IS applicant applying here! Good luck everyone! 😀

OOS applying here. My brother lives and works down there -- could be fun!

OOS here too, but I dont have ties to the state, so we'll see. My stats are on my MD app if you're interested. I think I'm a bit of a stretch, but you can dream right? 🙂 Good luck everyone!

Same MCAT!

PS. How'd you like MI during your mission?

I LOVED it! Michigan was a tough place for the middle/lower class citizen when I was there because the job market took such a hit from the auto industry. I imagine its different now since many auto manufacturers have rebounded. But I thought the country was beautiful, and the people were super friendly. It was a great place to live! I mostly spent my time proselyting as an LDS missionary, but we would always do at least 4 hrs a week of community service. There is a lot of opportunity to do good in MI, so I am applying to one of your new schools at WMU.

Does Eastern Virginia have a requirement for OOS students to have ties to the state?? I haven't found anything on this on their website, and most schools (University of Utah, for example) are quite up front about this.

I'm pretty sure they don't say anything up front like other schools *and* just about half of their class is OOS (74 IS versus 72 OOS) so I don't think the issue is as relevant here.

Prompts are the same from last year:

Please provide brief detailed responses to the following Essay questions. Each question is limited to 2000 characters.

Briefly describe your exposure to medicine:

What do you think you will like best about being a physician?

What do you think you will like least about being a physician?

Describe yourself and your medical career as you see it ten years from now:

Please indicate your reasons for applying to EVMS:

Hey everyone - OOS here too - 3.6 PB GPA, 32 MCAT.

Wishing everyone the best. Good luck!

Hey everyone, did anyone else get the secondary app invitation today?

How are you supposed to enter the pre-req courses that were satisfied by AP credit? Do I just want to make it match whatever is on my official transcript?

I wondered this at first too, but just enter them as they appear on the transcript and select "AP" when from dropbox for Grades that comes up. 👍

Ahh, didn't see that, thanks 🙂

Edit: Nevermind, answered my own question. Goodluck to all applying!

Does anyone know what's the character limit to EVMS's secondary app essay questions? It was not provided in their website. Thanks.

Does anyone know if I have a realistic shot here from California with a 3.8/30? I just got the secondary and am currently debating on whether or not I should fill it out. I must say I do like the school though. I'm just starting to second guess myself when the school stated that OOS applicants need to have higher stats to be competitive....

I'm in the same boat. My MCAT is <30 and the email said that retaking it is strongly recommended to keep my application competitive. I'm not planning to retake for this cycle, as I applied to several DO schools as well. Should I save the money and not bother with the EVMS secondary?

Yeah, would be nice to know the splits of IS vs OOS MCAT/GPA. Website says "in recent years, students matriculating at EVMS have had a mean GPA of 3.44 and a mean MCAT of 30." Can't imagine OOS scores are through the roof given those relatively low averages, though.

That's what I was thinking when I applied. Plus my GPA is well above a 3.44. Just trying to figure out what this email means!!

Does everyone have a full year of chemistry and organic chemistry lab? My school only offered one quarter of each unless you were a chemistry major.

Yep. I dont think that is going to meet the requirements at most schools. Talk to your premed office on their experience.

My school did one semester of organic chemistry lab and then a semester of biochemistry lab and a semester of cell biology lab. Does anyone know if these would substitute for that missing semester of organic chemistry? I know that in most schools it does, but EV doesn't say anything about that on their website.

Can any current medical student here tell us if it is worth applying OOS with average stats? It would really help several people who have asked the same question in this thread.

the school has average stats and takes 50% OOS. it is logical to assume that applying OOS with average states is fine...

How do we enter pre-req coursework where the lab was included? Like if my General Biology was 4 credits including lab, should I just enter lab and lecture separately with a 1 and 3 credit split and put the same grade for each?

At the top of the page where you add in your work, it notes how they suggest doing it. I think you just note in the title "AND lab" and then repeat all the information in both of the additions you do, 🙂.

How much is everyone writing for these questions?

I feel like 2000 characters talking about what i would like least would come across negatively, as if I was complaining and bitter about the field. I will feel good if I have 1000 characters of things to say for that question.

Thank you!

I felt pretty good about the other questions but for the "What do you think you will like best about being a physician?" what else can we say other than "I think I will like A, B, C" in a few sentences. How are we supposed to flesh that out considering none of us actually are physicians?

Yea, I wrote about 1000 characters for that one. The "what will you like least" one is giving me even more problems though.

Although these questions are tedious, they are a great way to weed people out and see how much clinical experience you have. The more you have the easier these are to answer and the more you can write about. I use the word "you" in the general sense. I'm not judging how qualified you actually are.

What's the best way to arrange to enter the required classes if I'm on the quarter system?

Have people still not received a secondary from this school? I received a secondary from Irvine, and VCU, but I have not received a secondary from EVMS...weird

I received and submitted. I'm not sure if they send in waves or not though.

I am still not complete here. Is anyone else not complete?

Not complete, but not concerned. I submitted last Saturday. I've quickly learned this process is the ultimate waiting game. Patience!

In regards to the question: Describe yourself and your medical career as you see it ten years from now:

I am assuming they want you to describe what I will be like in 10 years or describe myself who I am today?

I approached it by describing some of the influences guiding my current interests and passions and then it merged right into how I imagine my medical career. So I didn't take it as a total "Tell me about yourself" question.

Essays ready but still waiting for one LOR. They want secondaries to be completed within 30 days of receiving their email, are LORs included in the 30 days requirement?

Do the character counts include spaces?
