So I had an interview not that long ago, I was pretty impressed by UCR. It's not really a new program, they've been training doctors for the last 40ish years (the UCR/UCLA agreement).. They're adding things into their curriculum and the 3rd and 4th years will be spent at UCR and you'll be doing rotations in the surrounding hospitals, that's the main difference. They have some pretty cool programs going on and because its the first year, you have a lot of room to make a name for yourself and start things you may not be able to at other schools.
The way they explained it (I'm going to stay on the safe side and keep it general, we had to sign confidentiality agreements), they really do review your application holistically and they care as much about your interests and future plans as much (maybe more) as your stats. Because of this though, the review process after the interviews takes a while and they said we probably won't hear back until the end of Feb or March
The staff is amazing and the facilities provided are pretty awesome. Everyone's really nice and is basically there for you, so if anyone's having trouble with their application, call the office!! They're really helpful
The interview - again, I can't say much. But if I could only give one piece of advice, I'd say to be yourself and have fun. As cliche as that sounds, that's what will make you do well. If you just go with it, the MMI format is actually really fun and I kinda got to know some of the other applicants semi-well in the half day.. there wasn't really a competitive atmosphere. Oh and last thing, the interviewers are there to help you, they're there because they want to be and they were genuinely interested and engaged in what we had to say.
Sorry I couldn't say anything too specific, but UCR has a lot going for it, especially for a 1st year program. Its pretty much my #1 now.
Have fun and good luck!!!
