2013-2014 Creighton University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was told that 30-36 get taken off, depending on the year. The waitlist is current at like 250 people although the numbers do dwindle down quite quickly near the acceptance deadline due to people accepting offers from other places.

Alright. And how many people on the waitlist do you think ACTUALLY call up and send in updates and LOI? I cant imagine everyone does, especially those that interview late who wont have much time to do much to improve their application before may

At the bare minimum, I would expect every applicant who doesn't already have an acceptance elsewhere does this. Plus every applicant who's very interested in this particular school and/or this particular city.

(Maybe some applicants in those categories are too lazy/shy/burned out to send in an LOI, but those applicants could well be shooting themselves in the foot. Then again, people do get accepted off the wait list without LOIs and update letters.)

i'd have to imagine that the percentage of people who get accepted without this stuff is low, since creighton seems to love updates and letters of interest. plus, if someone gets accepted off the list WITHOUT an update letter- meaning they havent done anything to improve their application- then it seems strange that theyd be put on the waitlist in the first place.

Doubt that's true. I imagine Creighton gets applications from more qualified students than it could accept due to limits on the size of the class.

I guess what I'm trying to say is if they have two people with roughly equal stats on the waitlist- both qualified... and only one sends an update... they're probably going to take that one over the silent applicant.

Current M2 at Creighton here, procrastinating because studying for Step 1 makes me want to cry. Anyway, I'm a member of the admissions committee, and you are absolutely right - we LOVE updates because it shows initiative, and shows that you're making the effort to keep your name known. That goes a lot farther than you think. Unlike many other schools, we're all about transparency here. My first time applying to med school, I was waitlisted at Creighton, and I called into the Open Door hours. Dr. Quinn walked me through my entire application and told me exactly what my red flags were (I lacked non-medical volunteering). As an aside, those of you waitlisted at Creighton - CALL IN AND TALK TO SOMEONE. Find out what your red flags are, fix them, and try again! Very few schools give you this opportunity - take advantage of it! So yes, those updates do indeed make you stand out against the hundreds of other equally-qualified applicants.

Anyone that interviewed March 28th here anything back yet?

Can any current students comment on the facilities at Phoenix vs. Omaha teaching hospitals? Which is newer/nicer?

Declined my acceptance and my diversity scholarship tonight - Here's hoping they turn around and give it to one of you soon!
I dropped my other acceptance yesterday and this morning saw that Creighton had increased my Dean's Scholarship amount!

Just withdrew my acceptance from here. Loved the school but could not attend, unfortunately 🙁 Good luck to all on the wait list!

Can anyone in the admissions office/committee comment on the current status of open spots?

^ am wondering the same thing. Anyone know how many spots are open/how many students Creighton is planning on taking off the waitlist?

I heard that there aren't any open spots yet so we're going to be playing the waiting game for a bit longer.

I called the office a little before the 15th and they told me that the earliest alternates would hear from them is the very end of May/early June

I received an email from them saying that they anticipate the first set of alternates to be accepted sometime in June.

Has anyone had luck applying to creighton with community college premed prereqs and getting accepted? I heard they dont accept CC premed courses multiple times on this site.

I'm pretty sure that is false. At the beginning of the year, we had a meeting to orientate all the students that were going to help with admissions this year. In that meeting they went over a bunch of stuff about what Creighton looks for in an applicant, and nobody mentioned that we don't accept prereqs from a community college. That being said, if you do, you better make up for it will a good MCAT.

I have a question about creighton, how strongly involved in primary care is creighton and does it have any special programs to facilitate and help primary care doctors working in underserved areas? Thank you.

Does anyone have an idea how many people are on the wait list? I have zero concept of how big Creighton's alternate list is...or how full their class is.

I would guess there are a few hundred on the wait list. I don't know if many schools do many post-interview rejections since its probably just easier to waitlist everyone who isn't accepted right away. I've heard that schools accept 2-2.5 students for every spot available. If this holds at Creighton, 304-380 students were accepted (out of about 650 interviewed). If Creighton doesn't reject post-interview, there could be 270-346 on the wait list. Keep in mind I'm just estimating these numbers-I think there were a little more than 650 interviewed.

As of May 21, there were not any open seats.

gyngyn (involved with a ADCOM) posted in the Waitlist thread on Friday, 6/06, saying that s/he hasn't yet seen any movement at creighton.

I had a chance to speak with Garland during free time on my interview day, and Creighton does not reject any interviewees. Everyone is either accepted or wait-listed. This year they planned on interviewing 700+ (I think that's the number), and they will accept ~300 outright, the rest will be put on the wait list. Generally, about 1/3 decline the wait list status, which leaves you with a wait list size of ~200. With the increase in II this year, it's probably closer to 250.

I, too, spoke with Garland about the waitlist. He said that around May there are usually close to 300 people on the waitlist. He said by the deadline it usually goes down to about 150 students just because students get accepted at other places and withdraw from the waitlist. He said from that 150 Creighton usually takes about 30 students. Hope that helps.

Well the class is still full (per the email sent today from Dr. Quinn) so things are looking bad, really bad for us wait-listers.

yeah. quite a shame, I had high hopes for some spots opening up.

So...anyone else concerned about what this means for us reapplicants? I'm taking a year off...but now I'm worried because if there's no movement at Creighton which, though I love the school, is not exactly top tier, I feel like that means it's gotten so much more competitive and in 2 years is going to be impossible!

Maybe they did a great job at selling the school! If you look back at the thread you'll see most people had awesome experiences here. I would've chosen this school over schools ranked in the 40s and 30s! But yeah I wouldn't have thought the wait list wouldn't move at all

would they tell us if we asked? I feel like everything they were willing to share was included in that email.
We'll never know until we try. I'm not super hopeful at this point but having the info is helpful. I'll post if I do find out.

Alternate list people who are applying again- when are you going to submit AMCAS? I'm holding out hope for Creighton but also don't want to be too behind for the next application cycle..

I'm taking a year off. I know it's not ideal at all, but unless your application has changed significantly since the last time you've applied, it may be worth it.

I'm not a reapplicant, but I gotta say, there's no reason to wait. You should submit your AMCAS now with only 1 school listed, wait for AAMC to re-verify your application, and then start adding schools if you don't have an acceptance by the time July 1 rolls around. The first secondaries don't start coming out until then, anyway, so you'll still be ahead of the game. Sure, you'll have to pay for the AMCAS, but... think of it as a small drop in the bucket compared to the overall cost of a medical education.

Remember, the longer you wait, the longer it will take for your application to be verified and ready for release to schools.

I called. they just told me the class is full. doesn't look like there's much waitlist movement in sight.
Thanks user12. I would "like" the fact that you called/posted but I very much dislike that the class is full. (¬_¬)

I very much dislike the fact that if I don't get off a waitlist I have to take the mcat again in a month

yuck =( I'm not looking forward to another $5000 application cycle and spending money on an smp to increase my chances.
