2013-2014 Northwestern University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also got the 160k scholarship! Really honored, but will likely have to decline... I hope that someone else may benefit from this incredible gift in my place!
just wondering...are you leaning toward ucsf instead?

Just got the invitation to second look! It will be on Thursday April 24th from 4:30 to 6:30 and also Friday from 8am to 6:30pm. Does anyone know if there will be other events going on Thursday or Friday night? I'm trying to decide if I should stay with a host both nights or not.

Hey guys, did anyone else receive an email regarding financial aid but are unable to see the aid on Caesar?

I can't access the aid on Caesar, but I got a separate email notifying me of a need-based scholarship! Pretty excited, between the merit and need aid full tuition is covered for me 🙂

I couldn't see it last night but it is up now! I went into Caesar and clicked on Accept/Decline Awards and I could see them. I got a $40,000 need-based grant, excited but it's still so expensive!

Financial aid awards seem to have been posted!

Edit: haha estfinne beat me to it! also got a 10k/year grant!

Hmm I didn't get the e-mail and my financial aid information isn't available...

Also, congrats @runnergirl16 !!
Thanks Oso!

I am getting super excited about Feinberg now. I was on campus today, and I wanted to check out the book store and I ended up buying a sweatshirt. I was planning to wait to buy school apparel until I was actually a student there, but it was so pretty and purple I couldn't resist!

Super excited to meet my fellow classmates at second look! Anyone know what the dress code is? Semi-formal I am assuming?

@Big N Tasty @therealfinale @TREDWISE

Hey guys, I'm applying to Feinberg next year but I had a question about pre-reqs since you all went to UIUC. What class did you use for the organic chemistry II lab requirement? CHEM 437?

I don't really understand the logistics of staying overnight. Do we leave our stuff when we get registered and then the housing hosts meet up with us when Thursday's events are over? Was anyone given contact info of hosts? ...and if I picked "both nights" then I get a host Friday night as well?

decided to withdraw. good luck to those still waiting to hear back!!

Withdrew a few days ago. An extra spot and hopefully an extra $160k is up for grabs. Best of luck everyone and congratulations on a great medical school!

Was it a bad financial aid package or were you looking for a scholarship?
it was all loans, whereas elsewhere I received need-based aid, so NU was just too expensive. I never expect scholarships lol

does anyone think that the estimated cost of attendance is kind of overkill for what most students would actually need? I got the $160,000 scholarship, but they're still recommending $40,000/year in loans to cover everything else! Anyone else in the same position and wondering how much loan $ to take out??

Dealing with a similar issue. I think it depends how/where you want to live and what your resources are like now. I haven't gotten any scholarships from NU, so I'm not sure how it's distributed, but I assume they give you 40k/year, right?

Here's their cost info: http://chicagofinancialaid.northwestern.edu/tuition/feinberg.html

Tuition is >50k/year, so you still need to pay 10k+/year in tuition. They estimate room and board at 16k and change, which really isn't an over-estimate at all, especially if you want to live near the medical school. One could easily spend more. Personally, being familiar with the Chicago area, I would live further away and commute via public transit, but if you live in a cool neighborhood like Wicker Park it won't actually be much cheaper.

I'd say with just the remainder of tuition and living expenses, even with a 40k/year scholarship, you are still responsible for (at very minimum) 25k/year. If the only way to make that up is loans, I'd guess you have to take them.

Other stuff is more personal to you- "Personal" section, computer, transportation, etc. Insurance is 3k, probably don't need to buy if you are still on your parents' dime there (thanks Obama! 🙂 ). U-Pass at $400 is easily worth it.

Hello! Could a very kind and helpful person please post the schedule and dress code for second look? I seem to have, in a moment of idiocy, deleted my information about it. Thanks so much! I am excited to meet some of you soon!

When I spoke with admissions in early March, they said that at that point there were 180 people on the alternate list. Last year around 10 got off, the year before around 30.

I wonder what that number is now.

Why has the class size decreased from previous years?

I wonder what that number is now.

I spoke to them right after the big wave of final decisions on March 1st. The woman in admissions said something along the lines of, "I was just putting together the final alternate list before your called." Were more people alternate-listed after that?

They were probably putting together who responded that they accepted a place on the alternate list, since they asked for an email response. Might not have had all the responses in then.

I might call them up and ask about the waitlist soon. I'm wondering if anything changed.

Why on earth do they put 180 individuals on their waitlist when the most they would probably ever take off is 50? That strikes me as a lot of unnecessary false hope that they're sowing!

That is unfortunate for applicants and super annoying. but for the school this gives them the most amount of choosing power when it does come to taking people off the wait list. It's not ranked and they'll choose based on continued interest and the class makeup (i.e. if someone with certain demographics from a certain location or specific interests drops from the current class, they might be more likely to choose someone off the wait list with a similar background etc.)

I don't have the schedule and they took all second look info down from the applicant portal. And I didn't see any information about a dress code in any of the emails. So maybe stick with business casual?

Yeah, I think that business casual is probably a safe bet. I looked for info on the portal, too...I really wish they had some information up! Thanks for the reply 🙂

Does anyone have an idea when the alternate list is expected to move?
