2013-2014 Georgetown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi all,

I was just checking my status on the Georgetown website and I see that when I clicked GU SoM Post-Submission Updates it says "Interview" at the top in bold letters. Does it say that for everyone?

It does for me, and I haven't heard anything back from them about an interview.

I noticed that when I was filling out the secondary! So pretty sure it says that for everyone...

I have that Interview thing at the top of my post-submission update too. I doubt that means interview as they haven't sent me an email. Aren't interviews by email?

Are you sure that means you got an interview?

I saw it there too when I filled out the secondary. So no. With an interview comes an email with a link to schedule; it is not connected to the secondary site.

Anybody else going to be there this Thursday? If so, who's up for drinks afterwards. First rounds on me!

Just had my interview here today! It was a VERY relaxed interview and you really learn about about the school from the presentation Ms. Sullivan gives which she also keeps very real.

Awesome thanks for sharing. I have my interview here coming up soon, and I'm getting a little nervous!

Is it a closed or open file interview? 🙂

Kinda both. They have access to all your essays but not your GPA or MCAT. My interviewer told me he didn't read of the essays though because he'd rather just learn about me from the source.

Lol! I had my interview today and Mrs. Sullivan assured us that our application is reviewed in total by 22 people. So thats why its so expensive.

My impressions on the interview and the day coming from a D.C./Maryland Resident

First it was pretty unorganized so the flow was generally weird. I am already familiar with the campus and the hospital so knowing that the tour left much to be desired. The lecture I was able to sit in on was on pharmacology, so a bit of a snore.

The students we met with for breakfast and for the tour were nice and pretty great though I wish we had more MS2-MS4 instead of MS1's who had only been there for about 3 weeks.

The talks were AWESOME. I was maybe 70% sure about Georgetown before but after listening to Mrs. Sullivan's talk i'm like 95% sure. Please accept me GT! We were also talked to by the Dean of Admissions who is a really cool person. However we were not able to get a financial aid talk because everyone was out of the office, this was a bit of a bummer considering the high COA.

Finally I was expecting the interview to be really casual and conversational (reading from the last couple years sdn threads) and found this wasn't the case. It was quite formal though not stressful. I was interviewed by an awesome MS4. I think I did okay but didn't do my best :/

Heres to october 15th!

I'm still not complete and they haven't replied to my emails. Any advice on what to do at this point? I submitted August 2nd.

For the peeps with IIs...were your "Why Georgetown" essays close to 5000 characters?

So I submitted August 1st and still haven't gotten an II:-( can I assume this is a silent rejection?

I really appreciate your thorough interview feedback. Is there any advice you would give those of us who have not interviewed yet? Thank you!!!

There is a major focus on the whole Why Georgetown/Why DC thing (obviously) but basically they straight up told us that they only accept people who are avid about going to Georgetown and fulfilling their philosophy of cura personalis. So I would really focus on how you really fit into their mission.

Secondly, you're going to get a lot of one on one time with students so come prepared with lots of questions.

Finally, if your interview is before Octoberish expect it to be really hot. They haven't fixed the AC in the fish bowl (where you will be spending some amount of time), so dress accordingly.

I'll keep thinking of things.

Thanks guys and congrats on your IIs! My character count is only 1234...I don't know what else to say. GT is one of the best schools. Great City. Cura Personalis.

how does anyone manage to fit 5000 characters on to a single page 12 size font....

I haven't gotten an II, but my essay was 4167 characters and I probably could have fit more on the page if I had changed the font and/or shrunk the margins more.

In fact, for an example, I just cut my AMCAS personal statement down to exactly 5000 characters (with the last sentence partially cut off) and I could fit it on exactly one page in Times New Roman size 12 font with the margins all at 0.7 inches. With 1 inch margins it goes 8 lines over.

If GT didn't let you attach a document it would pretty much be impossible to fit 5000 characters on a page without control over margins & font, though. *shrug*

You are awesome! Thank you sooo much for the advice. Perhaps we will be classmates next Fall ; )

That was very informative. Thanks. You get a gold star.

