Hi everyone! Long time reader, first time poster here. I received my acceptance call last Friday around 2:30 pm. I think my conversation with Dr. Chan might provide some insight into a couple comments I've seen! 🙂

I know somebody who was accepted and Dr. Chan also told them that one of the reasons the U liked them was because they did well with a "difficult" interviewer. So it would appear that the admissions committee does have certain interviewers regarded as difficult, and if you get one of them and do well it's a huge bonus to your application. I feel this is too bad for myself and anybody else who felt that their interviewers were very friendly.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. All of my interviewers were very friendly--I didn't feel like I was grilled or had any absurdly difficult questions. Dr. Chan mentioned that all my interviewers liked my ability to communicate and the poise with which I articulated my positions. Perhaps those are the traits they're looking for, regardless of the situation of the interview--whether friendly or difficult.

Did anyone that was accepted see their online portal change before they received the call?

My portal did not change before; in fact, Dr. Chan mentioned that it would be changing later that day. It seems like they really want the phone call to be your first indication of acceptance.

Other than that, good luck everyone! I wish you all the best and hope we will be classmates next year. 🙂

The facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/uusom2017/?fref=ts has 58 members, I think 4 or 5 of which are administrators. I imagine they send an invite to join the group to all accepted students, but I also imagine some have not yet accepted it and/or don't use facebook, so I'm betting they have filled close to 60 or 70 of the spots by now. Fingers crossed.

I would scale down the estimate....but of course if someone is willing to bearify for us. =/

Some other details I have gathered from the facebook group: 50/50 male to female ratio, and a disproportionate amount of U of U undergrad students, which I suppose should be expected. On another note, can anyone confirm or deny that all that calls have happened between the hours of 11-12 and 2-3?

I agree with Entrada90, I don't think they are caring if you have a difficult interviewer or not. While Dr. Chan said I did well in that difficult interview, he emphasized the fact that I showed good communication skills in ALL of my interviews. Communication skills, knowledge on a variety of topics, and enthusiasm are what they seem to really value.

It seems like we have seen some calls outside of those hours. If you read back a few pages, I believe you will find calls that came around 10:30 or after 5:00.

many of the people on this facebook page are listed as starting med school in 2012.

No, It took about 3 or 4 days till after i got the call till the portal changed.

All I can say now is let the pessimism begin once again. If the facebook group is anything, then that is the accurate number of seats that have been accepted so far

Are there no calls today? I would have thought that we would have heard of a few calls by now.

I know a few people who have been accepted but are not on that facebook fan page. I am assuming the seats are nearly filled up now.

Most schools "accept" more students than matriculate because they expect some not to marticulate. All "class of" facebook pages have members from previous years that serve as guides and answer questions. Don't base your worries on facebook. (But, I guess it's pretty legit to base your worries on the fact that the end is nigh.)

OOS schools seems to be the way now for Utah students, no?

dunno but the facebook page is now +1 to 61 members

I know some of the people on the fb page that are already matriculated (as in are already students in other years of med school), and it looks like a handful of them are. I'm guessing they have upper class members on there as well. So I wouldn't base all spots on pure numbers. Plus some (like Goldie) works in the admissions office but isn't listed as an administrator. I mean I know a handful of spots are gone, but I wouldn't take the group number as face value of accepted students for the upcoming class.

Of course, a lot of people who have been accepted may not have joined the facebook page. It really tells us very little, unfortunately.

So, what are the real stats then? Someone needs to tap someone at the U and divulge the details.

No reported phone calls today. Interesting...

This is getting old fast. What might have been a productive day was once again spent waiting for a phone call, and dreading each email notification. Let this end.

Yeah, its a long shot for us in state folk anyway. OOS schools may have a better chance, no?

I'm guessing only about 25 students on the FB page have just been accepted from the time that it shows the invitation was sent out to them. Purely speculation of course.

I called admissions today to see if it was too late to update some of my research that was accepted for publication today. The lady said it indeed was too late to update anything as all decisions for admission had been made and they are now preparing to send out materials. Not sure what that means for accepted students not yet notified.

