Can anyone suggest any apartments close to the medical school. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the apartments at Copperfield Court, Valley View Woods or any other suggestions!

Interviewed early December and still haven't received a letter. Anybody else in the same boat?

Hi everyone, I'm new to SDN so this is like my 2nd post so far. I hadn't planned on applying this cycle and ended up applying pretty late (primary completed 9/15). I was overjoyed when I got an interview invite from WVU :soexcited:. This is my first interview though, so I'm also pretty nervous (and it's scheduled for next week... :scared:).

Of those who have already interviewed, do you have any other tips for preparation?

It's mostly just stuff off of your app. They asked about a few of my ECs, some stuff from my PS, if I had learned anything about WVU that day...it was pretty laid back. All I did was read over my application and PS on the way up there...I really don't think you need to do much of anything else to prepare.

Does anyone know what time does the interview day here usually ends? I'm trying to book flights for my interview and not sure what would be a safe time to choose.

Also did people fly into PIT or Morgantown? It's much more expensive to fly into Morgantown but I don't know how I would get form PIT to WVU and back... the shuttle listed on their website only runs twice a day and the times aren't convenient for the flights available. Thanks everyone!

hey everyone!
I'm new to this forum, I've been reading through a lot of the posts and decided to join in.
Interviewing in a few days at WVUSOM. I wish everyone the best of luck. To all who have been accepted, congrats! To those with not so good news, keep your heads up! 🙂

The end time is variable depending when you interview. I was the last to interview and I ended around 4:10 I think.

Anybody started looking for apartments yet?

Yes. Called WVU housing and they directed me to a list on their website. The problem is the housing is a list for all of WVU. After sitting for 20 minutes at a dead stop waiting for the road to clear decided housing close to the stadium or Ruby Memorial is a must! Guess I'll have to go back again!

any letters in the mail yet? i interviewed the 19th, nothing yet.

Hello guys! My congrats to fri727!
LadyRugger, I don't think they release applicants' priority scores to anyone. Actually I don't think any school does. However, they might tell you your approximate location on the list (like closer to the top / bottom, or somewhere in the middle). I know for sure that VCU does this; can't say anything about our school.
Guys, there is plenty of housing around the med school, and I didn't hear a single story about anyone having trouble finding an apartment within the walking distance. Nonetheless, if you get accepted in the summer, you might end up renting a 2 bedroom place, since most of us like to live by ourselves and pay the least. If anyone ends up confused, desperate and homeless in Morgantown, PM me; I will put you in my car, and we will find you a place to stay 🙂
Kdeoid, yes flying to Morgantown is more expensive, but consider all the circumstances. If you stay, let's say in Euro Suites, they will pick you up at the airport and take you back with no extra charge. In addition, I would not recommend arriving right before the interview and leaving right after. Weather in this area can sometimes be unpredictable. My interview was on Monday. I arrived on Saturday evening and left on Tuesday morning. This allowed me to take a good look at the school, know exactly where to go on the day of my interview, get familiar a little bit with Morgantown and relieve some extra stress.

Fortress - thanks for the kind words to all.

Do you have any reason to believe that WVU-SOM tells applicants their approximate location? Or are you basing this off of experience from what you know definitively at other schools?

Hi Hokie, nice to hear from you! I said this based on my experience with other schools. I remember that during my interview day Beth Ann McCormick told us that she has no information about applicants' location on the wait list. But my gut feeling tells me otherwise. She is likely to have this information and release it upon a very polite inquiry.

Fortress,

Unfortunately, I was not able to access any approximate waitlist information. I sent her an e-mail over the weekend, and a portion of her reply is as follows:

"The committee does not do a ranking so there is no way to tell you where you are on the waitlist and when you may hope to hear from us regarding an acceptance. I will tell you that we are still interviewing and that we will not start moving anyone off the waitlist until after we are done, around March 15th. At that time, we will submit a tentative roster to AMCAS with all offered acceptances. After that time anyone who has accepted with us who then does not want to take the acceptance and withdrawals, their spot will be taken by someone off of the waitlist. The waitlist is used until August 1st when we firm up our class for the year as our orientation will begin this year on Monday, August 6th. "

Hopefully this will be of use to others

Fortress,

Tried to PM you back, but for whatever reason, the messages that I sent in reply (tried 2x) are not showing up in my sent folder. Shoot me an e-mail at [email protected]

Hokie, I am getting all of your messages, no worries 🙂 Hmmm, it means another 2 months without any news............ sorry to hear that.

Fortress,

Wow! Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate it. I don't know why it was not appearing to be working.

Hi everyone!

I'm completely new to the forum. I just got my waitlist letter today and was super bummed about it. After reading the forum posts about OOS applicants almost all getting waitlisted, I was thrilled. Thank you for the info, it made my day 🙂

KnifeofIce!

Welcome to the OOS/WL crowd! Warning: Compulsive SDN checking may occur ..

Haha, I already can see that...Probably not as compulsive as my checking of mailboxes every day...Glad there's others in the same boat. I almost had a heart attack when I saw a letter from them today because I wasn't expecting anything for at least another month (they told me they were behind straight-up and not to bother checking the mail until mid-February!)

when was your interview date

Also, the waitlist letter was dated 1/19...That can't be enough time right?

After speaking with multiple people, it may be fair to say that their unofficial policy is to tell applicants to expect a delay just to make sure they get back to everyone "on time."

Aha! I see what they did there.

I'm hoping I'm one of the lucky people that hears a week after they get their waitlist letter.

(Well, not quite done but the end is near) Just in case some of you didn't get the email that went out this morning (I think it only goes out to accepted applicants) it included this at the bottom.

