2013-2014 Dartmouth College (Geisel) Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For the first question, I'm treating this like a full on essay. Is this wrong? This is the first time of my life that I have not worked + gone to school full time, and so I plan on volunteering, shadowing, and continuing my hobbies for the next year. I discussed this in the first paragraph, and then in the second discussed the specifics of my present volunteering + shadowing, and the third paragraph my next volunteer activity + my hobbies. Is this too much writing? Too much about the present, and less about the future?

Got a secondary but not verified yet
Safe to submit or will I get autorejected?

Edit: Dartmouth is an ivy league tier school right? Is their med school also considered top tier?

I got one too but I'm waiting to be verified before submitting.

There med school isn't top tier but it is towards the top of the middle tier. I think US News has in in the 30's.

I wouldn't think so, there's not exactly a word limit so as long as you do repeat everyhting from your primaries then I think it should be okay!

On the secondary application, it says that applicants that are not US citizens and US permanent residents are required to submit a copy of a green card. Does this apply to Canadians? I know Dartmouth takes Canadian students but if I live in Canada, how am I supposed to get a green card?

I that it is odd that any applicant who isn't US citizen or US permanent resident would be applying. What are they referring to? Refugees? They are eligible for permanent residency after several years.

If not applicant isn't US citizen or US permanent resident then financial aid is limited.

I don't see the point.

International applicants. They aren't eligible for federal student loans, but they can get funding many other ways, including scholarships. Dartmouth actually has a relatively large percentage of international students (I would guess 5-10%, including Canadians).

That sounds fine to me, I am thinking about wording my 1st as an essay as well. As I have just received my secondary invite, I haven't started yet, though, I am thinking along the same lines as you. I would like to show them what I have done, how I am going to expand my resume with the opportunities I already pursue and why I am spending time pursuing those opportunities.

Good Luck!

I know some of the schools are pretty strict about plagiarism in their secondary application, so is it okay if I use a quote in my secondary essay, I shall cite the source properly.

How long are you guys's essays?
1 paragraph straight to the point? 😕
A 5 paragraph essay? 😕 😕
A full fledged 5 page research paper? 😕😕😕

Hey everyone,

Just filled out my secondary and clicked submit... nothing happened? No redirect to another page and my status is unchanged ("We have not yet received your Geisel Secondary Application.") I am also a FAP recipient, so I don't know if I'm supposed to get redirected to the fee pay section...

Has this happened to anyone else? Or does it just take time before they update?

Thanks!

I'd give it a day or two. If nothing happens in a week, call them.

How come the signature and date lines in my pdf secondary are blank? Anyone got the same problem?

Secondary submitted today!

Good luck fellow applicants!

With these invites I always wonder if they went out at the same time or not. There hasn't been a ton of action on the Dartmouth SDN about invites though, so perhaps they are still going out.

I've been complete since 7/1 so for over a month. I'm assuming they looked at my app. but didn't want to extend an II right now. 🙁

Eh, there have only been two IIs so far on SDN. I'm in the same situation as you (complete very early). I bet they're just slowly rolling the IIs out.

Complete 7/2 for me. I know it's super early... heck, the first day interviews have been given out! I just can't help but feel discouraged... +pity+ I know Dartmouth is a HUGE reach for me, but it's by far my top choice -- plus the people in the office have been so helpful and the campus/area is beautiful.

Congrats to those of you with interviews!

Complete 7/22 and nothing yet. Dartmouth was probably out of my reach anyways

Did anyone email in their interview date preference and not get a response?

I called & left a message. No luck there. Emailed. Still no response. How long have you waited for a response? I need to make travel arrangements so hopefully we get a response soon :/

I first replied to the interview invite 😳 but then the same night I emailed the correct address (I hope) and I called today but it was already 4 pm NH time so only 1 day for me. I plan on calling tomorrow morning. I really want to coordinate this interview with my other one to save me some greenbacks!

First II today from here. Complete on 8/12.

I know it's still really early in the cycle, but I was marked complete on 7/1. Safe to assume I'll probably be rejected? I won't lie, it is kind of disappointing, because I really liked Dartmouth.

I doubt we're out of the running. It seems like IIs are coming out at a slow trickle instead of a big batch

Judging off of mdapps, Dartmouth seems to move somewhat randomly.

We're still in it until we get the rejection email. As LizzyM said in a relevant thread, being "passed over" means relatively little.

Can anyone who has interviewed before comment on whether the student tour at the end is something most people do, and whether it is usually done on time? Thanks!

Oh God where it said "prefer to be called" I read it as "prefer to be called at" and entered in my phone number. Now it keeps calling me by my phone number. I'll email them I hope they don't laugh at me 🙁
