2012-2013 Virginia Tech Carilion Application Thread

During their first round of acceptances last year they offered 10K to each student in the M1 class. A few months later they increased that to 20K per student. I cannot speak for the M2 class or M3 class but all M1 students got 20K. We are not sure what next year holds for us, but I suspect that if you are getting 15, we probably will too along with the other current classes. VTC will give us as much money as they can, and they've been generous to say the least. I assume this is very much related to how much funds they procure, and what the donor situation looks like. Either way, the scholarship money makes VTC costs more reasonable and closer to that of an averagely priced state-school. Hope that helps!

Not sure, but don't lose hope just yet. I think for the first one or two classes they had a March interview session as well. Not sure if they are planning for that this cycle. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can confirm or correct me. Don't lose hope till you see that rejection letter.
Are they going to review all applications in March, or just the people who interviewed later? I've been put on some form of hold at every school I've interviewed at, and for the most part, it means delayed rejection.

At the interview they said that they're going to review all the applicants (old interviewees and new interviewees) in order to decide who gets the last batch of pre-waitlist acceptances. As far as knowing how many ppl are accepted after being deferred, I don't believe there are stats on that.

Anyone think an update letter could affect my decision for March if I interviewed in mid January (I missed the cutoff for the acceptance day) or should I wait until after the decision in case I get wait listed?

Yeah i think an update would definitely be helpful depending on its significance, it could improve their impression of you for the march acceptances. If you end up waitlisted, you can always send a letter of interest. I believe they are receptive to updates and LOI's.

So I tried to get a specific date for when the next round of acceptances are coming. Admissions just told me late march...
is there a 2nd look date for this school?
So I'm trying to fill out the FAFSA so I'm all ready for whenever I get an acceptance somewhere. Does anyone know what Virginia Tech's school code is? Does it have one, since it's new-ish? Or do I just use the undergrad's code? In general, if FAFSA doesn't have a med school listed, are we supposed to just use the undergrad code (like Drexel, for example)?

it doesn't have one yet. the school is not fully accredited until it graduates it's first class, so this incoming year. however, if you are accepted, they offer a financial aid package that matches the rates of the the government. so basically, you don't submit a FAFSA to VTC as far as i know.
I don't think there is one. At least no one talked about it in last year's thread. Maybe they might start one this year?
This is how it worked for the previous classes, but the admin people during my interview said it will be different starting this year. They claimed they would be eligible for title IV federal financial aid programs starting in 2013, so the class of 2017 and current students will be able to receive stafford and grad plus loans this fall. I specifically asked them about FAFSA at the interview and they said when the time comes to use VT's school code (003754) as there isn't a VTC specific one. So that's what I did. Hopefully it all goes through this year like they said, but regardless it wouldn't hurt you to include their code on your FAFSA.
nBeeDee is right, the acceptance letter directs students to use the VT FAFSA code. If you doubt that, call the financial aid officer. She was very nice and helpful when I called.

Are you sure that VTC students will be eligible for federal loans this upcoming year? I was under the impression that it would be (at least) one more year until they graduated that first class and got full accreditation. So I've been assuming one year of private loans. In fact, that's why I thought they gave out the scholarship to everyone - to help offset the 1+ year of private loans. The first class, who had to deal with 4 years of private loans, got their whole first year's tuition covered with scholarship.

nmj3236, that is incorrect. This is the first year that they will be involved in the federal loan programs. However, being their first time through the process, they are still trying to work out the bugs.
As I stated in my last reply, the FAFSA code, and additional information on the process, are idenfied in the acceptance letter for admitted students (at least they were included in mine).

Also, VTC has an agreement with multiple different banks that offer us loans at, or better than, the federal rates. If for some reason federal student loans are not available (and I simply dont know, I'm not up to date on that info so don't take this as me saying one or another) by the time your class matriculates, your loan rates will not be higher than the federal rate. The scholarship money granted has nothing to do with offsetting extra costs (other than the general tuition of a private school).

current M1 here, and I can say that a 2nd look date is in the works! we're just about to take our block exams this week but one of my classmates is working to get one organized after the March wave of acceptances go out. Keep an eye on your email!
btw, feel free to ask me any questions about the school/area as well. i moved from a large metropolitan area to Roanoke so I can offer some perspective on that.
There will be FAFSA for the 2013-2014 school year. This will apply for all incoming classes as well as current classes.