I'm curious about why you seem to think that out of state options are the best route for Utah residents. Statistically speaking it is very straightforward for a utah resident to attend the U of U medical school. Look at the stats: https://www.aamc.org/download/161128/data/table1.pdf.

Only 403 Utah residents apply each year, and 75% of the class is composed of residents. Those are incredibly great odds for a utah resident. Compare that to UCSF where 3534 in state residents applicants apply each year. In state is the best way to go for a utah applicant.

I'm really hoping that today's the day! I'm also wondering if they have sent out all acceptances but 20 and are now waiting on the governor's signature.

That doesn't sound particularly promising, especially since we haven't heard about any calls since Friday.

All this talk about interviews from the phone calls with Dr. Chan is making me nervous. I thought they gave as much weight to your interviews as your GPA, and your service, and your leadership, etc...

From the stats I've seen, in the previous years, it looks like they have extended invitations to ~120 people for 82 spots because not everyone accepts. So I'm thinking that they might accept ~150 this year. I think there is still some hope. At least I HOPE there is still some hope! Hopefully we haven't only heard of the people who plan to matriculate here on SDN and there are a decent number of spots left! Wishful thinking?

The reason why I am saying that is that utah does not have enough choices for med schools in state. The U of U is the only and dominant school in the state of Utah. I have had better success with schools outside the state of Utah in MD/DO. If utah had more choices for medical schools, then I would stay instate; but seeing as there is one and chances are slim, I'm looking to OOS schools.

Nope, a skewed formula for some reason =/

Dr. Chan made is very clear at my interview that the U only extends the same number of acceptances as they have seats. Waitlisted students only hear from the U when seats open up. So if the class size is 102, then only 102 acceptances will be sent by the U until some of those reject the U and then an acceptance will be sent to waitlisted students.

Interviewers assign your application a score (1-5 w/ 5 being the best) based on the information and activities that you reported. Then, during the interview they verfiy their score. For example, they may discover that some lied about hours etc.. which would drastically lower that score. Or they find during an interview that a student has characteristics that didn't necessarily get across through their application: this could higher the score. Students with a cumalitve score of 10 or 12 (can't remember now, but I can verify if interested) from all three interviewers (whatever combination of individual scores) get moved one. Those who don't are stopped I believe. Then the committee looks over the total application, including interview scores, and assigns students a letter grade. A is better than Z. This is were students stand amongst all applicants.
So interview aren't necessarily weighted more heavily than your stats, but it's the only eyes that have seen your application and you in person, so the interview feedback really helps verify what you're preaching in your application.

OOS Schools seem to be more attractive now, no? 🙂

and you know this because... -_-?

Not necessarily. It depends on the school. I unfortunately discovered that almost every oos I applied to accepts extremely limited oos students (less than the U). If you're applying out of state, you have to really research each school. And applying to private schools (who don't consider state status) may be the majority of available options. Many private schools are very expensive and competitive to get in.

I have several friends in medical school at the U, a few who were interviewers this year. I meet with each before my interviews to discuss the process and get advice. And my sister attends the U so I had some time to talk with administrators and pick brains about how the process works.

Also, if you search the internet, I bet you could find all the same details. Samuelson has a few presentations out on the web which are very informative.

you just hafta find the diamond in the rough then lol =P

I did.

Does that mean you have an acceptance elsewhere? If so, congratulations!

lol. Not what I meant. I still want to get into the u...but being inudated with this info...it gets to ya.

I recently saw one of Dr Samuelson's presentations about the admissions process online and it mentioned that after the applications are all scored the top 10% are thrown out along with the bottom 10%. I have heard this rumor several times before and even emailed the admissions office about it last fall. The secretary said that it was obviously untrue because the U would want to accept the best applicants. However, because Dr Samuelason mentioned this in his presentation and because it was the secretary that responded to my email, who may not be informed about these details, I am beginning to wonder if that rumor is true. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