I also interviewed yesterday, I guess there were a lot of SDNers there 🙂. My 2 cents of things I wish I knew before going in was that while the day was long it was quite relaxed including the interview. Also if you are not a morning person and take a while to wakeup/be more social, make sure you get breakfast and coffee before hand. The optional breakfast almost everyone went to and you can start talking with students immediately, unfortunately I was still a bit of a zombie at this point and I definitely wish I was more awake and animated.

Not to mention if you don't grap that coffee you might struggle through that lecture immediately after seeing as the room is all nice and warm haha.

II today! Scheduled October 19th.

cGPA 3.88, sGPA 4.0, MCAT 31 (10/11/10), nontrad. Complete 08/15.

My essay was 2,100 characters.

II today. 31S and 3.8ish. Complete 8/05. CAP'd (waitlisted) here last year.

ii, was complete in the end of July. My GU essay was about 4000 characters with a huuuuuge typo.

Is a typo something to bring up at an interview? Or what if we changed our minds about a sentence...?

Haha what kind of typo would be significant enough to worry about? An obscenity?

No, I just mixed up two words. Two very similar, very normal, run-of-the-mill English words. Like, I swapped them in back-to-back sentences. It's awkward.

Anyone know how carefully GU reads applicant essays? Perhaps they will not notice...

You got an II so clearly it's not a big deal...

I can't make the optional breakfast/lecture. Will this affect me in any way?

I don't think so, it was mainly a time to talk with students about their experiences, there is defiantly more of that at the lunch and during the tour, but I liked getting different peoples perspectives

To those who have interviewed already, what was the format of the actual interview? Did you get a lot of typical/generic interview questions? Thanks and good luck to all!

Not going to that stuff will not affect you at all. Just make sure you are there a little before 10 to get to the fishbowl.

As to people who were looking for student hosts - we don't start doing any hosting until September (sorry to the early birds!) because our M1s are just figuring stuff out and even M2s have only just gotten back to school (we start mid-August). Starting in early September we'll be matching people up with student hosts. Keep in mind the student hosting program is all student run and we are pretty busy - but we will get back to you as quickly as we can!

That being said... M1 at GUSOM - let me know if any questions! (You can ask me stuff on this page, but if you do PM me or I won't know you asked since the odds of me actually looking at this page aren't good - i'm taking a brief break from studying now and should get back to it 🙂 )

happy applying/interviewing!

has your school submitted your committee letter? or do you have any letters of recc that you put into AMCAS that haven't been submitted yet? or any transcripts they are waiting on. any of those would mean you aren't complete (even if its an optional/addition LOR)

(meant to include your quote in my post immediately above this... gah)

Everything has been submitted. I'm complete at other schools and I already have II. I don't get it.....

I'm obviously a little later than everyone here! Congrats to everyone on the interviews and such! :-D
I've finally been verified and gotten my secondary lol
I've completed all of the required things.
I was mainly wondering what I should write about on the "anything else?" essay?? haha
I feel like I COULD write stuff in the further information essay, but what type of stuff are they looking for there? It's just a small textbox and doesn't even have a character/word limit assigned to it.

It doesn't say, but the character limit is 1000. I think i more or less recycled another essay for it. Good luck!

Thanks!
I didn't feel the need to include anything else in the "further information" essay, so I left it blank. I submitted last night and got the complete email this morning! Woo woo! Fingers crossed! 😀

it is weird. if you call the office you sometimes have to push to actually talk to someone who has any clue what is going on, but you might try that.

keep in mind, georgetown got over 12,000 apps last year so it does take some time to get through them all. but i'm not saying it should take over a month...

Coming from Seattle, would Washington DC be close enough to Boston to warrant an In the Area email?

Costs about $70 for a one way ticket from Boston to DC, which would be nicer than spending $300+ again to get back to the East Coast.