I guess I'm just unfamiliar with what Roanoke has to offer compared to somewhere larger and more populated like I am used to, and I didn't get much of a chance to explore the area during my interview day. I'd be curious to hear more about what you guys do in your spare time in Roanoke and any pros/cons about the area in general.
I also had a couple questions about the clinical years if anyone cares to comment. From what I understand almost all of the rotations will be through the Carilion Clinic system, most being at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. I know it is one of the largest hospitals in VA, a major referral center for the region, and a level 1 trauma center, but there aren't a ton of residency programs at Carilion. I could see myself in a couple of their available ones, but I do have interest in several specialties in which they don't have programs. From talking to current students, their experiences have been very positive here though.
Is it a concern for students that Carilion has few "home" residency programs available when it comes time for the match? But looking at this from a positive angle, are medical students more involved than other hospitals (being able to do more hands on things clinically because there are few residents/fellows), and do they have more time directly learning from attendings? That's exactly what I wanted to hear. I loved this school, and I just want to see it again before I make a decision. I'm pretty sure VTCSOM is where I will end up attending.
I haven't heard anything after my acceptance from the ADCOM. I'm sure they're busy with the admissions process, but when do we typically hear about financial aid? My FAFSA is already processed.
Where is the best location to live in Roanoke? I am hoping to walk to school everyday if I can.

Ok so first off, Roanoke is a small city but it doesn't lack the conveniences of a larger one. There is a 24 hour CVS and grocery store for starters and you have your starbucks, chipotle, froyo etc...This is all within a 5 minute drive mind you. The restaurant scene here is surprisingly vibrant and there have been at least 3 new restaurants that have opened since I started school here. There is also a pretty large commercial district by the airport that has everything you can imagine (Lowes, really nice movie theater, Walmart, Ross, BBB, Dick's, strip malls, etc...)
I'm not sure what the weather was like when you came here to interview but the views you have here of the mountains are quite impressive and not something you'd get in an urban environment. That said, Roanoke is very much an "outdoorsy" type of place. People run, bike, hike, walk and enjoy taking advantage of the area around them. There is a paved trail called the Greenway here and it runs along the Ronaoke River which you'll find lots of ppl exercising on. There's mill mountain (which the star is atop of) and a quaint zoo located at the peak.
Now onto the cons, Roanoke is a small city so you're not going to have a similar club scene as you would in DC or NYC. In fact, I'm sure a lot of my classmates would agree that the places you can go to get your dance on are limited. That's not to say there aren't cool bars or places to chill at but that is a con. Additionally, traveling within Roanoke is nice but if you plan on going outside of the city, the next major one is Blacksburg, ~40 minutes away which shows how isolated we are.
To be honest though, I've been extremely happy living here and in my spare time I like to sleep in, get some casual reading done, ride my bike or spend time with my dogs. In addition, with only 42 classmates we're pretty close and end up hanging out a lot so I consistently play basketball, watch the walking dead, catch a movie, jam on Rock Band etc... with my classmates during our downtime/when we get tired of studying. There hasn't been a time where i've thought, "man, i wish Roanoke had.....X." Except for good Korean/Chinese food if thats a dealbreaker for you haha.
Unfortunately I can't really comment much about the clerkships and match being an M1 but i know that there are M3s on this forum who might have some free time (just maybe)

Oh man, we're all over the place. I live in old SW Roanoke which is ~0.8 miles away. Some people live downtown which is ~1 mile away, others live in South Roanoke which is also ~1 mile away and finally almost everyone else lives in the River house (in Wasena) which is ~2 miles away. There really isn't a "best" place to live, you kind of just shop around and explore your options (i'd recommend using http://www.padmapper.com) Walking is definitely doable and there are plenty of places you can rent w/in a mile of school.

That's very helpful, thanks a lot! It sounds like a good mix of city and outdoors stuff. And personally the club scene isn't an issue, I'm much more of a bar person and my dance skills are nonexistent
I'm close enough to make a road trip out there and check Roanoke out again regardless if there is a second look weekend.I saw online that there's a Chinese grocery store somewhere in Roanoke. Not that it's a dealbreaker, but is there at least bad Chinese/Korean food?
Does anyone know how likely it is to be accepted after one deferral? This is my top choice, and I already sent in one update letter (clearly stating that I would attend if accepted) and am about to send another on Monday. I called and asked about my chances, and the lady on the phone said I have a better shot because I'm reviewed twice. I don't quite understand how that works out, but I hope I'm not bound for the wait list or rejection pile.
you get reviewed again after deferring? wow. i always thought it was a sure shot after you defer the first time. perhaps, different schools, different policies.

They deferred me in January. I was just wondering if this meant I was definitely going to be rejected or wait listed.
It appears that there are 185 applicant to be considered. I estimated they must have interviewed around 240 people (40 candidates- 6 interview weekends), which means around 55 people have either been accepted or withdrew from consideration. How many people do you guys that that they will take from the 185?

There is no way to know for sure without contacting admissions, who likely won't reveal that number to us. VTC has a strict limit on class size and likely won't over enroll. Therefore they will likely accept 20-50 people. Just my opinion. Also keep in mind, some of those 185 will likely drop before acceptances since they might have acceptances elsewhere by now
lol, if only med school admissions was that easy. I wouldn't say your chances changed that much from first batch to second batch. We were up against 160 total for first round, now we are against 185. Assuming same number of spots are still open, chances are not significantly different. Wishing you the best! Hoping for my first acceptance as well
