nice docs and ask them to set up a mock interview for you. In general doctors love to help anxious premeds with such things. But again: taking a real interview for practice will definitely not be the best use of it.
Hiyaman, I completed my primary on June 16th, and all of my LORs were received by the first week of July. Unfortunatelly I don't remember exactly when I received the secondary and an interview invite. I would guess around late July and late September, respectively. It was 2 years ago, but I don't think that things changed that much since then.

And, Hokie, please stop being perplexed about receiving the secondary and foresee a rejection. Just remember: adcoms hate to waste their time. They never extend interviews to those who obviously don't stand a chance. Just do a good job with your secondary, send it back promptly and cross your fingers. If you get an interview, try to be ecstatic rather than perplexed 🙂

Hey guys!

Forgive me if this is a really stupid question, but in the online submission form, is the "date submitted" supposed to be the date we submitted our AMCAS or the date we are submitting the WVU online form? The latter seems redundant since they should know what day they receive the online form, but I just wanted to double check before I hit submit.

Thanks, and good luck to everyone at WVU! :luck:

Interview invite oct 13. Just showed up in my mail box. OOS. Forget when i had everthing in. Late July I believe. Anyone else going to be there for this date?

^^Congrats!!!

How long did it take for you guys receive the e-mail confirmation for your electronic application? I submitted mine a week ago and haven't gotten the confirmation yet, and I'm not sure if I should feel concerned about that haha

Just checked my mail box and I received an II for October 10, 2011. I was complete July 20, but I never received an online confirmation. I called Beth Ann and she told me that I should have received one immediately after I submitted it, but I never did. Her voicemail says she is out of town until October 3rd, but I'd still call somebody to confirm the online form if you never received something.

Interview Invite today. After I submitted my e- app i got a email not long after saying Ms. McCormick would DL and place it in my file.

I was complete with my e-app mid-august.

Interview invite here too! I wonder how many students without state ties they accept...

Got it in the mail yesterday! Interview Oct. 24.
I didn't get confirmation email after submitting secondary either.
OOS, no ties. (seem to be a lot of us!)

The electronic one, too?

and congrats guys! 😀 :luck:

How long does it take to receive secondary invitation? I got new MCAT score on August 30th. Thanks!

It took about 3 weeks for me to get a secondary. They screen pretty hard.
Now for my question:
How long did it take for them to receive your USPS secondary and to cash the check? Thanks. I appreciate it.

Yeah, I'd second that two weeks or more to get the secondary. I don't know when they cashed the check, but it was definitely an agonizing 3 weeks or so before the letter in the mail. I'm sure you could just call if you're worried it didn't get there. They were very helpful when I called.

Ya, I think I will call. Ms. McCormick is out of town for a month though so not sure who I will get.
