Accepted!!! 😀
Alternate list. Even though my interview went very well, I expected this being OOS...
Question:
I took Ochem 1 lecture (3 credits), Ochem 2 lecture (3 cr) and Ochem lab (2 cr) during undergrad, for a total of 8 ochem credits. This was the series at my school that everyone took (good, public university).
Do you think I have to take another ochem lab to meet Wayne's 2 semesters of ochem requirement? I've been accepted and am seriously thinking about coming here, however, I took ochem 5+ years ago and am not sure I would be successful taking it now...
Thanks for any insight and happy holidays!
If you were missing a requirement wouldn't they have discussed it during your interview or something? now I'm a little worried bc I've been accepted but I only took 1 semester of gen chem lab (2 semesters of class). My institution does not offer 2 semesters of it. Should I be worried? I am a biochemistry major and have taken other chemistry courses (not pchem or inorganic tho which can usually substitute)I just called the admissions office and got a big old no.
She said you need to take a full year of Organic Chemistry lab, no matter what.
No substitutions (biochem lab can't substitute and a more strenuous lab can't substitute).
Sigh.
I don't think I can take an organic lab. It's super difficult to get into any classes here and I haven't had organic chemistry in over 5 years.
Blah.

I haven't received the official letter of acceptance yet (just the email). I wonder if it will have conditions of acceptance on it?
I would have thought that they would say something...
The other schools I interviewed at had me fill out a worksheet to show how I met their requirements.
I'd hate to not go to here because of 1 laboratory...
Find a CC to take it at, shouldn't be a problem, as I have never heard of Wayne rejecting CC credits.

Did you consider deferring for a year to give you more time to take the orgo lab? I understand if other factors such as high tuition are a major factor in your decision...it's just that the med school process is so difficult and you have already made it through and been granted acceptance. I also really hate to see someone give up on a dream because of money issues 🙁 good luck with whatever you decide!Officially withdrawing my acceptance today.
Sorry to do so, but the combination of high out-of-state tuition costs, having to take an other Orgo lab this late in the game, combined with a few personal reasons has lead me to this very tough decision.
This seems to be an excellent school!
Good luck to the rest of you!
I called and asked the admissions office about it today and they said they will take one semester of general chemistry lab as long as you've had a full year of class and there is not a second semester of lab offered at your institution. They told me to have the head of the department send an email to them with my amcas number and explaining the situation (vouching for not offering the lab). We should be fine! 🙂Same situation here at both schools in my city. There just isn't a second semester of general chemistry lab, just a lecture course.
I emailed them to ask about what to do since I really don't have any option to take a lab (which I would be ok taking if it were available at all).

Unfortunately, my school did offer a second semester orgo lab. Just not in the sequence I took (which my advisor recommended). This was several years ago and I was not pre-med at the time.
The problem is that I would have to take an orgo course (2nd semester I'm assuming??), when I haven't had orgo for 4-5 years. Plus, the community college classes are full, so I'd have to pay over $1000 for the privileged. This combined with the out of state tuition costs at Wayne (I'm from Michigan, but have lived out of state recently. 22 years in michigan is trumped by the few years I've spent outside it :/ ) is enough for me to go with my other school (which is by no means a bad school).
Your concern and advice has been really great! Too bad I'll be missing out on cool people like you at Wayne!
Good luck!
Did you declare a state different from Michigan as your legal state of residence on your AMCAS? How do you know that you were accepted as an OOS vs an IS. I'm curious to hear this because I am opposite your situation. I grew up in another state and went to high school there, came to Michigan for undergrad and has been working/living here since getting my degree in 2009. I considered my self a MI resident because of this and put my legal residence as MI on AMCAS. But from what I understand, it is the school that determines whether you are IS or OOS. They don't just take your word for it (in terms of what you put on AMCAS). Did you call the FinAid office to find out if you are going to get OOS tuition? Do you know their requirements for qualifying for IS tuition?
Thank you and sorry for the hijack.

This seems really strange! I'm a Michigan resident and I panicked when I saw this post. My decent public university offers Orgo I, Orgo II, and one Orgo Lab. This seems to be pretty standard practice. Can some others contribute to this issue and share their experiences? I have a hard time believing that Wayne would make a big deal about this. It's not that I don't believe you ^. I just want a larger sample size.
Another user above called them and I spoke to a couple different people. If there's no lab credit offered at your institution, they will make an exception so long as you took the lecture (ie. for me, there's no gen chem II lab, so i took gen chem lecture I and II and then lab I and they'll ignore the fact that I only have 1 semester of lab).

So ... any IIs in the new year? Does anyone know when are they sending out the next batch?
Anyone?
II this week. OOS.
II received this afternoon for January 29th. Keep hope alive!
Are there many current students at Wayne State who were re-applicants to the school?
In my particular case, I interviewed in Sept last cycle and was waitlisted at the first decision date, and, ultimately, rejected at the end of summer. I reapplied this cycle (kind of late, verified in october) with a better MCAT score (35), more clinical experience, better grades, and, I believe, a better all around app, but I have not received an interview from Wayne this year. Just curious as to their overall approach and view of re-applicants?
Thanks for the info
Congrats! Are you OOS or IS and when were you complete? 🙂

I'm in the same situation as you. I interviewed last time but was waitlisted thorughout the cycle. Now I have improved my MCAT by 5 points and got 4.0 in 20 credit hours of post-graduate work. No interview so far even though my application is much better than last time. I am assuming they either don't like reapplicants, or my essays were poor.
Hey guys, I was wondering if wayne state frowns upon retake such as biochemistry and genetics? I didn't do well because my mother was going through serious health issues, which overwhelmed me. I know MD programs, in general, aren't happy with retakes.
When is their secondary deadline?