"Our last interviews are schedule on Friday, March 2nd, and we plan to have filled all the positions in the Class of 2016 by our March 15th deadline."

Does anyone have any comments/suggestions on what apartments near the school are best?

Figured as much. I'm trying to figure out how many of us there are in this thread that have been WL'ed .. Though it's probably impossible to make a conjecture about the total # ..

From everything that I am hearing, the AAMC is very strict in their rules regarding wait-listing, and that's why WVU can't give out any information (I have a friend at the school who spoke briefly with some of the adcoms for me). I know that everyone wants to satiate their curiosity on where they stand as individual applicants, and I just can't seem to think of what harm it would do to give ballpark numbers of wait-list placement.

At the very least, it gives those both higher and lower on the list an opportunity to make important decisions about the next year of their lives .. Oh well.

Hey, in all seriousness, what would you guys pay to have a copy of that wailist? Ha ha ha

I don't remember if I posted here, but I'm oos and waitlisted as of around early nov( interviewed first week of oct)

I would really just be interested in

Total number of people on waitlist

is there a ranking system yes/no

How many people are pulled off the waitlist each year.

now thats just rough. out of everything that goes into med school (classes, mcats, money), the application process is by far the worst.

Oos waitlist here too. Waiting is tough, hopefully it works out.

+1 for the OOS WL here... While we don't know these specific stats, the gender/residency status for the class of 2015 (in the pamphlet they gave us on interview day) gives a rough idea:

OOS
Males: 159 interviewed, 59 extended offer, 34 offer accepted (37% chance of being extended an offer).

Females: 89 interviewed, 38 extended offer, 11 offer accepted (42.7% chance of being extended an offer).

This does not take into account those that interviewed and then withdrew from the waitlist... but my guess is that not may people do this.

Hopefully, we will hear some good news soon. I'm going a little crazy here...

Eh really not too bad of chances. Long as they arnt too many better applicants than myself out there!

I would seriously just like a decision now. I have a backup plan to go to a 1 year grad school program, but I'm wondering if I should bother dumping more money around at this point. It was so expensive to apply and I don't want to apply if I get accepted to a med school...

This wait is driving me nuts. I rush home every day from class to check my mail 🙁

KnifeofIce, I hear you on that one. I have thought the same thing myself, more or less.

The best way to think about it, I think, is that WVU-SOM doesn't even know itself whether or not you will get in. So literally none of us on the WL currently have a direct answer (except those towards the way bottom). It's just all dependent on how attractive the school is to those who have been accepted ..

Honestly, the best thing to do is probably to assume you aren't getting in. That's what I'm doing. Going about my business with no assumptions. If you can manage to get that in your head (it's tough, I know), it will benefit you greatly, I think. Go for the graduate program. If you get in, great, it won't matter. Yeah, it's money lost, but you achieved your dream! You'll be so excited at that point that the money factor will be on your back burner. If you don't get in, you'll be glad you got a head start on next year. Make a decision and don't look back.

Whatever happens, either way, some time very soon (in the scheme of your life), you will be accepted to medical school.

Ugh I absolutely hate the idea of spending all that money on medical school applications and then having to go to grad school instead anyway...

I wish there was a way to get a refund. How do people afford this?!

Still keeping my fingers crossed. C'mon WVU! The interviewers gave me such positive vibes, I thought it would be a "for-sure" thing (even though I've trained myself not to have such high hopes...)

OOS,30/3.5/3.4. I have an interview feb. 10! What kind of questions have they been asking?

EventRider, though I can only speak of my experience with my two interviewers, the experience as a whole (I think most would agree) is a very pleasant one. Expect them to ask you questions about your application, your experiences, and general things that you put on your AMCAS. Just go in and be yourself!

Thanks Hokie! That's great because the other interviews I have had went the same way and they were great experiences!

EventRider are you sure you aren't me? 😉

I adored my interview to be quite honest. The interviewers I had were very personable and mostly ask about your file and clarifications and such. They also asked me about one not-so-hot grade that I had and to justify it. Nothing about medical ethics or healthcare system.

Knifeoflce, "I wish there was a way to get a refund. How do people afford this?!" Yeah....... One thing that pisses me off big time is: why they ask applicants to submit secondarys (with a 50$ - 150$, of course) clearly knowing that they don't stand a chance?
How do people afford med school or how they afford applying? I can tell you how they afford the school. 60% are IS, and some of them get scholarships. OOS? OOS = OOLuck. Quite a few of my classmates have parents who are doctors; others will join the army, navy, air force, etc.
But to be honest, once you are in school, money is the last thing you should worry. Even though I am officially broke right now, I am much more concerned about my next block exams than anything else in the world.
Now back to my favorite pathology. God knows how much I love it 😀

Poor you,
Or you can be like me, not have a lot of extra money to pay for it all but since I really want it, I DIDN'T WHINE ABOUT IT and instead extra hours. If working a few extra hours a week is too much extra work for you, MEDICINE IS NOT the path for you.

now I get your point I really do, but this whole medical thing has thrown me into the red like no other. Its easy to say "just work a few hours", like it assumes that everyone is only working part time and are supporting themselves . I assume you have had help along the way one way or another.

most of the time thats just not enough. its hard to get through all of this it really is, and its obvious who is disadvantaged and who isnt in these circumstances.

those who arnt disadvantaged:
applied to 44 schools and get a hotel for each interview

those who are
applied to 10 schools, drive 5 hours in the early morning to get to said interview.

its little things that make a huge impact. although there are some things around that help people with little money, it is far beyond and equal chance once you get down to the fact that a lot of people really just cant afford the application process.
