Hello everyone!
I would like to share some of my thoughts on this school so far as a first year:
Pros:
1. Material we are learning is manageable as long as you stay on top of your studies. There is a scribe program and some recorded lecture/powerpoints. (I did well in the first block with a militarized study schedule)
2. Housing is fairly cheap. NYMC accommodates for students who have families and give priorities to them. There are no electric/gas/internet bills (yay!)
3. All professors have an open door policy and are very receptive to students. They do help out if you ask.
4. There are some great faculty/doctors and they are usually open to bring you to their meetings or shadowing opportunities. (My preceptor experience has been very intriguing so far).
Cons:
1. NYMC is behind on updated technology. Things like copy/email function on copiers, podcasts (an issue for those who want to manage their time efficiently), and blocked ports and speed of housing internet are the big ones for me.
2. The gym is not "state of the art" if Tony Sozzo told you so. There is no bench or squat rack. So if you go to the gym regularly, you might have to join some other gym.
3. NYMC is out in the boonies. There is public transportation/trains but that can get expensive if you go out 2 times a week. Bring your car.
4. 2016 became the guinea pig with a new curriculum. The Foundations of Clinical Medicine course has some issues with organization since there are 4 combined courses in it.
I can't give you guys any information on MMIs because I didn't go through that process. All I can say is enjoy your interview cycle and do lots of fun things since you are limited on time in medical school.
I'm pretty busy at the moment so I will only drop by once in a blue moon. Don't count on me responding to any PMs in a timely manner.
