2013-2014 Emory University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Got the complete email yesterday! Anyone been invited to interview/how soon after does this usually occur? Those who received invites, stats?

First II was 8/29 last year.

This has somehow turned into one of my top picks. Too excited.

So the "Why Emory" and "What's a physician's role" essays for MSTP are slightly different (it's "Briefly describe your interest in Emory University and Emory's MD/PhD program" and "What do you consider to be the role of the Physician Scientist in healthcare"), but the catch is that there's no "in approximately 100 words" limit stipulated... Tempted to go wild here. Should I keep it to ~100 words although if I wouldn't have known of the MD limit if not for SDN?

So late ... haha

I love how writing secondaries does this. Every new secondary I write, I think to myself, "Oh! I want to go here!!!"

I haven't started this one yet!

Submitted. This school seems wonderful, would be lucky to go here!

I'm confused. It says my application is not complete, though they have received my payment, photo, LORs, and secondary. What could be missing? Anyone else having this problem?

UPDATE: Nevermind, it says allow at least 2 weeks for it to be processed... It's been about two weeks, so I'm still a little worried.. but I'll wait it out.

Give it a few days to update.

I have the opposite problem...they don't have my letters yet but they told me I'm complete...I'm okay with that I guess.

Hey guys! Emory hopeful here. I finally got the complete e-mail (after over 3 weeks of being submitted with everything sent in). The email mentions that IIs are sent out anytime from "now" until feb.... Any II's received by the crowd here?

Same, just got the email even though I submitted ages ago...

on emory's website it says the average MCAT score is a 33, but what is the chance for a in state applicant with a verbal of 9 and phy and bio of 12, sGPA of 3.9, overall GPA 3.8 to obtain a interview?

You sound like you are right in their ballpark 😉

Emory is one of my top 5 dream schools. Would love to live in Atlanta and attend here. Here's to hope!

Emory states that they want their med applicants to have 18 hours of Humanities courses. I've only been able to take 15 since my engineering curriculum really does not allow for much flexibility. How should I handle this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Take 3 more senior year?

Do a ton of verbal practice and retake MCAT.

Also, engage yourself in all sorts of literature. The non-fiction book Team of Rivals would help but diversify your reading list.

It really depends on where you are at. If you are planning to take/re-take the MCAT really soon, it's better to just do more practice tests and re-think your strategy on how you should approach the verbal section. If you still have at least a few months or a year or so, engaging yourself in literature can really help.

My overall score was a 32. I've been looking for seats but to no avail. Just going to apply and see how it goes. Can't do anything about it now.

Thanks! Yeah it really sucks. My score on VR started dropping to 8s and 7s on the last 4 or 5 aamcs. Only thing holding me back

How does everyone approach this prompt: "Briefly describe (in approximately 100 words) your health-related experiences. Be sure to include important experiences that are in your AMCAS application, as well as any recent experiences" ?

I wasn't sure if i should just list out everything i have done or if there was another approach to it, 😕😕😕😕😕 since... I already listed everything in my AMCAS. lol.

A lot of schools ask questions that require re-stating amcas in a concise way- I answered this as one of them. Where you can just briefly list out all of the highlights presented on amcas- this will give them a quick way to assess how much clinical experience we have.

Hello all -

I'm not sure if everyone now looking at the page has seen, but I'm a current M2 at Emory and I'm happy to answer any questions about Atlanta or Emory. I can't do much for the 'Can I get in' or 'Am I a good fit?' questions because I'm just a student. I'm not on the admissions council. But I'll try to get back to you within 24 hours for the types of questions I can answer.

Also, any questions about whether or not you fit the requirements or if there is any wiggle room may best be addressed to the admissions office. It is staffed by a group of wonderful ladies who are incredibly nice and who will be the best resource. And no, asking a question does not mean that you will either a) get noticed and therefore get an interview, or b) get noticed and crossed off the potential interviewees because you're already too much trouble.

And yes, I do love my school, and I think I made a great choice when I chose Emory.

Awesome. Emory is a top choice for me. Thank you for taking questions.

How do you like the pre-clinical curriculum?

How are the M3 rotations set up?

What are some highlights of living in Atlanta?

What's the student housing situation like?

When should we expect the first batch of interview invites to go out?

Interview season starts late Sept for them...so I would think II's should start going out next week! I think someone posted on here earlier that according to last year's thread, the first batch started going out on 8/29

The grading is pass/fail during the first 18 months... and then?

How much class time is there at Emory? What's the typical pre-clinical schedule (9:00-5, 9:00-2, etc.?) Is it possible to do research during pre-clinical years or would it be too much?

I really am liking the pre-clinical curriculum. It's set up so that the first 4 months really ease you into medical school, mostly organ systems with basic physiology, and then you start outpatient clinic around October, anatomy in November. By the time you start the disease part of the curriculum, it's just another step-up in difficulty.

Some people have concerns that the shortened curriculum means that you're at a disadvantage for boards. I would disagree - as would upperclassmen that I've talked to with that same concern - since the most important preparation for boards is not only how well you learn the curriculum, but the amount of time you're given for independent studying. We get all of December and January, but we're highly encouraged to just take 6 weeks for fear of burn out. Then we return for rotations in late February.

Rotations begin when we return, late Feb/early March. They're set up in blocks, so half the class will take 3-4 rotations the first semester, and the rest of the class will take other other rotations, then they flip. I don't know the exact rotations yet - I'm trying to get through boards first - but everyone I've talked to is just so thrilled to be on the wards. Very few complaints, considering the workload.

And once you start rotations, grading is A/B/C with +/- system. That's what you want, since residency programs will look at clinical grades and they don't really care too much about pre-clinical. Which works out well since your diploma will only show that you've passed.

Atlanta is great - very diverse, lots of nightlife, tons of activities. A good portion of the class has taken advantage of the community sports/trivia nights, most people take advantage of the bars in the area. Great shopping, too. And you really can't beat Grady for clinical training. I suppose it's possible, but difficult.

As for housing, most M1s live in apartment complexes close to Emory, since that's easiest, especially when you're not from around the area. People start branching out after their first year. Some places are close enough to walk to school, while other people live in midtown and drive ~15-20 minutes every morning. Most people have a 5-10 minute commute in the morning.

How much class time is there at Emory? What's the typical pre-clinical schedule (9:00-5, 9:00-2, etc.?) Is it possible to do research during pre-clinical years or would it be too much?

Mostly 8-12 lecture every day. Afternoon is much more variable, but I generally have my afternoons off 2-3 times a week. Less at first, since you're learning physical exam skills for the first few weeks, but it lessens off until anatomy starts. It very much varies per module and wherever you are in the curriculum.

Most people do not do research. It would be possible - especially in the first few months - but you just don't know enough at first, or enough people. I'm starting my 2nd year elective and just now getting my feet dirty with research, but I have friends who started after summer, just before summer. Keep in mind that you have a dedicated research time after your 3rd year rotations. By that time, a lot of people know enough of what they want to do for residency that they can direct their research to suit their interests. Discovery is quite wide open.

So I submitted on 8/9 and as of today am still not complete. Has anyone else been stuck this long? Should I email them?

You should email them. I was complete the same day that my last component came in- my LORs.

I submitted 8/13 and am still on "not complete at this time" even though they have received my letters. I guess they are manually reviewing the letters?

They manually check off the letters. It took mine a little over 2 weeks to be marked as complete. So don't worry if it takes a bit of time.

anyone get any II? The complete email from Emory says something like "if you do not hear from us immediately regarding an II, do not worry because you may be reviewed again in the spring." Since I haven't heard anything and I was complete early August, I guess I'm on hold?

Not necessarily on hold. It may take them a while to review your application, so you may be still under review.

Just got an interview invite!

It included this message in the email:

"Upon your request, we can arrange a time for you to meet with our Dean of Multicultural Affairs, Dr. Robert Lee. If you would like to meet with Dr. Lee, please contact Yolanda Hood at [email protected] to schedule an appointment. The Dean’s calendar fills up quickly, so please request an appointment as soon as possible."

Did anyone else get this? I'm confused because I don't think the Emory secondary required a photo, so how did they know I count in the "multicultural" category?

Don't they ask on the Primary?

And Congrats on the II!!!

It was so long ago, I guess I forgot.

Thanks, by the way!

I made my stats vague on the MDapps because of neuroticism, so here are my stats for anyone interested:

GPA: 3.57, sGPA: 3.51 (hyp undergrad, don't know if that helped with my low gpas)
MCAT: 35 (12 PS, 12 VR, 11BS)

So they just guess your ethnicity from a picture? That seems sketch.

I am imagining the conversations that would go on amongst the committee members if pictures were used to determine ethnicity xD

But yeah, you indicated ethnicity and all other information tied to multicultural affairs on your AMCAS application, so that's how they knew.

Now for a question of my own... has anyone else gotten IIs without any unique circumstances? Is it just this program that has sent out IIs so far?

I didn't. I never checked any of the boxes on AMCAS as the application indicated it was optional.

Now, I am sketched out about how Emory knew. Hmmmm....*cue detective gadget music*
